Skandha 10 · Chapter 56
The Syamantaka Jewel
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.56.1)
śrī-śuka uvāca satrājitaḥ sva-tanayāṁ kṛṣṇāya kṛta-kilbiṣaḥ syamantakena maṇinā svayam udyamya dattavān
Shukadeva Gosvami said: Having committed an offense against Krishna, Satrajit sought to atone by personally coming forward and presenting Him with his own daughter, together with the Syamantaka jewel.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.56.2)
śrī-rājovāca satrājitaḥ kim akarod brahman kṛṣṇasya kilbiṣaḥ syamantakaḥ kutas tasya kasmād dattā sutā hareḥ
The king said: O brahmana, what offense did Satrajit commit against Krishna? Where did the Syamantaka jewel come from, and why was his daughter given to Hari?
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.56.3)
śrī-śuka uvāca āsīt satrājitaḥ sūryo bhaktasya paramaḥ sakhā prītas tasmai maṇiṁ prādāt sa ca tuṣṭaḥ syamantakam
Shukadeva Gosvami said: Surya, the sun-god, was the greatest well-wishing friend of his devotee Satrajit. Pleased with him, the sun-god gave him the jewel named Syamantaka, and Satrajit too was gratified.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.56.4)
sa taṁ bibhran maṇiṁ kaṇṭhe bhrājamāno yathā raviḥ praviṣṭo dvārakāṁ rājan tejasā nopalakṣitaḥ
Wearing that jewel on his neck, shining like the sun, he entered Dvaraka, O King; because of its brilliance he was not recognized.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.56.5)
taṁ vilokya janā dūrāt tejasā muṣṭa-dṛṣṭayaḥ dīvyate ’kṣair bhagavate śaśaṁsuḥ sūrya-śaṅkitāḥ
Seeing him from a distance, the people, their eyes overpowered by his radiance, went and reported to the Lord — who was then engaged in playing dice — that they suspected this was the sun-god himself.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.56.6)
nārāyaṇa namas te ’stu śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-dhara dāmodarāravindākṣa govinda yadu-nandana
[They said:] O Narayana, obeisances to You, bearer of the conch, disc, and mace; O Damodara, lotus-eyed one; O Govinda, delight of the Yadus!
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.56.7)
eṣa āyāti savitā tvāṁ didṛkṣur jagat-pate muṣṇan gabhasti-cakreṇa nṛṇāṁ cakṣūṁṣi tigma-guḥ
Here comes the sun-god, O Lord of the universe, wishing to see You; with the circle of his fierce rays he is stealing away the eyes of men.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.56.8)
nanv anvicchanti te mārgaṁ trī-lokyāṁ vibudharṣabhāḥ jñātvādya gūḍhaṁ yaduṣu draṣṭuṁ tvāṁ yāty ajaḥ prabho
Indeed the foremost of the wise gods in all three worlds seek out Your path; knowing now that You are hidden among the Yadus, O Lord, the unborn sun himself comes to see You.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.56.9)
śrī-śuka uvāca niśamya bāla-vacanaṁ prahasyāmbuja-locanaḥ prāha nāsau ravir devaḥ satrājin maṇinā jvalan
Shukadeva Gosvami said: Hearing these naive words, the lotus-eyed Lord laughed heartily and said, 'This is not the god Ravi — it is Satrajit, glowing because of his jewel.'
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.56.10)
satrājit sva-gṛhaṁ śrīmat kṛta-kautuka-maṅgalam praviśya deva-sadane maṇiṁ viprair nyaveśayat
Satrajit entered his own splendid home, where festive and auspicious rites had been performed, and had learned brahmanas install the jewel in the household shrine.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.56.11)
dine dine svarṇa-bhārān aṣṭau sa sṛjati prabho durbhikṣa-māry-ariṣṭāni sarpādhi-vyādhayo ’śubhāḥ na santi māyinas tatra yatrāste ’bhyarcito maṇiḥ
Every day, O master, it produced eight bharas of gold; and wherever that gem was kept and properly worshiped, there was no famine, no untimely death, no calamity, no snakebite, no mental or physical affliction, and no deceitful person.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.56.12)
sa yācito maṇiṁ kvāpi yadu-rājāya śauriṇā naivārtha-kāmukaḥ prādād yācñā-bhaṅgam atarkayan
Once Krishna asked Satrajit for the jewel, that it be given to the Yadu king [Ugrasena]; but greedy for wealth, he did not give it, not considering that refusal an offense.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.56.13)
tam ekadā maṇiṁ kaṇṭhe pratimucya mahā-prabham praseno hayam āruhya mṛgāyāṁ vyacarad vane
One day, having fastened that greatly effulgent jewel upon his neck, Prasena mounted a horse and rode out into the forest to hunt.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.56.14)
prasenaṁ sa-hayaṁ hatvā maṇim ācchidya keśarī giriṁ viśan jāmbavatā nihato maṇim icchatā
A lion killed Prasena along with his horse and seized the jewel; but as it entered a mountain cave, it was killed by Jambavan, who desired the jewel.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.56.15)
so ’pi cakre kumārasya maṇiṁ krīḍanakaṁ bile apaśyan bhrātaraṁ bhrātā satrājit paryatapyata
Jambavan made the jewel into a plaything for his cub in the cave. Meanwhile Satrajit, not seeing his brother return, became consumed with anguish.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.56.16)
prāyaḥ kṛṣṇena nihato maṇi-grīvo vanaṁ gataḥ bhrātā mameti tac chrutvā karṇe karṇe ’japan janāḥ
'He was probably killed by Krishna and went off to the forest wearing the jewel on his neck — my brother!' Hearing this claim, people began whispering it from ear to ear.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.56.17)
bhagavāṁs tad upaśrutya duryaśo liptam ātmani mārṣṭuṁ prasena-padavīm anvapadyata nāgaraiḥ
Hearing this, the Lord, that ill repute now smeared upon Him, set out with the citizens to trace Prasena's path, in order to wipe away that stain.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.56.18)
hataṁ prasenaṁ aśvaṁ ca vīkṣya keśariṇā vane taṁ cādri-pṛṣṭhe nihatam ṛkṣeṇa dadṛśur janāḥ
The people saw Prasena and his horse lying killed by a lion in the forest, and further on, that same lion lying dead on a mountainside, slain by Riksha [Jambavan].
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.56.19)
ṛkṣa-rāja-bilaṁ bhīmam andhena tamasāvṛtam eko viveśa bhagavān avasthāpya bahiḥ prajāḥ
The Lord alone entered the terrifying cave of the king of bears, wrapped in blinding darkness, stationing His people outside.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.56.20)
tatra dṛṣṭvā maṇi-preṣṭhaṁ bāla-krīḍanakaṁ kṛtam hartuṁ kṛta-matis tasminn avatasthe ’rbhakāntike
There He saw that most precious jewel made into a plaything for a child; resolved to take it, He remained close by the infant.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.56.21)
tam apūrvaṁ naraṁ dṛṣṭvā dhātrī cukrośa bhīta-vat tac chrutvābhyadravat kruddho jāmbavān balināṁ varaḥ
Seeing that never-before-seen person, the nurse cried out in fear; hearing her cry, Jambavan, mightiest among the mighty, rushed forward in fury.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.56.22)
sa vai bhagavatā tena yuyudhe svāmīnātmanaḥ puruṣam prākṛtaṁ matvā kupito nānubhāva-vit
Taking Him for an ordinary man and unaware of His true glory, Jambavan, enraged, fought with that very Lord who was in fact his own master.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.56.23)
dvandva-yuddhaṁ su-tumulam ubhayor vijigīṣatoḥ āyudhāśma-drumair dorbhiḥ kravyārthe śyenayor iva
A most tumultuous single combat ensued between the two, each bent on victory — with weapons, stones and trees, and then with their bare arms — like two hawks fighting over a piece of flesh.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.56.24)
āsīt tad aṣṭā-vimśāham itaretara-muṣṭibhiḥ vajra-niṣpeṣa-paruṣair aviśramam ahar-niśam
That combat went on for twenty-eight days, their fists falling upon one another harsh as the crash of thunderbolts, without rest, day and night.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.56.25)
kṛṣṇa-muṣṭi-viniṣpāta niṣpiṣṭāṅgoru bandhanaḥ kṣīṇa-sattvaḥ svinna-gātras tam āhātīva vismitaḥ
His massive muscles battered by the blows of Krishna's fists, his strength diminished, his limbs drenched in sweat, Jambavan, utterly astonished, addressed Him.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.56.26)
jāne tvāṁ saṛva-bhūtānāṁ prāṇa ojaḥ saho balam viṣṇuṁ purāṇa-puruṣaṁ prabhaviṣṇum adhīśvaram
[Jambavan said:] Now I know You — the life-breath, the strength of sense, mind and body of all beings; You are Vishnu, the primeval Person, the all-powerful Supreme Controller.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.56.27)
tvaṁ hi viśva-sṛjām sraṣṭā sṛṣṭānām api yac ca sat kālaḥ kalayatām īśaḥ para ātmā tathātmanām
You indeed are the creator of all the creators of this universe, and of all that is created You are the very substance; You are Time, the ruler of all who rule, and the Supreme Self of all selves.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.56.28)
yasyeṣad-utkalita-roṣa-kaṭākṣa-mokṣair vartmādiśat kṣubhita-nakra-timiṅgalo ’bdhiḥ setuḥ kṛtaḥ sva-yaśa ujjvalitā ca laṅkā rakṣaḥ-śirāṁsi bhuvi petur iṣu-kṣatāni
It was You whose sidelong glance, only slightly touched with anger, agitated the crocodiles and great sea-monsters and showed the ocean its path; You who built the bridge that blazed Your own fame, who set Lanka ablaze, and by whose arrows the demon's heads were severed and fell to the ground.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.56.29)
iti vijñāta-viijñānam ṛkṣa-rājānam acyutaḥ vyājahāra mahā-rāja bhagavān devakī-sutaḥ
O great King, thus having understood the truth, immortal Krishna spoke to the king of the bears.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.56.30)
abhimṛśyāravindākṣaḥ pāṇinā śaṁ-kareṇa tam kṛpayā parayā bhaktaṁ megha-gambhīrayā girā
The lotus-eyed Lord, the son of Devaki, touched him with His auspicious hand and, with deep compassion, addressed His devotee in a voice as grave as thunder-clouds.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.56.31)
maṇi-hetor iha prāptā vayam ṛkṣa-pate bilam mithyābhiśāpaṁ pramṛjann ātmano maṇināmunā
[The Lord said:] It is for this jewel, O lord of the bears, that We have come here to your cave, so as to clear away the false accusation made against Myself.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.56.32)
ity uktaḥ svāṁ duhitaraṁ kanyāṁ jāmbavatīṁ mudā arhaṇārtham sa maṇinā kṛṣṇāyopajahāra ha
Thus addressed, Jambavan joyfully offered his maiden daughter Jambavati, together with the jewel, to Krishna as a mark of honor.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.56.33)
adṛṣṭvā nirgamaṁ śaureḥ praviṣṭasya bilaṁ janāḥ pratīkṣya dvādaśāhāni duḥkhitāḥ sva-puraṁ yayuḥ
Not seeing Lord Shauri emerge from the cave he had entered, the people waited twelve days and then, grief-stricken, returned to their own city.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.56.34)
niśamya devakī devī rakmiṇy ānakadundubhiḥ suhṛdo jñātayo ’śocan bilāt kṛṣṇam anirgatam
Hearing that Krishna had not come out of the cave, Devaki, the divine Rukmini, Vasudeva, and His friends and kinsmen grieved.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.56.35)
satrājitaṁ śapantas te duḥkhitā dvārakaukasaḥ upatasthuś candrabhāgāṁ durgāṁ kṛṣṇopalabdhaye
Cursing Satrajit, the grieving residents of Dvaraka approached the deity Durga, called Chandrabhaga, to seek Krishna's recovery.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.56.36)
teṣāṁ tu devy-upasthānāt pratyādiṣṭāśiṣā sa ca prādurbabhūva siddhārthaḥ sa-dāro harṣayan hariḥ
In response to their worship of the goddess, and after she granted them her blessing, Hari appeared, His purpose accomplished, together with His wife, bringing them joy.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.56.37)
upalabhya hṛṣīkeśaṁ mṛtaṁ punar ivāgatam saha patnyā maṇi-grīvaṁ sarve jāta-mahotsavāḥ
Recognizing Hrishikesha, who had returned as if from death, together with His wife and wearing the jewel on His neck, everyone broke into great celebration.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.56.38)
satrājitaṁ samāhūya sabhāyāṁ rāja-sannidhau prāptiṁ cākhyāya bhagavān maṇiṁ tasmai nyavedayat
The Lord summoned Satrajit into the assembly, in the presence of the king, announced how the jewel had been recovered, and then handed it over to him.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.56.39)
sa cāti-vrīḍito ratnaṁ gṛhītvāvāṅ-mukhas tataḥ anutapyamāno bhavanam agamat svena pāpmanā
Deeply ashamed, he took the jewel with his face bowed down, and went home repenting his own sinful conduct.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.56.40)
so ’nudhyāyaṁs tad evāghaṁ balavad-vigrahākulaḥ kathaṁ mṛjāmy ātma-rajaḥ prasīded vācyutaḥ katham
Brooding over that very offense, troubled at the thought of conflict with the mighty, he thought: 'How shall I wash away this stain upon myself? How may Achyuta be pleased with me?'
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.56.41)
kim kṛtvā sādhu mahyaṁ syān na śaped vā jano yathā adīrgha-darśanaṁ kṣudraṁ mūḍhaṁ draviṇa-lolupam
'What should I do that would be good for me, so people would not curse me as short-sighted, mean, foolish, and greedy for wealth?'
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.56.42)
dāsye duhitaraṁ tasmai strī-ratnaṁ ratnam eva ca upāyo ’yaṁ samīcīnas tasya śāntir na cānyathā
'I shall give him my daughter, the very jewel among women, and this jewel besides — this alone is the fitting means; there is no pacifying him otherwise.'
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.56.43)
evaṁ vyavasito buddhyā satrājit sva-sutāṁ śubhām maṇiṁ ca svayam udyamya kṛṣṇāyopajahāra ha
Having thus resolved with firm intelligence, Satrajit himself made the effort and presented his auspicious daughter, together with the jewel, to Krishna.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.56.44)
tāṁ satyabhāmāṁ bhagavān upayeme yathā-vidhi bahubhir yācitāṁ śīla- rūpaudārya-guṇānvitām
The Lord married Satyabhama according to proper rites — she who was sought after by many suitors, endowed with fine character, beauty, generosity and every good quality.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.56.45)
bhagavān āha na maṇiṁ pratīcchāmo vayaṁ nṛpa tavāstāṁ deva-bhaktasya vayaṁ ca phala-bhāginaḥ
The Lord said: 'We do not wish to take back the jewel, O King; let it remain with you, the sun-god's devotee. We too shall thus share in its fruits.'
