Shiva's Boon and Amba Enters the Fire

The ascetics try to turn Amba from her austerities, but she tells them her vow is for Bhishma's death alone and that, weary of womanhood, she seeks to become a man. Shiva appears among the sages and grants that she will slay Bhishma; when she asks how a woman could win in battle, he promises that she will be born in Drupada's family, become a great chariot-warrior and in time a man, and remember everything in her new body. Amba then builds a pyre by the Yamuna and enters the fire, crying out for Bhishma's death.
