Krishna Tells Karna the Secret of His Birth
Janamejaya asks what Krishna said to Karna when he took him up into his chariot on leaving Hastinapura. Krishna reminds Karna that by the law books the son of an unmarried girl belongs to the man who marries her, so that Karna, born to Kunti before her marriage, is by dharma Pandu's eldest son. He offers him the kingship: the Pandavas, their sons, the Vrishnis and their allies will honour him, Dhaumya will consecrate him, Yudhishthira will be his heir, Bhima will hold his umbrella and Arjuna drive his chariot, and Draupadi will come to him in her turn.
