Janamejaya Asks; Yudhishthira Visits Krishna

Janamejaya asks Vaishampayana what Yudhishthira and Krishna did after the kingdom was won. Vaishampayana tells how Yudhishthira set the classes of society in order, gave lavish gifts to thousands of brahmins, Dhaumya, Kripa and Vidura, honoured Yuyutsu, handed the kingdom's affairs to Dhritarashtra, Gandhari and Vidura, and then went to Krishna. He found him seated on a jewelled couch, dark and radiant like a cloud on Mount Meru, and asked after his night and his well-being, but Krishna answered nothing and sank into meditation.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: the page is the right adhyaya (rows labelled 12-44-1 to 12-44-21; the colophon reads चतुश्चत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः । 44). Its text is the critical edition's 12.45.1-20 (the CE numbers this adhyaya 45), with one star line. The title line above the table is a heading, not a verse. The page ends with its colophon; the one gloss printed after the table (12-44-10) is not added, and no other block follows. Speakers: the page heads Janamejaya (verse 1) and Vaishampayana (verse 3); verses 18-20 are Yudhishthira's speech to Krishna, unheaded (the input carried Vaishampayana over), and are given to him; verse 17 introduces it and stays with Vaishampayana. Line 1 reads महाबाहुर्धर्मपुत्रो where the CE has mahātejā dharmarājo (recension variant).

Verse 2 (12.44.2)
