Krishna Refuses Duryodhana's Food

Krishna goes to Duryodhana's splendid palace, where he is received with honour and offered a golden couch, gifts and a meal, but he declines to eat. When Duryodhana asks why, Krishna replies that envoys eat only when their mission succeeds, that food is taken out of affection or in distress, and that whoever hates the Pandavas hates him. He leaves for Vidura's house, sends away the Kuru elders who offer him their homes, and eats the food Vidura serves him.

Thus addressed, the great-minded Govinda replied, in a voice like the roar of a rising cloud in its season, lifting his mighty arm.

Note on the text: Corrected उद्यन्मेघस्वनःक → उद्यन्मेघस्वनः (misprint in Wikisource; a stray क, a footnote mark, follows the visarga). The critical edition reads oghamegha- for उद्यन्मेघ-.

Note on the text: Corrected कृतर्थं → कृतार्थं (misprint in Wikisource; dropped ā, as in कृतार्था in the line before; the critical edition reads kṛtārthaṃ). Speaker: Krishna's reply, introduced in verses 17–18, fills the verse.

akasmāccaiva pārthānāṃ dveṣaṇaṃ nopapadyate | dharme sthitāḥ pāṇḍaveyāḥ kastānkiṃ vaktumarhati

And this hatred of the sons of Pritha, being without cause, is unfitting. The Pandavas stand firm in dharma; who could say anything against them?

Verse 30 (5.91.30)

यस्तान्द्वेष्टि स मां द्वेष्टि यस्ताननु समामनु । ऐकात्म्यं मां गतं विद्धि पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारिभिः ॥

yastāndveṣṭi sa māṃ dveṣṭi yastānanu samāmanu | aikātmyaṃ māṃ gataṃ viddhi pāṇḍavairdharmacāribhiḥ

Verse 31 (5.91.31)

कामक्रोधानुवर्ती हि यो मोहाद्विरुरुत्सति । गुणवन्तं च यो द्वेष्टि तमाहुः पुरुषाधमम् ॥

kāmakrodhānuvartī hi yo mohādvirurutsati | guṇavantaṃ ca yo dveṣṭi tamāhuḥ puruṣādhamam

He who follows desire and anger and out of delusion seeks to quarrel, and who hates a man of virtue, is called the lowest of men.

Verse 32 (5.91.32)

He who, out of delusion and greed, looks with ill will on kinsmen of noble qualities — such a man, master neither of himself nor of his anger, does not keep his fortune long.

Note on the text: Corrected सोजितात्मा → सोऽजितात्मा (misprint in Wikisource; missing avagraha, सः + अजितात्मा; the critical edition reads so 'jitātmā).

Having gone out, the great-minded, mighty-armed Vasudeva went to the house of the great-souled Vidura to lodge there.

ta ūcurmādhavaṃ vīraṃ kuravo madhusūdanam | nivedayāmo vārṣṇeya saratnāṃste gṛhānvayam

The Kurus said to the heroic Madhava, Madhusudana: "We place our houses, with all their treasures, at your disposal, Varshneya."

Note on the text: The critical edition (5.89.36) reads the first line te 'bhigamyābruvaṃs tatra kuravo madhusūdanam; Wikisource's line is a recension variant.

The mighty Madhusudana said to the Kauravas: "You may all go, sirs; you have shown me every honour."

Note on the text: Corrected भवन्ते → भवन्तो (misprint in Wikisource; भवन्ते is not a valid form, the nominative plural before ग is भवन्तो; the critical edition reads bhavanto).

yāteṣu kuruṣu kṣattā dāśārhamaparājitam | abhyarcayāmāsa tadā sarvakāmaiḥ prayatnavān

tataḥ kṣattā'nnapānāni śucīni guṇavanti ca | upāharadanekāni keśavāya mahātmane

Then the Kshattri brought to the great-souled Keshava many kinds of food and drink, pure and excellent.

Note on the text: Corrected क्षत्राऽन्नपानानि → क्षत्ताऽन्नपानानि (misprint in Wikisource; क्षत्ता, Vidura, is the subject, as in the verse before; the critical edition reads kṣattānnapānāni).

Verse 42 (5.91.42)

तैस्तर्पयित्वा प्रथमं ब्राह्मणान्मधुसूदनः । वेदविद्भ्यो ददौ कृष्णः परमद्रविणान्यपि ॥

With these Madhusudana first satisfied the brahmins, and Krishna also gave the finest riches to those learned in the Veda.
