Prayers of Jambudvipa's Regions

Chapter 17All chaptersChapter 19

Verse 1 (bhagavata.5.18.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca tathā ca bhadraśravā nāma dharma-sutas tat-kula-patayaḥ puruṣā bhadrāśva-varṣe sākṣād bhagavato vāsudevasya priyāṁ tanuṁ dharmamayīṁ hayaśīrṣābhidhānāṁ parameṇa samādhinā sannidhāpyedam abhigṛṇanta upadhāvanti.

Shukadeva Gosvami said: Likewise, in Bhadrashva-varsha, Bhadrashrava, son of Dharma and lord of that land, together with his people, brings near, through the deepest meditative absorption, that beloved form of Bhagavan Vasudeva Himself known as Hayashirsha, dharma's own embodiment, and worships Him, reciting this hymn.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.5.18.2)

bhadraśravasa ūcuḥ oṁ namo bhagavate dharmāyātma-viśodhanāya nama iti.

Bhadrashrava said: Om. Obeisance to the Blessed Lord Dharma, who purifies the self. Obeisance unto Him.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.5.18.3)

aho vicitraṁ bhagavad-viceṣṭitaṁ ghnantaṁ jano ’yaṁ hi miṣan na paśyati dhyāyann asad yarhi vikarma sevituṁ nirhṛtya putraṁ pitaraṁ jijīviṣati

Ah, how strange is the working of the Lord's illusive power! Though watching it happen before his very eyes, this man does not see it. Even while contemplating some wrong deed, having disposed of his own father or son, he still longs to go on living to enjoy its fruits.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.5.18.4)

vadanti viśvaṁ kavayaḥ sma naśvaraṁ paśyanti cādhyātmavido vipaścitaḥ tathāpi muhyanti tavāja māyayā suvismitaṁ kṛtyam ajaṁ nato ’smi tam

The wise declare this universe to be perishable, and those learned in the knowledge of the self see this too, yet, O unborn Lord, even they are bewildered by Your maya. This deed of Yours is most astonishing indeed; I bow down to You, the unborn one.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.5.18.5)

viśvodbhava-sthāna-nirodha-karma te hy akartur aṅgīkṛtam apy apāvṛtaḥ yuktaṁ na citraṁ tvayi kārya-kāraṇe sarvātmani vyatirikte ca vastutaḥ

Though the work of creating, sustaining and dissolving the universe is attributed to You, You are, in truth, not its doer, and no covering conceals You. This is no wonder in one such as You, who are both cause and effect, the Self of all, and yet, in reality, apart from it all.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.5.18.6)

vedān yugānte tamasā tiraskṛtān rasātalād yo nṛ-turaṅga-vigrahaḥ pratyādade vai kavaye ’bhiyācate tasmai namas te ’vitathehitāya iti

At the end of the age, He who, taking the form of a horse-headed man, recovered from Rasatala the Vedas that darkness had hidden away, and restored them to the sage who implored Him for them, obeisance to Him, whose every undertaking is unfailingly true.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.5.18.7)

hari-varṣe cāpi bhagavān nara-hari-rūpeṇāste; tad-rūpa-grahaṇa-nimittam uttaratrābhidhāsye; tad dayitaṁ rūpaṁ mahā-puruṣa-guṇa-bhājano mahā-bhāgavato daitya-dānava-kula-tīrthīkaraṇa-śīlā-caritaḥ prahlādo ’vyavadhānānanya-bhakti-yogena saha tad-varṣa-puruṣair upāste idaṁ codāharati.

In Hari-varsha too, Bhagavan dwells in the form of the Man-Lion; the reason He assumed that form I shall relate later. That beloved form is worshiped by Prahlada, the great devotee, a vessel of every quality of the Supreme Person, whose very character has made holy the entire line of demons, together with the people of that land, through unbroken and single-minded devotion, and he recites this hymn.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.5.18.8)

oṁ namo bhagavate narasiṁhāya namas tejas-tejase āvir-āvirbhava vajra-nakha vajra-daṁṣṭra karmāśayān randhaya randhaya tamo grasa grasa om svāhā; abhayam abhayam ātmani bhūyiṣṭhā oṁ kṣraum.

Om. Obeisance to Bhagavan Narasimha. Obeisance to the effulgence of effulgences! Manifest Yourself, manifest Yourself! O one with nails of thunderbolt, O one with fangs of thunderbolt, tear apart, tear apart the seat of our fruitive impulses! Devour, devour the darkness of our ignorance! Om, svaha. Let there be, in the self, fearlessness, utter fearlessness. Om, kshraum.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.5.18.9)

svasty astu viśvasya khalaḥ prasīdatāṁ dhyāyantu bhūtāni śivaṁ mitho dhiyā manaś ca bhadraṁ bhajatād adhokṣaje āveśyatāṁ no matir apy ahaitukī

May there be well-being throughout the universe, and may the malicious be pacified. May all beings think auspiciously of one another. May the mind, too, turn to what is truly good and devote itself to the One beyond the senses; and may our understanding become fixed on Him, free of any ulterior motive.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.5.18.10)

māgāra-dārātmaja-vitta-bandhuṣu saṅgo yadi syād bhagavat-priyeṣu naḥ yaḥ prāṇa-vṛttyā parituṣṭa ātmavān siddhyaty adūrān na tathendriya-priyaḥ

If we must feel attachment, to home, wife, children, wealth and kin, then let it be, instead, to those who are dear to the Lord. One who is self-possessed and satisfied simply with what sustains the life-breath attains perfection swiftly; not so one who is fond of sense-pleasure.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.5.18.11)

yat-saṅga-labdhaṁ nija-vīrya-vaibhavaṁ tīrthaṁ muhuḥ saṁspṛśatāṁ hi mānasam haraty ajo ’ntaḥ śrutibhir gato ’ṅgajaṁ ko vai na seveta mukunda-vikramam

That treasure of His own power, won through the company of devotees, the unborn Lord, entering by way of the ears, again and again washes away the impurity within the hearts of those who thus repeatedly touch this holy place. Who, then, would not serve the mighty deeds of Mukunda?

Verse 12 (bhagavata.5.18.12)

yasyāsti bhaktir bhagavaty akiñcanā sarvair guṇais tatra samāsate surāḥ harāv abhaktasya kuto mahad-guṇā manorathenāsati dhāvato bahiḥ

In one who has unalloyed devotion to Bhagavan, every good quality, together with the gods themselves, comes to dwell. But in one devoid of devotion to Hari, how can there be any true excellence, he who runs after unreal things outside himself, driven by nothing but the whims of his own mind?

Verse 13 (bhagavata.5.18.13)

harir hi sākṣād bhagavān śarīriṇām ātmā jhaṣāṇām iva toyam īpsitam hitvā mahāṁs taṁ yadi sajjate gṛhe tadā mahattvaṁ vayasā dampatīnām

Hari alone is, in truth, the very Self of every embodied being, just as water is what fish long for above all. If a person of great stature, forsaking Him, clings instead to household life, then his greatness amounts to no more than that of an inexperienced young couple.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.5.18.14)

tasmād rajo-rāga-viṣāda-manyu- māna-spṛhā-bhayadainyādhimūlam hitvā gṛhaṁ saṁsṛti-cakravālaṁ nṛsiṁha-pādaṁ bhajatākutobhayam iti

Therefore, having given up the household, the very wheel of worldly transmigration and the root of passion, attachment, despair, anger, pride, craving, fear and wretchedness, one should worship the feet of Narasimha, which alone grant fearlessness from every side.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.5.18.15)

ketumāle ’pi bhagavān kāmadeva-svarūpeṇa lakṣmyāḥ priya-cikīrṣayā prajāpater duhitṝṇāṁ putrāṇāṁ tad-varṣa-patīnāṁ puruṣāyuṣāho-rātra-parisaṅkhyānānāṁ yāsāṁ garbhā mahā-puruṣa-mahāstra-tejasodvejita-manasāṁ vidhvastā vyasavaḥ saṁvatsarānte vinipatanti.

In Ketumala-varsha too, Bhagavan dwells in the form of Kamadeva, for the pleasure of Lakshmi. There, the sons and daughters of Prajapati Samvatsara, the rulers of that land who are reckoned as the days and nights of a human lifetime, worship Him, daughters whose wombs, their minds thrown into agitation by the splendor of the Great Person's mighty weapon, miscarry at the end of every year, the unborn child destroyed and lifeless.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.5.18.16)

atīva sulalita-gati-vilāsa-vilasita-rucira-hāsa-leśāvaloka-līlayā kiñcid-uttambhita-sundara-bhrū-maṇḍala-subhaga-vadanāravinda-śriyā ramāṁ ramayann indriyāṇi ramayate.

By the play of a glance touched with a faint and graceful smile born of His gentle, playful movements, and by the beauty of His lotus face, made lovelier still as He slightly arches His exquisite brows, He delights Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, and in delighting her, delights the senses of all.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.5.18.17)

tad bhagavato māyāmayaṁ rūpaṁ parama-samādhi-yogena ramā devī saṁvatsarasya rātriṣu prajāpater duhitṛbhir upetāhaḥsu ca tad-bhartṛbhir upāste idaṁ codāharati.

That manifest form of the Lord, goddess Rama worships in the deepest meditative absorption, during the nights of the year's cycle together with the daughters of Prajapati, and during the days together with their husbands, the sons of Prajapati. And she recites this hymn.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.5.18.18)

om hrāṁ hrīṁ hrūṁ oṁ namo bhagavate hṛṣīkeśāya sarva-guṇa-viśeṣair vilakṣitātmane ākūtīnāṁ cittīnāṁ cetasāṁ viśeṣāṇāṁ cādhipataye ṣoḍaśa-kalāya cchando-mayāyānna-mayāyāmṛta-mayāya sarva-mayāya sahase ojase balāya kāntāya kāmāya namas te ubhayatra bhūyāt.

Om hram hrim hrum. Om, obeisance to Bhagavan Hrishikesha, whose very self is distinguished by every quality, master of intention, of the states of consciousness, and of the varieties of mind; possessed of sixteen parts, composed of the sacred meters, of food, of nectar, of all things. Obeisance to strength, to vigor, to power, to the beloved, to desire, obeisance to You. May this be so for us in both worlds.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.5.18.19)

striyo vratais tvā hṛṣīkeśvaraṁ svato hy ārādhya loke patim āśāsate ’nyam tāsāṁ na te vai paripānty apatyaṁ priyaṁ dhanāyūṁṣi yato ’sva-tantrāḥ

Women worship You, the very master of the senses, self-sufficient in Yourself, through their religious vows, and yet still hope for some other husband in this world. But such a husband, for such women, can never truly protect their beloved children, their wealth, or their span of life, since he himself is not independent.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.5.18.20)

sa vai patiḥ syād akutobhayaḥ svayaṁ samantataḥ pāti bhayāturaṁ janam sa eka evetarathā mitho bhayaṁ naivātmalābhād adhi manyate param

He alone, Himself free from all fear, who protects the fear-stricken on every side, can truly be called a husband. He alone, for were it otherwise, there would be fear between the two; and He regards nothing as superior to the attainment of His own Self.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.5.18.21)

yā tasya te pāda-saroruhārhaṇaṁ nikāmayet sākhila-kāma-lampaṭā tad eva rāsīpsitam īpsito ’rcito yad-bhagna-yācñā bhagavan pratapyate

The woman who longs only for the worship of Your lotus feet, even if in every other way given over to desire, receives from You exactly what she seeks; and she who worships You for some worldly object likewise attains her desire and is thereby honored as fulfilled. But once her petition is granted, O Lord, she is left burning with regret.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.5.18.22)

mat-prāptaye ’jeśa-surāsurādayas tapyanta ugraṁ tapa aindriye dhiyaḥ ṛte bhavat-pāda-parāyaṇān na māṁ vindanty ahaṁ tvad-dhṛdayā yato ’jita

O unconquerable, unborn Lord, to attain me, both gods and demons undertake severe austerities, though their minds remain fixed on sense-objects. But apart from those devoted wholly to Your feet, none find me, for I dwell within the heart of Your devotee alone, O Unconquered One.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.5.18.23)

sa tvaṁ mamāpy acyuta śīrṣṇi vanditaṁ karāmbujaṁ yat tvad-adhāyi sātvatām bibharṣi māṁ lakṣma vareṇya māyayā ka īśvarasyehitam ūhituṁ vibhur iti

O infallible one, that lotus hand of Yours, which You place, in mercy, upon the heads of Your devotees who worship it, bear it, I pray, upon my head as well. Though I bear Your mark upon Your breast, O most excellent Lord, I regard it, by Your illusive power, as no more than false pride, for who can truly fathom the intent of the Supreme Controller?

Verse 24 (bhagavata.5.18.24)

ramyake ca bhagavataḥ priyatamaṁ mātsyam avatāra-rūpaṁ tad-varṣa-puruṣasya manoḥ prāk-pradarśitaṁ sa idānīm api mahatā bhakti-yogenārādhayatīdaṁ codāharati.

In Ramyaka-varsha, Manu, the ruler of that land, to whom Bhagavan's most beloved Fish-incarnation was earlier revealed, worships that form even now with great devotion, and recites this hymn.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.5.18.25)

oṁ namo bhagavate mukhyatamāya namaḥ sattvāya prāṇāyaujase sahase balāya mahā-matsyāya nama iti.

Om, obeisance to the most excellent Bhagavan. Obeisance to the very essence of being, to the breath of life, to vigor, to might, to strength, obeisance to the great fish incarnation. Obeisance to Him.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.5.18.26)

antar bahiś cākhila-loka-pālakair adṛṣṭa-rūpo vicarasy uru-svanaḥ sa īśvaras tvaṁ ya idaṁ vaśe ’nayan nāmnā yathā dārumayīṁ naraḥ striyam

Within and without, unseen even by all the guardians of the worlds, You move about, Your presence resounding mightily. You are the Controller who, by name alone, brings this whole creation under Your rule, as a man might control a wooden doll fashioned to resemble a wife.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.5.18.27)

yaṁ loka-pālāḥ kila matsara-jvarā hitvā yatanto ’pi pṛthak sametya ca pātuṁ na śekur dvi-padaś catuṣ-padaḥ sarīsṛpaṁ sthāṇu yad atra dṛśyate

You whom the guardians of the worlds, though consumed with envy and striving both apart and together, could still never manage to protect in Your place, whether the two-footed, the four-footed, or any creeping or rooted thing seen in this world.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.5.18.28)

bhavān yugāntārṇava ūrmi-mālini kṣoṇīm imām oṣadhi-vīrudhāṁ nidhim mayā sahoru kramate ’ja ojasā tasmai jagat-prāṇa-gaṇātmane nama iti

O unborn Lord, at the ocean that engulfed the world at the end of the age, garlanded with waves, You bore up this earth, the storehouse of every herb and plant, and roamed with mighty speed, carrying me along with You. Obeisance to You, who are the very life-breath of the universe.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.5.18.29)

hiraṇmaye ’pi bhagavān nivasati kūrma-tanuṁ bibhrāṇas tasya tat priyatamāṁ tanum aryamā saha varṣa-puruṣaiḥ pitṛ-gaṇādhipatir upadhāvati mantram imaṁ cānujapati.

In Hiranmaya-varsha too, Bhagavan dwells, bearing the form of a tortoise. Aryama, the lord of the ancestral spirits, together with the people of that land, worships that most beloved form of His, softly murmuring this mantra.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.5.18.30)

oṁ namo bhagavate akūpārāya sarva-sattva-guṇa-viśeṣaṇāyānu-palakṣita-sthānāya namo varṣmaṇe namo bhūmne namo namo ’vasthānāya namas te.

Om, obeisance to Bhagavan, the shoreless one, marked by every quality of pure being, whose true dwelling cannot be perceived. Obeisance to Your greatness, obeisance to Your vastness, obeisance, obeisance to Your state of rest. Obeisance to You.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.5.18.31)

This form of Yours, bestowed by Your own creative power, though seeming to be a real object in itself, is manifested in countless shapes; and because it cannot truly be reckoned through the improper vision of the senses, obeisance to You, whose actual form lies beyond all designation.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.5.18.32)

jarāyujaṁ svedajam aṇḍajodbhidaṁ carācaraṁ devarṣi-pitṛ-bhūtam aindriyam dyauḥ khaṁ kṣitiḥ śaila-sarit-samudra- dvīpa-graharkṣety abhidheya ekaḥ

Beings born from the womb, born from sweat, born from the egg, or sprouted from the earth; moving and unmoving things, gods, sages, ancestors and all creatures, together with the objects of the senses; the heavens, outer space, the earth with its mountains, rivers, oceans and islands, the planets and the stars, though called by many names, all this is but one: You alone.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.5.18.33)

yasminn asaṅkhyeya-viśeṣa-nāma- rūpākṛtau kavibhiḥ kalpiteyam saṅkhyā yayā tattva-dṛśāpanīyate tasmai namaḥ sāṅkhya-nidarśanāya te iti

This creation, with its countless distinct names, forms and shapes, has been fashioned by the wise as a means of understanding, that same reckoning by which one who sees the truth sets aside the illusion of multiplicity. Obeisance to You, the very demonstration of Sankhya philosophy.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.5.18.34)

uttareṣu ca kuruṣu bhagavān yajña-puruṣaḥ kṛta-varāha-rūpa āste taṁ tu devī haiṣā bhūḥ saha kurubhir askhalita-bhakti-yogenopadhāvati imāṁ ca paramām upaniṣadam āvartayati.

And in Uttara Kuru, Bhagavan Yajnapurusha resides, having taken the form of the Boar. There, goddess Bhu, the Earth herself, together with the Kurus, worships Him with unwavering devotion, repeatedly reciting this most excellent Upanishadic hymn.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.5.18.35)

oṁ namo bhagavate mantra-tattva-liṅgāya yajña-kratave mahā-dhvarāvayavāya mahā-puruṣāya namaḥ karma-śuklāya tri-yugāya namas te.

Om, obeisance to Bhagavan, whose very sign is the essence of the sacred mantras, who is Himself the sacrifice and its performance, whose limbs are the great sacrificial rites, the Supreme Person. Obeisance to Him who is made pure through righteous action, who is known as Tri-yuga. Obeisance to You.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.5.18.36)

yasya svarūpaṁ kavayo vipaścito guṇeṣu dāruṣv iva jāta-vedasam mathnanti mathnā manasā didṛkṣavo gūḍhaṁ kriyārthair nama īritātmane

Just as one who wishes to see the fire hidden within wood brings it forth by the churning of the fire-stick, so too the wise, desiring to behold You concealed within the material qualities, churn with the mind, seeking You through the purpose of ritual action. Obeisance to that Self who is thus pointed to, though never fully grasped.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.5.18.37)

dravya-kriyā-hetv-ayaneśa-kartṛbhir māyā-guṇair vastu-nirīkṣitātmane anvīkṣayāṅgātiśayātma-buddhibhir nirasta-māyākṛtaye namo namaḥ

The objects of enjoyment, the workings of the senses, the deities who govern them, the body, time and ego, all these are creations of Your maya. Yet those whose intelligence, through careful inquiry, comes to exceed the ordinary self behold You as the silent witness standing behind them all, Your true form untouched by that same maya. Obeisance, obeisance to You.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.5.18.38)

karoti viśva-sthiti-saṁyamodayaṁ yasyepsitaṁ nepsitam īkṣitur guṇaiḥ māyā yathāyo bhramate tad-āśrayaṁ grāvṇo namas te guṇa-karma-sākṣiṇe

He by whose mere will, sought or unsought by the qualities of the one who perceives, brings about the world's maintenance, restraint and arising; and maya, bound to Him as its support, moves as iron moves under the influence of a lodestone. Obeisance to You, the witness of all qualities and deeds.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.5.18.39)

pramathya daityaṁ prativāraṇaṁ mṛdhe yo māṁ rasāyā jagad-ādi-sūkaraḥ kṛtvāgra-daṁṣṭre niragād udanvataḥ krīḍann ivebhaḥ praṇatāsmi taṁ vibhum iti

Having crushed in battle the demon who opposed You, You, the primeval Boar of the universe, lifted me upon the tip of Your tusk and rose up out of the depths of the ocean, playful as an elephant carrying a lotus. I bow down to You, the all-pervading Lord.
