Skandha 3 · Chapter 25

The Glories of Devotional Service

Chapter 24All chaptersChapter 26

Verse 1 (bhagavata.3.25.1)

śaunaka uvāca kapilas tattva-saṅkhyātā bhagavān ātma-māyayā jātaḥ svayam ajaḥ sākṣād ātma-prajñaptaye nṛṇām

Shaunaka said: Kapila, the expounder of the true principles, the worshipful Lord, though Himself unborn, took birth in person through His own maya, in order to impart self-knowledge to humankind.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.3.25.2)

na hy asya varṣmaṇaḥ puṁsāṁ varimṇaḥ sarva-yoginām viśrutau śruta-devasya bhūri tṛpyanti me ’savaḥ

My senses never grow sated, however much I hear of His glory, He who is the greatest among men, the foremost of all yogis, the very Lord of the Vedas.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.3.25.3)

yad yad vidhatte bhagavān svacchandātmātma-māyayā tāni me śraddadhānasya kīrtanyāny anukīrtaya

Whatever the self-willed Lord accomplishes through His own maya is worthy of being glorified; please recount it all to me, faithful as I am.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.3.25.4)

sūta uvāca dvaipāyana-sakhas tv evaṁ maitreyo bhagavāṁs tathā prāhedaṁ viduraṁ prīta ānvīkṣikyāṁ pracoditaḥ

Suta said: Thus the worshipful Maitreya, friend of Dvaipayana, pleased and stirred to speak of transcendental knowledge, told this very thing to Vidura.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.3.25.5)

maitreya uvāca pitari prasthite ’raṇyaṁ mātuḥ priya-cikīrṣayā tasmin bindusare ’vātsīd bhagavān kapilaḥ kila

Maitreya said: When His father had set out for the forest, the worshipful Kapila, desiring to please His mother, remained there at Bindu-sarovara.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.3.25.6)

tam āsīnam akarmāṇaṁ tattva-mārgāgra-darśanam sva-sutaṁ devahūty āha dhātuḥ saṁsmaratī vacaḥ

To Him, her own son, seated there at leisure, able to reveal the highest path of truth, Devahuti, recalling Brahma's words, now spoke.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.3.25.7)

devahūtir uvāca nirviṇṇā nitarāṁ bhūmann asad-indriya-tarṣaṇāt yena sambhāvyamānena prapannāndhaṁ tamaḥ prabho

Devahuti said: O infinite one, I am utterly wearied by the ceaseless craving of these perishable senses, through which, O Lord, I have fallen into this blinding darkness.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.3.25.8)

tasya tvaṁ tamaso ’ndhasya duṣpārasyādya pāragam sac-cakṣur janmanām ante labdhaṁ me tvad-anugrahāt

You alone can carry me across that blinding darkness, so hard to cross; it is You I have now obtained, at the end of many births, as my true eye, by Your grace alone.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.3.25.9)

ya ādyo bhagavān puṁsām īśvaro vai bhavān kila lokasya tamasāndhasya cakṣuḥ sūrya ivoditaḥ

You are indeed the primal Lord and Master of all beings; for a world blinded by darkness, You have risen like the sun to be its very eye.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.3.25.10)

atha me deva sammoham apākraṣṭuṁ tvam arhasi yo ’vagraho ’haṁ mametīty etasmin yojitas tvayā

O Lord, now be pleased to dispel my delusion, this misconception of 'I' and 'mine' into which You Yourself have drawn me.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.3.25.11)

taṁ tvā gatāhaṁ śaraṇaṁ śaraṇyaṁ sva-bhṛtya-saṁsāra-taroḥ kuṭhāram jijñāsayāhaṁ prakṛteḥ pūruṣasya namāmi sad-dharma-vidāṁ variṣṭham

I have come to You for shelter, You alone worthy of being a refuge, the very axe that fells the tree of worldly existence for Your servants; desiring to know of nature and spirit, I bow to You, foremost among the knowers of true dharma.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.3.25.12)

maitreya uvāca iti sva-mātur niravadyam īpsitaṁ niśamya puṁsām apavarga-vardhanam dhiyābhinandyātmavatāṁ satāṁ gatir babhāṣa īṣat-smita-śobhitānanaḥ

Maitreya said: Hearing His mother's flawless request, one that furthers liberation for humankind, He, the very goal of the self-realized and the virtuous, welcomed it inwardly, and, His face lit with a gentle smile, began to speak.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.3.25.13)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca yoga ādhyātmikaḥ puṁsāṁ mato niḥśreyasāya me atyantoparatir yatra duḥkhasya ca sukhasya ca

The Lord said: In My view, it is that yoga relating to the self which is approved for the highest good of humankind, that yoga in which there comes a complete cessation of both sorrow and happiness.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.3.25.14)

tam imaṁ te pravakṣyāmi yam avocaṁ purānaghe ṛṣīṇāṁ śrotu-kāmānāṁ yogaṁ sarvāṅga-naipuṇam

O sinless one, I shall now tell you that very yoga, perfect and complete in all its parts, which I once explained to the sages who longed to hear it.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.3.25.15)

cetaḥ khalv asya bandhāya muktaye cātmano matam guṇeṣu saktaṁ bandhāya rataṁ vā puṁsi muktaye

The consciousness of the self is held to be the cause of both bondage and liberation: when attached to the modes of material nature it binds, but when devoted to the Supreme Person it liberates.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.3.25.16)

ahaṁ mamābhimānotthaiḥ kāma-lobhādibhir malaiḥ vītaṁ yadā manaḥ śuddham aduḥkham asukhaṁ samam

When the mind is freed from the impurities of lust, greed, and the like, all born of the false conceit of 'I' and 'mine,' and becomes pure, it rises beyond sorrow and joy, into a state of perfect equanimity.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.3.25.17)

tadā puruṣa ātmānaṁ kevalaṁ prakṛteḥ param nirantaraṁ svayaṁ-jyotir aṇimānam akhaṇḍitam

Then that person beholds his own self as pure, beyond material nature, unbroken, self-luminous, and though infinitesimally small, undivided.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.3.25.18)

jñāna-vairāgya-yuktena bhakti-yuktena cātmanā paripaśyaty udāsīnaṁ prakṛtiṁ ca hataujasam

With a mind now equipped with knowledge, renunciation, and devotion, one looks upon material nature, its power now spent, with complete indifference.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.3.25.19)

na yujyamānayā bhaktyā bhagavaty akhilātmani sadṛśo ’sti śivaḥ panthā yogināṁ brahma-siddhaye

For yogis seeking perfection in Brahman, there is no path as truly auspicious as devotion offered to the Lord, the Soul of all beings.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.3.25.20)

prasaṅgam ajaraṁ pāśam ātmanaḥ kavayo viduḥ sa eva sādhuṣu kṛto mokṣa-dvāram apāvṛtam

The wise know attachment to be an ever-fresh bond upon the soul; yet that very attachment, when turned toward the virtuous, throws wide open the door of liberation.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.3.25.21)

titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ suhṛdaḥ sarva-dehinām ajāta-śatravaḥ śāntāḥ sādhavaḥ sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ

Forbearing, compassionate, friends to every embodied being, without enemies, peaceful, virtuous, adorned with the very ornaments of saintliness.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.3.25.22)

mayy ananyena bhāvena bhaktiṁ kurvanti ye dṛḍhām mat-kṛte tyakta-karmāṇas tyakta-svajana-bāndhavāḥ

Those who render Me firm, undivided devotion, who for My sake have set aside all other action and forsaken kinsmen and friends,

Verse 23 (bhagavata.3.25.23)

mad-āśrayāḥ kathā mṛṣṭāḥ śṛṇvanti kathayanti ca tapanti vividhās tāpā naitān mad-gata-cetasaḥ

who hear and tell the delightful stories connected with Me, upon them, whose minds are fixed on Me, the various afflictions of this world do not burn.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.3.25.24)

ta ete sādhavaḥ sādhvi sarva-saṅga-vivarjitāḥ saṅgas teṣv atha te prārthyaḥ saṅga-doṣa-harā hi te

These, O virtuous lady, are the true saints, free from every worldly attachment; it is their company you should seek, for it alone removes the defect of ordinary attachment.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.3.25.25)

satāṁ prasaṅgān mama vīrya-saṁvido bhavanti hṛt-karṇa-rasāyanāḥ kathāḥ taj-joṣaṇād āśv apavarga-vartmani śraddhā ratir bhaktir anukramiṣyati

Through the company of the virtuous, accounts that reveal My own glory become like nectar to the heart and ear; by cultivating them, faith, attachment, and devotion follow, one upon the other, swiftly along the path of liberation.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.3.25.26)

bhaktyā pumāñ jāta-virāga aindriyād dṛṣṭa-śrutān mad-racanānucintayā cittasya yatto grahaṇe yoga-yukto yatiṣyate ṛjubhir yoga-mārgaiḥ

Through devotion, a person, having grown detached from sense-objects seen and heard, through constant contemplation of My creation, striving to master the mind, established in yoga, makes his effort along the straight paths of yoga.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.3.25.27)

asevayāyaṁ prakṛter guṇānāṁ jñānena vairāgya-vijṛmbhitena yogena mayy arpitayā ca bhaktyā māṁ pratyag-ātmānam ihāvarundhe

By ceasing to serve the modes of material nature, through knowledge that has blossomed into renunciation, through yoga, and through devotion offered unto Me, he attains Me, the innermost Self, here in this very life.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.3.25.28)

devahūtir uvāca kācit tvayy ucitā bhaktiḥ kīdṛśī mama gocarā yayā padaṁ te nirvāṇam añjasānvāśnavā aham

Devahuti said: What form of devotion to You is proper for me, and within my own reach, by which I might swiftly attain those liberating feet of Yours?

Verse 29 (bhagavata.3.25.29)

yo yogo bhagavad-bāṇo nirvāṇātmaṁs tvayoditaḥ kīdṛśaḥ kati cāṅgāni yatas tattvāvabodhanam

O embodiment of liberation, that yoga aimed at the Supreme Lord which You have described, of what nature is it, and how many limbs does it have, by which one may come to understand the truth?

Verse 30 (bhagavata.3.25.30)

tad etan me vijānīhi yathāhaṁ manda-dhīr hare sukhaṁ buddhyeya durbodhaṁ yoṣā bhavad-anugrahāt

O Hari, please explain this to me in such a way that I, of dull understanding and a mere woman, may through Your grace easily grasp what is otherwise so difficult to understand.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.3.25.31)

maitreya uvāca viditvārthaṁ kapilo mātur itthaṁ jāta-sneho yatra tanvābhijātaḥ tattvāmnāyaṁ yat pravadanti sāṅkhyaṁ provāca vai bhakti-vitāna-yogam

Maitreya said: Understanding His mother's purpose, and His own affection stirring since He had been born of her very body, Kapila spoke to her of that traditional doctrine of truth called Sankhya, together with the yoga that spreads devotion.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.3.25.32)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca devānāṁ guṇa-liṅgānām ānuśravika-karmaṇām sattva evaika-manaso vṛttiḥ svābhāvikī tu yā animittā bhāgavatī bhaktiḥ siddher garīyasī

The Lord said: The senses are indicators of their objects, engaged in the actions enjoined by scripture; but the natural inclination of a one-pointed mind toward the Supreme is itself supreme, motiveless devotion to the Lord is greater even than liberation itself.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.3.25.33)

jarayaty āśu yā kośaṁ nigīrṇam analo yathā

that devotion which swiftly consumes the subtle sheath, just as fire quickly digests whatever it has swallowed.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.3.25.34)

naikātmatāṁ me spṛhayanti kecin mat-pāda-sevābhiratā mad-īhāḥ ye ’nyonyato bhāgavatāḥ prasajya sabhājayante mama pauruṣāṇi

Some devotees, absorbed in the service of My feet and striving only for Me, do not even wish for oneness with Me; gathering together, they glorify My mighty deeds among themselves.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.3.25.35)

paśyanti te me rucirāṇy amba santaḥ prasanna-vaktrāruṇa-locanāni rūpāṇi divyāni vara-pradāni sākaṁ vācaṁ spṛhaṇīyāṁ vadanti

O mother, these saints behold My charming, divine, boon-granting forms, their faces gentle and gracious, their eyes reddish like the dawn; and they converse with Me in words truly worth longing for.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.3.25.36)

tair darśanīyāvayavair udāra- vilāsa-hāsekṣita-vāma-sūktaiḥ hṛtātmano hṛta-prāṇāṁś ca bhaktir anicchato me gatim aṇvīṁ prayuṅkte

By those charming limbs, that exalted play, that smile, that glance, those pleasing words, their very hearts and life-breaths are captivated, and devotion carries them, even without their seeking it, toward My own subtle abode.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.3.25.37)

atho vibhūtiṁ mama māyāvinas tām aiśvaryam aṣṭāṅgam anupravṛttam śriyaṁ bhāgavatīṁ vāspṛhayanti bhadrāṁ parasya me te ’śnuvate tu loke

They do not even desire that opulence of Mine, the Lord of maya, the eightfold mystic power that trails behind it, nor the blessed splendor of the divine kingdom; yet, devoted to Me, the Supreme, they come to enjoy it even in this very world.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.3.25.38)

na karhicin mat-parāḥ śānta-rūpe naṅkṣyanti no me ’nimiṣo leḍhi hetiḥ yeṣām ahaṁ priya ātmā sutaś ca sakhā guruḥ suhṛdo daivam iṣṭam

O tranquil one, those devoted to Me are never destroyed, nor does the never-blinking weapon of time ever touch them, for to them I am the beloved, the very self, the son, the friend, the teacher, the well-wisher, and the chosen Deity.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.3.25.39)

imaṁ lokaṁ tathaivāmum ātmānam ubhayāyinam ātmānam anu ye ceha ye rāyaḥ paśavo gṛhāḥ

This world, and likewise the next, the subtle self that travels between the two, and whatever, in relation to that self, belongs here, wealth, cattle, home,

Verse 40 (bhagavata.3.25.40)

visṛjya sarvān anyāṁś ca mām evaṁ viśvato-mukham bhajanty ananyayā bhaktyā tān mṛtyor atipāraye

all of this, and everything else besides, having renounced, they worship Me alone, the Lord who faces every direction, with undivided devotion; and those souls I carry across, beyond the reach of death.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.3.25.41)

nānyatra mad bhagavataḥ pradhāna-puruṣeśvarāt ātmanaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ bhayaṁ tīvraṁ nivartate

Nowhere else than in Me, the Supreme Lord, master of both matter and spirit, the Self of all beings, does their intense fear ever come to an end.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.3.25.42)

mad-bhayād vāti vāto ’yaṁ sūryas tapati mad-bhayāt varṣatīndro dahaty agnir mṛtyuś carati mad-bhayāt

Out of fear of Me this wind blows, out of fear of Me the sun gives its heat; out of fear of Me Indra sends the rain, fire burns, and death goes about its work.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.3.25.43)

jñāna-vairāgya-yuktena bhakti-yogena yoginaḥ kṣemāya pāda-mūlaṁ me praviśanty akuto-bhayam

The yogis, equipped with knowledge and renunciation, through the yoga of devotion, enter, for their own security, that fearless refuge at the very root of My feet.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.3.25.44)

etāvān eva loke ’smin puṁsāṁ niḥśreyasodayaḥ tīvreṇa bhakti-yogena mano mayy arpitaṁ sthiram

This alone, in this world, is the very rise of the highest good for humankind: that through intense devotional yoga, the mind should become steadily and firmly fixed upon Me.
