The Geography of Jambudvipa

Chapter 18All chaptersChapter 20

Verse 1 (bhagavata.5.19.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca kimpuruṣe varṣe bhagavantam ādi-puruṣaṁ lakṣmaṇāgrajaṁ sītābhirāmaṁ rāmaṁ tac-caraṇa-sannikarṣābhirataḥ parama-bhāgavato hanumān saha kimpuruṣair avirata-bhaktir upāste.

In Kimpurusha-varsha, the supreme devotee Hanuman, given over entirely to nearness to the feet of the primeval Lord Rama, elder brother of Lakshmana and beloved of Sita, worships Him together with the Kimpurushas, his devotion never ceasing.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.5.19.2)

ārṣṭiṣeṇena saha gandharvair anugīyamānāṁ parama-kalyāṇīṁ bhartṛ-bhagavat-kathāṁ samupaśṛṇoti svayaṁ cedaṁ gāyati.

Together with Arshtishena, he continually listens to the supremely auspicious narrative of his Lord, sung by the Gandharvas, and himself sings this hymn.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.5.19.3)

oṁ namo bhagavate uttamaślokāya nama ārya-lakṣaṇa-śīla-vratāya nama upaśikṣitātmana upāsita-lokāya namaḥ sādhu-vāda-nikaṣaṇāya namo brahmaṇya-devāya mahā-puruṣāya mahā-rājāya nama iti.

Om, obeisance to Bhagavan, of excellent renown; obeisance to Him whose character, conduct and vow are noble, whose self is perfectly disciplined, and who is worshiped by the whole world; obeisance to Him who is the touchstone by which true praise is tested; obeisance to the God of the brahmanas, the Supreme Person, the Great King. Obeisance to Him.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.5.19.4)

yat tad viśuddhānubhava-mātram ekaṁ sva-tejasā dhvasta-guṇa-vyavastham pratyak praśāntaṁ sudhiyopalambhanaṁ hy anāma-rūpaṁ nirahaṁ prapadye

That which is pure experience alone, one without a second, which by its own radiance has dissolved every arrangement of the material qualities, inwardly at peace, perceivable only by the pure of mind, without name or form, without ego, in that Reality I take refuge.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.5.19.5)

martyāvatāras tv iha martya-śikṣaṇaṁ rakṣo-vadhāyaiva na kevalaṁ vibhoḥ kuto ’nyathā syād ramataḥ sva ātmanaḥ sītā-kṛtāni vyasanānīśvarasya

The Lord's mortal incarnation here was meant for the instruction of mortal beings, and not for the killing of the Rakshasa alone; for how else could the self-sufficient Ishvara, who delights within His own Self, have been touched by the tribulations that came to Him through Sita?

Verse 6 (bhagavata.5.19.6)

He, Bhagavan Vasudeva, the very Self and dearest friend of the self-realized, is never truly attached within the three worlds; He could not truly suffer the anguish caused by attachment to a woman, nor could He ever bring Himself to forsake Lakshmana.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.5.19.7)

na janma nūnaṁ mahato na saubhagaṁ na vāṅ na buddhir nākṛtis toṣa-hetuḥ tair yad visṛṣṭān api no vanaukasaś cakāra sakhye bata lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ

Surely it is not noble birth, nor good fortune, nor eloquence, nor intelligence, nor bodily beauty that wins His favor, for even though we forest-dwellers possess none of these, the elder brother of Lakshmana accepted us, marvelously, in friendship.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.5.19.8)

suro ’suro vāpy atha vānaro naraḥ sarvātmanā yaḥ sukṛtajñam uttamam bhajeta rāmaṁ manujākṛtiṁ hariṁ ya uttarān anayat kosalān divam iti

Whether god or demon, monkey or man, whoever worships, with his whole being, Rama, who knows and rewards even the smallest good deed, the most excellent one, Hari in human form, who led the people of Kosala up to the highest heaven, attains Him.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.5.19.9)

bhārate ’pi varṣe bhagavān nara-nārāyaṇākhya ākalpāntam upacita-dharma-jñāna-vairāgyaiśvaryopaśamoparamātmopalambhanam anugrahāyātmavatām anukampayā tapo ’vyakta-gatiś carati.

In Bharata-varsha too, Bhagavan, known as Nara-Narayana, having gathered to perfection dharma, knowledge, renunciation and spiritual opulence, practices austerity in an unmanifest way until the end of the kalpa, out of compassion, so as to bestow upon self-controlled devotees the attainment of peace and true self-realization.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.5.19.10)

taṁ bhagavān nārado varṇāśramavatībhir bhāratībhiḥ prajābhir bhagavat-proktābhyāṁ sāṅkhya-yogābhyāṁ bhagavad-anubhāvopavarṇanaṁ sāvarṇer upadekṣyamāṇaḥ parama-bhakti-bhāvenopasarati idaṁ cābhigṛṇāti.

To him, Bhagavan Narada, wishing to teach Savarni Manu, for the sake of Bharata-varsha's people who follow the divisions of varna and ashrama, how to glorify the Lord through the Sankhya and Yoga that the Lord Himself has taught, draws near with the deepest devotion, and recites this hymn.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.5.19.11)

oṁ namo bhagavate upaśama-śīlāyoparatānātmyāya namo ’kiñcana-vittāya ṛṣi-ṛṣabhāya nara-nārāyaṇāya paramahaṁsa-parama-gurave ātmārāmādhipataye namo nama iti.

Om, obeisance to Bhagavan, whose very nature is peace, free of any sense of a separate self; obeisance to Him who is the wealth of those who possess nothing; obeisance to Nara-Narayana, foremost among sages, supreme teacher of the paramahamsas, Lord of those who delight in the Self. Obeisance, obeisance to Him.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.5.19.12)

gāyati cedam — kartāsya sargādiṣu yo na badhyate na hanyate deha-gato ’pi daihikaiḥ draṣṭur na dṛg yasya guṇair vidūṣyate tasmai namo ’sakta-vivikta-sākṣiṇe

And he sings this: To Him who, though the doer of creation and all the rest, is never bound by it; who, though embodied, is never slain by the body's afflictions; whose seeing is never stained by the qualities of what He sees, obeisance to Him, the unattached, pure witness.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.5.19.13)

idaṁ hi yogeśvara yoga-naipuṇaṁ hiraṇyagarbho bhagavāñ jagāda yat yad anta-kāle tvayi nirguṇe mano bhaktyā dadhītojjhita-duṣkalevaraḥ

O Lord of yoga, this indeed is the very skill in yoga that Lord Brahma himself declared: that at the time of death, having cast off this wretched body, one should fix the mind upon You, the unqualified Absolute, through devotion.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.5.19.14)

yathaihikāmuṣmika-kāma-lampaṭaḥ suteṣu dāreṣu dhaneṣu cintayan śaṅketa vidvān kukalevarātyayād yas tasya yatnaḥ śrama eva kevalam

Just as one greedy for pleasure both here and hereafter, forever anxious over children, wife and wealth, dreads the loss of this wretched body, so too, if a learned man remains just as attached, all his effort in spiritual study amounts to nothing but fruitless labor.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.5.19.15)

tan naḥ prabho tvaṁ kukalevarārpitāṁ tvan-māyayāhaṁ-mamatām adhokṣaja bhindyāma yenāśu vayaṁ sudurbhidāṁ vidhehi yogaṁ tvayi naḥ svabhāvam iti

Therefore, O Lord beyond the senses, grant that through You alone we may swiftly break this most stubborn knot of 'I' and 'mine,' imposed by Your maya upon this wretched body; and grant us union with You, which alone is our true nature.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.5.19.16)

bhārate ’py asmin varṣe saric-chailāḥ santi bahavo malayo maṅgala-prastho mainākas trikūṭa ṛṣabhaḥ kūṭakaḥ kollakaḥ sahyo devagirir ṛṣyamūkaḥ śrī-śailo veṅkaṭo mahendro vāridhāro vindhyaḥ śuktimān ṛkṣagiriḥ pāriyātro droṇaś citrakūṭo govardhano raivatakaḥ kakubho nīlo gokāmukha indrakīlaḥ kāmagirir iti cānye ca śata-sahasraśaḥ śailās teṣāṁ nitamba-prabhavā nadā nadyaś ca santy asaṅkhyātāḥ.

In this Bharata-varsha too there are many mountains and rivers, mountains such as Malaya, Mangala-prastha, Mainaka, Trikuta, Rishabha, Kutaka, Kollaka, Sahya, Devagiri, Rishyamuka, Shri-shaila, Venkata, Mahendra, Varidhara, Vindhya, Shuktiman, Rikshagiri, Pariyatra, Drona, Chitrakuta, Govardhana, Raivataka, Kakubha, Nila, Gokamukha, Indrakila, Kamagiri, and hundreds of thousands of others besides, from whose slopes rise countless rivers, both great and small.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.5.19.17)

etāsām apo bhāratyaḥ prajā nāmabhir eva punantīnām ātmanā copaspṛśanti;

The people of Bharata purify themselves by touching, in person, the waters of these rivers, which purify by their very names alone.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.5.19.18)

candravasā tāmraparṇī avaṭodā kṛtamālā vaihāyasī kāverī veṇī payasvinī śarkarāvartā tuṅgabhadrā kṛṣṇāveṇyā bhīmarathī godāvarī nirvindhyā payoṣṇī tāpī revā surasā narmadā carmaṇvatī sindhur andhaḥ śoṇaś ca nadau mahānadī vedasmṛtir ṛṣikulyā trisāmā kauśikī mandākinī yamunā sarasvatī dṛṣadvatī gomatī sarayū rodhasvatī saptavatī suṣomā śatadrūś candrabhāgā marudvṛdhā vitastā asiknī viśveti mahā-nadyaḥ.

Their names are these great rivers: Chandravasa, Tamraparni, Avatoda, Kritamala, Vaihayasi, Kaveri, Veni, Payasvini, Sharkaravarta, Tungabhadra, Krishnavenya, Bhimarathi, Godavari, Nirvindhya, Payoshni, Tapi, Reva, Surasa, Narmada, Charmanvati, the two great streams Sindhu and Shona, Mahanadi, Vedasmriti, Rishikulya, Trisama, Kaushiki, Mandakini, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Drishadvati, Gomati, Sarayu, Rodhasvati, Saptavati, Sushoma, Shatadru, Chandrabhaga, Marudvridha, Vitasta, Asikni, and Vishva.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.5.19.19)

asminn eva varṣe puruṣair labdha-janmabhiḥ śukla-lohita-kṛṣṇa-varṇena svārabdhena karmaṇā divya-mānuṣa-nāraka-gatayo bahvya ātmana ānupūrvyeṇa sarvā hy eva sarveṣāṁ vidhīyante yathā-varṇa-vidhānam apavargaś cāpi bhavati.

In this very land, people who take birth here, through the actions of their own undertaking, marked by the white, red or black of the material modes, have divine, human or hellish destinies of the self ordained for them in due order, each according to the proper arrangement of his varna; and here, too, liberation becomes possible.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.5.19.20)

yo ’sau bhagavati sarva-bhūtātmany anātmye ’nirukte ’nilayane paramātmani vāsudeve ’nanya-nimitta-bhakti-yoga-lakṣaṇo nānā-gati-nimittāvidyā-granthi-randhana-dvāreṇa yadā hi mahā-puruṣa-puruṣa-prasaṅgaḥ.

That form of devotion which has no cause beyond itself, directed toward the Supreme Person, Vasudeva, the Self of all beings, free of any material self, beyond description, without material abode, becomes attainable when, by an opening that breaks apart the knot of ignorance responsible for one's varied destinies, one comes into contact with the devotees of the Great Person.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.5.19.21)

etad eva hi devā gāyanti — aho amīṣāṁ kim akāri śobhanaṁ prasanna eṣāṁ svid uta svayaṁ hariḥ yair janma labdhaṁ nṛṣu bhāratājire mukunda-sevaupayikaṁ spṛhā hi naḥ

This very truth the gods themselves sing: Ah, what auspicious deed indeed have these people done, or has Hari Himself simply grown pleased with them, that they have obtained birth among men in the very arena of Bharata, a birth fit for the service of Mukunda, a thing for which we ourselves still long?

Verse 22 (bhagavata.5.19.22)

kiṁ duṣkarair naḥ kratubhis tapo-vratair dānādibhir vā dyujayena phalgunā na yatra nārāyaṇa-pāda-paṅkaja- smṛtiḥ pramuṣṭātiśayendriyotsavāt

What use to us are difficult sacrifices, austerities, vows, acts of charity, or our conquest, however slight, of heaven itself, if in that state remembrance of Narayana's lotus feet is entirely swept away by the excess of sensory delight?

Verse 23 (bhagavata.5.19.23)

kalpāyuṣāṁ sthānajayāt punar-bhavāt kṣaṇāyuṣāṁ bhārata-bhūjayo varam kṣaṇena martyena kṛtaṁ manasvinaḥ sannyasya saṁyānty abhayaṁ padaṁ hareḥ

Better a brief life spent conquering one's attachment to one's place in the land of Bharata than a life lasting an entire kalpa that only ends in rebirth. The wise, having in but a single moment renounced whatever mortal deeds they have done, pass on to Hari's fearless abode.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.5.19.24)

Where the nectar-river of Vaikuntha's tales does not flow, where saintly devotees do not take shelter beside it, where there are no great festivals of sacrifice to the Lord of sacrifice, that place, even if it be the abode of Indra himself, should not be sought after.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.5.19.25)

prāptā nṛ-jātiṁ tv iha ye ca jantavo jñāna-kriyā-dravya-kalāpa-sambhṛtām na vai yaterann apunar-bhavāya te bhūyo vanaukā iva yānti bandhanam

Those beings who attain, here in Bharata-varsha, the human birth, endowed with the full assembly of knowledge, right action and the means to use them, if they fail to strive for freedom from rebirth, fall back again into bondage, like forest creatures that wander carelessly back into the snare.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.5.19.26)

yaiḥ śraddhayā barhiṣi bhāgaśo havir niruptam iṣṭaṁ vidhi-mantra-vastutaḥ ekaḥ pṛthaṅ-nāmabhir āhuto mudā gṛhṇāti pūrṇaḥ svayam āśiṣāṁ prabhuḥ

Those who, with faith, lay their oblation upon the sacred grass, portion by portion, duly offered according to rite, mantra and substance, though they invoke it under separate and different names, it is the one, complete Lord Himself who gladly accepts each offering, He who is the sole master granting every blessing.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.5.19.27)

satyaṁ diśaty arthitam arthito nṛṇāṁ naivārthado yat punar arthitā yataḥ svayaṁ vidhatte bhajatām anicchatām icchāpidhānaṁ nija-pāda-pallavam

To men who ask, He truly grants what they ask for, yet He is not, in truth, a giver of mere wealth, since such giving only leads to asking again. But to those who worship without desiring anything at all, He bestows, of His own accord, His own tender lotus feet, which cover over every further desire.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.5.19.28)

yady atra naḥ svarga-sukhāvaśeṣitaṁ sviṣṭasya sūktasya kṛtasya śobhanam tenājanābhe smṛtimaj janma naḥ syād varṣe harir yad-bhajatāṁ śaṁ tanoti

If any good remnant of merit still remains to us here from a sacrifice well performed, a hymn well recited, or other good deeds done, then by that merit may we be born, endowed with memory of the Lord, in Ajanabha-varsha, where Hari extends well-being upon all who worship Him.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.5.19.29)

śrī-śuka uvāca jambūdvīpasya ca rājann upadvīpān aṣṭau haika upadiśanti sagarātmajair aśvānveṣaṇa imāṁ mahīṁ parito nikhanadbhir upakalpitān;

Shukadeva said: And of Jambudvipa, O King, some learned teachers describe eight smaller islands, formed when the sons of Sagara, searching for the sacrificial horse, dug up the whole of this earth all around.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.5.19.30)

tad yathā svarṇaprasthaś candraśukla āvartano ramaṇako mandarahariṇaḥ pāñcajanyaḥ siṁhalo laṅketi.

Their names are these: Svarnaprastha, Chandrashukla, Avartana, Ramanaka, Mandara-harina, Panchajanya, Simhala and Lanka.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.5.19.31)

evaṁ tava bhāratottama jambūdvīpa-varṣa-vibhāgo yathopadeśam upavarṇita iti.

Thus, O best of the Bharatas, the division of Jambudvipa's lands has been described to you, just as it was taught to me.
