Skandha 10 · Chapter 90
A Summary of Lord Krishna's Glories
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.90.1)
śrī-śuka uvāca sukhaṁ sva-puryāṁ nivasan dvārakāyāṁ śriyaḥ patiḥ sarva-sampat-samṛddhāyāṁ juṣṭāyāṁ vṛṣṇi-puṅgavaiḥ
Shri Shukadeva said: The Lord of the goddess of fortune dwelt happily in His own capital, Dvaraka — a city rich with every opulence, inhabited by the foremost of the Vrishnis.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.90.2)
strībhiś cottama-veṣābhir nava-yauvana-kāntibhiḥ kandukādibhir harmyeṣu krīḍantībhis taḍid-dyubhiḥ
Women of radiant youth, richly adorned, would play with balls and other toys on the rooftops of the mansions, shining there like flashes of lightning.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.90.3)
nityaṁ saṅkula-mārgāyāṁ mada-cyudbhir mataṅ-gajaiḥ sv-alaṅkṛtair bhaṭair aśvai rathaiś ca kanakojjvalaiḥ
The city's roads were forever thronged with elephants exuding rut, richly adorned soldiers, horses, and chariots gleaming with gold.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.90.4)
udyānopavanāḍhyāyāṁ puṣpita-druma-rājiṣu nirviśad-bhṛṅga-vihagair nāditāyāṁ samantataḥ
The city was rich in gardens and groves, where rows of flowering trees resounded on every side with the murmur of hovering bees and birds.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.90.5)
reme ṣoḍaśa-sāhasra- patnīnāṁ eka-vallabhaḥ tāvad vicitra-rūpo ’sau tad-geheṣu maharddhiṣu
The sole beloved of sixteen thousand wives, He, assuming an equal number of wondrous forms, sported simultaneously in each of their magnificent homes.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.90.6)
protphullotpala-kahlāra- kumudāmbhoja-reṇubhiḥ vāsitāmala-toyeṣu kūjad-dvija-kuleṣu ca
He would sport in those pure waters, fragrant with the pollen of blooming lotuses, kahlaras and kumudas, and echoing with the warbling of birds,
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.90.7)
vijahāra vigāhyāmbho hradinīṣu mahodayaḥ kuca-kuṅkuma-liptāṅgaḥ parirabdhaś ca yoṣitām
that most glorious Lord would immerse Himself and sport in those pools, His body reddened with the kumkum from the embraces of those women.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.90.8)
upagīyamāno gandharvair mṛdaṅga-paṇavānakān vādayadbhir mudā vīṇāṁ sūta-māgadha-vandibhiḥ
The Gandharvas joyfully sang His praises to the beat of mridangas, panavas and anakas, while the Sutas, Magadhas and court-poets recited hymns of praise to the strains of the vina;
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.90.9)
sicyamāno ’cyutas tābhir hasantībhiḥ sma recakaiḥ pratiṣiñcan vicikrīḍe yakṣībhir yakṣa-rāḍ iva
In this way Achyuta, drenched by His laughing queens with their water-syringes, and drenching them in turn, sported just as the king of the Yakshas sports amid the Yaksha maidens.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.90.10)
tāḥ klinna-vastra-vivṛtoru-kuca-pradeśāḥ siñcantya uddhṛta-bṛhat-kavara-prasūnāḥ kāntaṁ sma recaka-jihīrṣayayopaguhya jāta-smarotsmaya-lasad-vadanā virejuḥ
Their wet garments revealing their thighs and breasts, their great braided flowers scattering as they sprayed the water, on the pretext of snatching away His syringe they would fold Him in their embrace — and thus, desire quickening within them, their faces alight with smiles, they shone in radiant beauty.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.90.11)
kṛṣṇas tu tat-stana-viṣajjita-kuṅkuma-srak krīḍābhiṣaṅga-dhuta-kuntala-vṛnda-bandhaḥ siñcan muhur yuvatibhiḥ pratiṣicyamāno reme kareṇubhir ivebha-patiḥ parītaḥ
Krishna's own garland grew smeared with kumkum from their breasts, His abundant locks tousled by their playful embraces; sprayed again and again by those young women, and spraying them in turn, He rejoiced just as the lord of elephants rejoices, surrounded by his herd of she-elephants.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.90.12)
naṭānāṁ nartakīnāṁ ca gīta-vādyopajīvinām krīḍālaṅkāra-vāsāṁsi kṛṣṇo ’dāt tasya ca striyaḥ
Afterward, Krishna and His queens would give away the ornaments and garments worn during their water sports to the actors, dancers and musicians who earned their livelihood by singing and playing.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.90.13)
kṛṣṇasyaivaṁ viharato gaty-ālāpekṣita-smitaiḥ narma-kṣveli-pariṣvaṅgaiḥ strīṇāṁ kila hṛtā dhiyaḥ
Thus, as Krishna sported, His gait, His conversation, His glances and smiles, and His jests, playful sportiveness and embraces, would utterly steal away the hearts of those women.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.90.14)
ūcur mukundaika-dhiyo gira unmatta-vaj jaḍam cintayantyo ’ravindākṣaṁ tāni me gadataḥ śṛṇu
Those queens, their minds fixed on Mukunda alone, thinking constantly of their lotus-eyed Lord, would speak as though deranged, their words half-formed. Hear now from me those very words which I shall relate.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.90.15)
mahiṣya ūcuḥ kurari vilapasi tvaṁ vīta-nidrā na śeṣe svapiti jagati rātryām īśvaro gupta-bodhaḥ vayam iva sakhi kaccid gāḍha-nirviddha-cetā nalina-nayana-hāsodāra-līlekṣitena
The queens said: O kurari bird, you are lamenting, sleepless, unable to rest. The Lord of this whole world, whose awareness never truly sleeps, lies somewhere resting through the night. O friend, are you too, like us, pierced to the depths of your heart by the generous, playfully smiling glance of that lotus-eyed one?
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.90.16)
netre nimīlayasi naktam adṛṣṭa-bandhus tvaṁ roravīṣi karuṇaṁ bata cakravāki dāsyaṁ gata vayam ivācyuta-pāda-juṣṭāṁ kiṁ vā srajaṁ spṛhayase kavareṇa voḍhum
O chakravaki, you too close your eyes in the night, deprived of your unseen mate, and cry out so pitifully. Have you too, like us, become a servant of Achyuta, longing to wear in your braid a garland that has touched His feet?
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.90.17)
bho bhoḥ sadā niṣṭanase udanvann alabdha-nidro ’dhigata-prajāgaraḥ kim vā mukundāpahṛtātma-lāñchanaḥ prāptāṁ daśāṁ tvaṁ ca gato duratyayām
O ocean, you too are forever roaring, never resting at night. Have you also lost your sleep? Or is it, as with us, that Mukunda has taken away your very own treasures, and you too have come to share this same insurmountable condition that we endure?
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.90.18)
tvaṁ yakṣmaṇā balavatāsi gṛhīta indo kṣīṇas tamo na nija-dīdhitibhiḥ kṣiṇoṣi kaccin mukunda-gaditāni yathā vayaṁ tvaṁ vismṛtya bhoḥ sthagita-gīr upalakṣyase naḥ
O moon, you too seem seized by some grievous wasting sickness, so weakened that you can no longer dispel the darkness with your own rays. Is it, perhaps, that you too, like us, having forgotten the words Mukunda once spoke, have fallen silent, your voice checked, just as ours has?
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.90.19)
kiṁ nv ācaritam asmābhir malayānila te ’priyam govindāpāṅga-nirbhinne hṛdīrayasi naḥ smaram
O breeze from the Malaya mountain, what displeasing thing have we done to you, that you should stir desire yet again in our hearts, already torn open by Govinda's sidelong glance?
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.90.20)
megha śrīmaṁs tvam asi dayito yādavendrasya nūnaṁ śrīvatsāṅkaṁ vayam iva bhavān dhyāyati prema-baddhaḥ aty-utkaṇṭhaḥ śavala-hṛdayo ’smad-vidho bāṣpa-dhārāḥ smṛtvā smṛtvā visṛjasi muhur duḥkha-das tat-prasaṅgaḥ
O glorious cloud, you must surely be dear to that lord of the Yadus who bears the mark of Shrivatsa — you too, like us, bound by love, meditate upon Him alone. Your heart, like ours, grows restless and troubled with longing, and remembering Him again and again, you pour forth streams of tears — such is the pain that comes from association with Him!
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.90.21)
priya-rāva-padāni bhāṣase mṛta-sañjīvikayānayā girā karavāṇi kim adya te priyaṁ vada me valgita-kaṇṭha kokila
O sweet-throated cuckoo, in that very voice which could revive the dead, you utter those same beloved sounds we once heard from our dearest, the most eloquent of all speakers. Tell me, what may I do today to please you?
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.90.22)
na calasi na vadasy udāra-buddhe kṣiti-dhara cintayase mahāntam artham api bata vasudeva-nandanāṅghriṁ vayam iva kāmayase stanair vidhartum
O generous-hearted mountain, you neither stir nor speak — are you pondering some matter of great weight? Or is it, perhaps, that you too, like us, long to bear upon your own breast the feet of Vasudeva's darling son?
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.90.23)
śuṣyad-dhradāḥ karaśitā bata sindhu-patnyaḥ sampraty apāsta-kamala-śriya iṣṭa-bhartuḥ yadvad vayaṁ madhu-pateḥ praṇayāvalokam aprāpya muṣṭa-hṛdayāḥ puru-karśitāḥ sma
O rivers, consorts of the ocean, your pools are drying up; you have grown thin, your beauty of lotuses all but gone — have you too, deprived of your beloved husband's affectionate glance, become as we have, our hearts stolen away, utterly wasted for want of the loving look of the Lord of Madhu?
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.90.24)
haṁsa svāgatam āsyatāṁ piba payo brūhy aṅga śaureḥ kathāṁ dūtaṁ tvāṁ nu vidāma kaccid ajitaḥ svasty āsta uktaṁ purā kiṁ vā naś cala-sauhṛdaḥ smarati taṁ kasmād bhajāmo vayaṁ kṣaudrālāpaya kāma-daṁ śriyam ṛte saivaika-niṣṭhā striyām
O royal swan, welcome; sit here, drink this milk, and, dear one, tell us some news of the descendant of Shura — we know well that you are His messenger. Is that unconquerable Lord keeping well? Does that fickle-hearted friend of ours still remember the words He once spoke to us? Why indeed should we go on worshiping Him? O servant of that petty-minded mistress, go tell Him, the fulfiller of all our desires, to come here without the goddess of fortune — is she truly His only, undivided beloved?
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.90.25)
śrī-śuka uvāca itīdṛśena bhāvena kṛṣṇe yogeśvareśvare kriyamāṇena mādhavyo lebhire paramāṁ gatim
Shri Shukadeva said: Speaking and acting in this manner, filled with such loving devotion toward Lord Krishna, the Lord of even the masters of yoga, His beloved queens attained the supreme destination.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.90.26)
śruta-mātro ’pi yaḥ strīṇāṁ prasahyākarṣate manaḥ uru-gāyoru-gīto vā paśyantīnāṁ ca kiṁ punaḥ
He whose very mention, even without being sung and glorified far and wide, forcibly draws away the minds of women — what then of those women who behold Him directly?
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.90.27)
yāḥ samparyacaran premṇā pāda-saṁvāhanādibhiḥ jagad-guruṁ bhartṛ-buddhyā tāsāṁ kim varṇyate tapaḥ
As for those women who, thinking of Him as their very husband, served that guru of the universe with love — through the massaging of His feet and the like — how could their austerity ever be adequately described?
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.90.28)
evaṁ vedoditaṁ dharmam anutiṣṭhan satāṁ gatiḥ gṛhaṁ dharmārtha-kāmānāṁ muhuś cādarśayat padam
Thus, observing the duties enjoined by the Vedas, the Lord, the supreme goal of the saintly, repeatedly showed how the aims of dharma, artha and kama could all be attained within household life itself.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.90.29)
āsthitasya paraṁ dharmaṁ kṛṣṇasya gṛha-medhinām āsan ṣoḍaśa-sāhasraṁ mahiṣyaś ca śatādhikam
Established in the highest dharma of a householder, Lord Krishna had sixteen thousand one hundred wives.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.90.30)
tāsāṁ strī-ratna-bhūtānām aṣṭau yāḥ prāg udāhṛtāḥ rukmiṇī-pramukhā rājaṁs tat-putrāś cānupūrvaśaḥ
O King, among those jewel-like women, I have already described in order the eight chief queens headed by Rukmini, and, in turn, their sons as well.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.90.31)
ekaikasyāṁ daśa daśa kṛṣṇo ’jījanad ātmajān yāvatya ātmano bhāryā amogha-gatir īśvaraḥ
Krishna, the Lord whose every effort is unfailing, begot ten sons upon each and every one of His wives.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.90.32)
teṣām uddāma-vīryāṇām aṣṭā-daśa mahā-rathāḥ āsann udāra-yaśasas teṣāṁ nāmāni me śṛṇu
Among those sons of boundless valor, eighteen were mahā-rathas of far-reaching renown. Now hear their names from me.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.90.33)
pradyumnaś cāniruddhaś ca dīptimān bhānur eva ca sāmbo madhur bṛhadbhānuś citrabhānur vṛko ’ruṇaḥ
Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Diptiman, Bhanu, Samba, Madhu, Brihadbhanu, Chitrabhanu, Vrika and Aruna —
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.90.34)
puṣkaro vedabāhuś ca śrutadevaḥ sunandanaḥ citrabāhur virūpaś ca kavir nyagrodha eva ca
Pushkara, Vedabahu, Shrutadeva, Sunandana, Chitrabahu, Virupa, Kavi and Nyagrodha — these were the eighteen mahā-rathas.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.90.35)
eteṣām api rājendra tanu-jānāṁ madhu-dviṣaḥ pradyumna āsīt prathamaḥ pitṛ-vad rukmiṇī-sutaḥ
O foremost of kings, among these sons of Krishna, the enemy of Madhu, the most eminent was Rukmini's son Pradyumna, who resembled his father in every way.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.90.36)
That great warrior married the daughter of Rukmi, and by her was born Aniruddha, endowed with the strength of ten thousand elephants.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.90.37)
sa cāpi rukmiṇaḥ pautrīṁ dauhitro jagṛhe tataḥ vajras tasyābhavad yas tu mauṣalād avaśeṣitaḥ
He, in turn, married Rukmi's own granddaughter, and from her was born Vajra, who would remain among the very few Yadus to survive the battle of the clubs.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.90.38)
pratibāhur abhūt tasmāt subāhus tasya cātmajaḥ subāhoḥ śāntaseno ’bhūc chatasenas tu tat-sutaḥ
From Vajra was born Pratibahu, and his son was Subahu; from Subahu came Shantasena, and Shantasena's son was Shatasena.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.90.39)
na hy etasmin kule jātā adhanā abahu-prajāḥ alpāyuṣo ’lpa-vīryāś ca abrahmaṇyāś ca jajñire
No one ever born in this dynasty was found lacking in wealth or in progeny, nor short-lived, nor weak in valor, nor neglectful of brahminical culture.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.90.40)
yadu-vaṁśa-prasūtānāṁ puṁsāṁ vikhyāta-karmaṇām saṅkhyā na śakyate kartum api varṣāyutair nṛpa
O King, the number of men of renowned deeds born in the Yadu dynasty could not be counted even over thousands upon thousands of years.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.90.41)
tisraḥ koṭyaḥ sahasrāṇām aṣṭāśīti-śatāni ca āsan yadu-kulācāryāḥ kumārāṇām iti śrutam
It is heard that no fewer than three hundred and eighty-eight million teachers were engaged solely in educating the children of the Yadu dynasty.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.90.42)
saṅkhyānaṁ yādavānāṁ kaḥ kariṣyati mahātmanām yatrāyutānām ayuta- lakṣeṇāste sa āhukaḥ
Who indeed could count all those great-souled Yadavas, when King Ugrasena alone was attended by tens of billions of followers?
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.90.43)
devāsurāhava-hatā daiteyā ye su-dāruṇāḥ te cotpannā manuṣyeṣu prajā dṛptā babādhire
Those most fearsome demons, slain in ages past in the wars between the gods and the demons, took birth again among men and, grown arrogant, began to oppress the people.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.90.44)
tan-nigrahāya hariṇā proktā devā yadoḥ kule avatīrṇāḥ kula-śataṁ teṣām ekādhikaṁ nṛpa
O King, to subdue them, Lord Hari commanded the gods to take birth in the Yadu dynasty — they descended, dividing themselves into one hundred and one branches.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.90.45)
teṣāṁ pramāṇaṁ bhagavān prabhutvenābhavad dhariḥ ye cānuvartinas tasya vavṛdhuḥ sarva-yādavāḥ
The Lord Hari, by His very lordship, remained the ultimate authority for them all; and all the Yadavas who followed Him accordingly prospered and flourished.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.90.46)
śayyāsanāṭanālāpa- krīḍā-snānādi-karmasu na viduḥ santam ātmānaṁ vṛṣṇayaḥ kṛṣṇa-cetasaḥ
In lying down, sitting, wandering, conversing, playing, bathing and every other act, the Vrishnis, their consciousness absorbed wholly in Krishna, forgot even their own separate existence.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.90.47)
tīrthaṁ cakre nṛponaṁ yad ajani yaduṣu svaḥ-sarit pāda-śaucaṁ vidviṭ-snigdhāḥ svarūpaṁ yayur ajita-para śrīr yad-arthe ’nya-yatnaḥ yan-nāmāmaṅgala-ghnaṁ śrutam atha gaditaṁ yat-kṛto gotra-dharmaḥ kṛṣṇasyaitan na citraṁ kṣiti-bhara-haraṇaṁ kāla-cakrāyudhasya
The celestial Ganga is a holy place because her waters wash Krishna's feet — yet when the Lord Himself descended among the Yadus, His own glory eclipsed even the Ganga as a place of pilgrimage. Both those who hated Him and those who loved Him attained forms like His own. That unattainable, ever self-satisfied goddess of fortune, for whose favor all others strive, belongs to Him alone. His name, heard or spoken, destroys all inauspiciousness. He Himself established the very traditions followed by the lineages of sages. For Him, whose weapon is the wheel of time itself, is it any wonder at all that He should lift the burden of the earth?
Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.90.48)
jayati jana-nivāso devakī-janma-vādo yadu-vara-pariṣat svair dorbhir asyann adharmam sthira-cara-vṛjina-ghnaḥ su-smita-śrī-mukhena vraja-pura-vanitānāṁ vardhayan kāma-devam
All glory to Him, the refuge of all beings, known as the son of Devaki, who in the assembly of the foremost Yadus casts out unrighteousness with His own mighty arms, who destroys the sins of all creatures moving and unmoving, and who, with His gracious, smiling face, ever deepens the loving longing of the women of Vraja!
Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.90.49)
itthaṁ parasya nija-vartma-rirakṣayātta- līlā-tanos tad-anurūpa-viḍambanāni karmāṇi karma-kaṣaṇāni yadūttamasya śrūyād amuṣya padayor anuvṛttim icchan
Thus, in order to protect His own path, the Supreme Person, Krishna, best of the Yadus, assumed the pastime-form and enacted these deeds befitting His nature — deeds that wear away the bondage of karma. One who desires to follow in His footsteps should hear them.
Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.90.50)
martyas tayānusavam edhitayā mukunda śrīmat-kathā-śravaṇa-kīrtana-cintayaiti tad dhāma dustara-kṛtānta-javāpavargaṁ grāmād vanaṁ kṣiti-bhujo ’pi yayur yad-arthāḥ
By constantly hearing, chanting and meditating upon these beautiful accounts of Mukunda, with ever-growing faith, a mortal being attains that supreme abode of His, where the relentless force of time can never reach — and it is for this very purpose that even kings abandoned their homes and villages and took shelter in the forest.
