Brahma Satisfies Lord Shiva

Chapter 5All chaptersChapter 7

Verse 1 (bhagavata.4.6.1)

maitreya uvāca atha deva-gaṇāḥ sarve rudrānīkaiḥ parājitāḥ śūla-paṭṭiśa-nistriṁśa- gadā-parigha-mudgaraiḥ

Sri Maitreya said: Then all the assembled gods, defeated by the hosts of Rudra armed with tridents, spears, swords, maces, iron clubs and hammers,

Verse 2 (bhagavata.4.6.2)

sañchinna-bhinna-sarvāṅgāḥ sartvik-sabhyā bhayākulāḥ svayambhuve namaskṛtya kārtsnyenaitan nyavedayan

— their bodies cut and wounded all over, along with the priests and assembly members, overcome with fear — went to Svayambhu (Brahma), and having offered their obeisances, related to him the entire happening in full.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.4.6.3)

upalabhya puraivaitad bhagavān abja-sambhavaḥ nārāyaṇaś ca viśvātmā na kasyādhvaram īyatuḥ

Bhagavan Abjasambhava (Brahma, born of the lotus) and Bhagavan Narayana, the Soul of the universe, having already foreseen this, had for that very reason not attended anyone's sacrifice.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.4.6.4)

tad ākarṇya vibhuḥ prāha tejīyasi kṛtāgasi kṣemāya tatra sā bhūyān na prāyeṇa bubhūṣatām

Hearing all this, the mighty Brahma said: When an offense has been committed against one of great power, there can generally be no true well-being for those who wish to prosper by that sacrifice.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.4.6.5)

athāpi yūyaṁ kṛta-kilbiṣā bhavaṁ ye barhiṣo bhāga-bhājaṁ parāduḥ prasādayadhvaṁ pariśuddha-cetasā kṣipra-prasādaṁ pragṛhītāṅghri-padmam

Even so, all of you who denied Bhava (Shiva) his rightful share in the sacrificial offerings have thereby committed an offense against him; go now with a purified heart, take hold of his lotus feet, and beg his forgiveness — for he is quickly pleased.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.4.6.6)

āśāsānā jīvitam adhvarasya lokaḥ sa-pālaḥ kupite na yasmin tam āśu devaṁ priyayā vihīnaṁ kṣamāpayadhvaṁ hṛdi viddhaṁ duruktaiḥ

If he becomes angry, not even the worlds together with their guardians can hope to survive the sacrifice's continuation; go at once and beg forgiveness of that god, who has just lost his beloved wife and whose heart is already wounded by harsh words.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.4.6.7)

Neither I, nor the personified sacrifice, nor you, nor any other embodied being — not even the great sages — truly know the measure of his strength and power; who then would dare devise any means against one who is entirely self-sufficient and answerable to none?

Verse 8 (bhagavata.4.6.8)

sa ittham ādiśya surān ajas tu taiḥ samanvitaḥ pitṛbhiḥ sa-prajeśaiḥ yayau sva-dhiṣṇyān nilayaṁ pura-dviṣaḥ kailāsam adri-pravaraṁ priyaṁ prabhoḥ

Having thus instructed the gods, the unborn Brahma, accompanied by them along with the Pitrs and the lords of creation, set out from his own abode toward Kailasa, the finest of mountains, beloved dwelling of Purandvishta (Shiva, foe of the demon Tripura).

Verse 9 (bhagavata.4.6.9)

janmauṣadhi-tapo-mantra- yoga-siddhair naretaraiḥ juṣṭaṁ kinnara-gandharvair apsarobhir vṛtaṁ sadā

That abode is frequented by beings other than ordinary men, who have attained perfection by birth, herbs, austerity, mantra or yoga, and it is ever surrounded by Kinnaras, Gandharvas and Apsaras.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.4.6.10)

nānā-maṇimayaiḥ śṛṅgair nānā-dhātu-vicitritaiḥ nānā-druma-latā-gulmair nānā-mṛga-gaṇāvṛtaiḥ

It is adorned with countless peaks made of every kind of jewel and streaked with varied minerals, and it is covered with all manner of trees, vines and shrubs, thronged with countless herds of deer.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.4.6.11)

nānāmala-prasravaṇair nānā-kandara-sānubhiḥ ramaṇaṁ viharantīnāṁ ramaṇaiḥ siddha-yoṣitām

It has countless pure waterfalls and countless caves and ridges, where the wives of the perfected sages sport joyfully together with their beloved husbands.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.4.6.12)

mayūra-kekābhirutaṁ madāndhāli-vimūrcchitam plāvitai rakta-kaṇṭhānāṁ kūjitaiś ca patattriṇām

It resounds with the calls of peacocks and the drone of bees intoxicated with honey, and it echoes with the sweet warbling of red-throated cuckoos and the murmuring of other birds.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.4.6.13)

āhvayantam ivoddhastair dvijān kāma-dughair drumaiḥ vrajantam iva mātaṅgair gṛṇantam iva nirjharaiḥ

With its wish-fulfilling trees raising their branches like hands, it seems to be calling out to the birds; with its herds of elephants passing over it, it seems itself to be walking; and with its resounding waterfalls, it seems itself to be speaking.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.4.6.14)

mandāraiḥ pārijātaiś ca saralaiś copaśobhitam tamālaiḥ śāla-tālaiś ca kovidārāsanārjunaiḥ

It is adorned with mandara, parijata and sarala trees, with tamala, shala, tala, kovidara, asana and arjuna trees,

Verse 15 (bhagavata.4.6.15)

cūtaiḥ kadambair nīpaiś ca nāga-punnāga-campakaiḥ pāṭalāśoka-bakulaiḥ kundaiḥ kurabakair api

and with mango, kadamba, nipa, naga, punnaga and champaka trees, and with patala, ashoka, bakula, kunda and kurabaka trees as well.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.4.6.16)

svarṇārṇa-śata-patraiś ca vara-reṇuka-jātibhiḥ kubjakair mallikābhiś ca mādhavībhiś ca maṇḍitam

It is decorated further with golden lotuses of a hundred petals, with fine renuka blossoms, and with kubjaka, mallika and madhavi creepers.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.4.6.17)

panasodumbarāśvattha- plakṣa-nyagrodha-hiṅgubhiḥ bhūrjair oṣadhibhiḥ pūgai rājapūgaiś ca jambubhiḥ

There are also jackfruit, udumbara, ashvattha, plaksha, banyan and asafoetida trees, along with birch, medicinal herbs, betel-palms, royal betel-palms and jambu trees.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.4.6.18)

kharjūrāmrātakāmrādyaiḥ priyāla-madhukeṅgudaiḥ druma-jātibhir anyaiś ca rājitaṁ veṇu-kīcakaiḥ

It shines further with date palms, amrataka, mango and similar trees, with priyala, madhuka and ingudi trees, and with many other kinds, along with slender bamboo and kichaka reeds.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.4.6.19)

kumudotpala-kahlāra- śatapatra-vanarddhibhiḥ nalinīṣu kalaṁ kūjat- khaga-vṛndopaśobhitam

The lotus-ponds abound with kumuda, utpala, kahlara and hundred-petaled lotuses, and are further beautified by flocks of birds warbling sweetly upon them.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.4.6.20)

mṛgaiḥ śākhāmṛgaiḥ kroḍair mṛgendrair ṛkṣa-śalyakaiḥ gavayaiḥ śarabhair vyāghrai rurubhir mahiṣādibhiḥ

There deer, monkeys, boars, lions, bears, porcupines, wild oxen, sharabhas, tigers, small deer, buffaloes and many other creatures roam freely.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.4.6.21)

karṇāntraikapadāśvāsyair nirjuṣṭaṁ vṛka-nābhibhiḥ kadalī-khaṇḍa-saṁruddha- nalinī-pulina-śriyam

It is inhabited also by karnantra, ekapada, ashvasya and musk deer; and its lotus-fringed sandy banks are made all the more lovely, half-hidden by clusters of plantain trees.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.4.6.22)

paryastaṁ nandayā satyāḥ snāna-puṇyatarodayā vilokya bhūteśa-giriṁ vibudhā vismayaṁ yayuḥ

Beholding that mountain of Bhutesha (Shiva), encircled by the river Nanda, whose waters were made especially sacred because Sati herself had once bathed there, the gods were struck with wonder.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.4.6.23)

dadṛśus tatra te ramyām alakāṁ nāma vai purīm vanaṁ saugandhikaṁ cāpi yatra tan-nāma paṅkajam

There they beheld the beautiful city named Alaka, and also the Saugandhika forest, which took its name from the fragrant lotuses growing there.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.4.6.24)

nandā cālakanandā ca saritau bāhyataḥ puraḥ tīrthapāda-padāmbhoja- rajasātīva pāvane

Outside that city flow the two rivers Nanda and Alakananda, made supremely sacred by the dust of the lotus feet of Bhagavan, the lord whose very feet are a place of pilgrimage.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.4.6.25)

yayoḥ sura-striyaḥ kṣattar avaruhya sva-dhiṣṇyataḥ krīḍanti puṁsaḥ siñcantyo vigāhya rati-karśitāḥ

O Kshatta (Vidura), in those rivers the celestial women, descending from their airborne cars, wearied from love-play with their husbands, dive in and sport, sprinkling the men with water.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.4.6.26)

yayos tat-snāna-vibhraṣṭa- nava-kuṅkuma-piñjaram vitṛṣo ’pi pibanty ambhaḥ pāyayanto gajā gajīḥ

The waters of those rivers, tinged yellow by the fresh kumkum washed from their bathing bodies, are drunk even by elephants who are not thirsty, as they give water also to their mates.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.4.6.27)

tāra-hema-mahāratna- vimāna-śata-saṅkulām juṣṭāṁ puṇyajana-strībhir yathā khaṁ sataḍid-ghanam

That region was thronged with hundreds of aerial cars made of pearls, gold and precious jewels, and filled with the wives of the pious celestial beings, resembling the sky filled with clouds streaked with lightning.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.4.6.28)

hitvā yakṣeśvara-purīṁ vanaṁ saugandhikaṁ ca tat drumaiḥ kāma-dughair hṛdyaṁ citra-mālya-phala-cchadaiḥ

Leaving behind the city of the lord of the Yakshas and that Saugandhika forest — delightful with wish-fulfilling trees bearing wondrous flowers, fruits and foliage —

Verse 29 (bhagavata.4.6.29)

rakta-kaṇṭha-khagānīka- svara-maṇḍita-ṣaṭpadam kalahaṁsa-kula-preṣṭhaṁ kharadaṇḍa-jalāśayam

— where flocks of red-throated birds mingled their song with the humming of bees, and lakes with sturdy-stemmed lotuses were the favorite haunts of flocks of swans —

Verse 30 (bhagavata.4.6.30)

vana-kuñjara-saṅghṛṣṭa- haricandana-vāyunā adhi puṇyajana-strīṇāṁ muhur unmathayan manaḥ

— carrying the fragrance of sandalwood rubbed off by forest elephants, a breeze that again and again stirred the hearts of the pious celestial women —

Verse 31 (bhagavata.4.6.31)

vaidūrya-kṛta-sopānā vāpya utpala-mālinīḥ prāptaṁ kimpuruṣair dṛṣṭvā ta ārād dadṛśur vaṭam

— and passing by ponds with steps of vaidurya-gem, garlanded with lotus flowers, frequented by the Kimpurushas, they at last drew near and beheld a great banyan tree.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.4.6.32)

sa yojana-śatotsedhaḥ pādona-viṭapāyataḥ paryak-kṛtācala-cchāyo nirnīḍas tāpa-varjitaḥ

That tree rose a hundred yojanas high, its branches spreading three-quarters that distance, casting a shade all around that never wavered, unmarked by any bird's nest, and utterly free of heat.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.4.6.33)

tasmin mahā-yogamaye mumukṣu-śaraṇe surāḥ dadṛśuḥ śivam āsīnaṁ tyaktāmarṣam ivāntakam

There, beneath that tree steeped in great yogic power, the refuge of all who seek liberation, the gods beheld Bhagavan Shiv seated — as grave as Death itself, yet now seemingly free of all wrath.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.4.6.34)

sanandanādyair mahā-siddhaiḥ śāntaiḥ saṁśānta-vigraham upāsyamānaṁ sakhyā ca bhartrā guhyaka-rakṣasām

There he sat, his form now perfectly at peace, being attended by the great, tranquil siddhas headed by Sanandana, and by his friend, the lord of the Guhyakas and Rakshasas (Kubera).

Verse 35 (bhagavata.4.6.35)

vidyā-tapo-yoga-patham āsthitaṁ tam adhīśvaram carantaṁ viśva-suhṛdaṁ vātsalyāl loka-maṅgalam

He, the supreme master, ever established on the path of knowledge, austerity and yoga, moved as the true friend of the whole universe, bringing auspiciousness to all the worlds out of pure affection.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.4.6.36)

liṅgaṁ ca tāpasābhīṣṭaṁ bhasma-daṇḍa-jaṭājinam aṅgena sandhyābhra-rucā candra-lekhāṁ ca bibhratam

He bore the very form dear to ascetics — smeared with ashes, holding a staff, his hair matted, clad in deerskin — his body glowing like an evening cloud, and upon his head the crescent moon.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.4.6.37)

upaviṣṭaṁ darbhamayyāṁ bṛsyāṁ brahma sanātanam nāradāya pravocantaṁ pṛcchate śṛṇvatāṁ satām

Seated upon a mat of kusha grass, he was expounding the eternal Brahman to Narada, who had inquired of him, while other saintly persons listened attentively.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.4.6.38)

kṛtvorau dakṣiṇe savyaṁ pāda-padmaṁ ca jānuni bāhuṁ prakoṣṭhe ’kṣa-mālām āsīnaṁ tarka-mudrayā

Seated in that posture with his left lotus foot placed upon his right thigh, his left arm resting on his knee holding a string of rudraksha beads at the wrist, his hand poised in the gesture of discourse —

Verse 39 (bhagavata.4.6.39)

taṁ brahma-nirvāṇa-samādhim āśritaṁ vyupāśritaṁ giriśaṁ yoga-kakṣām sa-loka-pālā munayo manūnām ādyaṁ manuṁ prāñjalayaḥ praṇemuḥ

— thus established in the trance of Brahman-realization, seated in the very posture of yoga, Girisha (Shiva) was reverenced with folded hands by the sages, the guardians of the worlds, and by Manu himself, the first among all the Manus.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.4.6.40)

sa tūpalabhyāgatam ātma-yoniṁ surāsureśair abhivanditāṅghriḥ utthāya cakre śirasābhivandanam arhattamaḥ kasya yathaiva viṣṇuḥ

He, whose feet are worshiped by the very lords of gods and demons, upon perceiving that the self-born Brahma had arrived, at once rose and, though himself most worthy of worship, bowed his head to him — just as Bhagavan Vishnu once bowed to Kashyapa.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.4.6.41)

tathāpare siddha-gaṇā maharṣibhir ye vai samantād anu nīlalohitam namaskṛtaḥ prāha śaśāṅka-śekharaṁ kṛta-praṇāmaṁ prahasann ivātmabhūḥ

The other assembled siddhas and great sages, seated all around Nilalohita (Shiva), likewise offered their obeisances to Brahma; and Atmabhu (Brahma), having received this respect, smilingly addressed Shashankashekhara (Shiva, moon-crested), who had just bowed to him.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.4.6.42)

brahmovāca jāne tvām īśaṁ viśvasya jagato yoni-bījayoḥ śakteḥ śivasya ca paraṁ yat tad brahma nirantaram

Sri Brahma said: I know you to be the lord of the entire universe — the union of Shakti and Shiva, mother and father of this creation — and also that unbroken supreme Brahman that lies beyond all this manifestation.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.4.6.43)

tvam eva bhagavann etac chiva-śaktyoḥ svarūpayoḥ viśvaṁ sṛjasi pāsy atsi krīḍann ūrṇa-paṭo yathā

O Bhagavan, it is you alone who, through the twin forms of Shiva and Shakti, create, sustain and withdraw this universe, playfully, just as a spider spins, maintains, and reabsorbs its web.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.4.6.44)

tvam eva dharmārtha-dughābhipattaye dakṣeṇa sūtreṇa sasarjithādhvaram tvayaiva loke ’vasitāś ca setavo yān brāhmaṇāḥ śraddadhate dhṛta-vratāḥ

It was you alone who, through the agency of Daksha, established the institution of sacrifice, so that the fruits of dharma and artha might be obtained; and it is by you that the bounds of proper conduct in this world have been fixed, which vow-bound brahmanas hold in faith.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.4.6.45)

tvaṁ karmaṇāṁ maṅgala maṅgalānāṁ kartuḥ sva-lokaṁ tanuṣe svaḥ paraṁ vā amaṅgalānāṁ ca tamisram ulbaṇaṁ viparyayaḥ kena tad eva kasyacit

O most auspicious one, to those who perform auspicious deeds you grant the heavenly worlds or the supreme abode beyond; and to those who do inauspicious deeds, a fearsome darkness — yet sometimes the very opposite is seen to occur for someone. By what cause this happens, none can truly say.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.4.6.46)

na vai satāṁ tvac-caraṇārpitātmanāṁ bhūteṣu sarveṣv abhipaśyatāṁ tava bhūtāni cātmany apṛthag-didṛkṣatāṁ prāyeṇa roṣo ’bhibhaved yathā paśum

Those saintly ones who have surrendered their very selves to your feet, who behold your presence in every being, and who see all beings as not different from their own self, are generally never overcome by anger the way an unreasoning animal is.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.4.6.47)

pṛthag-dhiyaḥ karma-dṛśo durāśayāḥ parodayenārpita-hṛd-rujo ’niśam parān duruktair vitudanty aruntudās tān māvadhīd daiva-vadhān bhavad-vidhaḥ

Those of divided mind, who see everything through the lens of fruitive action, evil-minded, whose hearts are ceaselessly wounded by the prosperity of others, and who themselves wound others with cruel, heart-piercing words — such persons are already slain by providence itself. Let not one such as you slay them again.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.4.6.48)

yasmin yadā puṣkara-nābha-māyayā durantayā spṛṣṭa-dhiyaḥ pṛthag-dṛśaḥ kurvanti tatra hy anukampayā kṛpāṁ na sādhavo daiva-balāt kṛte kramam

When someone's mind, touched by the insurmountable maya of Pushkaranabha (Vishnu), sees things with a divided vision and thereby commits some fault, saintly persons show compassion rather than take any action against what has, after all, been brought about by that same divine power.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.4.6.49)

bhavāṁs tu puṁsaḥ paramasya māyayā durantayāspṛṣṭa-matiḥ samasta-dṛk tayā hatātmasv anukarma-cetaḥsv anugrahaṁ kartum ihārhasi prabho

But you, O lord, remain wholly untouched by that same insurmountable maya of the Supreme Person, and you see all things equally; therefore it befits you now to show mercy to those whose minds, overwhelmed by that same maya, remain absorbed in fruitive action.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.4.6.50)

kurv adhvarasyoddharaṇaṁ hatasya bhoḥ tvayāsamāptasya mano prajāpateḥ na yatra bhāgaṁ tava bhāgino daduḥ kuyājino yena makho ninīyate

O lord, please now restore this sacrifice of Prajapati (Daksha), which you have destroyed and left unfinished — for it was the fault of the ill-qualified priests, who withheld from you your rightful share, that has brought the sacrifice to this state.

Verse 51 (bhagavata.4.6.51)

jīvatād yajamāno ’yaṁ prapadyetākṣiṇī bhagaḥ bhṛgoḥ śmaśrūṇi rohantu pūṣṇo dantāś ca pūrvavat

May this sacrificer (Daksha) live again; may Bhaga regain his eyes; may Bhrigu's beard grow back; and may Pushan's teeth be restored, just as before.

Verse 52 (bhagavata.4.6.52)

devānāṁ bhagna-gātrāṇām ṛtvijāṁ cāyudhāśmabhiḥ bhavatānugṛhītānām āśu manyo ’stv anāturam

O Manyu (personification of Shiva's wrath), by your grace may the gods and priests, whose limbs were broken by weapons and stones, quickly be freed from their affliction.

Verse 53 (bhagavata.4.6.53)

eṣa te rudra bhāgo ’stu yad-ucchiṣṭo ’dhvarasya vai yajñas te rudra bhāgena kalpatām adya yajña-han

O Rudra, let this remainder of the sacrifice now be your rightful share; and, O destroyer of the sacrifice, let the sacrifice today be completed at last through your very portion in it.
