Chapter 10All chaptersChapter 12

Verse 1 (bhagavata.12.11.1)

śrī-śaunaka uvāca athemam arthaṁ pṛcchāmo bhavantaṁ bahu-vittamam samasta-tantra-rāddhānte bhavān bhāgavata tattva-vit

Shri Shaunaka said: We now ask you this question, for you are most learned; O devotee of the Lord, you know the essential truth established at the conclusion of all the tantras.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.12.11.2)

tāntrikāḥ paricaryāyāṁ kevalasya śriyaḥ pateḥ aṅgopāṅgāyudhākalpaṁ kalpayanti yathā ca yaiḥ

In the worship prescribed by the tantras of the one Lord of Shri, how do the followers of that path conceive of His limbs, minor limbs, weapons and ornaments, and by what means?

Verse 3 (bhagavata.12.11.3)

tan no varṇaya bhadraṁ te kriyā-yogaṁ bubhutsatām yena kriyā-naipuṇena martyo yāyād amartyatām

Please describe this to us, who wish to understand — may good fortune attend you — that ritual practice by whose skillful performance a mortal attains immortality.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.12.11.4)

sūta uvāca namaskṛtya gurūn vakṣye vibhūtīr vaiṣṇavīr api yāḥ proktā veda-tantrābhyām ācāryaiḥ padmajādibhiḥ

Suta said: Bowing to my teachers, I shall now describe the Vaishnava opulences as they were taught, by the authority of the Veda and the tantras, by teachers beginning with Brahma, the lotus-born.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.12.11.5)

māyādyair navabhis tattvaiḥ sa vikāra-mayo virāṭ nirmito dṛśyate yatra sa-citke bhuvana-trayam

Formed of the nine transforming principles beginning with maya, that Virat, the cosmic form, becomes visible, and within His conscious body the three worlds are seen.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.12.11.6)

etad vai pauruṣaṁ rūpaṁ bhūḥ pādau dyauḥ śiro nabhaḥ nābhiḥ sūryo ’kṣiṇī nāse vāyuḥ karṇau diśaḥ prabhoḥ

This, indeed, is the form of the Purusha: the earth His feet, heaven His head, the sky His navel, the sun His eyes, the wind His nostrils; the directions are the Lord's ears.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.12.11.7)

prajāpatiḥ prajananam apāno mṛtyur īśituḥ tad-bāhavo loka-pālā manaś candro bhruvau yamaḥ

Prajapati is His organ of generation, death His organ of excretion; the guardians of the worlds are His arms, the moon His mind, and Yama His eyebrows.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.12.11.8)

lajjottaro ’dharo lobho dantā jyotsnā smayo bhramaḥ romāṇi bhūruhā bhūmno meghāḥ puruṣa-mūrdhajāḥ

Shame is His upper lip, greed His lower lip, moonlight His teeth, delusion His smile; the trees of this vast earth are His bodily hairs, and the clouds the hair of His head.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.12.11.9)

yāvān ayaṁ vai puruṣo yāvatyā saṁsthayā mitaḥ tāvān asāv api mahā- puruṣo loka-saṁsthayā

Just as an ordinary man is measured by the dimensions of his own frame, so too is that Mahapurusha measured by the arrangement of the worlds themselves.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.12.11.10)

kaustubha-vyapadeśena svātma-jyotir bibharty ajaḥ tat-prabhā vyāpinī sākṣāt śrīvatsam urasā vibhuḥ

In the guise of the Kaustubha gem the unborn Lord bears His own self-luminous radiance, and that all-pervading effulgence He bears directly upon His chest as the mark of Shrivatsa.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.12.11.11)

sva-māyāṁ vana-mālākhyāṁ nānā-guṇa-mayīṁ dadhat vāsaś chando-mayaṁ pītaṁ brahma-sūtraṁ tri-vṛt svaram

He wears His own maya, composed of the various gunas, in the form of His forest garland; His yellow garment is the Vedic meters, and His sacred thread the threefold syllable Om.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.12.11.12)

bibharti sāṅkhyaṁ yogaṁ ca devo makara-kuṇḍale mauliṁ padaṁ pārameṣṭhyaṁ sarva-lokābhayaṅ-karam

As His two shark-shaped earrings, the Lord bears Sankhya and Yoga; and His crown is the supreme abode of Brahmaloka, which grants fearlessness to all the worlds.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.12.11.13)

avyākṛtam anantākhyam āsanaṁ yad-adhiṣṭhitaḥ dharma-jñānādibhir yuktaṁ sattvaṁ padmam ihocyate

The unmanifest, called Ananta, is the seat upon which He rests; and the lotus, endowed with dharma, jnana and the rest, is here called sattva, the mode of goodness.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.12.11.14)

ojaḥ-saho-bala-yutaṁ mukhya-tattvaṁ gadāṁ dadhat apāṁ tattvaṁ dara-varaṁ tejas-tattvaṁ sudarśanam

The mace He bears is prana, the chief vital principle endowed with vigor, force and strength; His excellent conch is the element water, and His Sudarshana disc the element fire.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.12.11.15)

nabho-nibhaṁ nabhas-tattvam asiṁ carma tamo-mayam kāla-rūpaṁ dhanuḥ śārṅgaṁ tathā karma-mayeṣudhim

His sky-hued sword is the element ether, His shield is composed of tamas; His bow Sharnga is the very form of time, and His quiver is made of karma.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.12.11.16)

indriyāṇi śarān āhur ākūtīr asya syandanam tan-mātrāṇy asyābhivyaktiṁ mudrayārtha-kriyātmatām

His arrows, they say, are the senses; His chariot is the will; the subtle sense-objects are His manifestation, and His hand-gesture is the very essence of purposeful action.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.12.11.17)

maṇḍalaṁ deva-yajanaṁ dīkṣā saṁskāra ātmanaḥ paricaryā bhagavata ātmano durita-kṣayaḥ

The worship-mandala is the place of divine sacrifice; initiation is the sanctifying rite of the self; and service to the Lord is the destruction of the soul's own sins.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.12.11.18)

bhagavān bhaga-śabdārthaṁ līlā-kamalam udvahan dharmaṁ yaśaś ca bhagavāṁś cāmara-vyajane ’bhajat

Playfully bearing a lotus that embodies the meanings of the word 'bhaga,' the Lord accepts the service of two chamara fans, which are dharma and fame.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.12.11.19)

ātapatraṁ tu vaikuṇṭhaṁ dvijā dhāmākuto-bhayam tri-vṛd vedaḥ suparṇākhyo yajñaṁ vahati pūruṣam

O brahmanas, His umbrella is Vaikuntha itself, the abode free of all fear; and Garuda, who bears the sacrificial Lord, is the threefold Veda.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.12.11.20)

anapāyinī bhagavatī śrīḥ sākṣād ātmano hareḥ viṣvaksenas tantra-mūrtir viditaḥ pārṣadādhipaḥ nandādayo ’ṣṭau dvāḥ-sthāś ca te ’ṇimādyā harer guṇāḥ

The ever-unfailing goddess Shri is directly the personification of Hari's own being; Vishvaksena, known as chief of His attendants, is the embodiment of the tantras; and the eight doorkeepers headed by Nanda are Hari's own mystic powers, beginning with anima.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.12.11.21)

vāsudevaḥ saṅkarṣaṇaḥ pradyumnaḥ puruṣaḥ svayam aniruddha iti brahman mūrti-vyūho ’bhidhīyate

Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna — the Purusha Himself — and Aniruddha, O brahmana, are what is called the fourfold expansion of His forms.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.12.11.22)

sa viśvas taijasaḥ prājñas turīya iti vṛttibhiḥ arthendriyāśaya-jñānair bhagavān paribhāvyate

By these functions — Vishva, Taijasa, Prajna, and the fourth, Turiya — corresponding to the object, the senses, the inner faculty and pure knowledge, the Lord is conceived.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.12.11.23)

aṅgopāṅgāyudhākalpair bhagavāṁs tac catuṣṭayam bibharti sma catur-mūrtir bhagavān harir īśvaraḥ

With His limbs, minor limbs, weapons and ornaments, the Lord Hari, the Ishvara, thus bears that fourfold expansion in four distinct forms.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.12.11.24)

dvija-ṛṣabha sa eṣa brahma-yoniḥ svayaṁ-dṛk sva-mahima-paripūrṇo māyayā ca svayaitat sṛjati harati pātīty ākhyayānāvṛtākṣo vivṛta iva niruktas tat-parair ātma-labhyaḥ

O best of brahmanas, this same Lord is the source of the Vedas, self-luminous, perfect in His own glory; through His own maya He creates, destroys and sustains this universe — and though thus spoken of, as if divided by these functions, His true eye remains ever unveiled, and He is attained as the very Self by those devoted to Him.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.12.11.25)

śrī-kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa-sakha vṛṣṇy-ṛṣabhāvani-dhrug- rājanya-vaṁśa-dahanānapavarga-vīrya govinda gopa-vanitā-vraja-bhṛtya-gīta tīrtha-śravaḥ śravaṇa-maṅgala pāhi bhṛtyān

O Shri Krishna, friend of Krishna [Arjuna], foremost of the Vrishnis, You who consumed the kingly lines that oppressed this earth, whose power never wanes! O Govinda, whose sacred glory, sung by the gopis and cowherds and their own servants, is auspicious to hear — protect Your servants.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.12.11.26)

ya idaṁ kalya utthāya mahā-puruṣa-lakṣaṇam tac-cittaḥ prayato japtvā brahma veda guhāśayam

Whoever rises early and, with mind fixed and purified, softly recites this description of the Mahapurusha's characteristics, comes to know that Brahman who dwells hidden in the heart.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.12.11.27)

śrī-śaunaka uvāca śuko yad āha bhagavān viṣṇu-rātāya śṛṇvate sauro gaṇo māsi māsi nānā vasati saptakaḥ

Shri Shaunaka said: What the illustrious Shuka spoke to Vishnurata, who was listening — that in each month a different sevenfold company of the sun-god's retinue dwells —

Verse 28 (bhagavata.12.11.28)

teṣāṁ nāmāni karmāṇi niyuktānām adhīśvaraiḥ brūhi naḥ śraddadhānānāṁ vyūhaṁ sūryātmano hareḥ

— their names and their appointed duties, assigned by their overlords — please tell us, who listen with faith, this arrangement of Hari in His form as the sun.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.12.11.29)

sūta uvāca anādy-avidyayā viṣṇor ātmanaḥ sarva-dehinām nirmito loka-tantro ’yaṁ lokeṣu parivartate

Suta said: Fashioned by the beginningless ignorance belonging to Vishnu, the Self of all embodied beings, this system of the worlds revolves among the worlds.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.12.11.30)

eka eva hi lokānāṁ sūrya ātmādi-kṛd dhariḥ sarva-veda-kriyā-mūlam ṛṣibhir bahudhoditaḥ

The sun is verily the one soul and original creator of the worlds, none other than Hari; the root of all Vedic ritual, he has been described in many ways by the sages.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.12.11.31)

kālo deśaḥ kriyā kartā karaṇaṁ kāryam āgamaḥ dravyaṁ phalam iti brahman navadhokto ’jayā hariḥ

As time, place, action, agent, instrument, effect, scripture, substance, and result — in these nine ways, O brahmana, has Hari, through His unborn energy, been described.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.12.11.32)

madhv-ādiṣu dvādaśasu bhagavān kāla-rūpa-dhṛk loka-tantrāya carati pṛthag dvādaśabhir gaṇaiḥ

Through the twelve months, beginning with Madhu, the Lord, bearing the form of time, moves about with a different set of twelve associates in each, to sustain the order of the worlds.

etā bhagavato viṣṇor ādityasya vibhūtayaḥ smaratāṁ sandhyayor nṝṇāṁ haranty aṁho dine dine

These are the opulent manifestations of Lord Vishnu as the sun; for those who remember them at the two twilights, they remove sin day after day.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.12.11.46)

dvādaśasv api māseṣu devo ’sau ṣaḍbhir asya vai caran samantāt tanute paratreha ca san-matim

Thus in all twelve months, that god, moving about with his six associates in each, spreads pure understanding both in this world and the next.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.12.11.47)

Sixty thousand pure brahmarshis called the Valakhilyas go ahead, facing him, praising that mighty lord with their hymns.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.12.11.50)
