Jaigishavya Teaches Devala Calm in Praise and Blame

Yudhishthira asks what conduct brings a man to the everlasting abode of Brahman beyond Prakriti. Bhishma answers with the old conversation of the sage Jaigishavya and Asita Devala. Jaigishavya, unmoved by praise or blame, explains that the wise live without envy, anger or attachment, that contempt borne calmly brings happiness in both worlds, and that such a man reaches the highest goal. A longer passage then tells how Devala became his disciple, and how Jaigishavya, sitting in the company of Shiva and Uma, set aside even Shiva's offer of a boon and asked only to be heard.
