Indra's Expiation and Shachi's Prayer to Night
Nahusha presses Shachi to accept him, and she wins time from him: if Indra cannot be found, she will come to him. The gods go to Vishnu, who tells them that Indra will be cleansed of brahmin-slaying by worshipping him with a horse sacrifice and that Nahusha will fall through his own deeds. The sacrifice is performed and the guilt distributed among trees, rivers, mountains, the earth and women, but Indra, seeing Nahusha's boon-given power, hides again. Grieving, Shachi worships the goddess Night and calls on Upashruti to show her where Indra is.
