Karna Refuses, and Foresees the Sacrifice of Battle
Karna accepts that by dharma he is Pandu's son, but says he cannot abandon Adhiratha and Radha, who raised him, the wives and sons he has through them, or Duryodhana, who relied on him in seeking war; he asks Krishna to keep his birth secret, since Yudhishthira would otherwise give up the kingdom and Karna would hand it to Duryodhana. He then describes the coming war as a great sacrifice of weapons held by Duryodhana, assigning each Pandava warrior a priest's office, foresees its stages through his own death, Duhshasana's and Duryodhana's, and the widows' lament, and asks that the Kshatriyas fall at Kurukshetra and win heaven and lasting fame.

Bull among Kshatriyas, let not these Kshatriyas, old in learning and old in years, die a futile death on your account, Madhusudana.
Verse 53 (5.141.53)
śastreṇa nidhanaṃ gacchetsamṛddhaṃ kṣatramaṇḍalam | kurukṣetre puṇyatame trailokyasyāpi keśava
Let the whole flourishing circle of the Kshatriyas meet its end by weapons at Kurukshetra, the holiest place in all the three worlds, Keshava.
Note on the text: Corrected करुक्षेत्रे → कुरुक्षेत्रे (misprint in Wikisource; dropped vowel sign, as in the critical edition's kurukṣetre).
Verse 54 (5.141.54)
tadatra puṇḍarīkākṣa vidhatsva yadabhīpsitam | yathā kārtsnyena vārṣṇeya kṣatraṃ svargamavāpnuyāt
So arrange here, lotus-eyed one, what you desire, so that the Kshatriyas, every one, may reach heaven, Varshneya.
Verse 55 (5.141.55)
yāvatsthāsyanti girayaḥ saritaśca janārdana | tāvatkīrtibhavaḥ śabdaḥ śāśvato'yaṃ bhaviṣyati
As long as the mountains stand and the rivers flow, Janardana, so long will the sound of their fame endure.
Note on the text: Corrected शाश्वतोयं → शाश्वतोऽयं (missing avagraha in Wikisource; śāśvato 'yaṃ).
Verse 56 (5.141.56)
brāhmaṇāḥ kathayiṣyanti mahābhāratamāhavam | samāgameṣu vārṣṇeya kṣatriyāṇāṃ yaśodhanam
Brahmins will tell of this great war of the Bharatas in their gatherings, Varshneya, the treasure of the Kshatriyas' glory.
Verse 57 (5.141.57)
samupānaya kaunteyaṃ yuddhāya mama keśava | mantrasaṃvaraṇaṃ kurvannityameva parantapa
Bring Kunti's son to face me in battle, Keshava, and keep this counsel secret always, scorcher of foes."
