Svargarohana Parva · Adhyaya 6

The Rules for Hearing the Bharata

Janamejaya asks Vaishampayana how the Bharata should be heard, what fruit it bears, what should be given to the reciter and to the brahmins, and what kind of reciter to choose. Vaishampayana describes the reciter's qualities, the heavenly fruits won at each successive conclusion of the recitation, the offerings proper to each parva, the gifts to the reciter, and the great merit of hearing and proclaiming the Bharata. This is a vulgate-only appendix, not found in the critical edition.

Verse 1 (18.6.1)

भगवन्केन विधिना श्रोतव्यं भारतं बुधैः । फलं किं के च देवाश्च पूज्या वै पारणेष्विह ॥

bhagavankena vidhinā śrotavyaṃ bhārataṃ budhaiḥ | phalaṃ kiṃ ke ca devāśca pūjyā vai pāraṇeṣviha

Blessed one, in what manner should the wise listen to the Bharata? What is the fruit of it, and which gods are to be honoured at the concluding rites (pāraṇa) here?

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension). Whole adhyaya 18-6 is vulgate-only: no verse of it is in the critical edition (no Appendix I passage or star passage reproduces it; the parva ends at 18,005). It is the "Bharata-shravana-vidhi" appended after the Harivamsha; the editors' note (18-6-1x) says it is missing from southern manuscripts and was kept on the strength of Nilakantha's commentary. No speaker is printed for verses 1-2; they are Janamejaya's questions, answered by Vaishampayana (heading at 18-6-3x).

Verse 2 (18.6.2)

deyaṃ samāpte bhagavankiṃ ca parvaṇiparvaṇi | vācakaḥ kīdṛśaścātra eṣṭavyastadbravīhi me

O lord, what should be given when the hearing is completed, and at each parva? And what sort of reciter should be sought for it? Tell me this.
