Skandha 10 · Chapter 80
The Brahmana Sudama Visits Lord Krishna in Dvaraka
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.80.1)
śrī-rājovāca bhagavan yāni cānyāni mukundasya mahātmanaḥ vīryāṇy ananta-vīryasya śrotum icchāmi he prabho
King Parikshit said: My lord, O master, I wish to hear yet more of the valorous deeds of the great-souled Mukunda, whose might is without end.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.80.2)
ko nu śrutvāsakṛd brahmann uttamaḥśloka-sat-kathāḥ virameta viśeṣa-jño viṣaṇṇaḥ kāma-mārgaṇaiḥ
O brahmana, having heard again and again the sacred accounts of the Lord of transcendent renown, what person of true discernment, weary of the pursuit of sense pleasures, could ever cease listening to them?
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.80.3)
sā vāg yayā tasya guṇān gṛṇīte karau ca tat-karma-karau manaś ca smared vasantaṁ sthira-jaṅgameṣu śṛṇoti tat-puṇya-kathāḥ sa karṇaḥ
True speech alone is that which sings His qualities; true hands alone are those employed in His service; a true mind alone is one that remembers Him dwelling within all that moves and all that does not; and true ears alone are those that listen to His sanctifying accounts.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.80.4)
śiras tu tasyobhaya-liṅgam ānamet tad eva yat paśyati tad dhi cakṣuḥ aṅgāni viṣṇor atha taj-janānāṁ pādodakaṁ yāni bhajanti nityam
True indeed is that head which bows to Him present in both the moving and the unmoving; that alone is a true eye which beholds Him; and those alone are true limbs which continually partake of the water that has washed the feet of Vishnu and His devotees.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.80.5)
sūta uvāca viṣṇu-rātena sampṛṣṭo bhagavān bādarāyaṇiḥ vāsudeve bhagavati nimagna-hṛdayo ’bravīt
Suta said: Thus questioned by Vishnurata, the illustrious Badarayani, his heart ever immersed in the Supreme Lord Vasudeva, spoke as follows.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.80.6)
śrī-śuka uvāca kṛṣṇasyāsīt sakhā kaścid brāhmaṇo brahma-vittamaḥ virakta indriyārtheṣu praśāntātmā jitendriyaḥ
Shri Shukadeva said: Krishna had a certain brahmana friend, most learned in the knowledge of the Absolute, detached from sense objects, of tranquil mind, and master of his senses.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.80.7)
yadṛcchayopapannena vartamāno gṛhāśramī tasya bhāryā ku-cailasya kṣut-kṣāmā ca tathā-vidhā
A householder, he lived on whatever came to him without seeking. His wife too, like her poorly-clad husband, was wasted with hunger.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.80.8)
pati-vratā patiṁ prāha mlāyatā vadanena sā daridraṁ sīdamānā vai vepamānābhigamya ca
That devoted wife, her face wan, approached her destitute, distressed husband, trembling as she came, and spoke thus.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.80.9)
nanu brahman bhagavataḥ sakhā sākṣāc chriyaḥ patiḥ brahmaṇyaś ca śaraṇyaś ca bhagavān sātvatarṣabhaḥ
"Is it not so, O brahmana, that you are the direct friend of the Blessed Lord, the very consort of Shri? That foremost of the Satvatas is devoted to brahmanas and ever ready to shelter them.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.80.10)
tam upaihi mahā-bhāga sādhūnāṁ ca parāyaṇam dāsyati draviṇaṁ bhūri sīdate te kuṭumbine
Go to Him, O fortunate one, the supreme refuge of the saintly. He will surely bestow abundant wealth on a suffering householder like you."
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.80.11)
āste ’dhunā dvāravatyāṁ bhoja-vṛṣṇy-andhakeśvaraḥ smarataḥ pāda-kamalam ātmānam api yacchati kiṁ nv artha-kāmān bhajato nāty-abhīṣṭān jagad-guruḥ
He, lord of the Bhojas, Vrishnis and Andhakas, now dwells in Dvaraka. To one who merely remembers His lotus feet He gives even His own self — what doubt, then, that the guru of the universe would grant wealth and pleasure, things not even truly coveted by His devotee?
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.80.12)
sa evaṁ bhāryayā vipro bahuśaḥ prārthito muhuḥ ayaṁ hi paramo lābha uttamaḥśloka-darśanam
Thus urged again and again by his wife, the brahmana reflected: "To behold the Lord of transcendent renown — this indeed is the highest gain."
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.80.13)
iti sañcintya manasā gamanāya matiṁ dadhe apy asty upāyanaṁ kiñcid gṛhe kalyāṇi dīyatām
So resolving in his mind, he decided to go, and said: "My good wife, if there is anything at home fit to offer as a gift, give it to me."
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.80.14)
yācitvā caturo muṣṭīn viprān pṛthuka-taṇḍulān caila-khaṇḍena tān baddhvā bhartre prādād upāyanam
Begging four handfuls of flattened rice from neighboring brahmanas, she tied it in a scrap of cloth and gave it to her husband as an offering to take along.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.80.15)
sa tān ādāya viprāgryaḥ prayayau dvārakāṁ kila kṛṣṇa-sandarśanaṁ mahyaṁ kathaṁ syād iti cintayan
Taking it with him, that foremost of brahmanas set out for Dvaraka, wondering all the while, "How shall I obtain sight of Krishna?"
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.80.16)
trīṇi gulmāny atīyāya tisraḥ kakṣāś ca sa-dvijaḥ vipro ’gamyāndhaka-vṛṣṇīnāṁ gṛheṣv acyuta-dharmiṇām
Passing three guard-posts and three enclosures, that excellent brahmana entered the mansions of Achyuta's devoted Andhaka-Vrishni kinsmen, places ordinarily inaccessible to anyone.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.80.17)
gṛhaṁ dvy-aṣṭa-sahasrāṇāṁ mahiṣīṇāṁ harer dvijaḥ viveśaikatamaṁ śrīmad brahmānandaṁ gato yathā
That brahmana entered one of the opulent palaces of Hari's sixteen thousand queens, feeling as though he had attained the bliss of Brahman itself.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.80.18)
taṁ vilokyācyuto dūrāt priyā-paryaṅkam āsthitaḥ sahasotthāya cābhyetya dorbhyāṁ paryagrahīn mudā
Seated on His beloved's couch, Lord Achyuta caught sight of him from afar, rose at once, went forward, and joyfully embraced him with both arms.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.80.19)
sakhyuḥ priyasya viprarṣer aṅga-saṅgāti-nirvṛtaḥ prīto vyamuñcad ab-bindūn netrābhyāṁ puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ
Overwhelmed with joy at the touch of his dear brahmana friend's body, the lotus-eyed Lord, moved by love, let tears fall from both His eyes.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.80.20)
athopaveśya paryaṅke svayam sakhyuḥ samarhaṇam upahṛtyāvanijyāsya pādau pādāvanejanīḥ
Then, seating His friend upon the couch, He Himself brought the articles of honor, washed his feet, and took up that very water in which they had been bathed.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.80.21)
agrahīc chirasā rājan bhagavāḻ loka-pāvanaḥ vyalimpad divya-gandhena candanāguru-kuṅkumaiḥ
O King, the Lord who purifies all worlds took that water upon His own head, and anointed His friend with the divine fragrance of sandalwood, aguru and kumkum.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.80.22)
dhūpaiḥ surabhibhir mitraṁ pradīpāvalibhir mudā arcitvāvedya tāmbūlaṁ gāṁ ca svāgatam abravīt
He worshipped His friend with fragrant incense and rows of lamps, joyfully offered him betel and a cow, and welcomed him with kind words.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.80.23)
ku-cailaṁ malinaṁ kṣāmaṁ dvijaṁ dhamani-santatam devī paryacarat sākṣāc cāmara-vyajanena vai
The goddess Shri herself, in person, fanned that brahmana with a chamara — poorly clad, soiled, so emaciated his veins showed through his skin.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.80.24)
antaḥ-pura-jano dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇenāmala-kīrtinā vismito ’bhūd ati-prītyā avadhūtaṁ sabhājitam
Seeing this disheveled brahmana so lovingly honored by Krishna of spotless fame, all the people of the inner palace were astonished.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.80.25)
kim anena kṛtaṁ puṇyam avadhūtena bhikṣuṇā śriyā hīnena loke ’smin garhitenādhamena ca
"What great merit can this shabby, penniless mendicant have earned — he whom this world regards as lowly and despised —
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.80.26)
yo ’sau tri-loka-guruṇā śrī-nivāsena sambhṛtaḥ paryaṅka-sthāṁ śriyaṁ hitvā pariṣvakto ’gra-jo yathā
— that the guru of the three worlds, the very abode of Shri, should leave the goddess seated on His own bed and embrace him as though he were an elder brother!"
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.80.27)
kathayāṁ cakratur gāthāḥ pūrvā gurukule satoḥ ātmanor lalitā rājan karau gṛhya parasparam
O King, holding each other's hands, the two of them fell to recounting the sweet stories of their days together in their guru's household.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.80.28)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca api brahman gurukulād bhavatā labdha-dakṣiṇāt samāvṛttena dharma-jña bhāryoḍhā sadṛśī na vā
The Blessed Lord said: My dear brahmana, versed as you are in dharma, after presenting the guru-dakshina and returning home from our teacher's school, did you marry a wife suited to you, or not?
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.80.29)
prāyo gṛheṣu te cittam akāma-vihitaṁ tathā naivāti-prīyase vidvan dhaneṣu viditaṁ hi me
Though for the most part occupied with household affairs, your mind, I know, remains untouched by worldly desire; nor, O learned one, do you take much delight in wealth — this I well know.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.80.30)
kecit kurvanti karmāṇi kāmair ahata-cetasaḥ tyajantaḥ prakṛtīr daivīr yathāhaṁ loka-saṅgraham
Some, having cast off the divine modes of material nature, perform their duties with minds untouched by desire — even as I Myself act, only to guide and instruct the world.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.80.31)
kaccid gurukule vāsaṁ brahman smarasi nau yataḥ dvijo vijñāya vijñeyaṁ tamasaḥ pāram aśnute
Do you recall, my brahmana friend, our life together in the guru's household, whence the twice-born, having learned all that is to be learned, crosses beyond the darkness of ignorance?
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.80.32)
sa vai sat-karmaṇāṁ sākṣād dvijāter iha sambhavaḥ ādyo ’ṅga yatrāśramiṇāṁ yathāhaṁ jñāna-do guruḥ
My friend, he who gives physical birth is indeed the first guru of the twice-born; he who establishes one in the sacraments and the orders of life is greater still; but he who bestows true knowledge is the highest guru of all — he is as good as Myself.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.80.33)
nanv artha-kovidā brahman varṇāśrama-vatām iha ye mayā guruṇā vācā taranty añjo bhavārṇavam
Truly, O brahmana, among all who follow the varnashrama system, those alone best understand their own good who, guided by My words as guru, cross with ease this ocean of worldly existence.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.80.34)
nāham ijyā-prajātibhyāṁ tapasopaśamena vā tuṣyeyaṁ sarva-bhūtātmā guru-śuśrūṣayā yathā
I, the very Self of all beings, am not so pleased by sacrifice, by brahminical birth, by austerity, or by self-restraint, as I am pleased by service rendered to one's guru.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.80.35)
api naḥ smaryate brahman vṛttaṁ nivasatāṁ gurau guru-dāraiś coditānām indhanānayane kvacit
Do you remember, my brahmana friend, what befell us while living at our guru's house — the time our guru's wife sent us to fetch firewood?
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.80.36)
praviṣṭānāṁ mahāraṇyam apartau su-mahad dvija vāta-varṣam abhūt tīvraṁ niṣṭhurāḥ stanayitnavaḥ
As we entered the great forest, O twice-born one, an untimely and violent storm broke — fierce wind and rain, and harsh peals of thunder.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.80.37)
sūryaś cāstaṁ gatas tāvat tamasā cāvṛtā diśaḥ nimnaṁ kūlaṁ jala-mayaṁ na prājñāyata kiñcana
Just then the sun set, and darkness covered every quarter; with the ground everywhere under water, we could no longer tell high land from low.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.80.38)
vayaṁ bhṛśam tatra mahānilāmbubhir nihanyamānā mahur ambu-samplave diśo ’vidanto ’tha parasparaṁ vane gṛhīta-hastāḥ paribabhrimāturāḥ
There, battered relentlessly by the violent wind and rain amid the flood, unable to tell one direction from another, we wandered about that forest in distress, hand clasped in hand.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.80.39)
etad viditvā udite ravau sāndīpanir guruḥ anveṣamāṇo naḥ śiṣyān ācāryo ’paśyad āturān
Learning of this, our guru Sandipani, at sunrise, set out in search of us, his disciples, and found us in that anguished state.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.80.40)
aho he putrakā yūyam asmad-arthe ’ti-duḥkhitāḥ ātmā vai prāṇinām preṣṭhas tam anādṛtya mat-parāḥ
(The guru said:) "Ah, my sons, how greatly you have suffered for my sake! One's own body is dearest of all to every living being, yet, devoted to me, you disregarded even that.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.80.41)
etad eva hi sac-chiṣyaiḥ kartavyaṁ guru-niṣkṛtam yad vai viśuddha-bhāvena sarvārthātmārpaṇaṁ gurau
This alone is the true disciple's duty and the fitting repayment to his guru: to offer him, with a pure heart, all one's wealth and one's very self."
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.80.42)
tuṣṭo ’haṁ bho dvija-śreṣṭhāḥ satyāḥ santu manorathāḥ chandāṁsy ayāta-yāmāni bhavantv iha paratra ca
"I am well pleased with you, O foremost of the twice-born. May your desires all come true, and may the Vedic hymns you have studied never lose their potency, here or hereafter."
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.80.43)
itthaṁ-vidhāny anekāni vasatāṁ guru-veśmani guror anugraheṇaiva pumān pūrṇaḥ praśāntaye
Many such things befell us while dwelling in our guru's household. It is by the guru's grace alone that a person becomes complete and attains true peace.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.80.44)
śrī-brāhmaṇa uvāca kim asmābhir anirvṛttaṁ deva-deva jagad-guro bhavatā satya-kāmena yeṣāṁ vāso guror abhūt
The brahmana said: O God of gods, O teacher of the universe, what could possibly remain unattained by those who dwelt together with You, whose every wish comes true, at our guru's home?
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.80.45)
yasya cchando-mayaṁ brahma deha āvapanaṁ vibho śreyasāṁ tasya guruṣu vāso ’tyanta-viḍambanam
O almighty one, whose very body is the Veda-formed Absolute, the wellspring of every good — that You should dwell at the home of a guru is nothing but the sheerest of Your divine plays.
