Pregnancy of Diti in the Evening

Chapter 13All chaptersChapter 15

Verse 1 (bhagavata.3.14.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca niśamya kauṣāraviṇopavarṇitāṁ hareḥ kathāṁ kāraṇa-sūkarātmanaḥ punaḥ sa papraccha tam udyatāñjalir na cātitṛpto viduro dhṛta-vrataḥ

Śukadeva said: Having heard from the sage Maitreya this narration of Hari in His boar-incarnation and its cause, Vidura, still not fully satisfied and firm in his vow, again inquired of him with folded hands.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.3.14.2)

vidura uvāca tenaiva tu muni-śreṣṭha hariṇā yajña-mūrtinā ādi-daityo hiraṇyākṣo hata ity anuśuśruma

Vidura said: O chief among sages, we have heard in succession that by that very Hari, in the form of sacrifice, the original demon Hiraṇyākṣa was slain.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.3.14.3)

tasya coddharataḥ kṣauṇīṁ sva-daṁṣṭrāgreṇa līlayā daitya-rājasya ca brahman kasmād dhetor abhūn mṛdhaḥ

O brāhmaṇa, while He, in His pastime, was lifting the earth upon the edge of His tusk, for what reason did the battle with that king of demons come about?

Verse 4 (bhagavata.3.14.4)

śraddadhānāya bhaktāya brūhi taj-janma-vistaram ṛṣe na tṛpyati manaḥ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me

Kindly relate in detail his birth to me, who am faithful and devoted; O sage, my mind is not satisfied — my curiosity is indeed very great.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.3.14.5)

maitreya uvāca sādhu vīra tvayā pṛṣṭam avatāra-kathāṁ hareḥ yat tvaṁ pṛcchasi martyānāṁ mṛtyu-pāśa-viśātanīm

Maitreya said: Well asked, O warrior — for you inquire of that narration of the Lord's incarnation which severs the very noose of death binding all mortal beings.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.3.14.6)

yayottānapadaḥ putro muninā gītayārbhakaḥ mṛtyoḥ kṛtvaiva mūrdhny aṅghrim āruroha hareḥ padam

By which narration the son of King Uttānapāda, while yet a child, being sung to by the sage, placed his foot upon the head of Death itself and ascended to the abode of Hari.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.3.14.7)

athātrāpītihāso ’yaṁ śruto me varṇitaḥ purā brahmaṇā deva-devena devānām anupṛcchatām

Now, in this connection, there is also this history, which I heard long ago as it was related by Brahmā, the foremost of the demigods, when the demigods questioned him.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.3.14.8)

ditir dākṣāyaṇī kṣattar mārīcaṁ kaśyapaṁ patim apatya-kāmā cakame sandhyāyāṁ hṛc-chayārditā

O Vidura, Diti, the daughter of Dakṣa, distressed by sexual desire in her heart, in the evening longed for her husband Kaśyapa, the son of Marīci, desiring a child.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.3.14.9)

iṣṭvāgni-jihvaṁ payasā puruṣaṁ yajuṣāṁ patim nimlocaty arka āsīnam agny-agāre samāhitam

She approached him while, having worshiped with oblations of milk the Supreme Person whose tongue is fire, the master of all sacrifices, he sat completely absorbed in trance in the sacrificial hall, as the sun was setting.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.3.14.10)

ditir uvāca eṣa māṁ tvat-kṛte vidvan kāma ātta-śarāsanaḥ dunoti dīnāṁ vikramya rambhām iva mataṅgajaḥ

Diti said: O learned one, this Cupid, bow in hand, torments poor me for your sake, attacking me as a maddened elephant attacks a plantain tree.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.3.14.11)

tad bhavān dahyamānāyāṁ sa-patnīnāṁ samṛddhibhiḥ prajāvatīnāṁ bhadraṁ te mayy āyuṅktām anugraham

Therefore, may you, while I burn with envy at the prosperity of my co-wives who have children, bestow your favor upon me — may all good come to you.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.3.14.12)

bhartary āptorumānānāṁ lokān āviśate yaśaḥ patir bhavad-vidho yāsāṁ prajayā nanu jāyate

For a husband whose wife is beloved and greatly esteemed, fame spreads through the world; and such a husband as your good self surely expands through his own progeny.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.3.14.13)

purā pitā no bhagavān dakṣo duhitṛ-vatsalaḥ kaṁ vṛṇīta varaṁ vatsā ity apṛcchata naḥ pṛthak

Long ago our father, the glorious Dakṣa, affectionate toward his daughters, asked each of us separately: My children, whom do you choose as your husband?

Verse 14 (bhagavata.3.14.14)

sa viditvātmajānāṁ no bhāvaṁ santāna-bhāvanaḥ trayodaśādadāt tāsāṁ yās te śīlam anuvratāḥ

Understanding our inclination, he, the well-wisher of his progeny, gave thirteen of us, all faithful to your character, unto you.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.3.14.15)

atha me kuru kalyāṇaṁ kāmaṁ kamala-locana ārtopasarpaṇaṁ bhūmann amoghaṁ hi mahīyasi

Therefore, O lotus-eyed one, fulfill this desire of mine as a blessing; O great one, the approach of the distressed to one so great never goes in vain.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.3.14.16)

iti tāṁ vīra mārīcaḥ kṛpaṇāṁ bahu-bhāṣiṇīm pratyāhānunayan vācā pravṛddhānaṅga-kaśmalām

O warrior, Marīci's son Kaśyapa thus replied to that pitiable, much-talking wife, whose senses were violently agitated by growing lust, pacifying her with these words.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.3.14.17)

eṣa te ’haṁ vidhāsyāmi priyaṁ bhīru yad icchasi tasyāḥ kāmaṁ na kaḥ kuryāt siddhis traivargikī yataḥ

O timid one, I shall certainly fulfill this dear wish of yours; who indeed would not fulfill the desire of her from whom the threefold perfection of life proceeds?

Verse 18 (bhagavata.3.14.18)

sarvāśramān upādāya svāśrameṇa kalatravān vyasanārṇavam atyeti jala-yānair yathārṇavam

Fulfilling all the āśramas through his own order of life, a man with a wife crosses over the perilous ocean of material existence, just as one crosses the ocean by seafaring vessels.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.3.14.19)

yām āhur ātmano hy ardhaṁ śreyas-kāmasya mānini yasyāṁ sva-dhuram adhyasya pumāṁś carati vijvaraḥ

O honored one, she who is said to be half of a man's own self, desirous of his welfare — entrusting all his responsibilities to whom, a man moves through life free of anxiety.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.3.14.20)

yām āśrityendriyārātīn durjayān itarāśramaiḥ vayaṁ jayema helābhir dasyūn durga-patir yathā

Taking shelter of whom, we can, more easily than those in other āśramas, conquer the senses — those enemies so difficult to overcome — just as a fort commander easily conquers invading plunderers.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.3.14.21)

na vayaṁ prabhavas tāṁ tvām anukartuṁ gṛheśvari apy āyuṣā vā kārtsnyena ye cānye guṇa-gṛdhnavaḥ

O mistress of my home, we are not capable of repaying you in kind, even with an entire lifetime — nor indeed are others who can truly appreciate such qualities as yours.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.3.14.22)

athāpi kāmam etaṁ te prajātyai karavāṇy alam yathā māṁ nātirocanti muhūrtaṁ pratipālaya

Even so, let me fulfill this desire of yours for the sake of progeny, without delay, but wait just a moment, so that they may not find cause to reproach me.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.3.14.23)

eṣā ghoratamā velā ghorāṇāṁ ghora-darśanā caranti yasyāṁ bhūtāni bhūteśānucarāṇi ha

This is the most horrible of all hours, when beings of horrible and dreadful appearance move about — the constant companions of the lord of ghosts himself.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.3.14.24)

etasyāṁ sādhvi sandhyāyāṁ bhagavān bhūta-bhāvanaḥ parīto bhūta-parṣadbhir vṛṣeṇāṭati bhūtarāṭ

At this very evening hour, the Personality of Godhead, the well-wisher of all beings, the king of ghosts himself, surrounded by his ghostly companions, wanders about mounted upon his bull.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.3.14.25)

śmaśāna-cakrānila-dhūli-dhūmra- vikīrṇa-vidyota-jaṭā-kalāpaḥ bhasmāvaguṇṭhāmala-rukma-deho devas tribhiḥ paśyati devaras te

His matted locks scattered and grey with the whirling dust of the cremation ground, his stainless reddish body smeared with ashes — that god of three eyes, O sister-in-law, watches you now.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.3.14.26)

na yasya loke sva-janaḥ paro vā nātyādṛto nota kaścid vigarhyaḥ vayaṁ vratair yac-caraṇāpaviddhām āśāsmahe ’jāṁ bata bhukta-bhogām

For whom, in all the world, none is kin and none a stranger, none especially favored and none reproachable — it is at whose feet, cast off though we are by our own vows, we still reverently seek, O wonder, the very remnants he has enjoyed.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.3.14.27)

yasyānavadyācaritaṁ manīṣiṇo gṛṇanty avidyā-paṭalaṁ bibhitsavaḥ nirasta-sāmyātiśayo ’pi yat svayaṁ piśāca-caryām acarad gatiḥ satām

Whose unimpeachable conduct even the great sages, desiring to dismantle the mass of ignorance, extol — though his own greatness admits no equal, he himself performed acts resembling those of a ghost, he who is the very refuge of the saintly.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.3.14.28)

hasanti yasyācaritaṁ hi durbhagāḥ svātman-ratasyāviduṣaḥ samīhitam yair vastra-mālyābharaṇānulepanaiḥ śva-bhojanaṁ svātmatayopalālitam

The unfortunate, ignorant of his true purpose, laugh at his conduct, he who is absorbed only in his own self — those who fondle, as though it were their very self, this body meant only for the dogs to eat, with garments, garlands, ornaments and unguents.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.3.14.29)

brahmādayo yat-kṛta-setu-pālā yat-kāraṇaṁ viśvam idaṁ ca māyā ājñā-karī yasya piśāca-caryā aho vibhūmnaś caritaṁ viḍambanam

He whose observance of religious rites is guarded even by demigods such as Brahmā, from whom this universe and its material energy themselves arise, whose order even that devilish conduct itself obeys — alas, such is the character of the great, mere imitation though it seems.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.3.14.30)

maitreya uvāca saivaṁ saṁvidite bhartrā manmathonmathitendriyā jagrāha vāso brahmarṣer vṛṣalīva gata-trapā

Maitreya said: Even so informed by her husband, she, her senses churned by Cupid, caught hold of the garment of that great brāhmaṇa sage, shamelessly, like a common woman of the street.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.3.14.31)

sa viditvātha bhāryāyās taṁ nirbandhaṁ vikarmaṇi natvā diṣṭāya rahasi tayāthopaviveśa hi

Understanding then his wife's insistence upon this forbidden act, he, offering obeisances unto inevitable fate, thereupon lay with her in a secluded place.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.3.14.32)

athopaspṛśya salilaṁ prāṇān āyamya vāg-yataḥ dhyāyañ jajāpa virajaṁ brahma jyotiḥ sanātanam

Thereafter, touching water in purification, controlling his breath, restraining his speech, meditating, he silently chanted the eternal, pure Vedic Brahman hymn of effulgence.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.3.14.33)

ditis tu vrīḍitā tena karmāvadyena bhārata upasaṅgamya viprarṣim adho-mukhy abhyabhāṣata

But Diti, O descendant of Bharata, ashamed at that faulty act, approaching the brāhmaṇa sage with her face lowered, spoke to him thus.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.3.14.34)

ditir uvāca na me garbham imaṁ brahman bhūtānām ṛṣabho ’vadhīt rudraḥ patir hi bhūtānāṁ yasyākaravam aṁhasam

Diti said: O brāhmaṇa, may Rudra, the noblest of all beings, the lord of all creatures, whom I have surely offended, not slay this child within my womb.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.3.14.35)

namo rudrāya mahate devāyogrāya mīḍhuṣe śivāya nyasta-daṇḍāya dhṛta-daṇḍāya manyave

Obeisances unto the great Rudra, the fierce god, the fulfiller of desires, the all-auspicious one, unto him who lays down his rod of punishment, and unto him also, in his anger, who takes it up.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.3.14.36)

sa naḥ prasīdatāṁ bhāmo bhagavān urv-anugrahaḥ vyādhasyāpy anukampyānāṁ strīṇāṁ devaḥ satī-patiḥ

May that great one, our brother-in-law, the Personality of Godhead of vast mercy, be pleased with us — that lord and husband of the chaste Satī, merciful even to the wife of a hunter.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.3.14.37)

maitreya uvāca sva-sargasyāśiṣaṁ lokyām āśāsānāṁ pravepatīm nivṛtta-sandhyā-niyamo bhāryām āha prajāpatiḥ

Maitreya said: To his trembling wife, who desired the welfare of her children in this world, Kaśyapa, the progenitor, now free from the evening rites, spoke as follows.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.3.14.38)

kaśyapa uvāca aprāyatyād ātmanas te doṣān mauhūrtikād uta man-nideśāticāreṇa devānāṁ cātihelanāt

Kaśyapa said: Because of the impurity of your own mind, because of the inauspicious moment, because of transgressing my instruction, and also because of your disregard for the demigods —

Verse 39 (bhagavata.3.14.39)

bhaviṣyatas tavābhadrāv abhadre jāṭharādhamau lokān sa-pālāṁs trīṁś caṇḍi muhur ākrandayiṣyataḥ

O unlucky one, O haughty one, two contemptible sons, born of this condemned womb, shall be born to you, who will constantly cause the three worlds, together with their rulers, to cry out in lamentation.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.3.14.40)

prāṇināṁ hanyamānānāṁ dīnānām akṛtāgasām strīṇāṁ nigṛhyamāṇānāṁ kopiteṣu mahātmasu

When innocent, helpless beings are slaughtered, when women, guiltless, are seized and tormented, and when the great souls are provoked to anger —

Verse 41 (bhagavata.3.14.41)

tadā viśveśvaraḥ kruddho bhagavāl loka-bhāvanaḥ haniṣyaty avatīryāsau yathādrīn śataparva-dhṛk

then the Lord of the universe, the Personality of Godhead who desires the welfare of the worlds, enraged, descending Himself, will slay them, just as the wielder of the hundred-jointed thunderbolt shatters the mountains.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.3.14.42)

ditir uvāca vadhaṁ bhagavatā sākṣāt sunābhodāra-bāhunā āśāse putrayor mahyaṁ mā kruddhād brāhmaṇād prabho

Diti said: O my husband, I pray that the killing of my two sons be directly by the Personality of Godhead Himself, by His own magnanimous arms bearing the discus — let it never be by the wrath of a brāhmaṇa.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.3.14.43)

na brahma-daṇḍa-dagdhasya na bhūta-bhayadasya ca nārakāś cānugṛhṇanti yāṁ yāṁ yonim asau gataḥ

For one consumed by a brāhmaṇa's curse, and one who is a source of terror to all beings, no favor is shown even by the denizens of hell, into whatsoever species such an offender takes birth.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.3.14.44)

kaśyapa uvāca kṛta-śokānutāpena sadyaḥ pratyavamarśanāt bhagavaty uru-mānāc ca bhave mayy api cādarāt

Kaśyapa said: Because of your lamentation and penitence, your immediate proper deliberation, your great reverence for the Personality of Godhead, and also your regard for Lord Śiva and for me —

Verse 45 (bhagavata.3.14.45)

putrasyaiva ca putrāṇāṁ bhavitaikaḥ satāṁ mataḥ gāsyanti yad-yaśaḥ śuddhaṁ bhagavad-yaśasā samam

one among the sons of your own son shall be born, approved of the devotees, whose pure fame the world will sing, equal to the very fame of the Personality of Godhead.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.3.14.46)

yogair hemeva durvarṇaṁ bhāvayiṣyanti sādhavaḥ nirvairādibhir ātmānaṁ yac-chīlam anuvartitum

Saintly persons, by the practice of freedom from enmity and the like, shall purify their own selves, following in his character, just as inferior gold is purified through refining processes.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.3.14.47)

yat-prasādād idaṁ viśvaṁ prasīdati yad-ātmakam sa sva-dṛg bhagavān yasya toṣyate ’nanyayā dṛśā

By whose mercy this whole universe, which is itself His own manifestation, becomes happy — that self-seeing Personality of Godhead will be pleased with him, by an undeviating vision fixed on nothing else.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.3.14.48)

sa vai mahā-bhāgavato mahātmā mahānubhāvo mahatāṁ mahiṣṭhaḥ pravṛddha-bhaktyā hy anubhāvitāśaye niveśya vaikuṇṭham imaṁ vihāsyati

He, the topmost devotee indeed, a great soul of expanded influence, the greatest among the great, having his mind matured through devotional service and steeped in the state of highest ecstasy, shall enter into Vaikuṇṭha, forsaking this material world.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.3.14.49)

alampaṭaḥ śīla-dharo guṇākaro hṛṣṭaḥ pararddhyā vyathito duḥkhiteṣu abhūta-śatrur jagataḥ śoka-hartā naidāghikaṁ tāpam ivoḍurājaḥ

Virtuous, of excellent conduct, a reservoir of all good qualities, joyful at others' prosperity yet pained by others' sorrow, without enemies, the remover of the world's grief — like the moon, which relieves the distress of the summer heat.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.3.14.50)

Your grandson shall behold, both within and without, that spotless, lotus-eyed Lord, who accepts forms according to the desires of His own devotees — He whose form is adorned by the beautiful goddess of fortune, His face graced with radiant, shining earrings.

maitreya uvāca śrutvā bhāgavataṁ pautram amodata ditir bhṛśam putrayoś ca vadhaṁ kṛṣṇād viditvāsīn mahā-manāḥ

Maitreya said: Hearing of her grandson's future greatness as a devotee, Diti rejoiced exceedingly, and, learning that her two sons would be slain by Kṛṣṇa Himself, became greatly gladdened in heart.
