Skandha 4 · Chapter 30
The Activities of the Pracetas
Verse 1 (bhagavata.4.30.1)
vidura uvāca ye tvayābhihitā brahman sutāḥ prācīnabarhiṣaḥ te rudra-gītena hariṁ siddhim āpuḥ pratoṣya kām
Vidura said: O brahmana, you told me of the sons of Prachinabarhi who pleased Bhagavan Hari with the Rudra-gita. What perfection did they attain by satisfying Him?
Verse 2 (bhagavata.4.30.2)
kiṁ bārhaspatyeha paratra vātha kaivalya-nātha-priya-pārśva-vartinaḥ āsādya devaṁ giriśaṁ yadṛcchayā prāpuḥ paraṁ nūnam atha pracetasaḥ
O son of Brihaspati, having by chance encountered the god Girisha, that dear companion of the Lord of liberation, what did the Pracetas attain, in this world or the next? Surely they attained the highest state.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.4.30.3)
maitreya uvāca pracetaso ’ntar udadhau pitur ādeśa-kāriṇaḥ japa-yajñena tapasā purañjanam atoṣayan
Maitreya said: The Pracetas, obeying their father's order, entered the sea and, through the sacrifice of japa and austerity, set about pleasing Bhagavan.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.4.30.4)
daśa-varṣa-sahasrānte puruṣas tu sanātanaḥ teṣām āvirabhūt kṛcchraṁ śāntena śamayan rucā
At the end of ten thousand years, that eternal Purusha appeared before them, his serene radiance dispelling all the hardship of their austerity.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.4.30.5)
suparṇa-skandham ārūḍho meru-śṛṅgam ivāmbudaḥ pīta-vāsā maṇi-grīvaḥ kurvan vitimirā diśaḥ
Mounted on the shoulders of Suparna, like a cloud resting on the peak of Meru, clothed in yellow, his neck adorned with a jewel, he made every direction free of darkness.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.4.30.6)
kāśiṣṇunā kanaka-varṇa-vibhūṣaṇena bhrājat-kapola-vadano vilasat-kirīṭaḥ aṣṭāyudhair anucarair munibhiḥ surendrair āsevito garuḍa-kinnara-gīta-kīrtiḥ
His face and cheeks blazed with golden ornaments, His crown shining bright; He bore eight weapons, and was attended by followers, sages and gods, His glory sung by Garuda and the Kinnaras.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.4.30.7)
pīnāyatāṣṭa-bhuja-maṇḍala-madhya-lakṣmyā spardhac-chriyā parivṛto vana-mālayādyaḥ barhiṣmataḥ puruṣa āha sutān prapannān parjanya-nāda-rutayā saghṛṇāvalokaḥ
Adorned around his eight strong, outstretched arms with a forest garland whose beauty rivaled that of the goddess of fortune, the primeval Purusha, with a merciful glance and a voice like thunder, addressed the surrendered sons of Barhishat.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.4.30.8)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca varaṁ vṛṇīdhvaṁ bhadraṁ vo yūyaṁ me nṛpa-nandanāḥ sauhārdenāpṛthag-dharmās tuṣṭo ’haṁ sauhṛdena vaḥ
Shri Bhagavan said: Ask for a boon — may all be well with you, O sons of the King. Since you are joined in one dharma through mutual affection, I am pleased by your friendship.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.4.30.9)
yo ’nusmarati sandhyāyāṁ yuṣmān anudinaṁ naraḥ tasya bhrātṛṣv ātma-sāmyaṁ tathā bhūteṣu sauhṛdam
Whoever remembers you daily at the twilight hour will come to feel equanimity toward his own brothers and friendship toward all beings.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.4.30.10)
ye tu māṁ rudra-gītena sāyaṁ prātaḥ samāhitāḥ stuvanty ahaṁ kāma-varān dāsye prajñāṁ ca śobhanām
And those who, with a focused mind, praise Me morning and evening with the Rudra-gita — to them I shall grant the boons they desire, together with a beautiful understanding.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.4.30.11)
yad yūyaṁ pitur ādeśam agrahīṣṭa mudānvitāḥ atho va uśatī kīrtir lokān anu bhaviṣyati
Because you have joyfully accepted your father's command, your beautiful fame will spread through all the worlds.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.4.30.12)
bhavitā viśrutaḥ putro ’navamo brahmaṇo guṇaiḥ ya etām ātma-vīryeṇa tri-lokīṁ pūrayiṣyati
A renowned son will be born to you, no less in his qualities than Brahma himself, who by his own power will fill these three worlds with descendants.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.4.30.13)
kaṇḍoḥ pramlocayā labdhā kanyā kamala-locanā tāṁ cāpaviddhāṁ jagṛhur bhūruhā nṛpa-nandanāḥ
From the sage Kandu, through Pramlocha, a lotus-eyed daughter was born; and when she was left abandoned, O sons of the King, the trees took her in.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.4.30.14)
kṣut-kṣāmāyā mukhe rājā somaḥ pīyūṣa-varṣiṇīm deśinīṁ rodamānāyā nidadhe sa dayānvitaḥ
As that hungry, wasted child wept, the moon-king, moved with compassion, placed his own nectar-streaming finger into her crying mouth.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.4.30.15)
prajā-visarga ādiṣṭāḥ pitrā mām anuvartatā tatra kanyāṁ varārohāṁ tām udvahata mā ciram
Commanded by your father, who himself follows Me, to bring forth progeny, marry that lovely maiden without any delay.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.4.30.16)
apṛthag-dharma-śīlānāṁ sarveṣāṁ vaḥ sumadhyamā apṛthag-dharma-śīleyaṁ bhūyāt patny arpitāśayā
Since all of you share the same nature and dharma, let this slender maiden, of that same undivided nature, become your wife, her heart wholly given to you.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.4.30.17)
divya-varṣa-sahasrāṇāṁ sahasram ahataujasaḥ bhaumān bhokṣyatha bhogān vai divyāṁś cānugrahān mama
For a thousand thousand celestial years, your vigor undiminished, you shall enjoy earthly pleasures as well as divine favors granted by My own grace.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.4.30.18)
atha mayy anapāyinyā bhaktyā pakva-guṇāśayāḥ upayāsyatha mad-dhāma nirvidya nirayād ataḥ
Then, your hearts ripened by unwavering devotion to Me, growing detached from this world that is like a hell, you shall attain My own abode.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.4.30.19)
gṛheṣv āviśatāṁ cāpi puṁsāṁ kuśala-karmaṇām mad-vārtā-yāta-yāmānāṁ na bandhāya gṛhā matāḥ
Even for men who take up household life, if their deeds are auspicious and their hours pass in discourse about Me, that household is not reckoned a bondage at all.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.4.30.20)
navyavad dhṛdaye yaj jño brahmaitad brahma-vādibhiḥ na muhyanti na śocanti na hṛṣyanti yato gatāḥ
That knower who abides ever fresh within the heart is called Brahman by the knowers of Brahman; having reached that state, one is neither deluded, nor grieves, nor becomes elated.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.4.30.21)
maitreya uvāca evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ puruṣārtha-bhājanaṁ janārdanaṁ prāñjalayaḥ pracetasaḥ tad-darśana-dhvasta-tamo-rajo-malā girāgṛṇan gadgadayā suhṛttamam
Maitreya said: As Janardana, the very treasury of life's true goals, spoke thus, the Pracetas, hands folded, their impurities of darkness and passion swept away by that very vision, began to praise their dearest friend in a voice choked with emotion.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.4.30.22)
pracetasa ūcuḥ namo namaḥ kleśa-vināśanāya nirūpitodāra-guṇāhvayāya mano-vaco-vega-puro-javāya sarvākṣa-mārgair agatādhvane namaḥ
The Pracetas said: Obeisances again and again to You, destroyer of all affliction, whose very name proclaims Your magnanimous qualities; who move swifter than mind or speech; obeisances to You, whose path no sense can ever reach.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.4.30.23)
śuddhāya śāntāya namaḥ sva-niṣṭhayā manasy apārthaṁ vilasad-dvayāya namo jagat-sthāna-layodayeṣu gṛhīta-māyā-guṇa-vigrahāya
Obeisances to You, the pure, the tranquil, in whom duality, though it appears within the mind, is in truth without substance; obeisances to You who take up forms fashioned of Your own maya-gunas for the creation, maintenance and dissolution of the world.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.4.30.24)
namo viśuddha-sattvāya haraye hari-medhase vāsudevāya kṛṣṇāya prabhave sarva-sātvatām
Obeisances to You of purest being, to Hari, whose very intellect removes all distress; to Vasudeva, to Krishna, the source of all devotees.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.4.30.25)
namaḥ kamala-nābhāya namaḥ kamala-māline namaḥ kamala-pādāya namas te kamalekṣaṇa
Obeisances to the lotus-naveled one, obeisances to the wearer of the lotus garland, obeisances to the lotus-footed one; obeisances to You, O lotus-eyed one.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.4.30.26)
namaḥ kamala-kiñjalka- piśaṅgāmala-vāsase sarva-bhūta-nivāsāya namo ’yuṅkṣmahi sākṣiṇe
Obeisances to You, clad in stainless garments the color of the lotus filament, who dwell within all beings as their witness — to You we now offer ourselves.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.4.30.27)
rūpaṁ bhagavatā tv etad aśeṣa-kleśa-saṅkṣayam āviṣkṛtaṁ naḥ kliṣṭānāṁ kim anyad anukampitam
This form of Yours, O Bhagavan, which destroys every affliction, You have revealed to us in our distress; what greater compassion could there be than this?
Verse 28 (bhagavata.4.30.28)
etāvat tvaṁ hi vibhubhir bhāvyaṁ dīneṣu vatsalaiḥ yad anusmaryate kāle sva-buddhyābhadra-randhana
O destroyer of misfortune, this alone befits the mighty who are tender toward the lowly — that they be recalled, in their own time, by the very wisdom they grant.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.4.30.29)
yenopaśāntir bhūtānāṁ kṣullakānām apīhatām antarhito ’ntar-hṛdaye kasmān no veda nāśiṣaḥ
By which even the smallest striving creatures find their peace — You, hidden within the heart, why should You not know our own desires as well?
Verse 30 (bhagavata.4.30.30)
asāv eva varo ’smākam īpsito jagataḥ pate prasanno bhagavān yeṣām apavarga-gurur gatiḥ
O Lord of the universe, this alone is the one boon we desire — that Bhagavan, the very teacher of liberation, be pleased, and become our final refuge.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.4.30.31)
varaṁ vṛṇīmahe ’thāpi nātha tvat parataḥ parāt na hy antas tvad-vibhūtīnāṁ so ’nanta iti gīyase
And yet, O Lord, we ask this boon of You, who are beyond even the highest; for Your glories have no end at all — and for this You are celebrated as Ananta, the Infinite One.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.4.30.32)
pārijāte ’ñjasā labdhe sāraṅgo ’nyan na sevate tvad-aṅghri-mūlam āsādya sākṣāt kiṁ kiṁ vṛṇīmahi
Once the bee has easily won the parijata tree, it seeks nothing else; having reached the very root of Your feet, what more could we possibly ask for?
Verse 33 (bhagavata.4.30.33)
yāvat te māyayā spṛṣṭā bhramāma iha karmabhiḥ tāvad bhavat-prasaṅgānāṁ saṅgaḥ syān no bhave bhave
Yet as long as, touched by Your maya, we must go on wandering here through our own deeds, may we, birth after birth, have the company of those absorbed in speaking of You.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.4.30.34)
tulayāma lavenāpi na svargaṁ nāpunar-bhavam bhagavat-saṅgi-saṅgasya martyānāṁ kim utāśiṣaḥ
Not even heaven, nor even freedom from rebirth, can be weighed against a single moment's association with those who keep the company of Your devotees — how much less, then, any other blessing for mortal beings.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.4.30.35)
yatreḍyante kathā mṛṣṭās tṛṣṇāyāḥ praśamo yataḥ nirvairaṁ yatra bhūteṣu nodvego yatra kaścana
That place where pure, cleansing stories are extolled, whence all craving is stilled, where there is no enmity among beings and no agitation whatsoever —
Verse 36 (bhagavata.4.30.36)
yatra nārāyaṇaḥ sākṣād bhagavān nyāsināṁ gatiḥ saṁstūyate sat-kathāsu mukta-saṅgaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ
that place where Bhagavan Narayana himself, the very goal of renunciants, is praised again and again in holy discourse by souls freed of all attachment —
Verse 37 (bhagavata.4.30.37)
teṣāṁ vicaratāṁ padbhyāṁ tīrthānāṁ pāvanecchayā bhītasya kiṁ na roceta tāvakānāṁ samāgamaḥ
should such a meeting not be welcome to one who fears this worldly existence, when it is with devotees of Yours who wander on foot even to purify the holy places of pilgrimage?
Verse 38 (bhagavata.4.30.38)
vayaṁ tu sākṣād bhagavan bhavasya priyasya sakhyuḥ kṣaṇa-saṅgamena suduścikitsyasya bhavasya mṛtyor bhiṣaktamaṁ tvādya gatiṁ gatāḥ sma
O Bhagavan, through a mere moment's encounter with Bhava, Your own beloved friend, we have today come to You, the most expert physician for this hardly curable disease of birth and death.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.4.30.39)
yan naḥ svadhītaṁ guravaḥ prasāditā viprāś ca vṛddhāś ca sad-ānuvṛttyā āryā natāḥ suhṛdo bhrātaraś ca sarvāṇi bhūtāny anasūyayaiva
Whatever we have studied, whatever we have done to please our teachers, the brahmanas and our elders through steady devotion, whatever homage we have paid to noble ones, to friends, to brothers, and indeed to all beings, without any envy —
Verse 40 (bhagavata.4.30.40)
yan naḥ sutaptaṁ tapa etad īśa nirandhasāṁ kālam adabhram apsu sarvaṁ tad etat puruṣasya bhūmno vṛṇīmahe te paritoṣaṇāya
and, O Lord, whatever austerity we have endured, standing without food for so long a time in the waters — all of this we now offer, for the satisfaction of You, the all-pervading Supreme Person.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.4.30.41)
manuḥ svayambhūr bhagavān bhavaś ca ye ’nye tapo-jñāna-viśuddha-sattvāḥ adṛṣṭa-pārā api yan-mahimnaḥ stuvanty atho tvātma-samaṁ gṛṇīmaḥ
Manu, Svayambhu, Bhagavan Bhava, and other great souls purified by austerity and knowledge, though unable to reach the far limit of Your glory, still offer You praise; in that same way, according to our own small capacity, we too now praise You.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.4.30.42)
namaḥ samāya śuddhāya puruṣāya parāya ca vāsudevāya sattvāya tubhyaṁ bhagavate namaḥ
Obeisances to You, equal toward all, pure, the Supreme Person; to Vasudeva, to pure being itself; obeisances to You, O Bhagavan.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.4.30.43)
maitreya uvāca iti pracetobhir abhiṣṭuto hariḥ prītas tathety āha śaraṇya-vatsalaḥ anicchatāṁ yānam atṛpta-cakṣuṣāṁ yayau sva-dhāmānapavarga-vīryaḥ
Maitreya said: Thus praised by the Pracetas, Hari, ever tender toward those who take refuge in Him, pleased, said "So be it" — and though they, their eyes still unsated, did not wish Him to go, He, of unfailing power, departed for His own abode.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.4.30.44)
atha niryāya salilāt pracetasa udanvataḥ vīkṣyākupyan drumaiś channāṁ gāṁ gāṁ roddhum ivocchritaiḥ
Then the Pracetas emerged from the ocean's waters, and, seeing the earth covered over with towering trees, as if they blocked the way, grew angry.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.4.30.45)
tato ’gni-mārutau rājann amuñcan mukhato ruṣā mahīṁ nirvīrudhaṁ kartuṁ saṁvartaka ivātyaye
O King, in their fury they then released fire and wind from their mouths, to strip the earth bare of vegetation, like the fire of Samvartaka at the time of universal dissolution.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.4.30.46)
bhasmasāt kriyamāṇāṁs tān drumān vīkṣya pitāmahaḥ āgataḥ śamayām āsa putrān barhiṣmato nayaiḥ
Seeing those trees being reduced to ashes, grandfather Brahma came there and, with his wise counsel, pacified the sons of Barhishat.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.4.30.47)
tatrāvaśiṣṭā ye vṛkṣā bhītā duhitaraṁ tadā ujjahrus te pracetobhya upadiṣṭāḥ svayambhuvā
The trees that remained, terrified, and instructed by Svayambhu, then brought forth their own daughter and offered her to the Pracetas.
Verse 48 (bhagavata.4.30.48)
te ca brahmaṇa ādeśān māriṣām upayemire yasyāṁ mahad-avajñānād ajany ajana-yonijaḥ
At Brahma's command, the Pracetas married that maiden named Marisha; from her, on account of a great earlier disrespect, that unborn one was born again through a womb.
Verse 49 (bhagavata.4.30.49)
cākṣuṣe tv antare prāpte prāk-sarge kāla-vidrute yaḥ sasarja prajā iṣṭāḥ sa dakṣo daiva-coditaḥ
When the Chakshusha manvantara came, his earlier creation having faded away with time, that same Daksha, impelled by providence, brought forth the desired progeny.
Verse 50 (bhagavata.4.30.50)
yo jāyamānaḥ sarveṣāṁ tejas tejasvināṁ rucā svayopādatta dākṣyāc ca karmaṇāṁ dakṣam abruvan
At the very moment of his birth, he drew to himself, by his own splendor, the brilliance of all other radiant beings; and because of his skill in action, he came to be called Daksha, the Able.
Verse 51 (bhagavata.4.30.51)
taṁ prajā-sarga-rakṣāyām anādir abhiṣicya ca yuyoja yuyuje ’nyāṁś ca sa vai sarva-prajāpatīn
The beginningless Brahma installed him in the work of generating and protecting living beings, and he in turn set all the other Prajapatis to that same task.
