Krishna Outweighs the Whole World

Sanjaya tells Dhritarashtra of Arjuna and Krishna, of Krishna's discus that moves unseen by his power, and of the demons and kings he overcame as if at play. Set the whole world on one side and Janardana on the other, he says, and Janardana outweighs it: where truth, dharma, modesty and uprightness are, there Govinda is, and where Krishna is, there is victory. Krishna turns the wheels of time, of the world and of the ages, deludes the worlds by his power of illusion, and leaves undeluded only those who take refuge in him.

Verse 1 (5.67.1)

arjuno vāsudevaśca dhanvinau paramārthitau | kāmādanyatra saṃbhūtau sarvabhāvāya saṃmitau

Arjuna and Vasudeva, the two bowmen, are held in the highest regard. They were born of their own will and not of desire, and they are equal to every undertaking.

Verse 2 (5.67.2)

vyāmāntaraṃ samāsthāya yathāmuktaṃ manasvinaḥ | cakraṃ tadvāsudevasya māyayā vartate vibho

That discus of Vasudeva, O lord, spans a fathom across and is released at whatever size the high-minded one wills; it moves by his magic power, so that none can follow it with the eye.

Note on the text: Corrected समास्थय → समास्थाय (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped ā, समास्थय is no verb form; the critical edition reads samāsthāya). व्यामान्तरं and यथामुक्तं (CE dyām antaraṃ, yathāyuktaṃ) are kept: they are the vulgate readings, glossed by the commentary printed on the page.

Verse 3 (5.67.3)

sāpahnavaṃ kauraveṣu pāṇḍavānāṃ susaṃmatam | sārāsārabalaṃ jñātuṃ tejaḥpuñjāvabhāsitam

It brings destruction upon the Kauravas and is greatly prized by the Pandavas. It blazes with a mass of radiance, and by it one may know where true strength and weakness lie.

Note on the text: The automatic alignment found no match; this is the critical edition's 5.66.3 (left among its unmatched verses). The first line agrees except कौरवेषु (CE pāṇḍaveṣu); the second line differs (CE sārāsārabalaṃ jñātvā tat samāsena me śṛṇu). Kept as the Wikisource reading.

Verse 4 (5.67.4)

narakaṃ śambaraṃ caiva kaṃsaṃ caidyaṃ ca mādhavaḥ | jitavānghorasaṅkāśānkrīḍanniva mahābalaḥ

Madhava, mighty in strength, overcame the dreadful Naraka, Shambara, Kamsa and Shishupala of Chedi as if at play.

Verse 5 (5.67.5)

pṛthivīṃ cāntarikṣaṃ ca dyāṃ caiva puruṣottamaḥ | manasaiva viśiṣṭātmā nayatyātmavaśaṃ vaśī

By his mind alone that supreme person, exalted in spirit and master of himself, brings the earth, the sky and heaven under his control.

Verse 6 (5.67.6)

bhūyo bhūyo hi yadrājanpṛcchase pāṇḍavānprati | sārāsārabalaṃ jñātuṃ tatsamāsena me śṛṇu

Since you ask me again and again about the Pandavas, O king, wishing to know their strength and weakness, hear it from me in brief.

Verse 7 (5.67.7)

ekato vā jagatkṛtsnamekato vā janārdanaḥ | sārato jagataḥ kṛtsnādatirikto janārdanaḥ

Set the whole world on one side and Janardana on the other: in true worth Janardana outweighs the entire world.

Verse 8 (5.67.8)

bhasma kuryājjagadidaṃ manasaiva janārdanaḥ | na tu kṛtsnaṃ jagacchaktaṃ kiñcitkartuṃ janārdane

Janardana could reduce this world to ashes by his mind alone, but the whole world together could do nothing at all against Janardana.

Note on the text: Corrected कुर्याञ्जगदिदं → कुर्याज्जगदिदं (misprint in Wikisource; त् before ज becomes ज्, not ञ्; CE kuryāj jagad idaṃ). The second line's किञ्चित्कर्तुं जनार्दने (CE bhasma kartuṃ janārdanam) is kept as a variant.

Verse 9 (5.67.9)

yataḥ satyaṃ yato dharmo yato hrīrārjavaṃ yataḥ | tato bhavati govindo yataḥ kṛṣṇastato jayaḥ

Where there is truth, where there is dharma, where there is modesty and uprightness, there Govinda is; and where Krishna is, there is victory.

Verse 10 (5.67.10)

pṛthivīṃ cāntarikṣaṃ ca divaṃ ca puruṣottamaḥ | viceṣṭayati bhūtātmā krīḍanniva janārdanaḥ

Janardana, the supreme person, the self of all beings, sets the earth, the sky and heaven in motion as if at play.

Verse 11 (5.67.11)

Making the Pandavas his pretext and seeming to bewilder the world, he means to burn up your foolish sons, who delight in adharma.

Verse 12 (5.67.12)

kālacakraṃ jagaccakraṃ yugacakraṃ ca keśavaḥ | ātmayogena bhagavānparivartayate'niśam

By his own yoga the Blessed Keshava ceaselessly turns the wheel of time, the wheel of the world and the wheel of the ages.

Verse 13 (5.67.13)

kālasya ca hi mṛtyośca jaṅgamasthāvarasya ca | īṣṭe hi bhagavānekaḥ satyametadbravīmi te

The Blessed Lord alone rules over time and death and over all that moves and all that is still. I tell you this truly.

Verse 14 (5.67.14)

īśannapi mahāyogī sarvasya jagato hariḥ | karmāṇyārabhate kartuṃ kīnāśa iva durbalaḥ

Though Hari, the great yogi, is lord of the whole world, he sets about his work like a feeble tiller of the soil.

Verse 15 (5.67.15)

By this power of illusion Keshava deceives the worlds; but those men who take refuge in him alone are not deluded.
