Draupadi Meets the Queens of Krishna

Chapter 82All chaptersChapter 84

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.83.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca tathānugṛhya bhagavān gopīnāṁ sa gurur gatiḥ yudhiṣṭhiram athāpṛcchat sarvāṁś ca suhṛdo ’vyayam

Shukadeva said: Having thus shown His mercy to the gopis, Bhagavan — who is Himself the spiritual teacher and supreme goal of the gopis — then went to Yudhishthira and inquired about the welfare of all His other unfailing kinsmen and friends.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.83.2)

ta evaṁ loka-nāthena paripṛṣṭāḥ su-sat-kṛtāḥ pratyūcur hṛṣṭa-manasas tat-pādekṣā-hatāṁhasaḥ

Thus questioned and warmly honored by the Lord of the universe, they — their sins destroyed simply by the sight of His feet — joyfully replied.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.83.3)

kuto ’śivaṁ tvac-caraṇāmbujāsavaṁ mahan-manasto mukha-niḥsṛtaṁ kvacit pibanti ye karṇa-puṭair alaṁ prabho dehaṁ-bhṛtāṁ deha-kṛd-asmṛti-cchidam

They said: O Lord, for those who freely drink through their ears the nectar of Your lotus feet — which flows first from the hearts of great souls and then from their mouths, and which destroys the embodied soul's forgetfulness of You, the creator of its very body — how could misfortune ever touch them?

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.83.4)

hi tvātma dhāma-vidhutātma-kṛta-try-avasthām ānanda-samplavam akhaṇḍam akuṇṭha-bodham kālopasṛṣṭa-nigamāvana ātta-yoga- māyākṛtiṁ paramahaṁsa-gatiṁ natāḥ sma

By the radiance of Your own abode, the three states of consciousness that the soul fashions for itself are dispelled, and we become immersed in unbroken bliss and unclouded knowledge. O protector of the Vedas when they are endangered by time, You have assumed this form through Your Yoga-maya. We bow down to You, the supreme goal of the perfected saints.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.83.5)

śrī-ṛṣir uvāca ity uttamaḥ-śloka-śikhā-maṇiṁ janeṣv abhiṣṭuvatsv andhaka-kaurava-striyaḥ sametya govinda-kathā mitho ’gṛṇaṁs tri-loka-gītāḥ śṛṇu varṇayāmi te

The great sage said: While the people thus praised the Lord, the crest jewel among all who are gloriously sung, the women of the Andhaka and Kaurava families gathered together and began to speak among themselves of Govinda's deeds, celebrated throughout the three worlds. Listen, O King, as I relate them to you.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.83.6)

śrī-draupady uvāca he vaidarbhy acyuto bhadre he jāmbavati kauśale he satyabhāme kālindi śaibye rohiṇi lakṣmaṇe

Sri Draupadi said: O Vaidarbhi (Rukmini)! O gracious Bhadra! O Jambavati! O Kaushala (Nagnajiti)! O Satyabhama! O Kalindi! O Shaibya! O Rohini! O Lakshmana!

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.83.7)

he kṛṣṇa-patnya etan no brūte vo bhagavān svayam upayeme yathā lokam anukurvan sva-māyayā

O wives of Krishna, please tell us how the Lord Himself, imitating the ways of ordinary men through His own divine power, came to marry each of you.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.83.8)

śrī-rukmiṇy uvāca caidyāya mārpayitum udyata-kārmukeṣu rājasv ajeya-bhaṭa-śekharitāṅghri-reṇuḥ ninye mṛgendra iva bhāgam ajāvi-yūthāt tac-chrī-niketa-caraṇo ’stu mamārcanāya

Sri Rukmini said: While the assembled kings stood with bows drawn, ready to hand me over to Shishupala, He whose dust of the feet even invincible warriors bear upon their heads carried me off — like a lion taking his share from a flock of goats and sheep. May those feet of His, the abode of Goddess Shri, always be mine to worship.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.83.9)

śrī-satyabhāmovāca yo me sanābhi-vadha-tapta-hṛdā tatena liptābhiśāpam apamārṣṭum upājahāra jitvarkṣa-rājam atha ratnam adāt sa tena bhītaḥ pitādiśata māṁ prabhave ’pi dattām

Sri Satyabhama said: My father's heart was tormented, grieving over the accusation cast on Krishna after my uncle's death. To wipe away that stain, the Lord defeated the king of the bears and reclaimed the Syamantaka jewel, restoring it to my father. Fearful of his own offense, my father then offered me to the Lord, even though I had already been promised elsewhere.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.83.10)

śrī-jāmbavaty uvāca prājñāya deha-kṛd amuṁ nija-nātha-daivaṁ sītā-patiṁ tri-navahāny amunābhyayudhyat jñātvā parīkṣita upāharad arhaṇaṁ māṁ pādau pragṛhya maṇināham amuṣya dāsī

Sri Jambavati said: Not knowing that this was none other than his own master and worshipable Deity, the husband of Sita, my father fought Him for twenty-seven days. When he came to recognize Him, he took hold of His feet and offered both me and the jewel to Him as tribute. I am simply His maidservant.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.83.11)

śrī-kālindy uvāca tapaś carantīm ājñāya sva-pāda-sparśanāśayā sakhyopetyāgrahīt pāṇiṁ yo ’haṁ tad-gṛha-mārjanī

Sri Kalindi said: I was performing austerities in hope of one day touching His feet. Knowing this, He came to me together with His friend and took my hand in marriage. Now I am but the sweeper of His household.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.83.12)

śrī-mitravindovāca yo māṁ svayaṁvara upetya vijitya bhū-pān ninye śva-yūtha-gaṁ ivātma-baliṁ dvipāriḥ bhrātṝṁś ca me ’pakurutaḥ sva-puraṁ śriyaukas tasyāstu me ’nu-bhavam aṅghry-avanejanatvam

Sri Mitravinda said: Coming to my svayamvara, He, like a lion among elephants, defeated all the kings there — including my own brothers who had insulted Him — and carried me off to His city as His rightful share, He who is the shelter of the goddess of fortune. May I have the fortune of washing His feet, birth after birth.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.83.13)

śrī-satyovāca saptokṣaṇo ’ti-bala-vīrya-su-tīkṣṇa-śṛṅgān pitrā kṛtān kṣitipa-vīrya-parīkṣaṇāya tān vīra-durmada-hanas tarasā nigṛhya krīḍan babandha ha yathā śiśavo ’ja-tokān

Sri Satya said: My father had prepared seven exceedingly powerful bulls with fiercely sharp horns to test the strength of the kings, and these bulls had already crushed the pride of many a hero. But the Lord, the destroyer of heroic vanity, subdued them with ease and, as if in play, tied them up just as children tie up the kids of a goat.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.83.14)

ya itthaṁ vīrya-śulkāṁ māṁ dāsībhiś catur-aṅgiṇīm pathi nirjitya rājanyān ninye tad-dāsyam astu me

Having thus won me by His valor, and defeating the kings who opposed Him along the way as He led me off with my maidservants and a four-division army, He brought me to His city. May His service ever be mine.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.83.15)

śrī-bhadrovāca pitā me mātuleyāya svayam āhūya dattavān kṛṣṇe kṛṣṇāya tac-cittām akṣauhiṇyā sakhī-janaiḥ

Sri Bhadra said: My father himself invited his nephew Krishna, on whom my heart had already been set, and gave me to Him, accompanied by an akshauhini army and my female companions.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.83.16)

asya me pāda-saṁsparśo bhavej janmani janmani karmabhir bhrāmyamāṇāyā yena tac chreya ātmanaḥ

Though I am made to wander through this world by the results of my own actions, may I touch His feet birth after birth — for in that alone lies the true good of my soul.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.83.17)

śrī-lakṣmaṇovāca mamāpi rājñy acyuta-janma-karma śrutvā muhur nārada-gītam āsa ha cittaṁ mukunde kila padma-hastayā vṛtaḥ su-sammṛśya vihāya loka-pān

Sri Lakshmana said: O Queen, hearing again and again from Narada Muni the songs of Achyuta's birth and deeds, my own heart too became devoted to Mukunda. Indeed, it is said that even lotus-handed Lakshmi, after careful deliberation, chose Him alone, setting aside the great guardians of the worlds.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.83.18)

jñātvā mama mataṁ sādhvi pitā duhitṛ-vatsalaḥ bṛhatsena iti khyātas tatropāyam acīkarat

O saintly lady, knowing my heart's desire, my father — known as Brihatsena, ever affectionate toward his daughter — arranged the means to fulfill it.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.83.19)

yathā svayaṁ-vare rājñi matsyaḥ pārthepsayā kṛtaḥ ayaṁ tu bahir ācchanno dṛśyate sa jale param

O Queen, just as a fish target was set up at your svayamvara to secure Arjuna for you, so too a fish was placed as the target at mine. But mine was concealed on every side, so that only its reflection could be seen in the water below.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.83.20)

śrutvaitat sarvato bhū-pā āyayur mat-pituḥ puram sarvāstra-śastra-tattva-jñāḥ sopādhyāyāḥ sahasraśaḥ

Hearing of this, thousands of kings, well versed in every weapon and every art of arms, came from every direction to my father's city, accompanied by their teachers.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.83.21)

pitrā sampūjitāḥ sarve yathā-vīryaṁ yathā-vayaḥ ādaduḥ sa-śaraṁ cāpaṁ veddhuṁ parṣadi mad-dhiyaḥ

My father honored each of them according to his strength and age. Then those whose hearts were set on winning me took up the bow with its arrow, one after another, to pierce the target before the assembly.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.83.22)

ādāya vyasṛjan kecit sajyaṁ kartum anīśvarāḥ ā-koṣṭhaṁ jyāṁ samutkṛṣya petur eke ’munāhatāḥ

Some kings took up the bow but, unable even to string it, cast it aside. Others managed to draw the string to the very tip of the bow, only to be flung to the ground by its recoil.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.83.23)

sajyaṁ kṛtvāpare vīrā māgadhāmbaṣṭha-cedipāḥ bhīmo duryodhanaḥ karṇo nāvidaṁs tad-avasthitim

A few heroes — the king of Magadha, the king of Ambashtha, the king of Chedi, Bhima, Duryodhana, and Karna — succeeded in stringing the bow, but none of them could make out where the target lay.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.83.24)

matsyābhāsaṁ jale vīkṣya jñātvā ca tad-avasthitim pārtho yatto ’sṛjad bāṇaṁ nācchinat paspṛśe param

Arjuna saw the fish's reflection in the water and correctly judged its position; taking careful aim, he released his arrow — but it did not pierce the target, only grazing it.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.83.25)

rājanyeṣu nivṛtteṣu bhagna-māneṣu māniṣu bhagavān dhanur ādāya sajyaṁ kṛtvātha līlayā

When all the proud kings had given up, their pride broken, Bhagavan took up the bow and, with effortless ease, strung it and fitted His arrow.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.83.26)

tasmin sandhāya viśikhaṁ matsyaṁ vīkṣya sakṛj jale chittveṣuṇāpātayat taṁ sūrye cābhijiti sthite

As the sun stood in the constellation Abhijit, He glanced at the fish in the water only once, then pierced it with His arrow and brought it down.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.83.27)

divi dundubhayo nedur jaya-śabda-yutā bhuvi devāś ca kusumāsārān mumucur harṣa-vihvalāḥ

Kettledrums resounded in the heavens, and on the earth shouts of Jaya, Jaya rang out. Overwhelmed with joy, the demigods showered flowers.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.83.28)

tad raṅgam āviśam ahaṁ kala-nūpurābhyāṁ padbhyāṁ pragṛhya kanakojjvala-ratna-mālām nūtne nivīya paridhāya ca kauśikāgrye sa-vrīḍa-hāsa-vadanā kavarī-dhṛta-srak

At that moment, I entered the arena, my anklets tinkling sweetly with each step, carrying in my hands a necklace ablaze with gold and jewels, dressed in new garments of the finest silk, my face bearing a shy smile, and a garland woven into my hair.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.83.29)

unnīya vaktram uru-kuntala-kuṇḍala-tviḍ- gaṇḍa-sthalaṁ śiśira-hāsa-kaṭākṣa-mokṣaiḥ rājño nirīkṣya paritaḥ śanakair murārer aṁse ’nurakta-hṛdayā nidadhe sva-mālām

Lifting my face, my cheeks glowing with the sheen of my thick locks and earrings, I glanced all around at the assembled kings with a coolly smiling, sidelong gaze — and then, my heart utterly devoted, I slowly placed my garland upon the shoulder of Murari.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.83.30)

tāvan mṛdaṅga-paṭahāḥ śaṅkha-bhery-ānakādayaḥ ninedur naṭa-nartakyo nanṛtur gāyakā jaguḥ

At that very moment, mridangas, pataha and anaka drums, conches and bheris resounded together. Dancers began to dance, and singers began to sing.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.83.31)

evaṁ vṛte bhagavati mayeśe nṛpa-yūthapāḥ na sehire yājñaseni spardhanto hṛc-chayāturāḥ

O daughter of Yajnasena, when I thus chose Bhagavan as my Lord, the assembled kings could not bear it; tormented by desire, they began quarreling with one another.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.83.32)

māṁ tāvad ratham āropya haya-ratna-catuṣṭayam śārṅgam udyamya sannaddhas tasthāv ājau catur-bhujaḥ

He at once seated me on His chariot, drawn by four superb horses, and, donning His armor and raising His bow Sharnga, stood on the battlefield in His four-armed form.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.83.33)

dārukaś codayām āsa kāñcanopaskaraṁ ratham miṣatāṁ bhū-bhujāṁ rājñi mṛgāṇāṁ mṛga-rāḍ iva

O Queen, Daruka drove that gold-adorned chariot forward, while all the kings could only look on helplessly, like deer watching a lion.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.83.34)

te ’nvasajjanta rājanyā niṣeddhuṁ pathi kecana saṁyattā uddhṛteṣv-āsā grāma-siṁhā yathā harim

Some of those kings, raising their bows, blocked the road to stop Him and pursued Him — just as village dogs bark and give chase behind a lion.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.83.35)

te śārṅga-cyuta-bāṇaughaiḥ kṛtta-bāhv-aṅghri-kandharāḥ nipetuḥ pradhane kecid eke santyajya dudruvuḥ

Under the deluge of arrows released from His bow Sharnga, their arms, legs, and necks were severed, and they fell upon the battlefield; the rest abandoned the fight and fled.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.83.36)

tataḥ purīṁ yadu-patir aty-alaṅkṛtāṁ ravi-cchada-dhvaja-paṭa-citra-toraṇām kuśasthalīṁ divi bhuvi cābhisaṁstutāṁ samāviśat taraṇir iva sva-ketanam

Then the Lord of the Yadus entered that most splendidly adorned city of Kushasthali, its flags and banners so vast they seemed to shade the sun, its gateways magnificent, a city praised both in heaven and on earth — He entered it as the sun enters its own abode.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.83.37)

pitā me pūjayām āsa suhṛt-sambandhi-bāndhavān mahārha-vāso-’laṅkāraiḥ śayyāsana-paricchadaiḥ

My father honored his friends, relations, and kinsmen with priceless garments and ornaments, and with fine beds, seats, and furnishings.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.83.38)

dāsībhiḥ sarva-sampadbhir bhaṭebha-ratha-vājibhiḥ āyudhāni mahārhāṇi dadau pūrṇasya bhaktitaḥ

With devotion he presented to that all-fulfilled Lord maidservants adorned with every treasure, together with infantry, elephants, chariots and horses, and weapons of the highest value.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.83.39)

ātmārāmasya tasyemā vayaṁ vai gṛha-dāsikāḥ sarva-saṅga-nivṛttyāddhā tapasā ca babhūvima

In this way, by renouncing every worldly attachment and through severe austerity, we have all become the household maidservants of that self-satisfied Lord.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.83.40)

mahiṣya ūcuḥ bhaumaṁ nihatya sa-gaṇaṁ yudhi tena ruddhā jñātvātha naḥ kṣiti-jaye jita-rāja-kanyāḥ nirmucya saṁsṛti-vimokṣam anusmarantīḥ pādāmbujaṁ pariṇināya ya āpta-kāmaḥ

The queens said: Having slain Bhaumasura and his followers in battle, and finding us in his prison, the Lord learned that we were the daughters of kings whom Bhauma had conquered in his campaigns. Setting us free, and seeing that we ceaselessly remembered His lotus feet, which alone grant release from the bondage of material existence, that Lord — whose every desire is already fulfilled — took our hands in marriage.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.83.41)

na vayaṁ sādhvi sāmrājyaṁ svārājyaṁ bhaujyam apy uta vairājyaṁ pārameṣṭhyaṁ ca ānantyaṁ vā hareḥ padam

O saintly lady, we long for neither an empire, nor self-rule, nor unlimited enjoyment, nor the rank of the cosmic ruler, nor the position of Brahma, nor immortality, nor even Hari's own supreme abode.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.83.42)

kāmayāmaha etasya śrīmat-pāda-rajaḥ śriyaḥ kuca-kuṅkuma-gandhāḍhyaṁ mūrdhnā voḍhuṁ gadā-bhṛtaḥ

We desire only to bear upon our heads the dust of the feet of the mace-bearing Lord — that dust made fragrant with the saffron from His beloved's breast, and cherished by the goddess of fortune herself.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.83.43)

vraja-striyo yad vāñchanti pulindyas tṛṇa-vīrudhaḥ gāvaś cārayato gopāḥ pada-sparśaṁ mahātmanaḥ

Just as the women of Vraja, the forest-dwelling Pulinda women, and the cowherds who tend His cows — even the grasses and creepers themselves — long for the touch of that great soul's feet, so do we long for the very same.
