The Atonements for Sin

Vyasa teaches Yudhishthira the atonements: the penances for killing a brahmin, drinking liquor, defiling a teacher's bed and other grave offences, the gifts of cattle that cleanse, the power of the Ashvamedha, and the rules for lesser lapses. He explains that good deeds must outweigh evil ones, that the rule is for the believer, and that Yudhishthira is freed from sin by the king's duty of protection. Yudhishthira reflects for a moment and answers.
