Amba's Austerities and Her Birth as a River

Rama tells Amba that he has fought with all his strength and cannot overcome Bhishma, and advises her to seek Bhishma's protection; she refuses and resolves to bring Bhishma down herself. Rama returns to Mahendra, Bhishma goes home to Satyavati and has Amba watched, and Narada and Vyasa console him. Amba practises fierce austerities for twelve years and bathes at many hermitages and holy places; Ganga warns her that her crooked vow will turn her into a crooked river that flows only in the rains, and with half her body Amba becomes the river Amba in the land of the Vatsas while remaining a maiden with the other half.
