The Fates of the Heroes and the Praise of the Mahabharata

Janamejaya asks where the fallen kings and heroes went, and Vaishampayana, following Vyasa, tells how each entered the divine source he came from: Bhishma the Vasus, Drona Brihaspati, Karna the Sun, Abhimanyu Soma, Vidura and Yudhishthira Dharma, and Vasudeva Narayana. Janamejaya completes his sacrifice and returns to Hastinapura. Sauti then closes the epic with the praise of the Mahabharata and the fruits of hearing, reciting and honouring it.

"In this cycle of rebirth thousands of mothers and fathers and hundreds of sons and wives have been known; they pass away, and others will pass away."

Note on the text: Speaker: no heading is printed; verses 73-76 are the four-verse summary of the Bharata which, as the first-person cry of verse 75 shows, is Vyasa's own utterance (the Wikisource commentary also marks 73 as the start of the four-line abstract).

"Never, for desire, fear or greed, should one abandon dharma, not even to save one's life. Dharma is eternal, pleasure and pain are impermanent; the soul is eternal, its cause is impermanent."

Note on the text: Speaker: see verse 73. The page prints four lines (the first line broken after "लोभा-"); because the sandhi लोभाद्धर्मम् runs across the break, the four padas are joined here in two lines, as in the critical edition (CE 18.5.50a, c). Note on the text: Removed the stray closing quote mark. Not in the critical edition's numbered text: star passage 18.5.43x*0052_04-05. The page then closes with the colophon (अध्याय 5) and the line "समाप्तं स्वर्गारोहणपर्व। इति श्रीमन्महाभारतं समाप्तम्", which are not verse text.
