Skandha 10 · Chapter 3
The Birth of Lord Krishna
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.3.1)
śrī-śuka uvāca atha sarva-guṇopetaḥ kālaḥ parama-śobhanaḥ yarhy evājana-janmarkṣaṁ śāntarkṣa-graha-tārakam
Shri Shukadeva said: Thereafter came that most auspicious time, endowed with every excellence, when the birth-star and the other constellations, planets and stars stood tranquil — the hour of the birthless Lord's advent.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.3.2)
diśaḥ prasedur gaganaṁ nirmaloḍu-gaṇodayam mahī maṅgala-bhūyiṣṭha- pura-grāma-vrajākarā
The directions grew serene, the sky shone with the rising of clear stars, and the earth, rich with towns, villages, mines and cattle-pastures, became filled with auspiciousness.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.3.3)
nadyaḥ prasanna-salilā hradā jalaruha-śriyaḥ dvijāli-kula-sannāda- stavakā vana-rājayaḥ
The rivers ran with clear water, the lakes grew beautiful with lotuses in bloom, and the ranks of forest trees resounded with the calls of birds and swarms of bees.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.3.4)
vavau vāyuḥ sukha-sparśaḥ puṇya-gandhavahaḥ śuciḥ agnayaś ca dvijātīnāṁ śāntās tatra samindhata
A pure breeze began to blow, pleasant to the touch and laden with holy fragrance, and there the sacred fires of the brahmins burned with a still, untroubled flame.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.3.5)
manāṁsy āsan prasannāni sādhūnām asura-druhām jāyamāne ’jane tasmin nedur dundubhayaḥ samam
The hearts of the saintly, ever hostile to the demons, grew glad, and as that birthless one took birth, the kettledrums resounded together.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.3.6)
jaguḥ kinnara-gandharvās tuṣṭuvuḥ siddha-cāraṇāḥ vidyādharyaś ca nanṛtur apsarobhiḥ samaṁ mudā
The Kinnaras and Gandharvas sang, the Siddhas and Charanas offered praise, and the Vidyadhari women danced in joy together with the Apsaras.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.3.7)
mumucur munayo devāḥ sumanāṁsi mudānvitāḥ mandaṁ mandaṁ jaladharā jagarjur anusāgaram
Sages and gods, filled with delight, showered flowers, and the clouds thundered softly, like the low roar of the ocean.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.3.8)
niśīthe tama-udbhūte jāyamāne janārdane devakyāṁ deva-rūpiṇyāṁ viṣṇuḥ sarva-guhā-śayaḥ āvirāsīd yathā prācyāṁ diśīndur iva puṣkalaḥ
At midnight, when darkness lay thick, as Janardana took birth, Vishnu, who dwells within the heart of every being, appeared from the divine Devaki, as the full moon rises upon the eastern horizon.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.3.9)
tam adbhutaṁ bālakam ambujekṣaṇaṁ catur-bhujaṁ śaṅkha-gadādy-udāyudham śrīvatsa-lakṣmaṁ gala-śobhi-kaustubhaṁ pītāmbaraṁ sāndra-payoda-saubhagam
That wondrous infant, lotus-eyed, four-armed, bearing conch and mace and the other weapons, marked on his chest with the Shrivatsa sign, the Kaustubha jewel gleaming at his throat, robed in yellow, his hue lovely as a dense-massed cloud —
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.3.10)
mahārha-vaidūrya-kirīṭa-kuṇḍala- tviṣā pariṣvakta-sahasra-kuntalam uddāma-kāñcy-aṅgada-kaṅkaṇādibhir virocamānaṁ vasudeva aikṣata
his thousand locks caught in the radiance of a crown and earrings set with priceless beryl, resplendent with a raised girdle, armlets and bangles — this Vasudeva now beheld.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.3.11)
sa vismayotphulla-vilocano hariṁ sutaṁ vilokyānakadundubhis tadā kṛṣṇāvatārotsava-sambhramo ’spṛśan mudā dvijebhyo ’yutam āpluto gavām
Vasudeva, called Anakadundubhi, his eyes wide with wonder at the sight of this son who was Hari himself, in the rapture of that festival of Krishna's advent, mentally gave away ten thousand cows to the brahmins with joy.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.3.12)
athainam astaud avadhārya pūruṣaṁ paraṁ natāṅgaḥ kṛta-dhīḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ sva-rociṣā bhārata sūtikā-gṛhaṁ virocayantaṁ gata-bhīḥ prabhāva-vit
O descendant of Bharata, recognizing him then as the Supreme Person, Vasudeva, now fearless and aware of his greatness, bowed his body, fixed his mind, folded his hands, and began to praise that child who was lighting up the very birth-chamber with his own radiance.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.3.13)
śrī-vasudeva uvāca vidito ’si bhavān sākṣāt puruṣaḥ prakṛteḥ paraḥ kevalānubhavānanda- svarūpaḥ sarva-buddhi-dṛk
Shri Vasudeva said: I know you now — you are directly that Person beyond material nature, pure experience and bliss itself, the witness of every understanding.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.3.14)
sa eva svaprakṛtyedaṁ sṛṣṭvāgre tri-guṇātmakam tad anu tvaṁ hy apraviṣṭaḥ praviṣṭa iva bhāvyase
You alone, through your own nature, first created this world made of the three qualities, and thereafter, though never truly entering it, seem to have entered.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.3.15)
yatheme ’vikṛtā bhāvās tathā te vikṛtaiḥ saha nānā-vīryāḥ pṛthag-bhūtā virājaṁ janayanti hi
As these unmodified principles, joined with their modifications, though becoming many and distinct in their powers, together bring forth the cosmic form — so too are you.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.3.16)
sannipatya samutpādya dṛśyante ’nugatā iva prāg eva vidyamānatvān na teṣām iha sambhavaḥ
Coming together and giving rise to creation, they appear as though following after it — yet, being already present beforehand, they do not in truth come into being here anew.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.3.17)
evaṁ bhavān buddhy-anumeya-lakṣaṇair grāhyair guṇaiḥ sann api tad-guṇāgrahaḥ anāvṛtatvād bahir antaraṁ na te sarvasya sarvātmana ātma-vastunaḥ
Thus, though marked by qualities inferable through the intellect, you remain untouched by those very qualities, for you, the self of all and the substance of every self, being wholly unveiled, know no distinction of outer and inner.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.3.18)
ya ātmano dṛśya-guṇeṣu sann iti vyavasyate sva-vyatirekato ’budhaḥ vinānuvādaṁ na ca tan manīṣitaṁ samyag yatas tyaktam upādadat pumān
The ignorant man who determines the self to exist within the visible qualities, apart from proper consideration, is simply an unlearned soul mistaken about his own distinct nature — and so a man ends up grasping precisely what ought to have been let go.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.3.19)
tvatto ’sya janma-sthiti-saṁyamān vibho vadanty anīhād aguṇād avikriyāt tvayīśvare brahmaṇi no virudhyate tvad-āśrayatvād upacaryate guṇaiḥ
O all-pervading one, the wise declare that this world's creation, maintenance and dissolution proceed from you, though you are without endeavor, without qualities, and without change. In you, the Lord, the Absolute, there is no contradiction — it is only because they rest in you that the material qualities appear to act at all.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.3.20)
sa tvaṁ tri-loka-sthitaye sva-māyayā bibharṣi śuklaṁ khalu varṇam ātmanaḥ sargāya raktaṁ rajasopabṛṁhitaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ ca varṇaṁ tamasā janātyaye
You it is who, through your own maya, for the preservation of the three worlds assume a white hue; for creation, a red hue infused with passion; and at the time of dissolution, in the presence of darkness, a black hue.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.3.21)
tvam asya lokasya vibho rirakṣiṣur gṛhe ’vatīrṇo ’si mamākhileśvara rājanya-saṁjñāsura-koṭi-yūthapair nirvyūhyamānā nihaniṣyase camūḥ
O all-pervading one, O Lord of all, desiring to protect this world you have descended in my home. The armies marshalled by the countless demon-generals who call themselves kings will be destroyed by your hand.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.3.22)
O Lord of the gods, this uncivilized Kamsa, on hearing the prophecy of your birth in our house, has already slain your elder brothers. As soon as he learns of your descent, he will come rushing here, weapon in hand.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.3.23)
śrī-śuka uvāca athainam ātmajaṁ vīkṣya mahā-puruṣa-lakṣaṇam devakī tam upādhāvat kaṁsād bhītā suvismitā
Shri Shukadeva said: Beholding her son thus marked with the signs of the Supreme Person, Devaki, afraid of Kamsa and utterly astonished, began to praise him.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.3.24)
śrī-devaky uvāca rūpaṁ yat tat prāhur avyaktam ādyaṁ brahma jyotir nirguṇaṁ nirvikāram sattā-mātraṁ nirviśeṣaṁ nirīhaṁ sa tvaṁ sākṣād viṣṇur adhyātma-dīpaḥ
Shri Devaki said: That form which the Vedas call unmanifest, primordial, Brahman, light, without attributes, unchanging, mere existence itself, without distinction, without desire — that, directly, are you, Vishnu, the very lamp of the inner self.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.3.25)
naṣṭe loke dvi-parārdhāvasāne mahā-bhūteṣv ādi-bhūtaṁ gateṣu vyakte ’vyaktaṁ kāla-vegena yāte bhavān ekaḥ śiṣyate ’śeṣa-saṁjñaḥ
When the world is destroyed, at the end of two parardhas, when the great elements dissolve into their primal cause, and the manifest passes by the force of time into the unmanifest, you alone remain, bearing within yourself every name that ever was.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.3.26)
yo ’yaṁ kālas tasya te ’vyakta-bandho ceṣṭām āhuś ceṣṭate yena viśvam nimeṣādir vatsarānto mahīyāṁs taṁ tveśānaṁ kṣema-dhāma prapadye
O kinsman of the unmanifest, this time, by whose working the universe itself works, stretching vast from the blink of an eye to the turning year, is said to be none other than your own activity. O Lord, O abode of all blessing, I take refuge in you.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.3.27)
martyo mṛtyu-vyāla-bhītaḥ palāyan lokān sarvān nirbhayaṁ nādhyagacchat tvat pādābjaṁ prāpya yadṛcchayādya susthaḥ śete mṛtyur asmād apaiti
Fleeing in terror of the serpent of death, no mortal has ever found fearlessness in any world he ran to. But now, having reached your lotus feet quite without seeking them, he sleeps at ease, and death itself withdraws from him.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.3.28)
sa tvaṁ ghorād ugrasenātmajān nas trāhi trastān bhṛtya-vitrāsa-hāsi rūpaṁ cedaṁ pauruṣaṁ dhyāna-dhiṣṇyaṁ mā pratyakṣaṁ māṁsa-dṛśāṁ kṛṣīṣṭhāḥ
Protect us, then, terrified as we are by the fearsome dread of Ugrasena's son Kamsa — for it is you who takes away the fear of your servants. This form of yours, the very seat of the yogi's meditation, please do not leave visible to eyes of flesh.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.3.29)
janma te mayy asau pāpo mā vidyān madhusūdana samudvije bhavad-dhetoḥ kaṁsād aham adhīra-dhīḥ
O Madhusudana, let not that sinful Kamsa learn that this birth of yours is from me — it is this very fear that leaves my unsteady mind so troubled.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.3.30)
upasaṁhara viśvātmann ado rūpam alaukikam śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma- śriyā juṣṭaṁ catur-bhujam
O soul of the universe, withdraw now this form beyond the ordinary, adorned with the glory of conch, discus, mace and lotus in your four hands.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.3.31)
viśvaṁ yad etat sva-tanau niśānte yathāvakāśaṁ puruṣaḥ paro bhavān bibharti so ’yaṁ mama garbhago ’bhūd aho nṛ-lokasya viḍambanaṁ hi tat
You are that Supreme Person who, at the hour of dissolution, holds this entire universe within your own body without effort — and that very you has now come forth from my womb! Ah, this will surely become a mockery in the eyes of the world.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.3.32)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca tvam eva pūrva-sarge ’bhūḥ pṛśniḥ svāyambhuve sati tadāyaṁ sutapā nāma prajāpatir akalmaṣaḥ
Shri Bhagavan said: In an earlier birth, in the age of Svayambhuva, you were the chaste Prishni, and this Vasudeva was then the sinless Prajapati named Sutapa.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.3.33)
yuvāṁ vai brahmaṇādiṣṭau prajā-sarge yadā tataḥ sanniyamyendriya-grāmaṁ tepāthe paramaṁ tapaḥ
When you two were commanded by Brahma to bring forth progeny, you first restrained your whole array of senses and undertook the highest austerity.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.3.34)
varṣa-vātātapa-hima- gharma-kāla-guṇān anu sahamānau śvāsa-rodha- vinirdhūta-mano-malau
Enduring rain, wind, blazing sun, frost and heat through the changing seasons, cleansing the mind's impurity through the discipline of breath —
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.3.35)
śīrṇa-parṇānilāhārāv upaśāntena cetasā mattaḥ kāmān abhīpsantau mad-ārādhanam īhatuḥ
living on withered leaves and air alone, with tranquil minds, longing for the fulfillment of your desire from me, you both devoted yourselves to my worship.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.3.36)
evaṁ vāṁ tapyatos tīvraṁ tapaḥ parama-duṣkaram divya-varṣa-sahasrāṇi dvādaśeyur mad-ātmanoḥ
Thus, your minds fixed wholly on me, you both performed this severe and most difficult austerity for twelve thousand celestial years.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.3.37)
tadā vāṁ parituṣṭo ’ham amunā vapuṣānaghe tapasā śraddhayā nityaṁ bhaktyā ca hṛdi bhāvitaḥ
O sinless mother, then I, held always within your hearts through that austerity, faith and devotion, became greatly pleased with you both.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.3.38)
prādurāsaṁ varada-rāḍ yuvayoḥ kāma-ditsayā vriyatāṁ vara ity ukte mādṛśo vāṁ vṛtaḥ sutaḥ
I, greatest of the givers of boons, appeared before you both, desiring to grant your wish, and said, 'Choose a boon' — and you chose a son like myself.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.3.39)
ajuṣṭa-grāmya-viṣayāv anapatyau ca dam-patī na vavrāthe ’pavargaṁ me mohitau deva-māyayā
Untouched by ordinary worldly desire, yet childless, you two, husband and wife, bewildered by the divine maya of love, did not choose liberation from me.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.3.40)
gate mayi yuvāṁ labdhvā varaṁ mat-sadṛśaṁ sutam grāmyān bhogān abhuñjāthāṁ yuvāṁ prāpta-manorathau
When I had vanished, having received the boon of a son like myself, and your desire thus fulfilled, you both enjoyed ordinary worldly pleasures.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.3.41)
adṛṣṭvānyatamaṁ loke śīlaudārya-guṇaiḥ samam ahaṁ suto vām abhavaṁ pṛśnigarbha iti śrutaḥ
Finding none other in this world equal to you in virtue and generosity, I became your son and became known by the name Prishnigarbha.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.3.42)
tayor vāṁ punar evāham adityām āsa kaśyapāt upendra iti vikhyāto vāmanatvāc ca vāmanaḥ
From those same two of you, I again took birth, born of Aditi through Kashyapa, and became famed as Upendra, and, because of my dwarf form, as Vamana.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.3.43)
tṛtīye ’smin bhave ’haṁ vai tenaiva vapuṣātha vām jāto bhūyas tayor eva satyaṁ me vyāhṛtaṁ sati
In this third birth, I have been born again, in that very same form, of you two once more. O virtuous one, know these words of mine to be the truth.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.3.44)
etad vāṁ darśitaṁ rūpaṁ prāg-janma-smaraṇāya me nānyathā mad-bhavaṁ jñānaṁ martya-liṅgena jāyate
This form I have shown you only so that you might recall my earlier births. Otherwise, bearing the marks of a mortal, this knowledge of my true nature could never have arisen for you.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.3.45)
yuvāṁ māṁ putra-bhāvena brahma-bhāvena cāsakṛt cintayantau kṛta-snehau yāsyethe mad-gatiṁ parām
Thinking of me again and again, both as your son and yet as the Absolute itself, bound in love, you two shall attain my supreme abode.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.3.46)
śrī-śuka uvāca ity uktvāsīd dharis tūṣṇīṁ bhagavān ātma-māyayā pitroḥ sampaśyatoḥ sadyo babhūva prākṛtaḥ śiśuḥ
Shri Shukadeva said: Having spoken thus, Bhagavan Hari fell silent through his own maya, and there, before the very eyes of his parents, at once became an ordinary human infant.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.3.47)
tataś ca śaurir bhagavat-pracoditaḥ sutaṁ samādāya sa sūtikā-gṛhāt yadā bahir gantum iyeṣa tarhy ajā yā yoga-māyājani nanda-jāyayā
Then, moved by the Lord, Shauri Vasudeva made ready to carry his son out from the birth-chamber — and just then the unborn Yogamaya took birth as the daughter of Nanda's wife.
Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.3.48)
tayā hṛta-pratyaya-sarva-vṛttiṣu dvāḥ-stheṣu paureṣv api śāyiteṣv atha dvāraś ca sarvāḥ pihitā duratyayā bṛhat-kapāṭāyasa-kīla-śṛṅkhalaiḥ
By her power, all the doorkeepers' faculties were seized away and they fell asleep, the other townsfolk too sank into deep slumber, and every door, barred with iron pins and great chains, impossible though it seemed to pass, opened of itself.
Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.3.49)
tāḥ kṛṣṇa-vāhe vasudeva āgate svayaṁ vyavaryanta yathā tamo raveḥ vavarṣa parjanya upāṁśu-garjitaḥ śeṣo ’nvagād vāri nivārayan phaṇaiḥ
As Vasudeva came bearing Krishna, they withdrew of themselves, as darkness withdraws before the sun. The clouds rained on, thundering softly, and Sheshanaga followed behind, warding off the rain with his spread hoods.
Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.3.50)
maghoni varṣaty asakṛd yamānujā gambhīra-toyaugha-javormi-phenilā bhayānakāvarta-śatākulā nadī mārgaṁ dadau sindhur iva śriyaḥ pateḥ
The Yamuna, swollen with the ceaseless rain sent by Indra, foaming with the swift waves of its deep current, churned with a hundred terrifying whirlpools, yet gave way and opened a path, just as the ocean once did for the Lord of Shri.
Verse 51 (bhagavata.10.3.51)
nanda-vrajaṁ śaurir upetya tatra tān gopān prasuptān upalabhya nidrayā sutaṁ yaśodā-śayane nidhāya tat- sutām upādāya punar gṛhān agāt
Reaching Nanda's Vraja, and finding all the cowherds there sunk deep in sleep, Vasudeva laid his own son upon Yashoda's bed, took up her daughter, and returned once more to his own house.
Verse 52 (bhagavata.10.3.52)
devakyāḥ śayane nyasya vasudevo ’tha dārikām pratimucya pador loham āste pūrvavad āvṛtaḥ
Laying that infant girl on Devaki's bed, Vasudeva fastened the iron shackles back onto his own feet and remained there, bound as before.
Verse 53 (bhagavata.10.3.53)
yaśodā nanda-patnī ca jātaṁ param abudhyata na tal-liṅgaṁ pariśrāntā nidrayāpagata-smṛtiḥ
Yashoda, wife of Nanda, had no awareness at all of what child had been born, for, worn out by the labor of childbirth, she had lost consciousness in sleep.
