Bhishma Carries Off the Princesses of Kashi

Duryodhana asks why Bhishma will not kill Shikhandin even when he comes at him armed. Bhishma begins the story of Amba: after Shantanu's death he installed Chitrangada and then Vichitravirya on the throne, and, seeking a bride for his brother, went alone in his chariot to the svayamvara of the three daughters of the king of Kashi, Amba, Ambika and Ambalika. Challenging the assembled kings, he carried the princesses off, routed every king who pursued him, and brought them to Hastinapura for his brother, telling Satyavati what he had done.

Seeing that swiftness of mine, they turned back, broken; and all the kings bowed down to me and praised me.
