Krishna Rebukes Gandhari; the Dead Are Counted and Burned

Krishna tells the fallen Gandhari to rise and not to blame him for a ruin of her own son's making, and she falls silent. Dhritarashtra asks Yudhishthira how many were slain and where they have gone; Yudhishthira gives the count and the fates of the dead, which he knows through the insight gained from the sage Lomasha. At his command Vidura, Sanjaya, Dhaumya, Sudharman, Yuyutsu and Indrasena build pyres and burn the kings, and the unclaimed dead in heaps, after which Yudhishthira goes toward the Ganga with Dhritarashtra.

Verse 1 (11.26.1)

uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha gāndhāri mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ | tavaiva hyaparādhena kuravo nidhanaṃ gatāḥ

Rise, rise, Gandhari, and do not set your mind on grief. It is through your own fault that the Kurus have met their end.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: the page is the right adhyaya (rows labelled 11-26-1 to 11-26-44; the colophon reads षड्विंशोऽध्यायः । 26) and it is the critical edition's 11.26 (44 verses), verse for verse. The two summary lines above the table are headings, not verses. The page ends with its colophon; the glosses printed after the table (11-26-2, 3, 4, 5, 17, 24, 43 and the adhyaya name) are not added, and no text of the next adhyaya follows. Not on the page: the CE star lines 11.26.11b*0068_01-02, 14d*0069_01 and 38b*0070_01 (vulgate omissions; not added). The CE verses 11.25.44-46 listed as unmatched in the input belong to the preceding adhyaya, not to this page. Speaker: Krishna is headed श्रीभगवान् on the page (the CE heads him vāsudeva); the page's heading is kept.

Verse 2 (11.26.2)

yattvaṃ putraṃ durātmānamīrṣumatyantamāninam | duryodhanaṃ puraskṛtya duṣkṛtaṃ sādhu manyase

You made your son Duryodhana, an evil-minded, envious and exceedingly proud man, your guide, and thought his wrongdoing right.

Verse 3 (11.26.3)

niṣṭhuraṃ vairapuruṣaṃ vṛddhānāṃ śāsanātigam | kathamātmakṛtaṃ doṣaṃ mayyādhātumihecchasi

He was cruel, a man of enmity, who flouted the rule of his elders. How, then, do you wish to lay upon me a fault of your own making?

Verse 4 (11.26.4)

mṛtaṃ vā yadi vā naṣṭaṃ yo'tītamanuśocati | duḥkhena labhate duḥkhaṃ dvāvanarthau prapadyate

Whoever grieves over what is dead or lost, over what is past, gets sorrow from sorrow and falls into two misfortunes.

Verse 5 (11.26.5)

taporthīyaṃ brāhmaṇī dhatta garbhaṃ | gaurvoḍhāraṃ dhāvitāraṃ turaṅgī | śūdrā dāsaṃ paśupālaṃ ca vaiśyā | vadhārthīyaṃ tvadvidhā rājaputrī

A brahmin woman bears a child for the sake of austerity; a cow bears one who carries burdens; a mare, one who runs; a shudra woman bears a servant; a vaishya woman, a keeper of cattle; but a princess such as you bears one for the sake of slaughter.

Note on the text: Line 3 reads च where the CE has तु (recension variant, Wikisource reading kept).

Verse 6 (11.26.6)

tacchrutvā vāsudevasya punaruktaṃ vaco'priyam | tūṣṇīṃ babhūva gāndhārī śokavyākulalocanā

Hearing this unwelcome, repeated speech of Vasudeva, Gandhari fell silent, her eyes clouded with grief.

Note on the text: Speaker heading printed वैशंपायन (anusvara spelling) at 11-26-6x; normalised to वैशम्पायन.

Verse 7 (11.26.7)

dhṛtarāṣṭrastu rājarṣirnigṛhyābuddhijaṃ tamaḥ | paryapṛcchata dharmajño dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram

But Dhritarashtra, the royal sage and knower of dharma, restraining the darkness born of unwisdom, questioned Yudhishthira, the king of dharma.

Note on the text: Speaker spelling वैशंपायन normalised to वैशम्पायन (as at verse 6). Line 2 reads धर्मज्ञो where the CE has dharmātmā (recension variant).

You know the number of the living among the armies, Pandava. If you know the number of the slain, tell it to me.

Note on the text: Corrected वदस्वं → वदस्व (misprint in Wikisource; stray anusvara on the imperative, "tell"; the CE has vadasva). Speaker: Dhritarashtra (his question, unheaded; the input carried Vaishampayana over; verse 7 is the narration introducing it).

daśāyutasahasrāṇi sahasrāṇi ca viṃśatiḥ | koṭyaḥ ṣaṣṭiśca ṣaṭ caiva hyasminrājanmṛdhe hatāḥ

Ten myriads of thousands, and twenty thousand more, and sixty-six crores: so many, O king, have been slain in this battle.

Note on the text: The numerals in line 1 and the end of line 2 differ from the CE (daśāyutānām ayutam …; ye 'smin rājamṛdhe hatāḥ); recension variant, Wikisource reading kept and translated as printed.

Verse 10 (11.26.10)

alakṣyāṇāṃ ca vīrāṇāṃ sahasrāṇi caturdaśa | daśa cānyāni rājendra śataṃ ṣaṣṭiśca bhārata

Of the unrecorded heroes there are fourteen thousand, and ten thousand more, O king of kings, and a hundred and sixty, O Bharata.

Note on the text: Corrected आलक्षाणां → अलक्ष्याणां (misprint in Wikisource; आलक्षा- is not a word here, "of the unrecorded/unseen"; the CE has alakṣyāṇām). Line 2 ends शतं षष्टिश्च भारत where the CE has śataṃ ṣaṣṭiś ca pañca ca (recension variant, so 160 against the CE's 165; Wikisource kept).

Yudhishthira, what destination have they gone to, O best of men? Tell me, mighty-armed one; I hold you to be all-knowing.

Note on the text: Corrected युधिष्ठिरगतिं → युधिष्ठिर गतिं (misprint in Wikisource; the vocative "Yudhishthira" is run into गतिं, giving a meaningless compound; the CE has yudhiṣṭhira gatiṃ). Line 1 ends puruṣasattama (singular) where the CE has puruṣasattamāḥ (recension variant).

Those great-souled men who, struck down by their enemies, were brought low and left weaponless, yet held to modesty and faced their foes in the fight,

Note on the text: Corrected हीनिषेवा → ह्रीनिषेवा (misprint in Wikisource; the conjunct ra is dropped, ह्री "modesty"; the CE has hrīniṣedhā, the second member is a recension variant). Line 1 begins पात्यमानाः where the CE has pīḍyamānāḥ (recension variant). The sentence runs into verse 16.

Verse 16 (11.26.16)

and who were cut down by sharp weapons while devoted to the warrior's duty: those radiant heroes, slain, have gone to the abode of Brahma.

Verse 17 (11.26.17)

And those men who were slain here, O king, in the midst of the battlefield, in whatever way, have gone to the higher state.

Note on the text: Line 2 differs from the CE (yathā kathaṃ cit te rājan saṃprāptā uttarān kurūn); the page's gloss records the variants Wikisource reading (…ह्युत्तरां गतिम्) kept.

Note on the text: Speaker: Yudhishthira, as the page heads him at 11-26-22x; the CE prints no new heading after Dhritarashtra's 11.26.21, so it leaves 21-23 to one speaker. Page heading kept. Note on the text: Corrected चान्यांस्च → चान्यांश्च (misprint in Wikisource; स्च is not a conjunct of this word, "and others"; the CE has anyāṃś ca).
