Bhishma Invites Yudhishthira to Question Him

Bhishma agrees to speak on dharma and asks that Yudhishthira, whose virtues he lists, be the one to question him. Krishna explains that Yudhishthira stays away from shame and dread of reproach after destroying kinsmen and elders in the war. Bhishma answers that for a kshatriya killing in battle is dharma, and Yudhishthira then comes forward, clasps his feet, and is told to sit and ask without fear.

Note on the text: Corrected अथाव्रवीन् → अथाब्रवीन् (misprint in Wikisource; व्र for ब्र, CE athābravīn) and वाङ्भनसी → वाङ्मनसी (misprint; भ for म, CE vāṅmanasī). CE 12.55.1: line 1 = 1a (narration; the page's heading वैशंपायन), line 2 = 1c; the second line is already Bhishma's speech, kept whole under the narrator. CE has a third line here (1e), which Wikisource prints as the first line of the next verse.
