Shikhandi Becomes a Man; Kubera Curses Sthuna

Bhishma goes on with the story. The yaksha Sthuna agrees to lend Shikhandini his manhood for a time and to bear her womanhood, and the two exchange sexes. Drupada tells the king of the Dasharnas that his child is a son; Hemavarman threatens war, has Shikhandi examined by young women, finds him a man, and goes home placated. Kubera, finding that Sthuna stays away from him out of shame, curses him to remain a woman until Shikhandi dies; Shikhandi, returning honestly to give back the manhood, is sent home, and Bhishma explains that he will never strike Shikhandi, who was born a woman and was Amba before.
