Duryodhana, Karna and Duhshasana Plan a New Search
After long thought Duryodhana tells the assembly that most of the Pandavas' thirteenth year has passed; if they are not found before it ends they will return like enraged serpents, but if they are discovered in time they must go back to the forest for another term. Karna advises sending fresh, skilled spies in disguise, some dressed as brahmins, to search every land, ford, mine, village, hermitage and mountain. Duhshasana backs Karna's plan, urging that trusted and well-paid spies search again, and suggests that the Pandavas may already have crossed the sea, been eaten by beasts or rakshasas, or perished for good, so Duryodhana should act with a calm mind.

tato duryodhano rājā śrutvā teṣāṃ vacastadā | ciramantarmanā bhūtvā idamāha sabhāsadaḥ
Then King Duryodhana, having heard their words, sat lost in thought for a long while, and then said this to the members of the assembly:

अशक्यं खलु कार्यस्य गतिं ज्ञातुं हि तत्वतः । तस्मात्सर्वे परीक्षध्वं क्वनु स्युः पाण्डवा गताः ॥
aśakyaṃ khalu kāryasya gatiṃ jñātuṃ hi tatvataḥ | tasmātsarve parīkṣadhvaṃ kvanu syuḥ pāṇḍavā gatāḥ
It is indeed impossible to know truly how a matter will turn out. Therefore all of you, find out where the Pandavas may have gone.

alpāvaśiṣṭaḥ kālastu gato bhūyiṣṭha eva ca | teṣāmajñātacaryāyāmasminvarṣe trayodaśe
Little of the time remains; the greater part of their period of living unknown, in this thirteenth year, has already passed.

api varṣasya śeṣaṃ te hyatīyuriha pāṇḍavāḥ | nivṛttasamayāste hi satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ

kṣaranta iva nāgendrāḥ sarve hyāśīviṣopamāḥ | duḥkhādbhaveyuḥ saṃrabdhāḥ kauravānprati te dhruvam
like great serpents spitting venom, all of them deadly as poisonous snakes, they will surely turn in fury on the Kauravas because of what they have suffered.

ajñātasamaye jñātāḥ kṛcchrarūpasamāśritāḥ | praviśeyurjitakrodhāstāvadeva punarvanam
If they are recognised while the time of hiding still runs, then, in their wretched guise and mastering their anger, they must go back into the forest for the same length of time again.
