Shri Tells Indra Why She Left the Asuras
Yudhishthira asks how to tell beforehand whether a man will rise or fall, and Bhishma answers with an old conversation. While Narada and Indra sit on the bank of the Ganga, the goddess Shri descends from a shining car and says that she dwells where truth, dharma, generosity and respect for elders are kept. She describes how the Daityas, once virtuous, fell into pride, anger, impurity and contempt for teachers, parents and the gods, and so she left them to live among the gods. Indra and Narada welcome her, the world prospers, and Bhishma closes by urging Yudhishthira to protect his subjects, devoted to Vasudeva.
