Parashurama Challenges Bhishma

Bhishma tells how Parashurama, who will not take up arms except at the bidding of brahmins, at first promises Amba only to bring Bhishma to obey; Akritavrana reminds him of his old vows, and Rama resolves to win by persuasion or else to kill. At Kurukshetra Rama orders Bhishma to take Amba back; Bhishma refuses, citing his kshatriya vow and the verse of Marutta on forsaking a teacher who strays, and the two agree to fight. Bhishma rides out in a white chariot; his mother Ganga pleads with both in vain, and Parashurama calls him to battle.

Verse 1 (5.178.1)

evamuktastadā rāmo jahi bhīṣmamiti prabho | uvāca rudatīṃ kanyāṃ codayantīṃ punaḥ punaḥ

Told this, "Kill Bhishma!", Rama then spoke, O lord, to the weeping maiden who kept urging him again and again:

Verse 2 (5.178.2)

Daughter of the king of Kashi, I do not take up weapons at will, fair lady, except for the sake of those who know Brahman. What else can I do for you?

Note on the text: Speaker: Rama's reply to Amba is printed under Bhishma's heading (as in the critical edition); his speech fills verses 2–4, so they are given to Rama.

Verse 3 (5.178.3)

vācā bhīṣmaśca sālvaśca mama rājñi vaśānugau | bhaviṣyato'navadyāṅgi tatkariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

At my word alone, princess, Bhishma and Shalva will both do as I bid, lady of flawless limbs. That I will bring about; do not grieve.

Verse 4 (5.178.4)

na tu śastraṃ grahīṣyāmi kathaṃcidapi bhāmini | ṛte niyogādviprāṇāmeṣa me samayaḥ kṛtaḥ

But I will not take up arms in any way, lovely lady, except at the bidding of brahmins. That is the rule I have made for myself.

Verse 5 (5.178.5)

mama duḥkhaṃ bhagavatā vyapaneyaṃ yatastataḥ | tacca bhīṣmaprasūtaṃ me taṃ jahīśvara mā ciram

You must take away my sorrow, lord, by whatever means you can. It was born of Bhishma; kill him, mighty one, without delay.

Verse 6 (5.178.6)

kāśikanye punarbrūhi bhīṣmaste caraṇāvubhau | śirasā vandanārho'pi grahīṣyati girā mama

Daughter of Kashi, speak once more. Bhishma, though he himself is worthy of homage, will at my word bow his head to both your feet.

Verse 7 (5.178.7)

jahi bhīṣmaṃ raṇe rāma mama cedicchasi priyam | pratiśrutaṃ ca yadapi tatsatyaṃ kartumarhasi

Kill Bhishma in battle, Rama, if you wish to do what pleases me. And what you have promised, you should make true.

tayoḥ saṃvadatorevaṃ rājanrāmāmbayostadā | akṛtavraṇo jāmadagnyamidaṃ vacanamabravīt

While Rama and Amba were speaking together in this way, O king, Akritavrana said these words to the son of Jamadagni:

अकृतव्रण उवाच · Akritavrana said

Verse 9 (5.178.9)

śaraṇāgatāṃ mahābāho kanyāṃ na tyaktumarhasi | yadi bhīṣmo raṇe rāma samāhūtastvayā mṛdhe

You should not abandon a maiden who has come to you for refuge, mighty-armed one. If Bhishma, Rama, is summoned by you to the fight,

Note on the text: Speaker: Akritavrana's speech (introduced in verse 8, no printed heading) fills verses 9–15 and is given to him. Through verse 15 Wikisource runs half a verse out of step with the critical edition: this verse = CE 5.177.9ab + 10ab (second line a variant of "yadi bhīṣmas tvayāhūto raṇe rāma mahāmune").

Verse 10 (5.178.10)

nirjito'smīti vā brūyātkuryādvā vacanaṃ tava | kṛtamasyā bhavetkāryaṃ kanyāyā bhṛgunandana

he will either say "I am beaten" or do as you tell him. Either way the maiden's purpose will be achieved, delight of the Bhrigus,

Note on the text: The page prints this row as two verses (marks 10a, 10b, 11c, 11b, with a verse-end ॥ after the second line); split at that mark, the second half restored as verse 11. This verse = CE 5.177.10cd + 11ab.

vākyaṃ satyaṃ ca te vīra bhaviṣyati kṛtaṃ vibho | iyaṃ cāpi pratijñā te tadā rāma mahāmune

and your word, hero, will be made good, O lord. And there is also this vow of yours, Rama, great sage, made at that time:

Note on the text: Split from the preceding row, where the page prints it with the mark 11 after a verse-end ॥ (see verse 10). = CE 5.177.11cd + 12ab.

Verse 14 (5.178.14)

na śakṣyāmi parityāgaṃ kartuṃ jīvankathaṃcana | yaśca kṛtsnaṃ raṇe kṣatraṃ vijeṣyati samāgatam

I shall never be able to forsake as long as I live. And whoever conquers the whole assembled kshatriya order in battle,

that blazing one too I shall kill," O Bhargava. Bhishma, the upholder of the Kuru line, is just such a victor, Rama. Go and meet him, and fight him in battle, delight of the Bhrigus.

Note on the text: Corrected सङ्ग्रमे → सङ्ग्रामे (misprint in Wikisource; CE saṃgrāme). Three lines = CE 5.177.15cd + 16.

smarāmyahaṃ pūrvakṛtāṃ pratijñāmṛṣisattama | tathaiva ca kariṣyāmi yathā sāmnaiva lapsyate

I remember the vow I made long ago, best of sages. Still, I will act so that this is won by conciliation alone.

Note on the text: Corrected त्त → च (misprint in Wikisource; CE tathaiva ca).

Verse 17 (5.178.17)

kāryametanmahadbrahmankāśikanyāmanogatam | gamiṣyāmi svayaṃ tatra kanyāmādāya yatra saḥ

This matter that the Kashi princess holds at heart is a great one, brahmin. I will go there myself, taking the maiden, to where he is.

Note on the text: Corrected काशिकान्यामनोगतम् → काशिकन्यामनोगतम् (misprint in Wikisource; CE kāśikanyāmanogatam). Restored the dropped word तत्र from the critical edition (5.177.18c gamiṣyāmi svayaṃ tatra): Wikisource's third quarter had only six syllables.

yadi bhīṣmo raṇaślāghī na kariṣyati me vacaḥ | haniṣyāmyenamudriktamiti me niścitā matiḥ

If Bhishma, who glories in battle, does not do as I say, I will kill that arrogant man. That is my firm resolve.

Verse 63 (5.178.63)

na tadā jātavānbhīṣmaḥ kṣatriyo vāpi madvidhaḥ | paścājjātāni tejāṃsi tṛṇeṣu jvalitaṃ tvayā

at that time no Bhishma had been born, nor any kshatriya like me. The truly blazing ones were born later; it was only straw that you set ablaze,

Note on the text: Corrected पञ्चाञ्चातानि → पश्चाज्जातानि (misprint in Wikisource; CE star passage paścāj jātāni). First line = CE 5.178.37ab; the second line is the critical edition's star passage *0580_01 (printed after 37ab), not in its constituted text.
