Skandha 10 · Chapter 8

Krishna's Name-Giving and the Universal Form in His Mouth

Chapter 7All chaptersChapter 9

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.8.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca gargaḥ purohito rājan yadūnāṁ sumahā-tapāḥ vrajaṁ jagāma nandasya vasudeva-pracoditaḥ

Shri Shuka said: O King, Garga, the priest of the Yadu dynasty, a man of the greatest austerity, went to Nanda's Vraja, sent there by Vasudeva.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.8.2)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā parama-prītaḥ pratyutthāya kṛtāñjaliḥ ānarcādhokṣaja-dhiyā praṇipāta-puraḥsaram

Seeing him, Nanda, filled with joy, rose with folded hands, and regarding him as none other than Adhokshaja himself, first bowed low and then worshiped him.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.8.3)

sūpaviṣṭaṁ kṛtātithyaṁ girā sūnṛtayā munim nandayitvābravīd brahman pūrṇasya karavāma kim

Once the sage was comfortably seated and properly received as a guest, Nanda, pleasing him with gentle words, said: O brahmana, what service can we render to one who already lacks nothing?

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.8.4)

mahad-vicalanaṁ nṝṇāṁ gṛhiṇāṁ dīna-cetasām niḥśreyasāya bhagavan kalpate nānyathā kvacit

O revered one, the travels of great souls from place to place serve only the ultimate welfare of poor-hearted householders like us — never any purpose of their own.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.8.5)

jyotiṣām ayanaṁ sākṣād yat taj jñānam atīndriyam praṇītaṁ bhavatā yena pumān veda parāvaram

That direct, transcendent knowledge of the movements of the heavenly bodies which you yourself have set forth, by which a person may know both what is higher and what is lower —

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.8.6)

tvaṁ hi brahma-vidāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ saṁskārān kartum arhasi bālayor anayor nṝṇāṁ janmanā brāhmaṇo guruḥ

— it is because of this that you stand foremost among the knowers of Brahman, and so it is you who should rightly perform the purificatory rites for these two sons of mine; for a brahmana, simply by birth, is the natural guru of all people.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.8.7)

śrī-garga uvāca yadūnām aham ācāryaḥ khyātaś ca bhuvi sarvadā sutaṁ mayā saṁskṛtaṁ te manyate devakī-sutam

Shri Garga said: I am known throughout the world as the family priest of the Yadu dynasty. If I perform this rite for your son, people will take Him to be the son of Devaki.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.8.8)

kaṁsaḥ pāpa-matiḥ sakhyaṁ tava cānakadundubheḥ devakyā aṣṭamo garbho na strī bhavitum arhati

Kamsa is a man of evil intent; knowing your friendship with Anakadundubhi, and knowing that Devaki's eighth pregnancy could not rightly have produced a daughter —

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.8.9)

iti sañcintayañ chrutvā devakyā dārikā-vacaḥ api hantā gatāśaṅkas tarhi tan no ’nayo bhavet

— and remembering the words spoken by Devaki's daughter, weighing it all together, his doubts resolved, he might himself come here to kill the child; and that would bring great calamity upon us.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.8.10)

śrī-nanda uvāca alakṣito ’smin rahasi māmakair api go-vraje kuru dvijāti-saṁskāraṁ svasti-vācana-pūrvakam

Shri Nanda said: Then perform the sacred-thread rite here in secret, in this cow-pen, unseen even by my own household, beginning first with the auspicious blessing.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.8.11)

śrī-śuka uvāca evaṁ samprārthito vipraḥ sva-cikīrṣitam eva tat cakāra nāma-karaṇaṁ gūḍho rahasi bālayoḥ

Shri Shuka said: Thus requested — and doing exactly what he had wished to do all along — the brahmana secretly performed the name-giving ceremony for the two boys in a private place.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.8.12)

śrī-garga uvāca ayaṁ hi rohiṇī-putro ramayan suhṛdo guṇaiḥ ākhyāsyate rāma iti balādhikyād balaṁ viduḥ yadūnām apṛthag-bhāvāt saṅkarṣaṇam uśanty api

Shri Garga said: This son of Rohini, delighting His well-wishers by His virtues, will be called Rama; because of His surpassing strength He will be known as Bala; and since He unites two families as though they were one, He will also be called Sankarshana.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.8.13)

āsan varṇās trayo hy asya gṛhṇato ’nuyugaṁ tanūḥ śuklo raktas tathā pīta idānīṁ kṛṣṇatāṁ gataḥ

And this other child, taking a body in each successive age, has been white, then red, and then yellow in color — and now He has taken on a dark hue.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.8.14)

prāg ayaṁ vasudevasya kvacij jātas tavātmajaḥ vāsudeva iti śrīmān abhijñāḥ sampracakṣate

This resplendent son of yours has, on an earlier occasion, already been born as the son of Vasudeva; and for this reason, those who know call Him Vasudeva.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.8.15)

bahūni santi nāmāni rūpāṇi ca sutasya te guṇa-karmānurūpāṇi tāny ahaṁ veda no janāḥ

This son of yours has countless names and forms, each fitting His qualities and His deeds; I know them, though ordinary people do not.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.8.16)

eṣa vaḥ śreya ādhāsyad gopa-gokula-nandanaḥ anena sarva-durgāṇi yūyam añjas tariṣyatha

This child, the delight of the cowherds of Gokula, will bring welfare upon you all; through Him, you will pass easily beyond every calamity.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.8.17)

purānena vraja-pate sādhavo dasyu-pīḍitāḥ arājake rakṣyamāṇā jigyur dasyūn samedhitāḥ

O lord of Vraja, in ages past, when wicked men oppressed the good in a time without rightful rule, this very one protected them, brought them to prosperity, and gave them victory over those thieves.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.8.18)

ya etasmin mahā-bhāgāḥ prītiṁ kurvanti mānavāḥ nārayo ’bhibhavanty etān viṣṇu-pakṣān ivāsurāḥ

Those most fortunate people who bear love for Him can never be overcome by any enemy — just as demons can never overcome those who stand on the side of Vishnu.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.8.19)

Therefore, O Nanda, this son of yours is equal to Narayana Himself in His virtues, His splendor, His fame, and His power; guard Him, then, with full and unwavering care.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.8.20)

śrī-śuka uvāca ity ātmānaṁ samādiśya garge ca sva-gṛhaṁ gate nandaḥ pramudito mene ātmānaṁ pūrṇam āśiṣām

Shri Shuka said: Having given this counsel, Garga returned to his own home, and Nanda, filled with delight, considered himself now blessed with everything good.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.8.21)

kālena vrajatālpena gokule rāma-keśavau jānubhyāṁ saha pāṇibhyāṁ riṅgamāṇau vijahratuḥ

As a little time passed, Rama and Keshava began to play about Gokula, crawling on their hands and knees.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.8.22)

tāv aṅghri-yugmam anukṛṣya sarīsṛpantau ghoṣa-praghoṣa-ruciraṁ vraja-kardameṣu tan-nāda-hṛṣṭa-manasāv anusṛtya lokaṁ mugdha-prabhītavad upeyatur anti mātroḥ

Dragging Their little legs as They crawled through the mud of Vraja, delighted by the sweet jingling of the anklets on Their own feet, the two would follow after that very sound toward whoever else it belonged to — and then, as if startled to find their mistake, hurry back close to their own mothers.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.8.23)

tan-mātarau nija-sutau ghṛṇayā snuvantyau paṅkāṅga-rāga-rucirāv upagṛhya dorbhyām dattvā stanaṁ prapibatoḥ sma mukhaṁ nirīkṣya mugdha-smitālpa-daśanaṁ yayatuḥ pramodam

Their two mothers, their breasts flowing with tenderness, would gather their sons — made lovelier still by the mud smeared upon Their bodies — into their arms; and giving Them the breast, they would gaze at Their faces as They drank, delighting in the innocent smiles that revealed Their tiny teeth.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.8.24)

yarhy aṅganā-darśanīya-kumāra-līlāv antar-vraje tad abalāḥ pragṛhīta-pucchaiḥ vatsair itas tata ubhāv anukṛṣyamāṇau prekṣantya ujjhita-gṛhā jahṛṣur hasantyaḥ

When, within Nanda's house, the two boys, gripping the calves' tails, would be dragged here and there by them — a sight truly worth seeing — the housewives would leave their chores and laugh with delight at this play.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.8.25)

śṛṅgy-agni-daṁṣṭry-asi-jala-dvija-kaṇṭakebhyaḥ krīḍā-parāv aticalau sva-sutau niṣeddhum gṛhyāṇi kartum api yatra na taj-jananyau śekāta āpatur alaṁ manaso ’navasthām

Ever trying to guard their restless, playful sons from horned cows, fire, fanged creatures, blades, water, birds, and thorns, the two mothers could barely attend to their household duties at all; their minds fell into constant, unrelenting unease.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.8.26)

kālenālpena rājarṣe rāmaḥ kṛṣṇaś ca gokule aghṛṣṭa-jānubhiḥ padbhir vicakramatur añjasā

O royal sage, in a short time Rama and Krishna, there in Gokula, began to walk easily on Their own two feet, no longer needing to drag Their knees along the ground.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.8.27)

tatas tu bhagavān kṛṣṇo vayasyair vraja-bālakaiḥ saha-rāmo vraja-strīṇāṁ cikrīḍe janayan mudam

Thereafter, Bhagavan Krishna, together with Rama, began to play with the other boys of Vraja, His own age-mates, filling the women of Vraja with delight.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.8.28)

kṛṣṇasya gopyo ruciraṁ vīkṣya kaumāra-cāpalam śṛṇvantyāḥ kila tan-mātur iti hocuḥ samāgatāḥ

Seeing Krishna's charming childish mischief, the gopis would gather together, eager to let His mother hear of it once more, and would speak to her as follows.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.8.29)

vatsān muñcan kvacid asamaye krośa-sañjāta-hāsaḥ steyaṁ svādv atty atha dadhi-payaḥ kalpitaiḥ steya-yogaiḥ markān bhokṣyan vibhajati sa cen nātti bhāṇḍaṁ bhinnatti dravyālābhe sagṛha-kupito yāty upakrośya tokān

"Sometimes He lets the calves loose before it is time, and when scolded for it He only laughs. Then, by some clever trick, He steals sweet curd and milk and eats and drinks His fill. He shares it with the monkeys, and if a monkey won't take any more, He breaks the pot outright. And if He finds nothing worth stealing in a house, He grows angry with its people and, pinching the little children until they cry, simply walks away."

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.8.30)

hastāgrāhye racayati vidhiṁ pīṭhakolūkhalādyaiś chidraṁ hy antar-nihita-vayunaḥ śikya-bhāṇḍeṣu tad-vit dhvāntāgāre dhṛta-maṇi-gaṇaṁ svāṅgam artha-pradīpaṁ kāle gopyo yarhi gṛha-kṛtyeṣu suvyagra-cittāḥ

"When the pots hang beyond His reach, He devises some scheme with stools and an upturned mortar to climb up to them; and knowing exactly what each pot contains, He pokes a hole straight through it. And whenever we gopis are absorbed in our housework, He slips into the darkened storeroom, using the very jewels on His own body as a lamp to see by."

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.8.31)

evaṁ dhārṣṭyāny uśati kurute mehanādīni vāstau steyopāyair viracita-kṛtiḥ supratīko yathāste itthaṁ strībhiḥ sa-bhaya-nayana-śrī-mukhālokinībhir vyākhyātārthā prahasita-mukhī na hy upālabdhum aicchat

"And when we scold Him for it, He grows bolder still — He has even relieved Himself right in our clean rooms, this expert in every kind of mischief — and yet see how innocent He sits before you now!" So the gopis, their eyes lingering nervously yet fondly on His beautiful face, would report all this to Yashoda; and she, hearing it, would merely smile, never truly wishing to scold her most blessed child.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.8.32)

ekadā krīḍamānās te rāmādyā gopa-dārakāḥ kṛṣṇo mṛdaṁ bhakṣitavān iti mātre nyavedayan

One day, while at play, Rama and the other cowherd boys went to His mother and told her: "Krishna has eaten dirt!"

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.8.33)

sā gṛhītvā kare kṛṣṇam upālabhya hitaiṣiṇī yaśodā bhaya-sambhrānta- prekṣaṇākṣam abhāṣata

Yashoda, ever devoted to His well-being, took hold of Krishna's hand, and, her eyes wide with anxious fear, prepared to scold Him, saying this.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.8.34)

kasmān mṛdam adāntātman bhavān bhakṣitavān rahaḥ vadanti tāvakā hy ete kumārās te ’grajo ’py ayam

"O restless child, why have You secretly eaten dirt? Your own playmates say so — and so does Your very own elder brother here."

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.8.35)

nāhaṁ bhakṣitavān amba sarve mithyābhiśaṁsinaḥ yadi satya-giras tarhi samakṣaṁ paśya me mukham

"Mother, I have not eaten anything; they are all making a false accusation. If you believe their words to be true, then look for yourself, right now, into My mouth."

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.8.36)

yady evaṁ tarhi vyādehī- ty uktaḥ sa bhagavān hariḥ vyādattāvyāhataiśvaryaḥ krīḍā-manuja-bālakaḥ

"If that is so, then open Your mouth" — so told, Bhagavan Hari, playing the part of a human child, His majesty never truly diminished even in this game, opened His mouth wide.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.8.37)

sā tatra dadṛśe viśvaṁ jagat sthāsnu ca khaṁ diśaḥ sādri-dvīpābdhi-bhūgolaṁ sa-vāyv-agnīndu-tārakam

And there, within His mouth, she saw the whole universe — everything that moves and everything that stands still, the sky, the directions, the earth with its mountains, islands, and oceans, and the wind, the fire, the moon, and the stars.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.8.38)

jyotiś-cakraṁ jalaṁ tejo nabhasvān viyad eva ca vaikārikāṇīndriyāṇi mano mātrā guṇās trayaḥ

The wheel of the stars, water, fire, wind, and space; the senses born from the transformation of ego, the mind, their objects, and the three modes of nature —

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.8.39)

etad vicitraṁ saha-jīva-kāla- svabhāva-karmāśaya-liṅga-bhedam sūnos tanau vīkṣya vidāritāsye vrajaṁ sahātmānam avāpa śaṅkām

— all this wondrous manifold creation, together with the individual soul, time, nature, karma, desire, and the diversity of bodies — seeing all of it, and Vraja itself, and even her own self, within her son's open mouth, she was overcome with fear.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.8.40)

kiṁ svapna etad uta devamāyā kiṁ vā madīyo bata buddhi-mohaḥ atho amuṣyaiva mamārbhakasya yaḥ kaścanautpattika ātma-yogaḥ

"Is this a dream, or some illusion woven by the gods? Or is it simply a delusion of my own mind? Or could it be some innate mystic power belonging to this very child of mine?"

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.8.41)

atho yathāvan na vitarka-gocaraṁ ceto-manaḥ-karma-vacobhir añjasā yad-āśrayaṁ yena yataḥ pratīyate sudurvibhāvyaṁ praṇatāsmi tat-padam

Whatever this is, it lies entirely beyond the reach of thought, mind, action, or word — that on which all this rests, by which it is known, and from which it arises — a truth utterly beyond comprehension: to that supreme state I bow down.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.8.42)

ahaṁ mamāsau patir eṣa me suto vrajeśvarasyākhila-vittapā satī gopyaś ca gopāḥ saha-godhanāś ca me yan-māyayetthaṁ kumatiḥ sa me gatiḥ

"I, mine, this my husband, this my son, I the mistress of all the wealth of Vraja's lord, these gopis and gopas with their cattle all my own" — it is by whose maya alone that such a foolish notion has arisen in me; He alone is my true refuge.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.8.43)

itthaṁ vidita-tattvāyāṁ gopikāyāṁ sa īśvaraḥ vaiṣṇavīṁ vyatanon māyāṁ putra-snehamayīṁ vibhuḥ

When the cowherd woman had thus glimpsed the truth, the all-powerful Lord spread over her His own Vaishnavi-maya, woven entirely of maternal love for her son.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.8.44)

sadyo naṣṭa-smṛtir gopī sāropyāroham ātmajam pravṛddha-sneha-kalila- hṛdayāsīd yathā purā

At once losing that memory, the gopi took her son back onto her lap, and, just as before, her heart overflowed with even deeper tenderness.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.8.45)

trayyā copaniṣadbhiś ca sāṅkhya-yogaiś ca sātvataiḥ upagīyamāna-māhātmyaṁ hariṁ sāmanyatātmajam

Hari, whose glory is sung by the three Vedas, the Upanishads, the schools of Sankhya and Yoga, and the Vaishnava scriptures — Him Yashoda now once again regarded simply as her own ordinary child.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.8.46)

śrī-rājovāca nandaḥ kim akarod brahman śreya evaṁ mahodayam yaśodā ca mahā-bhāgā papau yasyāḥ stanaṁ hariḥ

The king said: O brahmana, what great good deeds did Nanda perform to earn such fortune, and what did the most blessed Yashoda do, she whose very breast was suckled by Hari Himself?

Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.8.47)

pitarau nānvavindetāṁ kṛṣṇodārārbhakehitam gāyanty adyāpi kavayo yal loka-śamalāpaham

His true parents, Vasudeva and Devaki, never had the chance to enjoy Krishna's magnanimous childhood deeds — deeds that poets still sing of even today, and that wash away all the world's impurity.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.8.48)

śrī-śuka uvāca droṇo vasūnāṁ pravaro dharayā bhāryayā saha kariṣyamāṇa ādeśān brahmaṇas tam uvāca ha

Shri Shuka said: Drona, foremost among the Vasus, together with his wife Dhara, wishing to carry out Brahma's command, spoke to him in this way.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.8.49)

jātayor nau mahādeve bhuvi viśveśvare harau bhaktiḥ syāt paramā loke yayāñjo durgatiṁ taret

"Once we two are born on this earth, may the highest devotion for Hari, Lord of the universe, arise within us — devotion by which every soul in this world may cross safely beyond misfortune."

Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.8.50)

astv ity uktaḥ sa bhagavān vraje droṇo mahā-yaśāḥ jajñe nanda iti khyāto yaśodā sā dharābhavat

Told, "So be it," the illustrious Drona took birth in Vraja and became known as Nanda, while Dhara became Yashoda.

Verse 51 (bhagavata.10.8.51)

tato bhaktir bhagavati putrī-bhūte janārdane dampatyor nitarām āsīd gopa-gopīṣu bhārata

Thereafter, O descendant of Bharata, when Bhagavan Janardana Himself became their very son, the devotion of that couple, and of the gopas and gopis around them, deepened beyond measure.

Verse 52 (bhagavata.10.8.52)

kṛṣṇo brahmaṇa ādeśaṁ satyaṁ kartuṁ vraje vibhuḥ saha-rāmo vasaṁś cakre teṣāṁ prītiṁ sva-līlayā

Thus the almighty Krishna, to make Brahma's word come true, dwelt in Vraja together with Rama, and through His own divine play, filled them all with joy.
