Skandha 11 · Chapter 30
The Disappearance of the Yadu Dynasty
Verse 1 (bhagavata.11.30.1)
śrī-rājovāca tato mahā-bhāgavata uddhave nirgate vanam dvāravatyāṁ kim akarod bhagavān bhūta-bhāvanaḥ
The King said: After the great devotee Uddhava had departed for the forest, what did the Blessed Lord, the sustainer of all beings, do in Dvaraka?
Verse 2 (bhagavata.11.30.2)
brahma-śāpopasaṁsṛṣṭe sva-kule yādavarṣabhaḥ preyasīṁ sarva-netrāṇāṁ tanuṁ sa katham atyajat
When His own dynasty was overtaken by the curse of the brahmanas, how did that best of the Yadus give up His body — so beloved to the eyes of all?
Verse 3 (bhagavata.11.30.3)
pratyākraṣṭuṁ nayanam abalā yatra lagnaṁ na śekuḥ karṇāviṣṭaṁ na sarati tato yat satām ātma-lagnam yac-chrīr vācāṁ janayati ratiṁ kiṁ nu mānaṁ kavīnāṁ dṛṣṭvā jiṣṇor yudhi ratha-gataṁ yac ca tat-sāmyam īyuḥ
That form, upon which women's eyes, once fixed, could never draw themselves away; which, once lodged in the ears and hearts of the saintly, never departed; whose beauty alone stirs delight in the words of poets — what then of fame? — and which, when seen mounted on Arjuna's chariot in battle, brought the warriors there to a state equal to that very form —
Verse 4 (bhagavata.11.30.4)
śrī ṛṣir uvāca divi bhuvy antarikṣe ca mahotpātān samutthitān dṛṣṭvāsīnān su-dharmāyāṁ kṛṣṇaḥ prāha yadūn idam
Sri Rishi said: Seeing great portents arising in the sky, on the earth and in the atmosphere, Krishna spoke thus to the Yadus seated in the Sudharma assembly hall.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.11.30.5)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca ete ghorā mahotpātā dvārvatyāṁ yama-ketavaḥ muhūrtam api na stheyam atra no yadu-puṅgavāḥ
The Blessed Lord said: O foremost of the Yadus, these terrible, great portents rising in Dvaraka are like the very banners of Death. We must not stay here even a moment longer.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.11.30.6)
striyo bālāś ca vṛddhāś ca śaṅkhoddhāraṁ vrajantv itaḥ vayaṁ prabhāsaṁ yāsyāmo yatra pratyak sarasvatī
Let the women, children and the elderly go from here to Shankhoddhara; we shall go to Prabhasa, where the river Sarasvati flows westward.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.11.30.7)
tatrābhiṣicya śucaya upoṣya su-samāhitāḥ devatāḥ pūjayiṣyāmaḥ snapanālepanārhaṇaiḥ
There, having bathed and purified ourselves, having fasted and steadied our minds, we shall worship the gods with bathing, anointing and other offerings.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.11.30.8)
brāhmaṇāṁs tu mahā-bhāgān kṛta-svastyayanā vayam go-bhū-hiraṇya-vāsobhir gajāśva-ratha-veśmabhiḥ
Then, having had the propitiatory rites performed, we shall present the most fortunate brahmanas with cows, land, gold, garments, elephants, horses, chariots and dwellings.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.11.30.9)
vidhir eṣa hy ariṣṭa-ghno maṅgalāyanam uttamam deva-dvija-gavāṁ pūjā bhūteṣu paramo bhavaḥ
This rite destroys misfortune and is the highest source of auspiciousness, for the worship of gods, brahmanas and cows is the supreme good fortune for all beings.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.11.30.10)
iti sarve samākarṇya yadu-vṛddhā madhu-dviṣaḥ tatheti naubhir uttīrya prabhāsaṁ prayayū rathaiḥ
Hearing these words of the slayer of Madhu, all the elders of the Yadu dynasty said, 'So be it,' and, crossing over by boat, journeyed on by chariot to Prabhasa.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.11.30.11)
tasmin bhagavatādiṣṭaṁ yadu-devena yādavāḥ cakruḥ paramayā bhaktyā sarva-śreyopabṛṁhitam
There, the Yadavas, with the greatest devotion, performed exactly as their Lord had instructed — every rite productive of the highest good.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.11.30.12)
tatas tasmin mahā-pānaṁ papur maireyakaṁ madhu diṣṭa-vibhraṁśita-dhiyo yad-dravair bhraśyate matiḥ
Then, their reason clouded by fate, they drank there in excess the intoxicating maireya liquor, whose very substance overthrows the intellect.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.11.30.13)
mahā-pānābhimattānāṁ vīrāṇāṁ dṛpta-cetasām kṛṣṇa-māyā-vimūḍhānāṁ saṅgharṣaḥ su-mahān abhūt
Among those heroes, intoxicated by excessive drinking, their hearts grown arrogant, and bewildered by Krishna's own maya, a very great quarrel broke out.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.11.30.14)
yuyudhuḥ krodha-saṁrabdhā velāyām ātatāyinaḥ dhanurbhir asibhir bhallair gadābhis tomararṣṭibhiḥ
Enraged, they took up bows, swords, spears, clubs, lances and javelins, and fought one another right there on the shore.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.11.30.15)
patat-patākai ratha-kuñjarādibhiḥ kharoṣṭra-gobhir mahiṣair narair api mithaḥ sametyāśvataraiḥ su-durmadā nyahan śarair dadbhir iva dvipā vane
Mounted on chariots, elephants, donkeys, camels, oxen, buffaloes, men and mules, with flags flying, the fiercely maddened warriors met and struck one another down with arrows, just as elephants in the forest gore each other with their tusks.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.11.30.16)
pradyumna-sāmbau yudhi rūḍha-matsarāv akrūra-bhojāv aniruddha-sātyakī subhadra-saṅgrāmajitau su-dāruṇau gadau sumitrā-surathau samīyatuḥ
Their rivalry now flaring, Pradyumna and Samba met in fierce battle; so did Akrura and Bhoja, Aniruddha and Satyaki, Subhadra and Sangramajit, and the two terrible ones, Sumitra and Suratha, along with the two named Gada.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.11.30.17)
anye ca ye vai niśaṭholmukādayaḥ sahasrajic-chatajid-bhānu-mukhyāḥ anyonyam āsādya madāndha-kāritā jaghnur mukundena vimohitā bhṛśam
Others too — Nishatha, Ulmuka and the rest, along with Sahasrajit, Shatajit, Bhanu and their companions — blinded by intoxication and utterly bewildered by Mukunda, met one another and slew each other.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.11.30.18)
dāśārha-vṛṣṇy-andhaka-bhoja-sātvatā madhv-arbudā māthura-śūrasenāḥ visarjanāḥ kukurāḥ kuntayaś ca mithas tu jaghnuḥ su-visṛjya sauhṛdam
The Dasharhas, Vrishnis, Andhakas, Bhojas, Satvatas, Madhus, Arbudas, Mathuras, Shurasenas, Visarjanas, Kukuras and Kuntis — all, having cast off their friendship entirely, slaughtered one another.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.11.30.19)
putrā ayudhyan pitṛbhir bhrātṛbhiś ca svasrīya-dauhitra-pitṛvya-mātulaiḥ mitrāṇi mitraiḥ suhṛdaḥ suhṛdbhir jñātīṁs tv ahan jñātaya eva mūḍhāḥ
Sons fought fathers, brothers fought brothers, nephews and grandsons fought uncles; friends fought friends, well-wishers fought well-wishers — thus, deluded, kinsmen slew their own kin.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.11.30.20)
śareṣu hīyamāneṣu bhajyamāneṣu dhanvasu śastreṣu kṣīyamāneṣu muṣṭibhir jahrur erakāḥ
When their arrows were spent, their bows broken and their weapons exhausted, they seized reed-stalks in their bare fists.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.11.30.21)
tā vajra-kalpā hy abhavan parighā muṣṭinā bhṛtāḥ jaghnur dviṣas taiḥ kṛṣṇena vāryamāṇās tu taṁ ca te
Once grasped in the fist, those reeds turned into iron rods as hard as thunderbolts; with these they struck down their foes, and even when Krishna sought to restrain them, they struck at Him too.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.11.30.22)
pratyanīkaṁ manyamānā balabhadraṁ ca mohitāḥ hantuṁ kṛta-dhiyo rājann āpannā ātatāyinaḥ
O King, in their delusion they even mistook Balabhadra for an enemy, and, weapons raised, resolved to kill Him, rushed upon Him.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.11.30.23)
atha tāv api saṅkruddhāv udyamya kuru-nandana erakā-muṣṭi-parighau carantau jaghnatur yudhi
O descendant of Kuru, then both of Them, Krishna and Balarama, greatly angered, took up reed-clubs and, moving through the battlefield, struck down the attackers.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.11.30.24)
brahma-śāpopasṛṣṭānāṁ kṛṣṇa-māyāvṛtātmanām spardhā-krodhaḥ kṣayaṁ ninye vaiṇavo 'gnir yathā vanam
The rivalry and rage of those overtaken by the brahmanas' curse, their minds veiled by Krishna's maya, brought them all to destruction — just as a fire born in a bamboo grove consumes the entire forest.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.11.30.25)
evaṁ naṣṭeṣu sarveṣu kuleṣu sveṣu keśavaḥ avatārito bhuvo bhāra iti mene 'vaśeṣitaḥ
Thus, with His entire dynasty destroyed, Keshava, now alone remaining, reflected that the burden of the earth had at last been removed.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.11.30.26)
rāmaḥ samudra-velāyāṁ yogam āsthāya pauruṣam tatyāja lokaṁ mānuṣyaṁ saṁyojyātmānam ātmani
Balarama went to the shore of the ocean, fixed Himself in the yoga of the Supreme Person, and, merging His self within His own self, gave up this mortal world.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.11.30.27)
rāma-niryāṇam ālokya bhagavān devakī-sutaḥ niṣasāda dharopasthe tuṣṇīm āsādya pippalam
Seeing Balarama's departure, the Blessed Lord, son of Devaki, went and sat down silently on the ground beneath a nearby pippala tree.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.11.30.28)
bibhrac catur-bhujaṁ rūpaṁ bhrājiṣṇu prabhayā svayā diśo vitimirāḥ kurvan vidhūma iva pāvakaḥ
Displaying His four-armed form, radiant with His own splendor, dispelling the darkness of every direction like a smokeless fire —
Verse 29 (bhagavata.11.30.29)
śrīvatsāṅkaṁ ghana-śyāmaṁ tapta-hāṭaka-varcasam kauśeyāmbara-yugmena parivītaṁ su-maṅgalam
— bearing the mark of Shrivatsa, dark as a dense rain cloud, His splendor like molten gold, robed in a pair of silk garments, wholly auspicious —
Verse 30 (bhagavata.11.30.30)
sundara-smita-vaktrābjaṁ nīla-kuntala-maṇḍitam puṇḍarīkābhirāmākṣaṁ sphuran makara-kuṇḍalam
— His lotus face graced with a lovely smile, adorned with dark curling locks, His eyes lovely as lotus petals, His shark-shaped earrings gleaming —
Verse 31 (bhagavata.11.30.31)
kaṭi-sūtra-brahma-sūtra- kirīṭa-kaṭakāṅgadaiḥ hāra-nūpura-mudrābhiḥ kaustubhena virājitam
— resplendent with waist-cord, sacred thread, crown, bracelets and armlets, with necklace, anklets, rings and the Kaustubha gem —
Verse 32 (bhagavata.11.30.32)
vana-mālā-parītāṅgaṁ mūrtimadbhir nijāyudhaiḥ kṛtvorau dakṣiṇe pādam āsīnaṁ paṅkajāruṇam
— His body encircled with a forest garland, surrounded by His own weapons in their embodied forms — He sat with His lotus-red left foot resting upon His right thigh.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.11.30.33)
muṣalāvaśeṣāyaḥ-khaṇḍa- kṛteṣur lubdhako jarā mṛgāsyākāraṁ tac-caraṇaṁ vivyādha mṛga-śaṅkayā
A hunter named Jara, his arrow tipped with the last remaining fragment of iron from Samba's club, mistaking that ruddy foot for a deer's face, pierced it, taking it for game.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.11.30.34)
catur-bhujaṁ taṁ puruṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā sa kṛta-kilbiṣaḥ bhītaḥ papāta śirasā pādayor asura-dviṣaḥ
Seeing that he had wronged the four-armed Person, he fell down, frightened, his head at the feet of the enemy of the demons.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.11.30.35)
ajānatā kṛtam idaṁ pāpena madhusūdana kṣantum arhasi pāpasya uttamaḥśloka me 'nagha
'O Madhusudana, this sinful act was done by me in ignorance. O sinless one, O Uttamashloka, please forgive this sinner.'
Verse 36 (bhagavata.11.30.36)
yasyānusmaraṇaṁ nṛṇām ajñāna-dhvānta-nāśanam vadanti tasya te viṣṇo mayāsādhu kṛtaṁ prabho
'O Vishnu, the wise say that remembrance of You alone destroys the darkness of men's ignorance — yet, O Lord, it is against You that I have done this evil deed.'
Verse 37 (bhagavata.11.30.37)
tan māśu jahi vaikuṇṭha pāpmānaṁ mṛga-lubdhakam yathā punar ahaṁ tv evaṁ na kuryāṁ sad-atikramam
'Therefore, O Lord of Vaikuntha, kill me at once, this sinful deer-hunter, so that I may never again commit such an offense against the saintly.'
Verse 38 (bhagavata.11.30.38)
yasyātma-yoga-racitaṁ na vidur viriñco rudrādayo 'sya tanayāḥ patayo girāṁ ye tvan-māyayā pihita-dṛṣṭaya etad añjaḥ kiṁ tasya te vayam asad-gatayo gṛṇīmaḥ
'That which not even Brahma, nor his sons headed by Rudra, nor the great sages who are lords of speech understand — the working of Your own yogic power, their very sight veiled by Your maya — what indeed can I, so lowly born, say of it?'
Verse 39 (bhagavata.11.30.39)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca mā bhair jare tvam uttiṣṭha kāma eṣa kṛto hi me yāhi tvaṁ mad-anujñātaḥ svargaṁ su-kṛtināṁ padam
The Blessed Lord said: Fear not, Jara; rise up. This was indeed My own wish, fulfilled. Go now, with My permission, to heaven, the abode of the righteous.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.11.30.40)
ity ādiṣṭo bhagavatā kṛṣṇenecchā-śarīriṇā triḥ parikramya taṁ natvā vimānena divaṁ yayau
Thus instructed by the Blessed Krishna, whose body is assumed by His own will, he circled the Lord three times, bowed to Him, and journeyed to heaven in a celestial craft.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.11.30.41)
dārukaḥ kṛṣṇa-padavīm anvicchann adhigamya tām vāyuṁ tulasikāmodam āghrāyābhimukhaṁ yayau
Meanwhile Daruka the charioteer, searching for the trail of Krishna, came upon that place; catching the scent of tulasi on the breeze, he made his way toward it.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.11.30.42)
taṁ tatra tigma-dyubhir āyudhair vṛtaṁ hy aśvattha-mūle kṛta-ketanaṁ patim sneha-plutātmā nipapāta pādayo rathād avaplutya sa-bāṣpa-locanaḥ
Seeing his master seated there beneath the ashvattha tree, surrounded by His gleaming weapons, his heart overflowing with love, he leapt down from the chariot and fell at His feet, his eyes filled with tears.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.11.30.43)
apaśyatas tvac-caraṇāmbujaṁ prabho dṛṣṭiḥ praṇaṣṭā tamasi praviṣṭā diśo na jāne na labhe ca śāntiṁ yathā niśāyām uḍupe praṇaṣṭe
'O Lord, not seeing Your lotus feet, my sight has failed and sunk into darkness. I know no direction, and I find no peace — just as on a night when the moon has vanished.'
Verse 44 (bhagavata.11.30.44)
iti bruvati sūte vai ratho garuḍa-lāñchanaḥ kham utpapāta rājendra sāśva-dhvaja udīkṣataḥ
[Sri Shuka continued:] O foremost of kings, even as the charioteer spoke thus, the chariot marked with the emblem of Garuda rose up into the sky, with its horses and its banner, before his very eyes.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.11.30.45)
tam anvagacchan divyāni viṣṇu-praharaṇāni ca tenāti-vismitātmānaṁ sūtam āha janārdanaḥ
The divine weapons of Vishnu, too, rose and followed after it. Then, seeing his utter astonishment, Lord Janardana spoke to His charioteer.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.11.30.46)
gaccha dvāravatīṁ sūta jñātīnāṁ nidhanaṁ mithaḥ saṅkarṣaṇasya niryāṇaṁ bandhubhyo brūhi mad-daśām
'Go, charioteer, to Dvaraka, and tell our kinsmen of the mutual destruction of our family, of Sankarshana's departure, and of My present condition.'
Verse 47 (bhagavata.11.30.47)
dvārakāyāṁ ca na stheyaṁ bhavadbhiś ca sva-bandhubhiḥ mayā tyaktāṁ yadu-purīṁ samudraḥ plāvayiṣyati
'You and your kinsmen should not remain in Dvaraka, for once I have left it, this city of the Yadus will be engulfed by the ocean.'
Verse 48 (bhagavata.11.30.48)
svaṁ svaṁ parigrahaṁ sarve ādāya pitarau ca naḥ arjunenāvitāḥ sarva indraprasthaṁ gamiṣyatha
'Let all of you take your own families, together with My parents, and, under Arjuna's protection, go to Indraprastha.'
Verse 49 (bhagavata.11.30.49)
tvaṁ tu mad-dharmam āsthāya jñāna-niṣṭha upekṣakaḥ man-māyā-racitām etāṁ vijñayopaśamaṁ vraja
'But you should remain established in devotion to Me, fixed in knowledge, indifferent to it all; and, understanding this entire happening to be a working of My own maya, remain at peace.'
