The Path of Devotion (Bhakti-yoga)

Chapter 28All chaptersChapter 30

Verse 1 (bhagavata.11.29.1)

śrī-uddhava uvāca su-dustarām imāṁ manye yoga-caryām anātmanaḥ yathāñjasā pumān siddhyet tan me brūhy añjasācyuta

Sri Uddhava said: O Achyuta, I think this practice of yoga is very difficult indeed for one who has not mastered his own self. Please tell me plainly how a person may attain perfection in it with ease.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.11.29.2)

prāyaśaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa yuñjanto yogino manaḥ viṣīdanty asamādhānān mano-nigraha-karśitāḥ

O lotus-eyed one, yogis who strive to control the mind generally grow disheartened when they cannot attain steadiness, and grow weary from the effort of subduing the mind.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.11.29.3)

athāta ānanda-dughaṁ padāmbujaṁ haṁsāḥ śrayerann aravinda-locana sukhaṁ nu viśveśvara yoga-karmabhis tvan-māyayāmī vihatā na māninaḥ

Therefore, O lotus-eyed Lord of the universe, swan-like souls happily take shelter of Your lotus feet, the very source of bliss; but those who take pride in their own yoga and ritual work are undone by Your maya and fail to do so.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.11.29.4)

kiṁ citram acyuta tavaitad aśeṣa-bandho dāseṣv ananya-śaraṇesu yad ātma-sāttvam yo 'rocayat saha mṛgaiḥ svayam īśvarāṇāṁ śrīmat-kirīṭa-taṭa-pīḍita-pāda-pīṭhaḥ

O infallible one, O friend of all, what wonder is it that You show such warmth to servants who have no other shelter but You — You, whose footstool is pressed by the very crowns of great lords, yet who Yourself delighted in the company of monkeys!

Verse 5 (bhagavata.11.29.5)

taṁ tvākhilātma-dayiteśvaram āśritānāṁ sarvārtha-daṁ sva-kṛta-vid visṛjeta ko nu ko vā bhajet kim api vismṛtaye 'nu bhūtyai kiṁ vā bhaven na tava pāda-rajo-juṣāṁ naḥ

Who indeed, knowing what You do, could ever forsake You — the Self of all, the beloved Lord who grants everything to those who take refuge in You? Who would worship anything else, only to end in forgetting You? What indeed is lacking for us who serve the dust of Your feet?

Verse 6 (bhagavata.11.29.6)

naivopayanty apacitiṁ kavayas taveśa brahmāyuṣāpi kṛtam ṛddha-mudaḥ smarantaḥ yo 'ntar bahis tanu-bhṛtām aśubhaṁ vidhunvann ācārya-caittya-vapuṣā sva-gatiṁ vyanakti

O Lord, even with a lifespan equal to Brahma's, the wise, filled with joy remembering all You have done, could never repay their debt to You — You who, sweeping away the impurity of embodied souls both within and without, reveal the way to Yourself through the twin forms of the teacher and the indwelling witness.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.11.29.7)

śrī-śuka uvāca ity uddhavenāty-anurakta-cetasā pṛṣṭo jagat-krīḍanakaḥ sva-śaktibhiḥ gṛhīta-mūrti-traya īśvareśvaro jagāda sa-prema-manohara-smitaḥ

Sri Shukadeva said: Thus questioned by the deeply loving Uddhava, the Lord of lords, who plays with the universe through His own powers and who has taken up the three forms, began to speak, smiling a loving, captivating smile.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.11.29.8)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca hanta te kathayiṣyāmi mama dharmān su-maṅgalān yān śraddhayācaran martyo mṛtyuṁ jayati durjayam

The Blessed Lord said: Very well, I shall tell you of My most auspicious principles of devotion, by practicing which with faith even a mortal conquers death, so hard to conquer.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.11.29.9)

kuryāt sarvāṇi karmāṇi mad-arthaṁ śanakaiḥ smaran mayy arpita-manaś-citto mad-dharmātma-mano-ratiḥ

One should perform all actions for My sake, gently keeping Me in remembrance, offering one's mind and heart to Me, and finding delight for the mind in the practice of devotion to Me.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.11.29.10)

deśān puṇyān āśrayeta mad-bhaktaiḥ sādhubhiḥ śritān devāsura-manuṣyeṣu mad-bhaktācaritāni ca

One should take shelter of holy places inhabited by My saintly devotees, and follow the conduct of My devotees, whether born among gods, demons or men.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.11.29.11)

pṛthak satreṇa vā mahyaṁ parva-yātrā-mahotsavān kārayed gīta-nṛtyādyair mahārāja-vibhūtibhiḥ

Alone or through a collective observance, one should arrange festivals, processions and great celebrations for Me, with song, dance and splendor fit for royalty.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.11.29.12)

mām eva sarva-bhūteṣu bahir antar apāvṛtam īkṣetātmani cātmānaṁ yathā kham amalāśayaḥ

With a pure heart, one should see Me alone — present unveiled, both within and outside every being, and as the very self within the self — just as the sky is present everywhere yet untouched.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.11.29.13)

iti sarvāṇi bhūtāni mad-bhāvena mahā-dyute sabhājayan manyamāno jñānaṁ kevalam āśritaḥ

O radiant Uddhava, one who thus honors all beings, holding this understanding that I dwell within them, is said to have taken refuge in pure knowledge alone.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.11.29.14)

brāhmaṇe pukkase stene brahmaṇye 'rke sphuliṅgake akrūre krūrake caiva sama-dṛk paṇḍito mataḥ

One who looks equally upon the brahmana and the outcaste, upon the thief and the patron of brahminical virtue, upon the sun and a mere spark, upon the gentle and the cruel — such a one is considered truly learned.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.11.29.15)

nareṣv abhīkṣṇaṁ mad-bhāvaṁ puṁso bhāvayato 'cirāt spardhāsūyā-tiraskārāḥ sāhaṅkārā viyanti hi

For the person who constantly cultivates the sense of My presence within others, rivalry, envy, contempt and the pride that feeds them are all soon destroyed.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.11.29.16)

visṛjya smayamānān svān dṛśaṁ vrīḍāṁ ca daihikīm praṇamed daṇḍa-vad bhūmāv ā-śva-cāṇḍāla-go-kharam

Disregarding the mockery of others, and giving up bodily pride and its accompanying shame, one should bow down flat on the ground like a rod — even before a dog, an outcaste, a cow or a donkey.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.11.29.17)

yāvat sarveṣu bhūteṣu mad-bhāvo nopajāyate tāvad evam upāsīta vāṅ-manaḥ-kāya-vṛttibhiḥ

Until this sense of My presence within all beings has fully awakened, one should continue worshiping in this manner, through the actions of speech, mind and body.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.11.29.18)

sarvaṁ brahmātmakaṁ tasya vidyayātma-manīṣayā paripaśyann uparamet sarvato mukta-saṁśayaḥ

Through this knowledge and the discernment of the self, seeing everything as grounded in Brahman, a person becomes free of doubt on every side and finds rest.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.11.29.19)

ayaṁ hi sarva-kalpānāṁ sadhrīcīno mato mama mad-bhāvaḥ sarva-bhūteṣu mano-vāk-kāya-vṛttibhiḥ

This — cultivating the sense of My presence in all beings through the workings of mind, speech and body — is, in My view, the most direct of all methods.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.11.29.20)

na hy aṅgopakrame dhvaṁso mad-dharmasyoddhavāṇv api mayā vyavasitaḥ samyaṅ nirguṇatvād anāśiṣaḥ

My dear Uddhava, this devotion to Me is never lost, not even in the slightest, right from its very beginning — because, established by Me Myself, it is beyond the modes and free of any desire for return.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.11.29.21)

yo yo mayi pare dharmaḥ kalpyate niṣphalāya cet tad-āyāso nirarthaḥ syād bhayāder iva sattama

O best of the virtuous, whatever act of devotion is offered to Me, the Supreme, without hope of reward, that effort is never wasted — unlike ordinary human anxieties such as fear, which achieve nothing.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.11.29.22)

eṣā buddhimatāṁ buddhir manīṣā ca manīṣiṇām yat satyam anṛteneha martyenāpnoti māmṛtam

This is the true wisdom of the wise, the true intelligence of the intelligent — that through this mortal, unreal life itself, a person attains Me, the real, the deathless.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.11.29.23)

eṣa te 'bhihitaḥ kṛtsno brahma-vādasya saṅgrahaḥ samāsa-vyāsa-vidhinā devānām api durgamaḥ

Thus, both in brief and at length, I have told you this complete summary of the teaching on Brahman — a teaching hard to reach even for the gods.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.11.29.24)

abhīkṣṇaśas te gaditaṁ jñānaṁ vispaṣṭa-yuktimat etad vijñāya mucyeta puruṣo naṣṭa-saṁśayaḥ

This clear and reasoned knowledge has been told to you again and again. Understanding it fully, a person becomes free of doubt and attains liberation.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.11.29.25)

su-viviktaṁ tava praśnaṁ mayaitad api dhārayet sanātanaṁ brahma-guhyaṁ paraṁ brahmādhigacchati

Whoever holds fast within his heart to this clear answer I have given to your question attains the eternal, secret Supreme Brahman.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.11.29.26)

ya etan mama bhakteṣu sampradadyāt su-puṣkalam tasyāhaṁ brahma-dāyasya dadāmy ātmānam ātmanā

To one who gives this teaching fully and freely to My devotees, I give My very own self, considering him a giver of Brahman.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.11.29.27)

ya etat samadhīyīta pavitraṁ paramaṁ śuci sa pūyetāhar ahar māṁ jñāna-dīpena darśayan

One who studies this supremely sacred and pure knowledge grows purer day by day, revealing Me to others by the lamp of that knowledge.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.11.29.28)

ya etac chraddhayā nityam avyagraḥ śṛṇuyān naraḥ mayi bhaktiṁ parāṁ kurvan karmabhir na sa badhyate

A person who constantly and attentively listens to this with faith, cultivating supreme devotion to Me, is never bound by the reactions of his works.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.11.29.29)

apy uddhava tvayā brahma sakhe samavadhāritam api te vigato mohaḥ śokaś cāsau mano-bhavaḥ

My dear friend Uddhava, have you now fully grasped this knowledge of Brahman? Has the confusion and grief that arose in your mind now departed?

Verse 30 (bhagavata.11.29.30)

naitat tvayā dāmbhikāya nāstikāya śaṭhāya ca aśuśrūṣor abhaktāya durvinītāya dīyatām

This teaching should never be given by you to the hypocrite, the unbeliever, the deceitful, the unwilling listener, the non-devotee, or the ill-mannered.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.11.29.31)

etair doṣair vihīnāya brahmaṇyāya priyāya ca sādhave śucaye brūyād bhaktiḥ syāc chūdra-yoṣitām

It should be given to one free from these faults — devoted to brahmanical values, dear, saintly and pure. And if devotion is found even among shudras or women, it may be given to them as well.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.11.29.32)

naitad vijñāya jijñāsor jñātavyam avaśiṣyate pītvā pīyūṣam amṛtaṁ pātavyaṁ nāvaśiṣyate

For the seeker who has understood this, nothing further remains to be known — just as, once one has drunk the nectar of immortality, nothing remains left to drink.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.11.29.33)

jñāne karmaṇi yoge ca vārtāyāṁ daṇḍa-dhāraṇe yāvān artho nṛṇāṁ tāta tāvāṁs te 'haṁ catur-vidhaḥ

My dear one, whatever benefit people seek to gain through knowledge, ritual action, yoga, livelihood or the exercise of authority — I Myself, in these four forms, am that very benefit for you.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.11.29.34)

martyo yadā tyakta-samasta-karmā niveditātmā vicikīrṣito me tadāmṛtatvaṁ pratipadyamāno mayātma-bhūyāya ca kalpate vai

When a mortal, having given up all fruitive works and offered himself entirely to Me, desires only to serve Me, he then attains immortality and becomes fit to share My own nature.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.11.29.35)

śrī-śuka uvāca sa evam ādarśita-yoga-mārgas tadottamaḥśloka-vaco niśamya baddhāñjaliḥ prīty-uparuddha-kaṇṭho na kiñcid ūce 'śru-pariplutākṣaḥ

Sri Shukadeva said: Thus, having been shown the path of yoga and having heard these words of the Lord of unfailing praise, Uddhava, hands folded, his throat choked with love, could say nothing, his eyes overflowing with tears.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.11.29.36)

viṣṭabhya cittaṁ praṇayāvaghūrṇaṁ dhairyeṇa rājan bahu-manyamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ prāha yadu-pravīraṁ śīrṣṇā spṛśaṁs tac-caraṇāravindam

O King, steadying his heart, overwhelmed with love, with patience, and holding Him in the deepest regard, Uddhava touched that hero of the Yadus' lotus feet with his head and, hands folded, spoke.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.11.29.37)

śrī-uddhava uvāca vidrāvito moha-mahāndhakāro ya āśrito me tava sannidhānāt vibhāvasoḥ kiṁ nu samīpa-gasya śītaṁ tamo bhīḥ prabhavanty ajādya

Sri Uddhava said: O unborn one, O primeval Lord, the great darkness of delusion that had taken hold of me has been dispelled by Your nearness. Indeed, how can cold, darkness or fear have any power over one who has drawn near a blazing fire?

Verse 38 (bhagavata.11.29.38)

pratyarpito me bhavatānukampinā bhṛtyāya vijñāna-mayaḥ pradīpaḥ hitvā kṛta-jñas tava pāda-mūlaṁ ko 'nyaṁ samīyāc charaṇaṁ tvadīyam

Out of Your compassion, You have restored to me, Your servant, the lamp of true realization. What grateful devotee of Yours could ever leave the shelter of Your feet to seek any other refuge?

Verse 39 (bhagavata.11.29.39)

vṛkṇaś ca me su-dṛḍhaḥ sneha-pāśo dāśārha-vṛṣṇy-andhaka-sātvateṣu prasāritaḥ sṛṣṭi-vivṛddhaye tvayā sva-māyayā hy ātma-subodha-hetinā

The very firm bond of affection that tied me to the Dasharha, Vrishni, Andhaka and Satvata families — a bond which You Yourself, for the growth of creation, had cast over me through Your maya — has now been severed by the weapon of true self-knowledge.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.11.29.40)

namo 'stu te mahā-yogin prapannam anuśādhi mām yathā tvac-caraṇāmbhoje ratiḥ syād anapāyinī

Obeisance to You, O greatest of yogis. Instruct me, surrendered to You, so that my devotion to Your lotus feet may never falter.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.11.29.41)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca gacchoddhava mayādiṣṭo badary-ākhyaṁ mamāśramam tatra mat-pāda-tīrthode snānopasparśanaiḥ śuciḥ

The Blessed Lord said: Go, Uddhava, as I direct you, to My hermitage called Badarikashrama. There, purified by bathing in and touching the sacred waters that spring from My own feet —

Verse 42 (bhagavata.11.29.42)

īkṣayālakanandāyā vidhūtāśeṣa-kalmaṣaḥ vasāno valkalāny aṅga vanya-bhuk sukha-niḥspṛhaḥ

— your every sin washed away by the very sight of the Alakananda, my dear Uddhava, wear garments of bark, live on what the forest naturally provides, and remain content and free of craving;

Verse 43 (bhagavata.11.29.43)

titikṣur dvandva-mātrāṇāṁ suśīlaḥ saṁyatendriyaḥ śāntaḥ samāhita-dhiyā jñāna-vijñāna-saṁyutaḥ

— tolerant of the pairs of opposites such as pleasure and pain, of good conduct, senses restrained, tranquil, of steady mind, and endowed with knowledge and its direct realization —

Verse 44 (bhagavata.11.29.44)

matto 'nuśikṣitaṁ yat te viviktam anubhāvayan mayy āveśita-vāk-citto mad-dharma-nirato bhava ativrajya gatīs tisro mām eṣyasi tataḥ param

— constantly reflecting on this discernment you have learned from Me, your speech and mind absorbed in Me, remain devoted to My worship. Thus, passing beyond the three destinations of the modes, you will in the end come to Me.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.11.29.45)

śrī-śuka uvāca sa evam ukto hari-medhasoddhavaḥ pradakṣiṇaṁ taṁ parisṛtya pādayoḥ śiro nidhāyāśru-kalābhir ārdra-dhīr nyaṣiñcad advandva-paro 'py apakrame

Sri Shukadeva said: Hearing these words of Lord Hari, Uddhava circled Him and placed his head at His feet. Though beyond all worldly dualities, his heart melted, and at that moment of parting he bathed the Lord's feet with his tears.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.11.29.46)

su-dustyaja-sneha-viyoga-kātaro na śaknuvaṁs taṁ parihātum āturaḥ kṛcchraṁ yayau mūrdhani bhartṛ-pāduke bibhran namaskṛtya yayau punaḥ punaḥ

Distraught and anguished at the parting from a love so hard to give up, he could not bring himself to leave. With great difficulty, bearing his Lord's sandals upon his head, bowing again and again, he finally departed.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.11.29.47)

tatas tam antar hṛdi sanniveśya gato mahā-bhāgavato viśālām yathopadiṣṭāṁ jagad-eka-bandhunā tapaḥ samāsthāya harer agād gatim

Then, having enshrined the Lord deep within his heart, the great devotee Uddhava went to Vishala, and, taking up the austerity taught to him by Hari, the sole friend of the universe, he attained the Lord's own supreme abode.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.11.29.48)

ya etad ānanda-samudra-sambhṛtaṁ jñānāmṛtaṁ bhāgavatāya bhāṣitam kṛṣṇena yogeśvara-sevitāṅghriṇā sac-chraddhayāsevya jagad vimucyate

This nectar of knowledge, drawn from an ocean of bliss, was spoken by Sri Krishna — whose feet are served by the very masters of yoga — to His devotee. Whoever in this world attends to it with true faith attains liberation.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.11.29.49)

bhava-bhayam apahantuṁ jñāna-vijñāna-sāraṁ nigama-kṛd upajahre bhṛṅga-vad veda-sāram amṛtam udadhitaś cāpāyayad bhṛtya-vargān puruṣam ṛṣabham ādyaṁ kṛṣṇa-saṁjñaṁ nato 'smi

To dispel the fear of worldly existence, He who is Himself the author of the Vedas gathered, like a bee, this essence of knowledge and realization from the Veda, and gave His servants to drink the nectar drawn from that ocean. I bow to that first of all beings, known as Sri Krishna.
