Vyasa's Austerity for a Son

Yudhishthira asks how Shuka was born to Vyasa and how he reached perfection. Bhishma begins with the power of austerity and restraint of the senses, then tells how Vyasa practised yoga on Mount Meru for a hundred years to win a son equal to fire, earth, water, wind and space. The gods and sages gathered, and Mahadeva appeared with the goddess and promised Vyasa a son of pure and radiant nature.

"How was the righteous Shuka, of great austerity, born to Vyasa, and how did he reach the highest perfection? Tell me that, grandsire."

Verse 2 (12.331.2)

kasyāṃ cotpādayāmāsa śukaṃ vyāsastapodhanaḥ | na hyasya jananīṃ vidmo janma cāgryaṃ mahātmanaḥ

"Of whom did the ascetic Vyasa beget Shuka? We do not know the mother of this great soul, nor the manner of his lofty birth."

Verse 3 (12.331.3)

na hāyanairna palitairna vittairna ca bandhubhiḥ | ṛṣayaścakrire dharmaṃ yo'nūcānaḥ sa no mahān

The sages did not make greatness in dharma depend on years, on grey hair, on wealth or on kinsmen. Among us, the one who is learned in the Vedas is the great one.

Verse 7 (12.331.7)

tapomūlamidaṃ sarvaṃ yanmāṃ pṛcchasi pāṇḍava | tadindriyāṇi saṃyamya tapo bhavati nānyathā

All this that you ask me about, son of Pandu, has austerity as its root, and austerity comes only by restraining the senses, and in no other way.

Verse 8 (12.331.8)

indriyāṇāṃ prasaṅgena doṣamṛcchatyasaṃśayam | saṃniyamya tu tānyeva siddhimāpnoti mānavaḥ

Verse 9 (12.331.9)

aśvamedhasahasrasya vājapeyaśatasya ca | yogasya kalayā tāta na tulyaṃ vidyate phalam

Dear child, the fruit of a thousand horse-sacrifices and a hundred Vajapeya sacrifices is not equal to a single fraction of yoga.

Verse 10 (12.331.10)

Verse 14 (12.331.14)

atiṣṭhanmārutāhāraḥ śataṃ kila samāḥ prabhuḥ | ārādhayanmahādevaṃ bahurūpamumāpatim

For a hundred years, it is said, the mighty one stood living on air alone, worshipping Mahadeva, the many-formed lord of Uma.

Verse 17 (12.331.17)

tatra brahmarṣayaścaiva sarve devarṣayastathā | lokapālāśca lokeśaṃ sādhyāśca vasubhiḥ saha

There came the brahmin sages and all the divine sages, the guardians of the world, and the Sadhyas together with the Vasus, to the lord of the world.

Verse 18 (12.331.18)

ādityāścaiva rudrāśca divākaraniśākarau | māruto marutaścaiva sāgarāḥ saritastathā

The Adityas and the Rudras, the sun and the moon, Maruta the wind-god and the Maruts, the oceans and the rivers also came.

Verse 19 (12.331.19)

aśvinau devagandharvāstathā nāradaparvatau | viśvāvasuśca gandharvaḥ siddhāścāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ

The two Ashvins, the gods and the Gandharvas, Narada and Parvata, the Gandharva Vishvavasu, the Siddhas and the hosts of Apsarases came as well.

tatra rudro mahādevaḥ karṇikāramayīṃ śubhām | dhārayāṇaḥ srajaṃ bhāti jyotsnāmiva niśākaraḥ

There Rudra Mahadeva shone, wearing a lovely garland made of karnikara flowers, like the moon in its moonlight.

Verse 21 (12.331.21)

In that divine and delightful forest, crowded with gods and divine sages, the unwavering sage abode in supreme yoga for the sake of a son.

Verse 22 (12.331.22)

na cāsya hīyate prāṇo na glānirupajāyate | trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ tadadbhutamivābhavat

His life-breath did not fail and no weariness came upon him; to all three worlds this seemed a wonder.

Even today, dear child, the fire-coloured matted locks of that great soul, lit by his austerity, still shine.

Verse 26 (12.331.26)

"As fire is pure, as wind, as earth, as water, as space, so pure and great will your son be."

Note on the text: Corrected यथाऽऽकारास्तथा → यथाऽऽकाशस्तथा (misprint in Wikisource: the list of elements needs space, ākāśa; CE has यथा च खं तथा, same sense). भविता ते सुतो महान् is a recension variant of CE bhaviṣyati suto mahān, kept.
