Krishna and Balarama Enter Mathura
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.41.1)
śrī-śuka uvāca stuvatas tasya bhagavān darśayitvā jale vapuḥ bhūyaḥ samāharat kṛṣṇo naṭo nāṭyam ivātmanaḥ
Sukadeva Gosvami said: While Akrura was still praying, Bhagavan Krishna withdrew the form He had shown him in the water, just as an actor winds up his own performance.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.41.2)
so ’pi cāntarhitaṁ vīkṣya jalād unmajya satvaraḥ kṛtvā cāvaśyakaṁ sarvaṁ vismito ratham āgamat
Seeing that form disappear, Akrura too rose quickly from the water, and having completed all his obligatory rites, came back to the chariot, filled with wonder.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.41.3)
tam apṛcchad dhṛṣīkeśaḥ kiṁ te dṛṣṭam ivādbhutam bhūmau viyati toye vā tathā tvāṁ lakṣayāmahe
Hrishikesha asked him: What wonder have you seen — on the earth, in the sky, or in the water? From the look on your face, We can tell you have seen something.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.41.4)
śrī-akrūra uvāca adbhutānīha yāvanti bhūmau viyati vā jale tvayi viśvātmake tāni kiṁ me ’dṛṣṭaṁ vipaśyataḥ
Sri Akrura said: Whatever wonders there may be here on earth, in the sky, or in the water — all of them exist within You, the Soul of the universe. Seeing You, what is there left for me that I have not seen?
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.41.5)
yatrādbhutāni sarvāṇi bhūmau viyati vā jale taṁ tvānupaśyato brahman kiṁ me dṛṣṭam ihādbhutam
O Brahman, in whom reside all the wonders that exist — on the earth, in the sky, or in the water — now that I behold You, what wonder in this world remains for me to see?
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.41.6)
ity uktvā codayām āsa syandanaṁ gāndinī-sutaḥ mathurām anayad rāmaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ caiva dinātyaye
Having said this, Gandini's son urged the chariot on, and as the day drew to its close, he brought Rama and Krishna into Mathura.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.41.7)
mārge grāma-janā rājaṁs tatra tatropasaṅgatāḥ vasudeva-sutau vīkṣya prītā dṛṣṭiṁ na cādaduḥ
O King, wherever the village people gathered along the road, they were so delighted at the sight of Vasudeva's two sons that they could not withdraw their eyes.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.41.8)
tāvad vrajaukasas tatra nanda-gopādayo ’grataḥ puropavanam āsādya pratīkṣanto ’vatasthire
Meanwhile the residents of Vraja, headed by Nanda the cowherd chief, having gone on ahead and reached a garden on the city's outskirts, stood there waiting.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.41.9)
tān sametyāha bhagavān akrūraṁ jagad-īśvaraḥ gṛhītvā pāṇinā pāṇiṁ praśritaṁ prahasann iva
Meeting them there, Bhagavan, the Lord of the universe, took Akrura's hand in His own and, smiling as if at his humility, spoke to him.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.41.10)
bhavān praviśatām agre saha-yānaḥ purīṁ gṛham vayaṁ tv ihāvamucyātha tato drakṣyāmahe purīm
[Krishna said:] You go ahead with the chariot and enter the city, then go home. We will rest here a while, and afterward go see the city.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.41.11)
śrī-akrūra uvāca nāhaṁ bhavadbhyāṁ rahitaḥ pravekṣye mathurāṁ prabho tyaktuṁ nārhasi māṁ nātha bhaktaṁ te bhakta-vatsala
Sri Akrura said: O Lord, I shall not enter Mathura apart from You two. O master, it is not right for You, who are so affectionate to Your devotees, to abandon me, Your own devotee.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.41.12)
āgaccha yāma gehān naḥ sa-nāthān kurv adhokṣaja sahāgrajaḥ sa-gopālaiḥ suhṛdbhiś ca suhṛttama
Come, O Adhokshaja, let us go to my home — with Your elder brother, the cowherds, and our friends — and grace it with its rightful master, O best of friends.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.41.13)
punīhi pāda-rajasā gṛhān no gṛha-medhinām yac-chaucenānutṛpyanti pitaraḥ sāgnayaḥ surāḥ
Purify our householder's home with the dust of Your feet — the purity of which satisfies the forefathers, the sacrificial fires, and the gods.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.41.14)
avanijyāṅghri-yugalam āsīt ślokyo balir mahān aiśvaryam atulaṁ lebhe gatiṁ caikāntināṁ tu yā
By washing that pair of feet, the great and celebrated Bali attained incomparable sovereignty — and also that destination which belongs to single-minded devotees alone.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.41.15)
āpas te ’ṅghry-avanejanyas trīḻ lokān śucayo ’punan śirasādhatta yāḥ śarvaḥ svar yātāḥ sagarātmajāḥ
The pure water that washed Your feet purified the three worlds; Lord Shiva bore it upon his own head, and by that water the dead sons of Sagara attained heaven.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.41.16)
deva-deva jagan-nātha puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtana yadūttamottamaḥ-śloka nārāyaṇa namo ’stu te
O God of gods, Lord of the universe, whose hearing and chanting bring merit, O best of the Yadus, of excellent renown, O Narayana, obeisance to You.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.41.17)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca āyāsye bhavato geham aham arya-samanvitaḥ yadu-cakra-druhaṁ hatvā vitariṣye suhṛt-priyam
Sri Bhagavan said: I shall come to your house together with My elder brother — but first, having slain the enemy of the Yadu race, I must grant My well-wishers what is dear to them.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.41.18)
śrī-śuka uvāca evam ukto bhagavatā so ’krūro vimanā iva purīṁ praviṣṭaḥ kaṁsāya karmāvedya gṛhaṁ yayau
Sukadeva said: Thus addressed by Bhagavan, Akrura, as though downcast, entered the city; and having reported his mission to Kamsa, he went on to his own home.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.41.19)
athāparāhne bhagavān kṛṣṇaḥ saṅkarṣaṇānvitaḥ mathurāṁ prāviśad gopair didṛkṣuḥ parivāritaḥ
Then, as evening approached, Bhagavan Krishna, together with Sankarshana, surrounded by the cowherd boys eager to see the city, entered Mathura.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.41.20)
dadarśa tāṁ sphāṭika-tuṇga-gopura- dvārāṁ bṛhad-dhema-kapāṭa-toraṇām tāmrāra-koṣṭhāṁ parikhā-durāsadām udyāna-ramyopavanopaśobhitām
He beheld that city — with its crystal gate-towers rising high, its doorways framed by great golden-doored arches, its copper-lined storehouses, its moats impossible to cross, and adorned all about with lovely gardens and groves.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.41.21)
sauvarṇa-śṛṅgāṭaka-harmya-niṣkuṭaiḥ śreṇī-sabhābhir bhavanair upaskṛtām vaidūrya-vajrāmala-nīla-vidrumair muktā-haridbhir valabhīṣu vediṣu
It was adorned with golden intersections and mansions with private gardens, furnished with rows of assembly-halls, and its balconies and platforms were set with cat's-eye stones, diamonds, crystal, sapphire, coral, pearl, and topaz.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.41.22)
juṣṭeṣu jālāmukha-randhra-kuṭṭimeṣv āviṣṭa-pārāvata-barhi-nāditām saṁsikta-rathyāpaṇa-mārga-catvarāṁ prakīrṇa-mālyāṅkura-lāja-taṇḍulām
In the openings of its lattice windows and its jewel-set floors dwelt cooing pigeons and peacocks; its avenues, marketplaces, roads and squares had been freshly sprinkled with water and strewn with flowers, fresh sprouts, parched grain and rice.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.41.23)
āpūrṇa-kumbhair dadhi-candanokṣitaiḥ prasūna-dīpāvalibhiḥ sa-pallavaiḥ sa-vṛnda-rambhā-kramukaiḥ sa-ketubhiḥ sv-alaṅkṛta-dvāra-gṛhāṁ sa-paṭṭikaiḥ
Its doorways were graced with brimming water-pots smeared with yogurt and sandalwood paste, hung with flowers, rows of lamps and fresh shoots, and adorned with clusters of banana and areca-palm, with banners and decorative bands.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.41.24)
tāṁ sampraviṣṭau vasudeva-nandanau vṛtau vayasyair naradeva-vartmanā draṣṭuṁ samīyus tvaritāḥ pura-striyo harmyāṇi caivāruruhur nṛpotsukāḥ
As Vasudeva's two sons, surrounded by their friends, entered that city along the royal road, the city's women hurried to see Them, and the eager among them climbed to the rooftops of the mansions.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.41.25)
kāścid viparyag-dhṛta-vastra-bhūṣaṇā vismṛtya caikaṁ yugaleṣv athāparāḥ kṛtaika-patra-śravanaika-nūpurā nāṅktvā dvitīyaṁ tv aparāś ca locanam
In their haste some women put on their clothes and ornaments back to front; others, forgetting one of a pair, wore only a single earring and a single anklet, while still others lined only one eye, leaving the other bare.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.41.26)
aśnantya ekās tad apāsya sotsavā abhyajyamānā akṛtopamajjanāḥ svapantya utthāya niśamya niḥsvanaṁ prapāyayantyo ’rbham apohya mātaraḥ
Some mothers, overtaken by joy, left their meals half-eaten; others came out still being anointed with oil, their bath unfinished; some who had been asleep rose at once on hearing the commotion and, setting aside the infants they were nursing, hurried outside.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.41.27)
manāṁsi tāsām aravinda-locanaḥ pragalbha-līlā-hasitāvalokaiḥ jahāra matta-dviradendra-vikramo dṛśāṁ dadac chrī-ramaṇātmanotsavam
With His playful, smiling glances the lotus-eyed Lord stole those women's hearts; walking with the gait of a mighty elephant in rut, He made, through His own beauty — which is the very delight of the goddess of fortune herself — a festival for their eyes.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.41.28)
dṛṣṭvā muhuḥ śrutam anudruta-cetasas taṁ tat-prekṣaṇotsmita-sudhokṣaṇa-labdha-mānāḥ ānanda-mūrtim upaguhya dṛśātma-labdhaṁ hṛṣyat-tvaco jahur anantam arindamādhim
Seeing at last the one of whom they had so often heard, their hearts melted at once; feeling themselves graced by the nectar of His smiling glance, they embraced that form of pure bliss with their very eyes, and with their bodies thrilling, O subduer of foes, forgot their unending sorrow of separation.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.41.29)
prāsāda-śikharārūḍhāḥ prīty-utphulla-mukhāmbujāḥ abhyavarṣan saumanasyaiḥ pramadā bala-keśavau
Climbing to the tops of the mansions, their lotus faces blossoming with affection, those joyful women showered down their good wishes upon Bala and Keshava.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.41.30)
dadhy-akṣataiḥ soda-pātraiḥ srag-gandhair abhyupāyanaiḥ tāv ānarcuḥ pramuditās tatra tatra dvijātayaḥ
There, here and there, brahmanas joyfully honored the two of Them with offerings of yogurt, unbroken rice, filled water pots, garlands, and fragrant substances.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.41.31)
ūcuḥ paurā aho gopyas tapaḥ kim acaran mahat yā hy etāv anupaśyanti nara-loka-mahotsavau
The citizens exclaimed: Ah, what great austerities the gopis must have performed, that they get to behold again and again these two, who are the very festival of every human eye!
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.41.32)
rajakaṁ kañcid āyāntaṁ raṅga-kāraṁ gadāgrajaḥ dṛṣṭvāyācata vāsāṁsi dhautāny aty-uttamāni ca
Seeing a washerman approaching with some clothes, Gadagraja [Krishna] asked him for well-laundered garments of the finest quality.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.41.33)
dehy āvayoḥ samucitāny aṅga vāsāṁsi cārhatoḥ bhaviṣyati paraṁ śreyo dātus te nātra saṁśayaḥ
[Krishna said:] Friend, give us two, who are indeed worthy of them, suitable garments. There is no doubt that whoever gives this gift will attain the highest good.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.41.34)
sa yācito bhagavatā paripūrṇena sarvataḥ sākṣepaṁ ruṣitaḥ prāha bhṛtyo rājñaḥ su-durmadaḥ
Thus asked by Bhagavan, who is complete in every way, that servant of the king, exceedingly insolent, grew angry and answered with scorn.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.41.35)
īdṛśāny eva vāsāṁsī nityaṁ giri-vane-caraḥ paridhatta kim udvṛttā rāja-dravyāṇy abhīpsatha
[The washerman said:] Such garments as these are what one who wanders the hills and forests always wears! Why, you insolent boys, do you covet the king's own property?
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.41.36)
yātāśu bāliśā maivaṁ prārthyaṁ yadi jijīvīṣā badhnanti ghnanti lumpanti dṛptaṁ rāja-kulāni vai
Go away at once, you fools! Do not ask such a thing again if you wish to stay alive; those who grow too bold, the king's men seize, kill, and strip of everything.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.41.37)
evaṁ vikatthamānasya kupito devakī-sutaḥ rajakasya karāgreṇa śiraḥ kāyād apātayat
As he went on boasting in this way, the son of Devaki grew angry, and with the mere tips of His fingers struck the washerman's head from his body.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.41.38)
tasyānujīvinaḥ sarve vāsaḥ-kośān visṛjya vai dudruvuḥ sarvato mārgaṁ vāsāṁsi jagṛhe ’cyutaḥ
All his attendants abandoned their bundles of clothing and fled scattering in every direction along the road; and Achyuta took up the garments.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.41.39)
vasitvātma-priye vastre kṛṣṇaḥ saṅkarṣaṇas tathā śeṣāṇy ādatta gopebhyo visṛjya bhuvi kānicit
Having dressed themselves in whichever pair pleased Them most, Krishna and Sankarshana gave the remaining garments to the cowherd boys, leaving a few scattered on the ground.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.41.40)
tatas tu vāyakaḥ prītas tayor veṣam akalpayat vicitra-varṇaiś caileyair ākalpair anurūpataḥ
Then a weaver, filled with delight, fashioned for the two of Them a fitting attire, adorned with cloth ornaments of many wondrous colors.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.41.41)
nānā-lakṣaṇa-veṣābhyāṁ kṛṣṇa-rāmau virejatuḥ sv-alaṅkṛtau bāla-gajau parvaṇīva sitetarau
In Their distinct and beautiful attire, Krishna and Rama shone forth, finely adorned like a pair of young elephants — one white, one black — decked out for a festival.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.41.42)
tasya prasanno bhagavān prādāt sārūpyam ātmanaḥ śriyaṁ ca paramāṁ loke balaiśvarya-smṛtīndriyam
Pleased with him, Bhagavan granted the weaver, after death, a form like His own — and in this life, the highest fortune, strength, influence, memory and vigor of the senses.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.41.43)
tataḥ sudāmno bhavanaṁ mālā-kārasya jagmatuḥ tau dṛṣṭvā sa samutthāya nanāma śirasā bhuvi
The two of Them then went to the house of Sudama the garland-maker; seeing Them, he rose at once and bowed down, placing his head upon the ground.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.41.44)
tayor āsanam ānīya pādyaṁ cārghyārhaṇādibhiḥ pūjāṁ sānugayoś cakre srak-tāmbūlānulepanaiḥ
Bringing seats for Them, and offering water for the feet, arghya and the like, he worshiped the two of Them, together with Their companions, with garlands, betel leaf and sandal paste.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.41.45)
prāha naḥ sārthakaṁ janma pāvitaṁ ca kulaṁ prabho pitṛ-devarṣayo mahyaṁ tuṣṭā hy āgamanena vām
He said: O Lord, now my birth has become fruitful and my family sanctified; my forefathers, the gods, and the sages are surely satisfied at Your coming.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.41.46)
bhavantau kila viśvasya jagataḥ kāraṇaṁ param avatīrṇāv ihāṁśena kṣemāya ca bhavāya ca
You two are indeed the supreme cause of this universe and this world; You have descended here as a partial manifestation, for its protection and its flourishing.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.41.47)
na hi vāṁ viṣamā dṛṣṭiḥ suhṛdor jagad-ātmanoḥ samayoḥ sarva-bhūteṣu bhajantaṁ bhajator api
For You two, friends and Soul of the universe, there is no partiality among beings — whether they worship You or not, You remain ever the same toward all.
Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.41.48)
tāv ajñāpayataṁ bhṛtyaṁ kim ahaṁ karavāṇi vām puṁso ’ty-anugraho hy eṣa bhavadbhir yan niyujyate
Command me, your servant — what am I to do for You? For to be engaged in service by You is the greatest grace a person can receive.
Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.41.49)
ity abhipretya rājendra sudāmā prīta-mānasaḥ śastaiḥ su-gandhaiḥ kusumair mālā viracitā dadau
O best of kings, understanding his meaning, Sudama, his heart full of affection, offered Them a garland woven of choice, fragrant flowers.
Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.41.50)
tābhiḥ sv-alaṅkṛtau prītau kṛṣṇa-rāmau sahānugau praṇatāya prapannāya dadatur vara-dau varān
Adorned beautifully with those garlands, Krishna and Rama, pleased, together with Their companions, granted boons to Sudama, who bowed before Them in surrender — for They alone are the true givers of every boon.
Verse 51 (bhagavata.10.41.51)
so ’pi vavre ’calāṁ bhaktiṁ tasminn evākhilātmani tad-bhakteṣu ca sauhārdaṁ bhūteṣu ca dayāṁ parām
He, for his part, chose unwavering devotion to that very Soul of all things, friendship for His devotees, and supreme compassion for all beings.
Verse 52 (bhagavata.10.41.52)
iti tasmai varaṁ dattvā śriyaṁ cānvaya-vardhinīm balam āyur yaśaḥ kāntiṁ nirjagāma sahāgrajaḥ
Having thus granted him this boon — together with prosperity that would grow with his lineage, strength, long life, fame and beauty — Krishna departed from there together with His elder brother.
