Lord Kṛṣṇa Fights with Bāṇāsura
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.63.1)
śṛī-śuka uvāca apaśyatāṁ cāniruddhaṁ tad-bandhūnāṁ ca bhārata catvāro vārṣikā māsā vyatīyur anuśocatām
Shukadeva Gosvami said: O descendant of Bharata, as Aniruddha's relatives failed to see Him return, the four months of the rainy season passed while they continued to grieve.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.63.2)
nāradāt tad upākarṇya vārtāṁ baddhasya karma ca prayayuḥ śoṇita-puraṁ vṛṣṇayaḥ kṛṣṇa-daivatāḥ
Hearing from Narada the news of what had happened and of Aniruddha's capture, the Vrishnis, who held Krishna as their very deity, set out for Shonitapura.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.63.3)
pradyumno yuyudhānaś ca gadaḥ sāmbo ’tha sāraṇaḥ nandopananda-bhadrādyā rāma-kṛṣṇānuvartinaḥ
Following Balarama and Krishna went Pradyumna, Yuyudhana, Gada, Samba and Sarana, along with Nanda, Upananda, Bhadra and others.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.63.4)
akṣauhiṇībhir dvādaśabhiḥ sametāḥ sarvato diśam rurudhur bāṇa-nagaraṁ samantāt sātvatarṣabhāḥ
Assembled with twelve akshauhini divisions of troops, those foremost heroes of the Satvata race surrounded Banasura's city from every side and laid siege to it.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.63.5)
bhajyamāna-purodyāna- prākārāṭṭāla-gopuram prekṣamāṇo ruṣāviṣṭas tulya-sainyo ’bhiniryayau
Seeing his city's gardens, ramparts, watchtowers and gateways being smashed, Bana, filled with fury, marched out to meet them with an army of equal size.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.63.6)
bāṇārthe bhagavān rudraḥ sa-sutaḥ pramathair vṛtaḥ āruhya nandi-vṛṣabhaṁ yuyudhe rāma-kṛṣṇayoḥ
For Bana's sake, Bhagavan Rudra, accompanied by his son and surrounded by the Pramathas, mounted his bull Nandi and fought against Balarama and Krishna.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.63.7)
āsīt su-tumulaṁ yuddham adbhutaṁ roma-harṣaṇam kṛṣṇa-śaṅkarayo rājan pradyumna-guhayor api
O King, a tremendously tumultuous, wondrous and hair-raising battle then ensued — between Krishna and Shankara, and likewise between Pradyumna and Guha, Kartikeya.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.63.8)
kumbhāṇḍa-kūpakarṇābhyāṁ balena saha saṁyugaḥ sāmbasya bāṇa-putreṇa bāṇena saha sātyakeḥ
Balarama fought against Kumbhanda and Kupakarna, Samba fought Bana's son, and Satyaki fought Bana himself.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.63.9)
brahmādayaḥ surādhīśā munayaḥ siddha-cāraṇāḥ gandharvāpsaraso yakṣā vimānair draṣṭum āgaman
Brahma and the other rulers among the gods, the sages, Siddhas and Charanas, and the Gandharvas, Apsaras and Yakshas — all came in their celestial vehicles to witness the battle.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.63.10)
śaṅkarānucarān śaurir bhūta-pramatha-guhyakān ḍākinīr yātudhānāṁś ca vetālān sa-vināyakān
Krishna drove back Shankara's followers — the Bhutas, Pramathas and Guhyakas, the Dakinis, Yatudhanas, Vetalas, and the attendants of Vinayaka.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.63.11)
preta-mātṛ-piśācāṁś ca kuṣmāṇḍān brahma-rākṣasān drāvayām āsa tīkṣṇāgraiḥ śaraiḥ śārṅga-dhanuś-cyutaiḥ
And with the sharp arrows released from His bow Sharnga, He likewise routed the Pretas, Matas, Pishachas, Kushmandas and Brahma-rakshasas.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.63.12)
pṛthag-vidhāni prāyuṅkta piṇāky astrāṇi śārṅgiṇe praty-astraiḥ śamayām āsa śārṅga-pāṇir avismitaḥ
Shiva, wielder of the trident, hurled many different weapons at Krishna, wielder of Sharnga — but Krishna, unperturbed, neutralized every one of them with the appropriate counter-weapons.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.63.13)
brahmāstrasya ca brahmāstraṁ vāyavyasya ca pārvatam āgneyasya ca pārjanyaṁ naijaṁ pāśupatasya ca
A brahma-weapon He met with a brahma-weapon, a wind-weapon with a mountain-weapon, a fire-weapon with a rain-weapon, and Shiva's own pashupata-weapon with His own personal weapon.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.63.14)
mohayitvā tu giriśaṁ jṛmbhaṇāstreṇa jṛmbhitam bāṇasya pṛtanāṁ śaurir jaghānāsi-gadeṣubhiḥ
Having bewildered Girisha with the yawning-weapon and made him yawn helplessly, Krishna then fell upon Bana's army, striking it down with sword, club and arrows.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.63.15)
skandaḥ pradyumna-bāṇaughair ardyamānaḥ samantataḥ asṛg vimuñcan gātrebhyaḥ śikhināpakramad raṇāt
Skanda, Kartikeya, tormented on all sides by the flood of Pradyumna's arrows, fled the battlefield on his peacock, blood streaming from his limbs.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.63.16)
kumbhāṇḍa-kūpakarṇaś ca petatur muṣalārditau dudruvus tad-anīkani hata-nāthāni sarvataḥ
Kumbhanda and Kupakarna, struck down by Balarama's mace, fell dead. Their soldiers, now leaderless, scattered and fled in all directions.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.63.17)
viśīryamāṇam sva-balaṁ dṛṣṭvā bāṇo ’ty-amarṣitaḥ kṛṣṇam abhyadravat saṅkhye rathī hitvaiva sātyakim
Seeing his own army being torn to pieces, Bana, extremely enraged, abandoned his fight with Satyaki and charged at Krishna on his chariot in that battle.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.63.18)
dhanūṁṣy ākṛṣya yugapad bāṇaḥ pañca-śatāni vai ekaikasmin śarau dvau dvau sandadhe raṇa-durmadaḥ
Wild with the fury of battle, Bana drew all five hundred of his bows at once, fixing two arrows on each string.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.63.19)
tāni ciccheda bhagavān dhanūṁsi yugapad dhariḥ sārathiṁ ratham aśvāṁś ca hatvā śaṅkham apūrayat
Bhagavan Hari shattered all those bows simultaneously, and, having also struck down Bana's charioteer, chariot and horses, He sounded His conch.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.63.20)
tan-mātā koṭarā nāma nagnā makta-śiroruhā puro ’vatasthe kṛṣṇasya putra-prāṇa-rirakṣayā
At that moment Bana's mother, named Kotara, wishing to save her son's life, stood naked before Krishna with her hair let loose.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.63.21)
tatas tiryaṅ-mukho nagnām anirīkṣan gadāgrajaḥ bāṇaś ca tāvad virathaś chinna-dhanvāviśat puram
Krishna, elder brother of Gada, turned His face aside so as not to look upon the naked woman, and Bana, his chariot destroyed and his bow broken, took that chance to flee into his city.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.63.22)
vidrāvite bhūta-gaṇe jvaras tu trī-śirās trī-pāt abhyadhāvata dāśārhaṁ dahann iva diśo daśa
With Shiva's ghostly hosts thus driven off, the Shiva-fever, having three heads and three feet, rushed at Krishna, seeming to set all ten directions ablaze as he came.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.63.23)
atha nārāyaṇaḥ devaḥ taṁ dṛṣṭvā vyasṛjaj jvaram māheśvaro vaiṣṇavaś ca yuyudhāte jvarāv ubhau
Seeing him approach, Bhagavan Narayana then released His own fever weapon. Thus the Shiva-fever and the Vishnu-fever, both of them, fought against each other.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.63.24)
māheśvaraḥ samākrandan vaiṣṇavena balārditaḥ alabdhvābhayam anyatra bhīto māheśvaro jvaraḥ śaraṇārthī hṛṣīkeśaṁ tuṣṭāva prayatāñjaliḥ
Overpowered by the strength of the Vishnu-fever, the Shiva-fever cried out in anguish. Finding no refuge anywhere else, the terrified Shiva-fever, seeking shelter, approached Hrishikesha with folded hands and began to praise Him.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.63.25)
jvara uvāca namāmi tvānanta-śaktiṁ pareśam sarvātmānaṁ kevalaṁ jñapti-mātram viśvotpatti-sthāna-saṁrodha-hetuṁ yat tad brahma brahma-liṅgam praśāntam
The fever said: I bow to You, of unlimited power, the Supreme Lord, the Self of all beings, pure consciousness itself — the cause of the universe's creation, maintenance and dissolution, the perfectly peaceful Absolute Truth indicated by all the Vedas.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.63.26)
kālo daivaṁ karma jīvaḥ svabhāvo dravyaṁ kṣetraṁ prāṇa ātmā vikāraḥ tat-saṅghāto bīja-roha-pravāhas tvan-māyaiṣā tan-niṣedhaṁ prapadye
Time, fate, karma, the individual soul and his nature, matter, the field of the body, the life-breath, the false self and its transformations, and the aggregate of all these flowing on endlessly like seed and sprout — all this is Your illusory energy, maya. I take refuge in You, the negation of that maya.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.63.27)
nānā-bhāvair līlayaivopapannair devān sādhūn loka-setūn bibharṣi haṁsy unmārgān hiṁsayā vartamānān janmaitat te bhāra-hārāya bhūmeḥ
Through Your pastimes, assuming various dispositions, You sustain the gods, the saintly, and the moral order of the world, while You destroy those who live by violence, straying from the right path. This present birth of Yours is meant to relieve the earth of her burden.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.63.28)
tapto ’ham te tejasā duḥsahena śāntogreṇāty-ulbaṇena jvareṇa tāvat tāpo dehināṁ te ’nghri-mūlaṁ no severan yāvad āśānubaddhāḥ
I am scorched by Your unbearable power, in the form of this fever that is at once cold and fierce, mild and extreme. Embodied souls suffer such torment only so long as they remain bound by worldly hopes and fail to serve the root of Your feet.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.63.29)
The Supreme Lord said: O three-headed one, I am pleased with you. Let your fear of My fever be gone, and let whoever remembers this conversation between us never have cause to fear you.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.63.30)
ity ukto ’cyutam ānamya gato māheśvaro jvaraḥ bāṇas tu ratham ārūḍhaḥ prāgād yotsyan janārdanam
Thus addressed, the Shiva-fever bowed to the infallible Lord and departed. Bana, meanwhile, mounted his chariot once more and advanced to fight Janardana.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.63.31)
tato bāhu-sahasreṇa nānāyudha-dharo ’suraḥ mumoca parama-kruddho bāṇāṁś cakrāyudhe nṛpa
O King, then that demon, wielding many kinds of weapons in his thousand arms, in the extremity of his rage let fly his arrows at Krishna, the wielder of the discus.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.63.32)
tasyāsyato ’strāṇy asakṛc cakreṇa kṣura-neminā ciccheda bhagavān bāhūn śākhā iva vanaspateḥ
As Bana went on hurling his weapons, the Supreme Lord, with His razor-rimmed discus, again and again severed the demon's arms, as though lopping the branches from a tree.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.63.33)
bāhuṣu chidyamāneṣu bāṇasya bhagavān bhavaḥ bhaktānakampy upavrajya cakrāyudham abhāṣata
As Bana's arms were being severed one by one, Bhagavan Shiva, moved with compassion for his devotee, approached the wielder of the discus and spoke to Him.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.63.34)
śrī-rudra uvāca tvaṁ hi brahma paraṁ jyotir gūḍhaṁ brahmaṇi vāṅ-maye yaṁ paśyanty amalātmāna ākāśam iva kevalam
Shri Rudra said: You alone are the supreme Brahman, the light hidden within the word-manifest Veda — whom those of stainless heart behold as pure and unmixed, like the open sky.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.63.35)
nābhir nabho ’gnir mukham ambu reto dyauḥ śīrṣam āśāḥ śrutir aṅghrir urvī candro mano yasya dṛg arka ātmā ahaṁ samudro jaṭharaṁ bhujendraḥ
The sky is Your navel, fire Your mouth, water Your semen, and heaven Your head. The directions are Your hearing, the earth Your foot, the moon Your mind, and the sun Your eye. I am Your ego; the ocean is Your belly, and Indra Your arm.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.63.36)
romāṇi yasyauṣadhayo ’mbu-vāhāḥ keśā viriñco dhiṣaṇā visargaḥ prajā-patir hṛdayaṁ yasya dharmaḥ sa vai bhavān puruṣo loka-kalpaḥ
Herbs and plants are Your bodily hairs, and the water-bearing clouds the hair of Your head; Brahma is Your intellect, and creation Your generative power. Prajapati is Your heart, and dharma Your very nature — such indeed are You, the Supreme Person, the fashioner of all the worlds.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.63.37)
tavāvatāro ’yam akuṇṭha-dhāman dharmasya guptyai jagato hitāya vayaṁ ca sarve bhavatānubhāvitā vibhāvayāmo bhuvanāni sapta
This descent of Yours, O Lord of boundless glory, is for the protection of dharma and for the welfare of the world. We demigods too, empowered entirely by You, sustain the seven planetary systems.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.63.38)
tvam eka ādyaḥ puruṣo ’dvitīyas turyaḥ sva-dṛg dhetur ahetur īśaḥ pratīyase ’thāpi yathā-vikāraṁ sva-māyayā sarva-guṇa-prasiddhyai
You alone are the primeval Person, without a second, the fourth beyond the three states, self-revealing, uncaused cause, the supreme controller. Yet You appear to undergo transformation through Your own maya, so that all material qualities may be fully manifested.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.63.39)
yathaiva sūryaḥ pihitaś chāyayā svayā chāyāṁ ca rūpāṇi ca sañcakāsti evaṁ guṇenāpihito guṇāṁs tvam ātma-pradīpo guṇinaś ca bhūman
O almighty one, just as the sun, though veiled by its own cloud, still illumines that cloud and all other forms, so You, though veiled by the material qualities, remain self-luminous and reveal both those qualities and the beings who possess them.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.63.40)
yan-māyā-mohita-dhiyaḥ putra-dāra-gṛhādiṣu unmajjanti nimajjanti prasaktā vṛjinārṇave
Their minds bewildered by Your maya and attached to children, wife, home and the like, they rise and sink again and again, immersed in the ocean of worldly misery.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.63.41)
deva-dattam imaṁ labdhvā nṛ-lokam ajitendriyaḥ yo nādriyeta tvat-pādau sa śocyo hy ātma-vañcakaḥ
One who obtains this human birth, a gift from the gods, yet does not conquer his senses or honor Your feet — he is truly pitiable, for he only deceives himself.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.63.42)
yas tvāṁ visṛjate martya ātmānaṁ priyam īśvaram viparyayendriyārthārthaṁ viṣam atty amṛtaṁ tyajan
That mortal who abandons You — his own true Self, his dearest friend, his Lord — for the sake of sense objects, which are the very opposite of You in nature, forsakes nectar and swallows poison instead.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.63.43)
ahaṁ brahmātha vibudhā munayaś cāmalāśayāḥ sarvātmanā prapannās tvām ātmānaṁ preṣṭham īśvaram
I, Brahma, the other gods, and the sages of purified heart — all of us have surrendered wholly unto You, our own Self, our dearest one, our Lord.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.63.44)
taṁ tvā jagat-sthity-udayānta-hetuṁ samaṁ prasāntaṁ suhṛd-ātma-daivam ananyam ekaṁ jagad-ātma-ketaṁ bhavāpavargāya bhajāma devam
We worship You, the Lord, the cause of the world's origin, maintenance and dissolution, ever equanimous and perfectly at peace, our true friend, our own Self, our worshipable deity — the one without a second, the shelter of the universe and of all souls — so that we may be freed from material existence.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.63.45)
ayaṁ mameṣṭo dayito ’nuvartī mayābhayaṁ dattam amuṣya deva sampādyatāṁ tad bhavataḥ prasādo yathā hi te daitya-patau prasādaḥ
This Bana is dear to me, my beloved and faithful follower, and I have granted him freedom from fear. My Lord, let Your grace now be bestowed upon him, just as You once showed grace to the lord of the daityas, Prahlada.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.63.46)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca yad āttha bhagavaṁs tvaṁ naḥ karavāma priyaṁ tava bhavato yad vyavasitaṁ tan me sādhv anumoditam
The Supreme Lord said: My lord, whatever you have asked, We shall surely do for your pleasure. I fully approve of what you have decided.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.63.47)
avadhyo ’yaṁ mamāpy eṣa vairocani-suto ’suraḥ prahrādāya varo datto na vadhyo me tavānvayaḥ
This demon too, son of Vairochani, is not to be slain by Me — for I gave Prahlada the boon that no descendant of his would ever be killed by Me.
Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.63.48)
darpopaśamanāyāsya pravṛkṇā bāhavo mayā sūditaṁ ca balaṁ bhūri yac ca bhārāyitaṁ bhuvaḥ
It was only to subdue his pride that I cut off his arms, and I destroyed his vast army because it had become a burden to the earth.
Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.63.49)
catvāro ’sya bhujāḥ śiṣṭā bhaviṣyaty ajarāmaraḥ pārṣada-mukhyo bhavato na kutaścid-bhayo ’suraḥ
Four of his arms shall remain, and he will become free from old age and death. He will be one of your principal attendants, and this demon shall have nothing to fear from any quarter.
Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.63.50)
iti labdhvābhayaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ praṇamya śirasāsuraḥ prādyumniṁ ratham āropya sa-vadhvo samupānayat
Thus granted freedom from fear, the demon bowed his head to Krishna, and then, seating Pradyumna's son together with his bride upon a chariot, he brought them before the Lord.
Verse 51 (bhagavata.10.63.51)
akṣauhiṇyā parivṛtaṁ su-vāsaḥ-samalaṅkṛtam sa-patnīkaṁ puras-kṛtya yayau rudrānumoditaḥ
Placing Aniruddha and His bride, both beautifully attired and adorned, at the head of the procession and surrounded by a full division of troops, Krishna took leave of Rudra and set out.
Verse 52 (bhagavata.10.63.52)
sva-rājadhānīṁ samalaṅkṛtāṁ dhvajaiḥ sa-toraṇair ukṣita-mārga-catvarām viveśa śaṅkhānaka-dundubhi-svanair abhyudyataḥ paura-suhṛd-dvijātibhiḥ
The Lord then entered His own capital, adorned with flags and festooned arches, its roads and squares freshly sprinkled with water — welcomed by the sounding of conches, anakas and dundubhi drums, and by His kinsmen, the citizens and the brahmanas who came forward joyfully to greet Him.
Verse 53 (bhagavata.10.63.53)
Whoever rises at dawn and remembers this victory of Krishna in His battle with Shankara will never suffer defeat.
