Verse 1 (bhagavata.3.23.1)
maitreya uvāca pitṛbhyāṁ prasthite sādhvī patim iṅgita-kovidā nityaṁ paryacarat prītyā bhavānīva bhavaṁ prabhum
Maitreya said: After her parents had departed, the chaste Devahuti, who understood her husband's every wish, served her lord constantly and with love, as Bhavani serves her lord Bhava.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.3.23.2)
viśrambheṇātma-śaucena gauraveṇa damena ca śuśrūṣayā sauhṛdena vācā madhurayā ca bhoḥ
O Vidura, with trust, with purity of body and mind, with reverence, with self-restraint, with attentive service, with affection, and with sweet words...
Verse 3 (bhagavata.3.23.3)
visṛjya kāmaṁ dambhaṁ ca dveṣaṁ lobham aghaṁ madam apramattodyatā nityaṁ tejīyāṁsam atoṣayat
— giving up lust, pride, envy, greed, sin, and vanity, ever watchful and diligent, she kept her illustrious husband well pleased.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.3.23.4)
sa vai devarṣi-varyas tāṁ mānavīṁ samanuvratām daivād garīyasaḥ patyur āśāsānāṁ mahāśiṣaḥ
That foremost of celestial sages beheld the daughter of Manu, devoted to him, who held her husband to be greater even than destiny itself, and who looked to him for the greatest of blessings...
Verse 5 (bhagavata.3.23.5)
kālena bhūyasā kṣāmāṁ karśitāṁ vrata-caryayā prema-gadgadayā vācā pīḍitaḥ kṛpayābravīt
...who had grown thin and weak from her long observance of vows; overcome with compassion, he spoke to her in a voice choked with love.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.3.23.6)
kardama uvāca tuṣṭo ’ham adya tava mānavi mānadāyāḥ śuśrūṣayā paramayā parayā ca bhaktyā yo dehinām ayam atīva suhṛt sa deho nāvekṣitaḥ samucitaḥ kṣapituṁ mad-arthe
Kardama said: Today, O respectful daughter of Manu, I am well pleased with you, by your excellent service and your supreme devotion. This body, so dear to every embodied soul, you have given no thought to at all, spending it entirely in my service.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.3.23.7)
ye me sva-dharma-niratasya tapaḥ-samādhi- vidyātma-yoga-vijitā bhagavat-prasādāḥ tān eva te mad-anusevanayāvaruddhān dṛṣṭiṁ prapaśya vitarāmy abhayān aśokān
Those blessings of the Lord which I, devoted to my own duty, have won through austerity, meditation, knowledge, and yoga, those very blessings, through your service to me, have already become yours; behold them now with that vision. I grant them to you, free from all fear and sorrow.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.3.23.8)

What use are all other worldly achievements, which crumble at the mere flicker of the Lord's eyebrow? You have already attained perfection; enjoy these divine riches, gained through your own devotion, riches rarely won even by men proud of royal splendor.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.3.23.9)
evaṁ bruvāṇam abalākhila-yoga-māyā- vidyā-vicakṣaṇam avekṣya gatādhir āsīt sampraśraya-praṇaya-vihvalayā gireṣad- vrīḍāvaloka-vilasad-dhasitānanāha
Hearing him speak thus, and seeing him so accomplished in all the knowledge of yogamaya, her mind grew easy; and with a voice trembling with humility and love, her face slightly bashful yet aglow with a smile, she spoke.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.3.23.10)

Devahuti said: O best of brahmanas, O mighty one, master of unfailing yogamaya, all this is already accomplished in you, I know it well, my husband. But let that promise you once made me, of bodily union, now be fulfilled, for progeny is the greatest virtue for a chaste woman blessed with so glorious a husband.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.3.23.11)

In this matter, please instruct me as the scriptures direct, so that this body of mine, wasted by unfulfilled longing, may find its fulfillment. I am overcome by desire, poor as I am; O my lord, kindly think of a fitting dwelling for this.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.3.23.12)

— her body caked with grime, her breasts discolored, entered that lake fed by the Sarasvati, its waters holy and pure.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.3.23.26)

There in that mansion, devoted to his beloved and attended by the Vidyadhari maidens, his glory in no way diminished, he shone like the lovely moon in the sky, opening the lily beds, ringed all about by stars.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.3.23.39)

In that mansion he journeyed to the pleasure valleys of great Mount Meru, favored ground of the eight guardians of the directions, made delightful by breezes that were companions to desire, praised there by the Siddhas, resounding with the blessed murmur of the falling heavenly Ganga; there, like Kubera himself, surrounded by lovely women, he took his pleasure for a very long time.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.3.23.40)

Verse 42 (bhagavata.3.23.42)
kiṁ durāpādanaṁ teṣāṁ puṁsām uddāma-cetasām yair āśritas tīrtha-padaś caraṇo vyasanātyayaḥ
What indeed is beyond the reach of resolute men who have taken shelter at the feet of the Lord, feet that are themselves a sacred crossing-place, putting an end to every calamity?
Verse 43 (bhagavata.3.23.43)

Having shown his wife the entire sphere of the earth in all its arrangements, full of countless wonders, the great yogi returned to his own hermitage.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.3.23.44)
vibhajya navadhātmānaṁ mānavīṁ suratotsukām rāmāṁ niramayan reme varṣa-pūgān muhūrtavat
Dividing himself into nine forms, delighting Manu's daughter, who longed for union, he enjoyed with his wife for years on end, as though it were but a single moment.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.3.23.45)
tasmin vimāna utkṛṣṭāṁ śayyāṁ rati-karīṁ śritā na cābudhyata taṁ kālaṁ patyāpīcyena saṅgatā
Upon that excellent bed within the mansion, a bed that stirred desire, in the company of her most handsome husband, she was scarcely even aware of time passing at all.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.3.23.46)
evaṁ yogānubhāvena dam-patyo ramamāṇayoḥ śataṁ vyatīyuḥ śaradaḥ kāma-lālasayor manāk
Thus, through the power of yoga, as the couple sported, eagerly longing for pleasure, a hundred autumns slipped by as though they were but a single moment.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.3.23.47)
tasyām ādhatta retas tāṁ bhāvayann ātmanātma-vit nodhā vidhāya rūpaṁ svaṁ sarva-saṅkalpa-vid vibhuḥ
That knower of the self, regarding her as half of his own being, dividing his form into nine, that mighty knower of every desire deposited his seed within her.
Verse 48 (bhagavata.3.23.48)
ataḥ sā suṣuve sadyo devahūtiḥ striyaḥ prajāḥ sarvās tāś cāru-sarvāṅgyo lohitotpala-gandhayaḥ
Thus Devahuti at once gave birth to daughters, every one of them lovely in every limb, and fragrant like the red lotus.
Verse 49 (bhagavata.3.23.49)
patiṁ sā pravrajiṣyantaṁ tadālakṣyośatī bahiḥ smayamānā viklavena hṛdayena vidūyatā
Seeing her husband about to depart into the life of a wandering renunciant, that beautiful woman smiled outwardly, though her heart within was troubled and torn.

Head bowed, tracing the earth with a foot bright with gem-like nails, holding back her tears, she began, slowly, to speak in soft and lovely words.
Verse 51 (bhagavata.3.23.51)
devahūtir uvāca sarvaṁ tad bhagavān mahyam upovāha pratiśrutam athāpi me prapannāyā abhayaṁ dātum arhasi
Devahuti said: My lord, you have fulfilled for me every promise you made; yet I, who have surrendered myself to you, ask that you also grant me freedom from fear.
Verse 52 (bhagavata.3.23.52)
brahman duhitṛbhis tubhyaṁ vimṛgyāḥ patayaḥ samāḥ kaścit syān me viśokāya tvayi pravrajite vanam
O brahmana, our daughters will themselves seek out husbands suited to them; but when you depart to the forest, who will there be to console my grief?
Verse 53 (bhagavata.3.23.53)
etāvatālaṁ kālena vyatikrāntena me prabho indriyārtha-prasaṅgena parityakta-parātmanaḥ
O lord, enough now of this time that has slipped by, spent chasing after the objects of the senses while neglecting knowledge of the Supreme Self.
Verse 54 (bhagavata.3.23.54)
indriyārtheṣu sajjantyā prasaṅgas tvayi me kṛtaḥ ajānantyā paraṁ bhāvaṁ tathāpy astv abhayāya me
Attached as I was to the objects of the senses, not knowing your supreme nature, I formed this bond with you; yet may that very bond become the means of my freedom from fear.
Verse 55 (bhagavata.3.23.55)
saṅgo yaḥ saṁsṛter hetur asatsu vihito ’dhiyā sa eva sādhuṣu kṛto niḥsaṅgatvāya kalpate
That very attachment which, through ignorance, when formed with the impious, becomes the cause of worldly bondage, that same attachment, when formed instead with the virtuous, leads on to liberation.
Verse 56 (bhagavata.3.23.56)
neha yat karma dharmāya na virāgāya kalpate na tīrtha-pada-sevāyai jīvann api mṛto hi saḥ
One whose actions here lead neither to dharma, nor to detachment, nor to service at the Lord's sacred feet, that person, though living, is truly dead.
Verse 57 (bhagavata.3.23.57)
sāhaṁ bhagavato nūnaṁ vañcitā māyayā dṛḍham yat tvāṁ vimuktidaṁ prāpya na mumukṣeya bandhanāt
Surely I have been deeply deceived by the Lord's maya, for even having attained you, the giver of liberation, I did not seek release from bondage.
