Krishna Visits Kunti

In the afternoon Krishna leaves Vidura's house to see his father's sister Kunti, who embraces him weeping. She asks after each of her sons and Draupadi in turn, mourns their fourteen years of exile and the insult to Draupadi in the dicing hall, praises Vidura's conduct, and blames her father for giving her away to Kuntibhoja. She recalls the heavenly voice that foretold Arjuna's triumph and sends stern messages urging her sons to fight for what is theirs. Krishna consoles her with assurance of the Pandavas' welfare and coming victory; Kunti entrusts their cause to him, and he departs for Duryodhana's palace.

"From childhood these sons of mine were devoted to serving their elders; they were true friends to one another, honoured by all and of one mind. Stripped of their kingdom by fraud, they who deserved to live among men went away into the lonely wilds.

Note on the text: No speaker heading in Wikisource; Kunti's words, announced in verse 4 (साऽब्रवीत्), run from here to verse 54 and are assigned to her (the input carried Vaishampayana over). From here to verse 21 each Wikisource verse joins the second half of one critical-edition verse to the first half of the next. Corrected बाल्यान्प्रभृत्येव → बाल्यात्प्रभृत्येव (misprint in Wikisource; त् does not become न् before प्, cf. बाल्यात्प्रभृति in verse 10; critical edition bālyāt prabhṛtyeva) and राज्याञ्जनार्हा → राज्याज्जनार्हा (misprint in Wikisource; त् before ज् gives ज्ज, not ञ्ज; critical edition rājyāj janārhā).

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.6cd; line 2 is 5.88.7ab. Corrected प्रियमुखे → प्रियसुखे (misprint in Wikisource; म for स — the page's own commentary glosses प्रियं and सुखं, and the critical edition reads priyasukhe).

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.9cd (reading svapitarau for पितरौ); line 2 is 5.88.10ab (reading vaiṇavair api for वेणुनिस्वनैः). Corrected कथमुषूर्महावने → कथमूषुर्महावने (misprint in Wikisource; vowel lengths swapped in ऊषुः, cf. verse 8; critical edition katham ūṣur) and र्भृदङ्गै → र्मृदङ्गै (misprint in Wikisource; भ for म; critical edition mṛdaṅgair).

patibhiḥ pañcabhiḥ śūrairagnikalpaiḥ prahāribhiḥ | upapannā maheṣvāsairdraupadī duḥkhabhāginī

Though she has five husbands, heroes like fire, strong to strike and mighty archers, Draupadi has her share only of sorrow.

Verse 47 (5.90.47)

caturdaśamidaṃ varṣaṃ yannāpaśyamarindama | putrādibhiḥ paridyūnāṃ draupadīṃ satyavādinīm

This is the fourteenth year, tamer of foes, that I have not seen truthful Draupadi, worn down by grief for her sons and the rest.

Verse 48 (5.90.48)

na nūnaṃ karmabhiḥ puṇyairaśnute puruṣaḥ sukham | draupadī cettathāvṛttā nāśnute sukhamavyayam

Surely no man wins happiness by holy deeds, if Draupadi, whose conduct is so pure, does not enjoy lasting happiness.

Note on the text: Corrected अश्रुते → अश्नुते and नाश्रुते → नाश्नुते (misprint in Wikisource; र for न in अश्नुते, 'obtains'; critical edition aśnute, nāśnute).

Verse 49 (5.90.49)

na priyo mama kṛṣṇāyā bībhatsurna yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | bhīmaseno yamau vāpi yadapaśyaṃ sabhāgatām

Neither Bibhatsu nor Yudhishthira, nor Bhimasena nor the twins, is as dear to me as Krishna — and I saw her dragged into the assembly hall.

Verse 50 (5.90.50)

na me duḥkhataraṃ kiṃcidbhūtapūrvaṃ tato'dhikam | strīdharmiṇīṃ draupadīṃ yacchvaśurāṇāṃ samīpagām

Nothing that ever befell me grieved me more than this: that Draupadi, in her monthly season, was brought before her fathers-in-law,

Verse 51 (5.90.51)

ānāyitāmanāryeṇa krodhalobhānuvartinā | sarve praikṣanta kurava ekavastrāṃ sabhāgatām

fetched there by that base man who is ruled by anger and greed, and that all the Kurus gazed at her standing in the hall in a single garment.

Verse 52 (5.90.52)

tatraiva dhṛtarāṣṭraśca mahārājaśca bāhlikaḥ | kṛpaśca somadattaśca nirviṣṇāḥ kuravastathā

Dhritarashtra was there, and the great king Bahlika, Kripa and Somadatta — and the Kurus were dismayed.

Note on the text: Corrected कसोमदत्तश्च → सोमदत्तश्च (misprint in Wikisource; stray क; critical edition somadattaś ca).

Verse 53 (5.90.53)

tasyāṃ saṃsadi sarveṣāṃ kṣattāraṃ pūjayāmyaham | vṛttena hi bhavatyāryo na dhanena na vidyayā

Of all in that assembly it is the Kshattri, Vidura, whom I honour; for it is by conduct that one becomes noble, not by wealth and not by learning.

Verse 54 (5.90.54)

tasya kṛṣṇa mahābuddhergambhīrasya mahātmanaḥ | kṣattuḥ śīlamalaṅkāro lokānviṣṭabhya tiṣṭhati

The character of that wise, profound and great-souled Kshattri, Krishna, is an ornament that upholds the worlds."

Note on the text: Corrected क्षत्तुःक शील → क्षत्तुः शील (misprint in Wikisource; stray क; critical edition kṣattuḥ śīlam).

sā śokārtā ca hṛṣṭā ca dṛṣṭvā govindamāgatam | nānāvidhāni duḥkhāni sarvāṇyevānvakīrtayat

Grieving and yet glad to see Govinda come, she recounted every one of her many sorrows.

Note on the text: Speaker heading वैशंपायन उवाच printed above this verse. Corrected अन्वकीर्तयम् → अन्वकीर्तयत् (misprint in Wikisource; the narrator speaks of Kunti in the third person, सा … अन्वकीर्तयत्; critical edition anvakīrtayat).

pūrvairācaritaṃ yattatkurājabhirarindama | akṣadyūtaṃ mṛgavadhaḥ kaccideṣāṃ sukhāvaham

"Dicing and the hunting of deer, which bad kings practised of old, tamer of foes — have these brought my sons any happiness?

Note on the text: No speaker heading in Wikisource; Kunti's lament resumes here and runs to verse 89, so it is assigned to her (the input carried Vaishampayana over).

Verse 57 (5.90.57)

tanmāṃ dahati yatkṛṣṇā sabhāyāṃ kurusannidhau | dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ parikliṣṭā yathā na kuśalaṃ tathā

It burns me that Krishna was abused by the sons of Dhritarashtra in the hall before the Kurus, in a way that was anything but decent.

Verse 58 (5.90.58)

nirvāsanaṃ ca nagarātpravrajyā ca parantapa | nānāvidhānāṃ duḥkhānāmāvāso'smi janārdana

Banishment from the city, wandering in exile, scorcher of foes — I have become the dwelling-place of every kind of sorrow, Janardana.

Note on the text: This verse is the critical edition's 5.88.57ab–cd. From here to verse 64 Wikisource's verses and the critical edition's are divided differently.

Verse 59 (5.90.59)

ajñātacaryā bālānāmavarodhaśca mādhava | na me kleśatamaṃ tatsyātputraiḥ saha parantapa

The life in disguise of my children and the loss of their livelihood, Madhava — none of this would have been the worst affliction for me had I been with my sons, scorcher of foes.

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.57ef (reading keśava for माधव); line 2 is 5.88.58ab.

Verse 60 (5.90.60)

duryodhanena nikṛtā varṣamadya caturdaśam | duḥkhādapi sukhaṃ naḥ syādyadi puṇyaphalakṣayaḥ

Wronged by Duryodhana, it is now the fourteenth year. If happiness is the using-up of the fruit of merit, then even from sorrow happiness may come to us.

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.58cd; line 2 is 5.88.59ab (reading na for नः; the page's commentary explains नः).

Verse 61 (5.90.61)

na me viśeṣo jātvāsīddhārtarāṣṭreṣu pāṇḍavaiḥ | tena satyena kṛṣṇa tvāṃ hatāmitraṃ śriyā vṛtam | asmādvimuktaṃ saṅgrāmātpaśyeyaṃ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha

I never made any distinction between the sons of Dhritarashtra and the Pandavas. By that truth, Krishna, may I see you, your enemies slain and wrapped in glory, come safe out of this war together with the Pandavas.

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.59cd; lines 2–3 are 5.88.60ab–cd. Corrected विशेपो → विशेषो (misprint in Wikisource; प for ष; critical edition viśeṣo).

naiva śakyāḥ parājetuṃ sarvaṃ hyeṣāṃ tathāvidham | pitaraṃ tveva garheyaṃ nātmānaṃ na suyodhanam

They cannot be defeated, for their whole conduct is upright. It is my father I should blame — not myself, nor Suyodhana —

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.60ef (reading sattvaṃ … tathāgatam); line 2 is 5.88.61ab.

yenāhaṃ kuntibhojāya dhanaṃ vṛttairivārpitā | bālāṃ māmāryakastubhyaṃ krīḍantīṃ kanduhastikāṃ

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.61cd (reading dhūrtair for वृत्तैः, which the page's commentary explains); line 2 is 5.88.62ab.

Verse 64 (5.90.64)

adāttu kuntibhojāya sakhā sakhye mahātmane | sā'haṃ pitrā ca nikṛtā śvaśuraiśca parantapa | atyantaduḥkhitā kṛṣṇa kiṃ jīvitaphalaṃ mama

gave me to Kuntibhoja, his great-souled friend, out of friendship. Wronged thus by my father and by my fathers-in-law, scorcher of foes, and sorrowful beyond measure, Krishna — what has my life been worth?

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.62cd (reading adadāt for अदात्); lines 2–3 are 5.88.63.

hatvā kurūnmahājanye rājyaṃ prāpya dhanañjayaḥ | bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteyastrīnmedhānāhariṣyati

having slain the Kurus in a great war and won the kingdom, Dhananjaya, son of Kunti, will perform three horse sacrifices together with his brothers.'

Verse 67 (5.90.67)

nāhaṃ tāmabhyasūyāmi namo dharmāya vedhase | kṛṣṇāya mahate nityaṃ dharmo dhārayati prajāḥ

I do not doubt that voice. Homage always to Dharma, the ordainer, to the great Krishna: it is dharma that upholds all creatures.

Verse 68 (5.90.68)

dharmaścedasti vārṣṇeya yathā vāgabhyabhāṣata | tvaṃ cāpi tattathā kṛṣṇa sarvaṃ saṃpādayiṣyasi

If dharma exists, scion of Vrishni, as the voice declared, then you too, Krishna, will bring all of it to pass.

Verse 69 (5.90.69)

na māṃ mādhava vaidhavyaṃ nārthanāśo na vairitā | tathā śokāya dahati yathā putrairvinā bhavaḥ

Neither widowhood, Madhava, nor the loss of wealth, nor enmity burns me with grief so much as this separation from my sons.

Verse 70 (5.90.70)

I, who do not see Dhananjaya, wielder of the Gandiva, best of all who bear arms — what peace can my heart have? This is the fourteenth year since I last saw Yudhishthira,

Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 5.88.69; line 3 is 5.88.70ab. From here to verse 84 each Wikisource verse joins the second half of one critical-edition verse to the first half of the next.

dhanañjayaṃ ca govinda yamau taṃ ca vṛkodaram | jīvanāśaṃ pranaṣṭānāṃ śrāddhaṃ kurvanti mānavāḥ

arthataste mama mṛtāsteṣāṃ cāhaṃ janārdana | brūyā mādhava rājānaṃ dharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram

to all intents they are dead to me, and I to them, Janardana. Tell the king, the righteous Yudhishthira, Madhava:

Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 5.88.71cd; line 2 is 5.88.72ab. Corrected जनार्दना → जनार्दन (misprint in Wikisource; stray long ा on the vocative; critical edition janārdana).

vṛtteḥ kārpaṇyalabdhāyā apratiṣṭhaiva jyāyasī | atho dhanañjayaṃ brūyā nityodyuktaṃ vṛkodaram

Better to have no footing at all than a livelihood gained by abasement. Then tell Dhananjaya and Vrikodara, who is ever ready for action:

na duḥkhaṃ rājyaharaṇaṃ na ca dyūte parājayaḥ | pravrājanaṃ tu putrāṇāṃ na me tadduḥkhakāraṇam

Born of a great house, you came into another as if from one lake into another — a queen, blessed in every way, highly honoured by your husband.

Verse 93 (5.90.93)

vīrasūrvīrapatnī tvaṃ sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ | sukhaduḥkhe mahāprājñe tvādṛśī soḍhumarhati

Mother of heroes, wife of a hero, endowed with every virtue — a woman like you, wise lady, can bear both joy and sorrow.

Note on the text: Corrected मुखदुःखे → सुखदुःखे (misprint in Wikisource; म for स; critical edition sukhaduḥkhe).

Verse 94 (5.90.94)

nidrātandre krodhaharṣau kṣutpipāse himātapau | etāni pārthā nirjitya nityaṃ vīrasukhe ratāḥ

Sleep and sloth, anger and elation, hunger and thirst, cold and heat — the sons of Pritha have conquered these and ever delight in a hero's joys.

Verse 95 (5.90.95)

tyaktagrāmyasukhāḥ pārthā nityaṃ vīrasukhapriyāḥ | na tu svalpena tuṣyeyurmahotsāhā mahābalāḥ

The sons of Pritha have given up the comforts of village life and love only a hero's happiness; great in vigour and might, they will not be content with little.

Verse 96 (5.90.96)

antaṃ dhīrā niṣevante madhyaṃ grāmyasukhapriyāḥ | uttamāṃśca parikleśānbhogāṃścātīva mānuṣān

The resolute seek the extremes; those who love village comforts keep to the middle. The extremes are the greatest hardships and pleasures that surpass the human.

Verse 97 (5.90.97)

The resolute delight in the extremes, not in the middle; they say that reaching the extreme is happiness, and the space between the extremes is sorrow.

Verse 98 (5.90.98)

abhivādayanti bhavatīṃ pāṇḍavāḥ saha kṛṣṇayā | ātmānaṃ te kuśalinaṃ nivedyāhuranāmayam

The Pandavas, together with Krishna, salute you; they send word that they are well and wish you good health.

Verse 99 (5.90.99)

arogānsarvasiddhārthānkṣipraṃ drakṣyasi pāṇḍavān | īśvarānsarvalokasya hatāmitrāñśriyā vṛtān

Soon you will see the Pandavas in good health, their every aim achieved, lords of the whole world, their enemies slain, clothed in glory."

evamāśvāsitā kuntī pratyuvāca janārdanam | putrādhibhirabhidhvastā nigṛhyābuddhijaṃ tamaḥ

Comforted in this way, Kunti, who had been crushed by anguish for her sons, mastered the darkness born of ignorance and answered Janardana:

Note on the text: Speaker corrected to the narrator: this verse is narration (एवमाश्वासिता कुन्ती प्रत्युवाच), not Vasudeva's speech; the input carried वासुदेव over.

avilopena dharmasya anikṛtyā parantapa | prabhāvajñā'smi te kṛṣṇa satyasyābhijanasya ca

without violating dharma and without deceit, scorcher of foes. I know your power, Krishna, your truthfulness and your lineage,

You are the protector, you are the great Brahman; in you all things are established. As you say, so it is; in you it will prove true.

Verse 105 (5.90.105)

kurūṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca lokānāṃ cāparājita | sarvasyaitasya vārṣṇeya gatistvamasi mādhava | prabhāvo buddhivīryaṃ ca tādṛśaṃ tava keśava

Of the Kurus and the Pandavas and of all the worlds, unconquered one — of all this, scion of Vrishni, you are the refuge, Madhava; such are your power, your wisdom and your valour, Keshava."

Note on the text: Removed stray wiki marks (a backtick before the verse and ।।' after it). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as star passage 5.88.103d*0404 (line 3 reading prabhāvaṃ for प्रभावो).
