Skandha 3 · Chapter 13

The Appearance of Lord Varaha

Chapter 12All chaptersChapter 14

Verse 1 (bhagavata.3.13.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca niśamya vācaṁ vadato muneḥ puṇyatamāṁ nṛpa bhūyaḥ papraccha kauravyo vāsudeva-kathādṛtaḥ

Śukadeva said: Having heard this most virtuous speech spoken by the sage Maitreya, O King, Vidura, best among the Kurus, revering all talk of Vāsudeva, inquired further.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.3.13.2)

vidura uvāca sa vai svāyambhuvaḥ samrāṭ priyaḥ putraḥ svayambhuvaḥ pratilabhya priyāṁ patnīṁ kiṁ cakāra tato mune

Vidura said: O sage, after obtaining his beloved wife, what then did that dear son of Brahmā, Svāyambhuva Manu, the sovereign, do?

Verse 3 (bhagavata.3.13.3)

caritaṁ tasya rājarṣer ādi-rājasya sattama brūhi me śraddadhānāya viṣvaksenāśrayo hy asau

O most virtuous one, kindly relate to me, who listens with faith, the character of that saintly king, the original king, for he had taken shelter of the Personality of Godhead, Viṣvaksena.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.3.13.4)

śrutasya puṁsāṁ sucira-śramasya nanv añjasā sūribhir īḍito ’rthaḥ tat-tad-guṇānuśravaṇaṁ mukunda- pādāravindaṁ hṛdayeṣu yeṣām

Surely that subject matter, so elaborately explained by pure devotees, is worth the long labor of those engaged in hearing — that hearing again and again of His transcendental qualities, whose lotus feet, of Mukunda, dwell within their hearts.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.3.13.5)

śrī-śuka uvāca iti bruvāṇaṁ viduraṁ vinītaṁ sahasra-śīrṣṇaś caraṇopadhānam prahṛṣṭa-romā bhagavat-kathāyāṁ praṇīyamāno munir abhyacaṣṭa

Śukadeva said: Thus addressed by the humble Vidura, the sage, his hairs standing on end in ecstasy, being drawn ever deeper into words concerning the thousand-headed Personality of Godhead whose feet serve as his pillow, began to speak.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.3.13.6)

maitreya uvāca yadā sva-bhāryayā sārdhaṁ jātaḥ svāyambhuvo manuḥ prāñjaliḥ praṇataś cedaṁ veda-garbham abhāṣata

Maitreya said: When Svāyambhuva Manu, the father of mankind, was born together with his wife, he, with folded hands and bowed in obeisance, addressed the reservoir of Vedic knowledge as follows.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.3.13.7)

tvam ekaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ janma-kṛd vṛttidaḥ pitā tathāpi naḥ prajānāṁ te śuśrūṣā kena vā bhavet

You alone are the progenitor and the sustainer of all living beings, our father; yet by what means may we, who are born of you, render service unto you?

Verse 8 (bhagavata.3.13.8)

tad vidhehi namas tubhyaṁ karmasv īḍyātma-śaktiṣu yat kṛtveha yaśo viṣvag amutra ca bhaved gatiḥ

Kindly direct us, unto whom I offer obeisances, O worshipable one, in such duties as lie within our own power, performing which one may attain fame here in this world and a good end in the next.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.3.13.9)

brahmovāca prītas tubhyam ahaṁ tāta svasti stād vāṁ kṣitīśvara yan nirvyalīkena hṛdā śādhi mety ātmanārpitam

Brahmā said: I am pleased with you, my dear son; may all blessing be upon you both, O lord of the world, for with an unreserved heart you have surrendered yourself, saying, 'Instruct me.'

Verse 10 (bhagavata.3.13.10)

etāvaty ātmajair vīra kāryā hy apacitir gurau śaktyāpramattair gṛhyeta sādaraṁ gata-matsaraiḥ

O hero, just such worship as this should offspring render unto their superior — accepted with delight, full capacity, and freedom from envy, by those who are sane and vigilant.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.3.13.11)

sa tvam asyām apatyāni sadṛśāny ātmano guṇaiḥ utpādya śāsa dharmeṇa gāṁ yajñaiḥ puruṣaṁ yaja

You, therefore, having begotten in her children endowed with qualities like your own, rule the earth according to religious principles, and worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead through sacrifices.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.3.13.12)

paraṁ śuśrūṣaṇaṁ mahyaṁ syāt prajā-rakṣayā nṛpa bhagavāṁs te prajā-bhartur hṛṣīkeśo ’nutuṣyati

The highest service unto me, O King, would be your protection of the living beings born into the world; the Personality of Godhead, Hṛṣīkeśa, is satisfied with you, the protector of your subjects.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.3.13.13)

yeṣāṁ na tuṣṭo bhagavān yajña-liṅgo janārdanaḥ teṣāṁ śramo hy apārthāya yad ātmā nādṛtaḥ svayam

Those with whom the Personality of Godhead Janārdana, who takes the form of sacrifice, is not satisfied — their labor is fruitless indeed, since they have failed to honor their own Supreme Soul.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.3.13.14)

manur uvāca ādeśe ’haṁ bhagavato varteyāmīva-sūdana sthānaṁ tv ihānujānīhi prajānāṁ mama ca prabho

Manu said: O destroyer of all sins, I shall abide by your command; but, O lord, kindly let me know where in this world I and my subjects are to dwell.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.3.13.15)

yad okaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ mahī magnā mahāmbhasi asyā uddharaṇe yatno deva devyā vidhīyatām

Since the earth, the dwelling place of all living beings, lies submerged in the great waters, O master of the demigods, let some effort be made toward the lifting up of this goddess.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.3.13.16)

maitreya uvāca parameṣṭhī tv apāṁ madhye tathā sannām avekṣya gām katham enāṁ samunneṣya iti dadhyau dhiyā ciram

Maitreya said: Beholding the earth thus lying submerged within the waters, Brahmā, the supreme one, pondered for a long time with his intelligence: How shall I lift her up?

Verse 17 (bhagavata.3.13.17)

sṛjato me kṣitir vārbhiḥ plāvyamānā rasāṁ gatā athātra kim anuṣṭheyam asmābhiḥ sarga-yojitaiḥ yasyāhaṁ hṛdayād āsaṁ sa īśo vidadhātu me

While I was engaged in creation, the earth, inundated by the waters, sank into the depths; what, then, should we do, we who are engaged in the task of creation? May that Lord, from whose heart I myself was born, direct me.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.3.13.18)

ity abhidhyāyato nāsā- vivarāt sahasānagha varāha-toko niragād aṅguṣṭha-parimāṇakaḥ

As he thought thus, O sinless one, suddenly from his nostril there emerged a tiny form of Varāha, no larger than the tip of a thumb.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.3.13.19)

tasyābhipaśyataḥ kha-sthaḥ kṣaṇena kila bhārata gaja-mātraḥ pravavṛdhe tad adbhutam abhūn mahat

While he watched, that form, situated in the sky, suddenly in a moment expanded, O descendant of Bharata, growing to the size of an elephant — a great and wondrous transformation.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.3.13.20)

marīci-pramukhair vipraiḥ kumārair manunā saha dṛṣṭvā tat saukaraṁ rūpaṁ tarkayām āsa citradhā

Seeing that boar-like form, the brāhmaṇas headed by Marīci, together with the Kumāras and Manu, began to argue among themselves in various ways.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.3.13.21)

kim etat sūkara-vyājaṁ sattvaṁ divyam avasthitam aho batāścaryam idaṁ nāsāyā me viniḥsṛtam

What is this — a wondrous being of divine nature, situated under the guise of a boar? Oh, how strange indeed that it has emerged from my very nostril!

Verse 22 (bhagavata.3.13.22)

dṛṣṭo ’ṅguṣṭha-śiro-mātraḥ kṣaṇād gaṇḍa-śilā-samaḥ api svid bhagavān eṣa yajño me khedayan manaḥ

Seen but a moment ago no bigger than the tip of a thumb, in an instant it has become like a huge boulder; could it be the Personality of Godhead, Yajña Himself, whose presence now perturbs my mind?

Verse 23 (bhagavata.3.13.23)

iti mīmāṁsatas tasya brahmaṇaḥ saha sūnubhiḥ bhagavān yajña-puruṣo jagarjāgendra-sannibhaḥ

While Brahmā, along with his sons, was thus deliberating, the Personality of Godhead Yajña resounded like a great mountain.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.3.13.24)

brahmāṇaṁ harṣayām āsa haris tāṁś ca dvijottamān sva-garjitena kakubhaḥ pratisvanayatā vibhuḥ

The omnipotent Lord Hari, by His own roar which echoed through all directions, gladdened the heart of Brahmā and those most elevated brāhmaṇas.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.3.13.25)

niśamya te ghargharitaṁ sva-kheda- kṣayiṣṇu māyāmaya-sūkarasya janas-tapaḥ-satya-nivāsinas te tribhiḥ pavitrair munayo ’gṛṇan sma

Hearing that tumultuous roar of the all-merciful Lord in His mystic boar-form — a roar that destroys the sorrow of those who hear it — the sages dwelling on Janaloka, Tapoloka and Satyaloka chanted the three sacred Vedas.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.3.13.26)

teṣāṁ satāṁ veda-vitāna-mūrtir brahmāvadhāryātma-guṇānuvādam vinadya bhūyo vibudhodayāya gajendra-līlo jalam āviveśa

Knowing this to be the form that expands the Vedas, Brahmā again resounded that transcendental glorification of Himself for the upliftment of the learned, and then, sporting like a lordly elephant, entered the water.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.3.13.27)

utkṣipta-vālaḥ kha-caraḥ kaṭhoraḥ saṭā vidhunvan khara-romaśa-tvak khurāhatābhraḥ sita-daṁṣṭra īkṣā- jyotir babhāse bhagavān mahīdhraḥ

With tail lashing in the sky, hard bristling mane quivering, skin rough and thickly haired, clouds struck by His hooves, white tusks gleaming — the Personality of Godhead, the supporter of the world, shone with a luminous glance.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.3.13.28)

ghrāṇena pṛthvyāḥ padavīṁ vijighran kroḍāpadeśaḥ svayam adhvarāṅgaḥ karāla-daṁṣṭro ’py akarāla-dṛgbhyām udvīkṣya viprān gṛṇato ’viśat kam

Searching for the earth's whereabouts with His sense of smell, He whose form, though assuming the guise of a boar, was itself transcendental, His tusks fearsome yet His glance gentle, looked upon the brāhmaṇas offering prayers and entered the water.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.3.13.29)

sa vajra-kūṭāṅga-nipāta-vega- viśīrṇa-kukṣiḥ stanayann udanvān utsṛṣṭa-dīrghormi-bhujair ivārtaś cukrośa yajñeśvara pāhi meti

That ocean, its depths split apart by the force of His diving, His body like a mass of thunderbolts, resounded as though in distress, its long waves thrown up like arms, crying out: O Lord of sacrifice, protect me!

Verse 30 (bhagavata.3.13.30)

khuraiḥ kṣuraprair darayaṁs tad āpa utpāra-pāraṁ tri-parū rasāyām dadarśa gāṁ tatra suṣupsur agre yāṁ jīva-dhānīṁ svayam abhyadhatta

Splitting that water with His razor-sharp hooves, He, the master of all sacrifice, reached the very limit of that unlimited expanse, and there, in the beginning, found the earth lying — she who is herself the resting place of all living beings — and personally raised her up.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.3.13.31)

sva-daṁṣṭrayoddhṛtya mahīṁ nimagnāṁ sa utthitaḥ saṁruruce rasāyāḥ tatrāpi daityaṁ gadayāpatantaṁ sunābha-sandīpita-tīvra-manyuḥ

Having lifted the submerged earth on His own tusks, He rose splendidly from the waters; and there, His fierce anger blazing like His own discus, He faced a demon rushing toward Him, club in hand.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.3.13.32)

jaghāna rundhānam asahya-vikramaṁ sa līlayebhaṁ mṛgarāḍ ivāmbhasi tad-rakta-paṅkāṅkita-gaṇḍa-tuṇḍo yathā gajendro jagatīṁ vibhindan

He effortlessly slew that obstructing enemy, of unbearable prowess, as a lion slays an elephant in the water; His cheeks and tusks smeared with that demon's blood, He dug into the earth like a lordly elephant.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.3.13.33)

tamāla-nīlaṁ sita-danta-koṭyā kṣmām utkṣipantaṁ gaja-līlayāṅga prajñāya baddhāñjalayo ’nuvākair viriñci-mukhyā upatasthur īśam

O Vidura, seeing Him — dark blue like the tamāla tree, balancing the earth upon the curved edge of His white tusks, playing like an elephant — Brahmā and the others, headed by Viriñci, folded their hands and offered prayers to the Lord with Vedic hymns.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.3.13.34)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ jitaṁ jitaṁ te ’jita yajña-bhāvana trayīṁ tanuṁ svāṁ paridhunvate namaḥ yad-roma-garteṣu nililyur addhayas tasmai namaḥ kāraṇa-sūkarāya te

The sages said: All glory, all victory unto You, O unconquerable one, who are realized through the performance of sacrifice! Obeisances unto You, who shake Your own body, the personified Vedas, in whose bodily pores the very oceans lie submerged — obeisances unto You, the boar assumed for a purpose.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.3.13.35)

rūpaṁ tavaitan nanu duṣkṛtātmanāṁ durdarśanaṁ deva yad adhvarātmakam chandāṁsi yasya tvaci barhi-romasv ājyaṁ dṛśi tv aṅghriṣu cātur-hotram

This form of Yours, O Lord, is indeed difficult for sinful souls to behold, being itself of the very nature of sacrifice — the Vedic hymns reside in Your skin, the sacred kuśa grass in Your body-hairs, the clarified butter in Your eyes, and the four kinds of sacrificial rites in Your legs.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.3.13.36)

srak tuṇḍa āsīt sruva īśa nāsayor iḍodare camasāḥ karṇa-randhre prāśitram āsye grasane grahās tu te yac carvaṇaṁ te bhagavann agni-hotram

The sacrificial plate rests upon Your tongue, O Lord, the sruva-ladle in Your nostrils, the iḍā-vessel in Your belly, the camasa-cups in the holes of Your ears, the prāśitra-plate in Your mouth, and the soma-vessels in Your throat — that chewing of Yours, O Lord, is Your very oblation into the sacrificial fire.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.3.13.37)

dīkṣānujanmopasadaḥ śirodharaṁ tvaṁ prāyaṇīyodayanīya-daṁṣṭraḥ jihvā pravargyas tava śīrṣakaṁ kratoḥ satyāvasathyaṁ citayo ’savo hi te

Initiation and its consequent rebirths are Your upasad rites, and Your neck; the prāyaṇīya and udayanīya offerings are Your tusks; the pravargya rite is Your tongue; the head of the sacrifice is Your own head; the satya and āvasathya fires, and the aggregate of all desired ends, are Your very life-breaths.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.3.13.38)

somas tu retaḥ savanāny avasthitiḥ saṁsthā-vibhedās tava deva dhātavaḥ satrāṇi sarvāṇi śarīra-sandhis tvaṁ sarva-yajña-kratur iṣṭi-bandhanaḥ

The soma sacrifice is Your seed, O Lord; the morning rites are Your bodily posture; the seven varieties of sacrifice are the constituents of Your body; the twelve-day satra sacrifices are the joints of Your body; You are the totality of all sacrifice, bound to the ultimate purpose of every offering.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.3.13.39)

namo namas te ’khila-mantra-devatā- dravyāya sarva-kratave kriyātmane vairāgya-bhaktyātmajayānubhāvita- jñānāya vidyā-gurave namo namaḥ

Obeisances, obeisances unto You, who are the very substance of all mantras and deities, worshipable through every kind of sacrifice, the very form of ritual action; obeisances, obeisances unto You, the supreme teacher of knowledge, realized through renunciation, devotion and the conquest of one's own mind.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.3.13.40)

daṁṣṭrāgra-koṭyā bhagavaṁs tvayā dhṛtā virājate bhūdhara bhūḥ sa-bhūdharā yathā vanān niḥsarato datā dhṛtā mataṅ-gajendrasya sa-patra-padminī

O Lord, O upholder of the earth, sustained upon the edges of Your tusks, the earth together with her mountains shines forth resplendent — just as, when a maddened elephant emerges from a forest lake, a lotus, its leaves intact, held upon its tusk, shines forth.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.3.13.41)

trayīmayaṁ rūpam idaṁ ca saukaraṁ bhū-maṇḍalenātha datā dhṛtena te cakāsti śṛṅgoḍha-ghanena bhūyasā kulācalendrasya yathaiva vibhramaḥ

This form of Yours, the personified Vedas in the shape of a boar, sustained upon the earth held upon Your tusk, shines with even greater splendor — just as the peak of the king of great mountains, bearing the weight of the clouds, appears in its own majesty.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.3.13.42)

saṁsthāpayaināṁ jagatāṁ sa-tasthuṣāṁ lokāya patnīm asi mātaraṁ pitā vidhema cāsyai namasā saha tvayā yasyāṁ sva-tejo ’gnim ivāraṇāv adhāḥ

Restore this earth to her place, for the dwelling of all beings, moving and unmoving; You are her father, and are the mother too; with You we offer our obeisances unto her, in whom, as in the araṇi wood, You have placed Your own fiery potency.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.3.13.43)

kaḥ śraddadhītānyatamas tava prabho rasāṁ gatāyā bhuva udvibarhaṇam na vismayo ’sau tvayi viśva-vismaye yo māyayedaṁ sasṛje ’tivismayam

Who else, O Lord, could dare undertake the deliverance of the earth, sunk within the waters, save only You? Yet this is no wonder in You, for You are Yourself the wonder of the universe, who by Your own potency created this creation, which surpasses all wonder.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.3.13.44)

vidhunvatā vedamayaṁ nijaṁ vapur janas-tapaḥ-satya-nivāsino vayam saṭā-śikhoddhūta-śivāmbu-bindubhir vimṛjyamānā bhṛśam īśa pāvitāḥ

We, the residents of Janaloka, Tapoloka and Satyaloka, as You shake this Your own body of personified Veda, are being thoroughly purified, O Lord, sprinkled by the drops of auspicious water flung from the tips of Your mane.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.3.13.45)

sa vai bata bhraṣṭa-matis tavaiṣate yaḥ karmaṇāṁ pāram apāra-karmaṇaḥ yad-yoga-māyā-guṇa-yoga-mohitaṁ viśvaṁ samastaṁ bhagavan vidhehi śam

Alas, whoever desires anything from You other than Yourself is indeed lost in judgment — from You, whose activities are unlimited, and whose own limit no activity can measure; by whose modes of mystic potency this entire universe lies bewildered, O Personality of Godhead, kindly bestow good fortune upon it.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.3.13.46)

maitreya uvāca ity upasthīyamāno ’sau munibhir brahma-vādibhiḥ salile sva-khurākrānta upādhattāvitāvanim

Maitreya said: Thus being praised by the sages, the transcendentalists, that Lord Boar, His hoof still touching the water, gently set down the earth, He the maintainer of all.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.3.13.47)

sa itthaṁ bhagavān urvīṁ viṣvaksenaḥ prajāpatiḥ rasāyā līlayonnītām apsu nyasya yayau hariḥ

Thus the Personality of Godhead, Viṣvaksena, the Lord of all beings, having easily raised the earth from within the waters, placed her upon the surface of the water and, He, Hari, returned to His own abode.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.3.13.48)

ya evam etāṁ hari-medhaso hareḥ kathāṁ subhadrāṁ kathanīya-māyinaḥ śṛṇvīta bhaktyā śravayeta vośatīṁ janārdano ’syāśu hṛdi prasīdati

Whoever hears with devotion, or causes others to hear, this most auspicious and pleasing narration of Hari, the merciful one by His own potency, who destroys the material bondage of His devotees — within his heart Janārdana becomes swiftly pleased.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.3.13.49)

tasmin prasanne sakalāśiṣāṁ prabhau kiṁ durlabhaṁ tābhir alaṁ lavātmabhiḥ ananya-dṛṣṭyā bhajatāṁ guhāśayaḥ svayaṁ vidhatte sva-gatiṁ paraḥ parām

When that Lord, the bestower of every blessing, becomes pleased, what remains difficult to obtain? Away with those trifling, insignificant gains — for the Supreme, who dwells within the heart, personally grants His own supreme, transcendental abode to those who worship Him with undivided vision.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.3.13.50)

ko nāma loke puruṣārtha-sāravit purā-kathānāṁ bhagavat-kathā-sudhām āpīya karṇāñjalibhir bhavāpahām aho virajyeta vinā naretaram

Who indeed in this world, who knows the true essence of life's goals, having drunk with the cupped hands of his ears the nectar of narrations concerning the Personality of Godhead, chief among all ancient histories — a nectar that destroys material existence — could, alas, remain indifferent, unless he be something other than human?
