Shanti Parva · Adhyaya 317

The Dissolution of the World

Yajnavalkya turns from creation to dissolution. At the end of the day of the Unmanifest the Sun, made twelvefold, burns all creatures; the earth becomes like a tortoise's back and is filled with water, which fire drinks, wind devours, space swallows, and mind, egoity and finally the Lord in his all-pervading form withdraw in turn. He closes by announcing the teaching on the self, the elemental and the divine aspects.

Verse 1 (12.317.1)

tattvānāṃ sargasaṅkhyā ca kālasaṅkhyā tathaiva ca | mayā proktā'nupūrveṇa saṃhāramapi me śṛṇu

I have told you in order the number of the creations of the principles and the reckoning of time. Now hear from me of the dissolution as well,

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: the page is the right adhyaya (table rows 1-17; the colophon reads सप्तदशाधिकत्रिशततमोऽध्यायः । 317). Its text is the critical edition's 12.300.1-17 (the CE numbers this adhyaya 300), verse for verse. The heading line printed above the table अनुवादः) is not part of the text and is not added. The four variant-reading notes printed after the colophon (12-317-4, -8, -13, -21) are a stray repeat of the apparatus of adhyaya 316 (they refer to readings that occur there, not here) and are not added. No Appendix I passage and no CE star passage occurs here.

Verse 2 (12.317.2)

yathā saṃharate jantūnsasarja ca punaḥ punaḥ | anādinidhano brahmā nityaścākṣara eva ca

how Brahma, without beginning or end, eternal and imperishable, withdraws the creatures and creates them again and again.

Note on the text: Corrected यता → यथा (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped aspirate; CE reads yathā).

Verse 3 (12.317.3)

ahaḥkṣayamatho buddhvā niśi svapnamanāstathā | codayāmāsa bhagavānavyakto'haṃkṛtaṃ naram

Knowing that the day has ended, and with his mind inclined to sleep in the night, the Blessed Unmanifest One urges on the person formed of egoity.

Verse 4 (12.317.4)

tataḥ śatasahasrāṃśuravyaktenābhicoditaḥ | kṛtvā dvādaśadhā''tmānamādityo jvaladagnivat

Then the one of a hundred thousand rays, urged on by the Unmanifest, making himself twelvefold, the Sun, blazing like fire,

Verse 5 (12.317.5)

caturvidhaṃ prajājātaṃ nirdahatyāśu tejasā | jarāyvaṇḍasvedajātamudbhijjaṃ ca narādhipa

swiftly burns up with his heat the fourfold race of creatures—the womb-born, the egg-born, the sweat-born, and the sprout-born, O ruler of men.

Note on the text: Corrected मुद्भिज्जं स → मुद्भिज्जं च (misprint in Wikisource; च is mistyped as स, which leaves the list without its conjunction; CE reads udbhijjaṃ ca).

Verse 6 (12.317.6)

etadunmeṣamātreṇa vinaṣṭaṃ sthāṇujaṅgamam | kūrmapṛṣṭhasamā bhūmirbhavatyatha samantataḥ

In the blink of an eye all this, moving and unmoving, is destroyed, and the earth becomes like the back of a tortoise on every side.

Verse 7 (12.317.7)

jagaddagdhvā'mitabalaḥ kevalāṃ jagatīṃ tataḥ | ambhasā balinā kṣipramāpūrayati sarvaśaḥ

Having burned the world, he of immeasurable might then fills the bare earth swiftly, on every side, with mighty water.

Note on the text: Corrected जगर्ती → जगतीं (misprint in Wikisource; a stray र; CE reads jagatīṃ). आपूरयति सर्वशः where the CE has केवलं जगतीं ततः … आपूर्यत समन्ततः (recension variant, kept).

Verse 8 (12.317.8)

tataḥ kālāgnimāsādya tadambho yāti saṃkṣayam | vinaṣṭe'mbhasi rājendra jājvalatyanalo mahān

Then the water, reaching the fire of time, passes to destruction. When the water has vanished, O king of kings, the great fire blazes up.

Verse 9 (12.317.9)

tamaprameyātibalaṃ jvalamānaṃ vibhāvasum | ūṣmāṇaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ saptārciṣamathāñjasā

That immeasurable, exceedingly mighty fire, blazing, the heat of all beings, with seven flames,

Note on the text: Corrected सप्ताचिंपम → सप्तार्चिषम (misprint in Wikisource; the conjunct र्चि and the final ष are garbled; CE reads saptārciṣam).

Verse 10 (12.317.10)

bhakṣayāmāsa bhagavānvāyuraṣṭātmako balī | vicarannamitaprāṇastiryagūrdhvamadhastathā

the Blessed Wind, eightfold in nature and mighty, devours, ranging with boundless force sideways, upward and downward.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads भगवान् where the CE has बलवान् (recension variant, kept).

Verse 11 (12.317.11)

tamapratibalaṃ bhīmamākāśaṃ grasate punaḥ | ākāśamapyabhinadanmano grasati cārikam

Then Space swallows that terrible one, irresistible in strength; and the roving Mind swallows even Space, resounding as it is.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads ग्रसते पुनः … अभिनदन् where the CE has ग्रसतेऽऽत्मना … अतिनदन् (recension variant, kept).

Verse 12 (12.317.12)

mano grasati sarvātmā sohaṃkāraḥ prajāpatiḥ | ahaṃkāro mahānātmā bhūtabhavyabhaviṣyavit

The Self of all swallows the mind—he who is Egoity, the Lord of creatures. And Egoity is the Great Self, who knows what has been, what is, and what will be.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads अहंकारो महानात्मा where the CE has अहंकारं महान् आत्मा (recension variant, kept).

Verse 13 (12.317.13)

tamapyanupamātmānaṃ viśvaṃ śaṃbhuḥ prajāpatiḥ | aṇimā laghimā prāptirīśāno jyotiravyayaḥ

And him too, the incomparable Self, the Universe, Shambhu, Prajapati—who is the powers of minuteness, lightness and attainment, the Lord, the imperishable Light—

Verse 14 (12.317.14)

sarvataḥ pāṇipādaṃ tatsarvatokṣiśiromukham | sarvataḥ śrutimalloke sarvamāvṛtya tiṣṭhati

with hands and feet everywhere, with eyes, heads and mouths everywhere, with hearing everywhere in the world, he stands enveloping all.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads सर्वतोक्षिशिरोमुखम् where the CE has सर्वतःपाणिपादान्तः … सर्वतोक्षिशिरोमुखः (recension variant, kept).

Verse 15 (12.317.15)

hṛdayaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ parvaṇā'ṅguṣṭhamātrakaḥ | aṇugrasatyananto hi mahātmā viśvamīśvaraḥ

He dwells in the heart of all beings, a thumb in measure at the joint. Subtle, and yet infinite, the great Self, the Lord, swallows the universe.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads पर्वणाऽङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः … अणुग्रसत्यनन्तो where the CE has पर्वणोऽङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः … अनुग्रसत्यनन्तं (recension variant, kept).

Verse 16 (12.317.16)

tataḥ samabhavatsarvamakṣayāvyayamavraṇam | bhūtabhavyabhaviṣyāṇāṃ sraṣṭāramanaghaṃ tathā

Then everything came into being—imperishable, unchanging, flawless—and likewise the sinless creator of what has been, what is, and what will be.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads भूतभव्यभविष्याणां where the CE has भूतभव्यमनुष्याणां (recension variant, kept).

Verse 17 (12.317.17)

eṣopyayaste rājendra yathāvatsamudāhṛtaḥ | adhyātmamadhibhūtaṃ ca śrūyatāṃ cādhidaivatam

Thus the dissolution has been described to you rightly, O king of kings. Now hear of the self-aspect, the elemental aspect, and the divine aspect.

Note on the text: The alignment found no match; this is CE 12.300.17 (eṣo 'pyayas te rājendra yathāvat paribhāṣitaḥ / adhyātmam adhibhūtaṃ ca adhidaivaṃ ca śrūyatām). Wikisource reads समुदाहृतः for परिभाषितः and श्रूयतां चाधिदैवतम् for the CE's अधिदैवं च श्रूयताम् (recension variants, kept).
