Shanti Parva · Adhyaya 349

The Lord of Sacrifice and the Gods' Shares

Shaunaka asks Sauti how the Lord can be both the first taker of sacrificial shares and the teacher of withdrawal; Sauti relays Janamejaya's same question to Vaishampayana, who repeats what Vyasa told his five disciples on Meru. Vyasa tells of creation from the Unmanifest through Aniruddha and Brahma, and how the gods and sages, after a thousand divine years of austerity on the shore of the Ocean of Milk, heard a bodiless Voice assign them shares in sacrifice and describe the four ages. The Lord then appeared to Brahma with a horse's head, entrusted the world to him, and promised to manifest himself when the gods' task grew too hard. The adhyaya ends with the fruits of hearing it.

Verse 1 (12.349.1)

कथं स भगवान्देवो यज्ञेष्वग्रहरः प्रभुः । यज्ञधारी च सततं वेदवेदाङ्गवित्तथा ॥

kathaṃ sa bhagavāndevo yajñeṣvagraharaḥ prabhuḥ | yajñadhārī ca satataṃ vedavedāṅgavittathā

How is it that the Blessed God, the Lord, takes the foremost share in sacrifices, is ever the upholder of sacrifice, and is likewise a knower of the Vedas and their limbs,

Note on the text: Speaker: the page heads this शौनक उवाच (Shaunaka asking Sauti) and the heading is kept; the critical edition has the same question as Janamejaya's to Vaishampayana (12.327.1, heading janamejaya uvāca).

Verse 2 (12.349.2)

निवृत्तं चास्थितो धर्मं क्षेमी भागवतः प्रभुः । निवृत्तिधर्मान्विदधे स एव भगवान्प्रभुः ॥

nivṛttaṃ cāsthito dharmaṃ kṣemī bhāgavataḥ prabhuḥ | nivṛttidharmānvidadhe sa eva bhagavānprabhuḥ

while he himself has taken his stand on the way of withdrawal, the secure Lord, the Bhagavata? And how is it that this same Blessed Lord laid down the laws of withdrawal?

Note on the text: Line 1 ends भागवतः प्रभुः (CE bhāgavatapriyaḥ) and line 2 begins निवृत्तिधर्मान् (CE pravṛttidharmān), recension variants, kept.

Verse 3 (12.349.3)

कथं प्रवृत्तिधर्मेषु भागार्हा देवताः कृताः । कथं निवृत्तिधर्माश्च कृता व्यावृत्तबुद्धयः ॥

kathaṃ pravṛttidharmeṣu bhāgārhā devatāḥ kṛtāḥ | kathaṃ nivṛttidharmāśca kṛtā vyāvṛttabuddhayaḥ

How were the gods made deserving of shares in the ways of activity? And how were others made followers of the laws of withdrawal, with minds turned back from the world?

Verse 4 (12.349.4)

एतं नः संशयं सौते छिन्धि गुह्यं सनातनम् । त्वया नारायणकथाः श्रुता वै धर्मसंहिताः ॥

etaṃ naḥ saṃśayaṃ saute chindhi guhyaṃ sanātanam | tvayā nārāyaṇakathāḥ śrutā vai dharmasaṃhitāḥ

Resolve for us this hidden, eternal doubt, Sauti, for you have heard the tales of Narayana, the collections of dharma.

ime sabrahmakā lokāḥ sasurāsuramānavāḥ | kriyāsvabhyudayoktāsu saktā dṛśyanti sarvaśaḥ

These worlds, with Brahma and with gods, demons and men, are seen everywhere attached to the rites spoken of as bringing prosperity.

Note on the text: Corrected सब्रह्यका → सब्रह्मका (misprint in Wikisource; य for म; CE sabrahmakā). Lines = CE 12.327.5a and 5c. Speaker: the page leaves verses 7-15 under the सौति heading, but they are Janamejaya's direct speech to Vaishampayana (verse 6 introduces it), so they are given to Janamejaya.

And you have spoken, brahmin, of liberation, nirvana, the highest bliss. We have heard that those who become liberated here, free of merit and sin, enter the thousand-rayed God.

Note on the text: Corrected शुश्रुम् → शुश्रुम (misprint in Wikisource; a final halanta that makes no word; the perfect शुश्रुम "we have heard" is the evident form; CE śuśrumaḥ). Three lines = CE 12.327.5e, 6a, 6c (the CE divides differently). Line 2 reads ये तु (CE ye ca) and line 3 प्रविशन्तीह शुश्रुम (CE praviśantīti śuśrumaḥ), recension variants, kept.

ayaṃ hi duranuṣṭheyo mokṣadharmaḥ sanātanaḥ | yaṃ hitvā devatāḥ sarvā havyakavyabhujo'bhavan

So they have not followed that path, unchanging, imperishable, undying. Those who, remembering the measure of time, have taken up the way of activity, for them, who perform rites, this measure of time is a great fault.

Note on the text: Three lines = CE 12.327.9c, 10a, 10c. Line 1 ततस्तेनास्थिता is ततस्ते नास्थिता written together (CE tatas te nāsthitā), so no change; Wikisource ध्रुवमक्षरमव्ययम् (CE dhruvam akṣayam avyayam) and कालपरीमाणो (CE kālaparīmāṇe) are recension variants, kept.
