Shikhandi Is Born a Girl and Raised as a Son
Duryodhana asks how Shikhandi, once a girl, became a man. Bhishma tells how the childless Drupada practised austerities to win from Shiva a son who would avenge him on Bhishma, and was told the child would be born a girl and later become a man. Drupada's queen bore a daughter but proclaimed her a son; Drupada had all the rites performed as for a boy and the child was called Shikhandi, while Bhishma alone knew the truth through a spy, Narada's words, the god's promise and Amba's austerity.
