Drona and Bhishma on Where the Pandavas Live
Drona tells the assembly that men as brave, learned, disciplined and righteous as the Pandavas, devoted to Yudhishthira and protected by the gods, cannot perish; their term is not yet over, and they should be searched for with care by brahmins, spies, siddhas and ascetics. Bhishma agrees that the Pandavas, guarded by their austerity and valour and loyal to Keshava, will not be destroyed. Though Kurus and Pandavas are equal to him, he describes how to recognise the land where Yudhishthira lives in hiding: its people are generous, truthful and free of envy, the rains come on time, cattle give plenty of milk, there is no disease, theft or fear, and festivals and sacrifices abound. He asks Duryodhana to weigh this and act on it quickly for the good of the family.

Verse 1 (4.31.1)
athā'bravītsabhāmadhye droṇaḥ sūkṣmārthadarśivān | na tādṛśā vinaśyanti nāpi yānti parābhavam
Then Drona, who could see into subtle matters, said in the midst of the assembly: 'Men like them do not perish, nor do they meet defeat.'
Note on the text: The CE reads mahāvīryo … tattvārthadarśivān for सभामध्ये … Drona's speech begins in line 2; Wikisource prints no heading, so the verse stays with the narrator.

Verse 2 (4.31.2)
śūrāśca kṛtavidyāśca buddhimanto jitendriyāḥ | dharmajñāḥ satyasandhāśca yudhiṣṭhiramanuvratāḥ
They are brave and accomplished in learning, wise and masters of their senses, knowers of dharma, true to their word, and devoted to Yudhishthira —

Verse 3 (4.31.3)
nītidharmārthatatvajñaṃ pitṛvacca samāhitam | dharme sthitaṃ satyadhṛtiṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ śreṣṭhāpacāyinam
to him who knows the essence of policy, dharma and wealth, who looks after them like a father, who stands firm in dharma, steadfast in truth, the eldest, who honours his betters.

anuvratā mahātmāno bhrātaro bhrātaraṃ priyam | ajātaśatruṃ śrīmantaṃ sarvabhrātṝnanuvratam
The great-souled brothers are devoted to their beloved brother, the glorious Ajatashatru, who in turn is devoted to all his brothers.

Verse 5 (4.31.5)

teṣāṃ tathāvidheyānāṃ nibhṛtānāṃ mahātmanām | kimarthaṃ nītimānprājñaḥ śreyo naiṣāṃ kariṣyati
Why would that wise king, skilled in policy, not secure the good of such obedient, self-restrained and great-souled brothers?

Therefore search with care; their time is not yet over. They will not come to destruction — that is my settled conviction.

cintyatāṃ caiva yatkāryaṃ tacca kṣipramakālikam | kriyatāṃ sādhu saṃcintya vāsaścaiṣāṃ pracintyatām
Let what has to be done be thought out, and after careful reflection let it be done quickly and without delay; and let thought be given to where they are living.
Note on the text: Corrected प्रचिन्त्यतां → प्रचिन्त्यताम् at the verse end (pausa form). Speaker set to Drona: the verse is wholly his direct speech, and Wikisource prints no speaker heading for it (it carried वैशंपायन over it).
Verse 8 (4.31.8)

Let such a plan be laid down that news may be had of the sons of Pandu, who are steadfast in all their aims.
Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of CE 4.26.8ab (yathāvat for यथा च); line 2 is the CE apparatus 4.26.8b*0526, line 1. Speaker set to Drona: the verse is wholly his direct speech, and Wikisource prints no speaker heading for it (it carried वैशंपायन over it).

sarvopāyairyatasva tvaṃ yathā paśyasi pāṇḍavān | durjñeyāḥ khalu śūrāste rakṣyā nityaṃ ca daivataiḥ
Strive by every means so that you may find the Pandavas. Those heroes are hard to discover, and the gods always protect them.
Note on the text: Line 1 is the CE apparatus 4.26.8b*0526, line 2; line 2 is a variant of CE 4.26.8cd (apāpās tapasā vṛtāḥ, "sinless and wrapped in austerity", for śuddhātmā mānavānpārthaḥ satyavānnītimāñśuciḥ | tejorāśibhirāpūrṇo dahedapi ca cakṣuṣā
The son of Pritha is pure of soul and high-minded, truthful, skilled in policy and upright. Filled with masses of splendour, he could burn a man with his very gaze.
Note on the text: The CE's second line reads tejorāśir asaṃkhyeyo gṛhṇīyād api cakṣuṣī ("a boundless mass of splendour, he could seize the very eyes"). Speaker set to Drona: the verse is wholly his direct speech, and Wikisource prints no speaker heading for it (it carried वैशंपायन over it).
Verse 11 (4.31.11)

tasmādyatnaśca kriyatāṃ bhūyaśca mṛgayāmahe | brāhmaṇaiścārakaiḥ siddhaistāpasairnipuṇairapi
So let an effort be made, and let us search again, through brahmins, spies, siddhas and skilled ascetics,
Note on the text: A variant of CE 4.26.10 (vijñāya kriyatāṃ tasmād; its last quarter reads ye cānye tadvido janāḥ). Speaker set to Drona: the verse is wholly his direct speech, and Wikisource prints no speaker heading for it (it carried वैशंपायन over it).
Verse 12 (4.31.12)
vividhaistatparaiḥ samyaṅnirbhīkaistajjñasaṃmataiḥ | anveṣṭavyā manuṣyendra pāṇḍavāśchannacāriṇaḥ
through men of many kinds, devoted to the task, thoroughly fearless and esteemed by those who know the work. The Pandavas, who go about in disguise, must be sought out, lord of men.
Note on the text: Corrected सम्यङ्विर्भीकैस् → सम्यङ्निर्भीकैस् (misprint in Wikisource; व for न — सम्यक् + निर्भीकैः; विर्भीक is no word). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension) at this point; it repeats, with variants, CE 4.25.11 from Karna's speech (Wikisource 4.30.14ab and 12b). Speaker set to Drona: the verse is wholly his direct speech, and Wikisource prints no speaker heading for it (it carried वैशंपायन over it).

tasminnuparate vākye ācāryasya mahātmanaḥ | anantaramuvācedaṃ vākyaṃ hetvarthasaṃmitam
when the great-souled teacher had finished speaking, spoke next these words, well weighed in reason and purpose.

yudhiṣṭhire samāyuktāṃ dharmajñe dharmasaṃhitām | pāṇḍave nityamavyagrāṃ giraṃ bhīṣmaḥ samādade
Bhishma began to speak words that concerned Yudhishthira, the knower of dharma — words in keeping with dharma, and ever measured toward the Pandava —
Note on the text: Line 1 is a variant of CE 4.27.3ab (samāsaktāṃ … dharmasaṃśritām); line 2 is the CE apparatus 4.27.3b*0527.

asatsu durlabhāṃ nityaṃ satāṃ cābhimatāṃ sadā | bhīṣmastvabhyavadattatra giraṃ sādhubhirarcitām
words always rare among the wicked and always prized by the good. There Bhishma spoke words honoured by the virtuous:
Note on the text: Corrected सद → सदा (misprint in Wikisource; dropped vowel sign; the CE reads sadā). The verse is CE 4.27.3cdef (bhīṣmaḥ samavadat for भीष्मस्त्वभ्यवदत्).

Ever devoted to the dharma of kshatriyas, always followers of Keshava, they are heroes of the first rank, great-souled and of great strength.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension); the CE gives it only in its apparatus, 4.27.6d*0530 (before CE 4.27.7, where Wikisource has it after). na tviyaṃ sādhu vaktavyā tasya nītiḥ kathaṃcana | vṛddhānuśāsane tāta tiṣṭhataḥ satyaśīlinaḥ
Yet in no way is it right to speak openly, my son, of the policy of one who keeps to the counsel of his elders and is truthful by nature.
Note on the text: Line 1 stands between CE 4.27.10ab (sā tv iyaṃ sādhu vaktavyā na tv anītiḥ kathaṃ cana) and the apparatus 4.27.9d*0531 (na tv iyaṃ mādṛśair nītis tasya vācyā kathaṃ cana); line 2 is CE 4.27.10cd. With his heroic brothers and with Krishna beside him, why should that great king of great fame not secure his own good?

The Pandava was wronged before, as you well know; he was constantly harassed in the city, and now by those who covet the kingdom. Therefore that king, prudent by nature, goes about in disguise.

nādhayo hi mahārāja na vyādhiḥ kṣatriyarṣabha | pure janapade vā'pi yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
There are no torments of mind, great king, nor sickness, bull among kshatriyas, in the city or the countryside where King Yudhishthira is.
