Skandha 6 · Chapter 4
The Hamsa-guhya Prayers of Prajapati Daksha
Verse 1 (bhagavata.6.4.1)
śrī-rājovāca devāsura-nṛṇāṁ sargo nāgānāṁ mṛga-pakṣiṇām sāmāsikas tvayā prokto yas tu svāyambhuve ’ntare
The king said: My lord, you have briefly described to me the creation of the demigods, demons, human beings, serpents, beasts and birds that took place during the reign of Svayambhuva Manu.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.6.4.2)
tasyaiva vyāsam icchāmi jñātuṁ te bhagavan yathā anusargaṁ yayā śaktyā sasarja bhagavān paraḥ
My lord, I wish now to know that same creation in full detail, and also to learn by what potency the Supreme Personality of Godhead brought about this subsequent creation.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.6.4.3)
śrī-sūta uvāca iti sampraśnam ākarṇya rājarṣer bādarāyaṇiḥ pratinandya mahā-yogī jagāda muni-sattamāḥ
Shri Suta said: O best of sages, having heard this question from the royal sage Parikshit, the great yogi Badarayani praised it and then spoke as follows.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.6.4.4)
śrī-śuka uvāca yadā pracetasaḥ putrā daśa prācīnabarhiṣaḥ antaḥ-samudrād unmagnā dadṛśur gāṁ drumair vṛtām
Shri Shuka said: When the ten sons of Prachinabarhi, the Pracheta brothers, emerged from within the ocean, they saw the earth entirely covered with trees.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.6.4.5)
drumebhyaḥ krudhyamānās te tapo-dīpita-manyavaḥ mukhato vāyum agniṁ ca sasṛjus tad-didhakṣayā
Enraged at the trees, their fury inflamed by long austerity, they produced wind and fire from their very mouths, intent on burning them all to ashes.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.6.4.6)
tābhyāṁ nirdahyamānāṁs tān upalabhya kurūdvaha rājovāca mahān somo manyuṁ praśamayann iva
O best of the Kurus, seeing the trees being consumed by that wind and fire, the great Soma, king of the trees, spoke as follows, as though to calm their anger.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.6.4.7)
na drumebhyo mahā-bhāgā dīnebhyo drogdhum arhatha vivardhayiṣavo yūyaṁ prajānāṁ patayaḥ smṛtāḥ
O most fortunate ones, you should not harm these helpless trees, for you are known as the protectors meant to foster and increase your subjects.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.6.4.8)
aho prajāpati-patir bhagavān harir avyayaḥ vanaspatīn oṣadhīś ca sasarjorjam iṣaṁ vibhuḥ
Ah, the imperishable Lord Hari, master of all the prajapatis, the all-powerful one, created these trees and herbs as nourishing, strength-giving food.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.6.4.9)
annaṁ carāṇām acarā hy apadaḥ pāda-cāriṇām ahastā hasta-yuktānāṁ dvi-padāṁ ca catuṣ-padaḥ
The unmoving are food for the moving; those without legs are food for those with legs; those without hands are food for those with hands; and the four-legged are food for the two-legged.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.6.4.10)
yūyaṁ ca pitrānvādiṣṭā deva-devena cānaghāḥ prajā-sargāya hi kathaṁ vṛkṣān nirdagdhum arhatha
O sinless ones, both your father and the Lord of lords have instructed you to bring forth and increase progeny — how, then, can you rightly go on burning these trees?
Verse 11 (bhagavata.6.4.11)
ātiṣṭhata satāṁ mārgaṁ kopaṁ yacchata dīpitam pitrā pitāmahenāpi juṣṭaṁ vaḥ prapitāmahaiḥ
Follow the path walked by the virtuous, and hold back this inflamed anger of yours — the very path followed by your father, your grandfather, and your great-grandfathers before them.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.6.4.12)
tokānāṁ pitarau bandhū dṛśaḥ pakṣma striyāḥ patiḥ patiḥ prajānāṁ bhikṣūṇāṁ gṛhy ajñānāṁ budhaḥ suhṛt
As parents are friends to their children, as the eyelid guards the eye, as the husband protects his wife, as the householder shelters beggars, and as the wise befriend the ignorant — so should a protector act toward those under his care.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.6.4.13)
antar deheṣu bhūtānām ātmāste harir īśvaraḥ sarvaṁ tad-dhiṣṇyam īkṣadhvam evaṁ vas toṣito hy asau
Within the bodies of all beings dwells Hari, the Supreme Lord Himself, as the indwelling Self. Regard every body as His own dwelling place — in this way He will be pleased with you.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.6.4.14)
yaḥ samutpatitaṁ deha ākāśān manyum ulbaṇam ātma-jijñāsayā yacchet sa guṇān ativartate
One who, through inquiry into the self, restrains that powerful anger which arises suddenly in the body as though falling from the sky, thereby transcends the material modes of nature.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.6.4.15)
alaṁ dagdhair drumair dīnaiḥ khilānāṁ śivam astu vaḥ vārkṣī hy eṣā varā kanyā patnītve pratigṛhyatām
Enough now of burning these helpless trees; may good fortune attend those that remain. Here is an excellent maiden, raised by the trees themselves — accept her as your wife.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.6.4.16)
ity āmantrya varārohāṁ kanyām āpsarasīṁ nṛpa somo rājā yayau dattvā te dharmeṇopayemire
O king, having spoken thus, King Soma gave them that lovely maiden, born of an Apsara, and then departed; the Pracheta brothers married her according to proper religious rites.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.6.4.17)
tebhyas tasyāṁ samabhavad dakṣaḥ prācetasaḥ kila yasya prajā-visargeṇa lokā āpūritās trayaḥ
From all of them together, in that maiden's womb, was born Daksha, called Prachetasa, by whose generation of offspring the three worlds became filled.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.6.4.18)
yathā sasarja bhūtāni dakṣo duhitṛ-vatsalaḥ retasā manasā caiva tan mamāvahitaḥ śṛṇu
Hear attentively from me how Daksha, so deeply affectionate toward his daughters, brought forth living beings both through his own seed and through his mind.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.6.4.19)
manasaivāsṛjat pūrvaṁ prajāpatir imāḥ prajāḥ devāsura-manuṣyādīn nabhaḥ-sthala-jalaukasaḥ
Prajapati first created these beings — gods, demons, humans and others, dwellers of sky, land and water alike — through his mind alone.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.6.4.20)
tam abṛṁhitam ālokya prajā-sargaṁ prajāpatiḥ vindhya-pādān upavrajya so ’carad duṣkaraṁ tapaḥ
Seeing that this creation of beings was not sufficiently increasing, Prajapati went to the foothills of the Vindhya mountains and undertook the most difficult austerities.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.6.4.21)
tatrāghamarṣaṇaṁ nāma tīrthaṁ pāpa-haraṁ param upaspṛśyānusavanaṁ tapasātoṣayad dharim
There, at the supremely sin-destroying holy place named Aghamarshana, performing his ritual ablutions again and again, he pleased Lord Hari through his austerities.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.6.4.22)
astauṣīd dhaṁsa-guhyena bhagavantam adhokṣajam tubhyaṁ tad abhidhāsyāmi kasyātuṣyad yathā hariḥ
He praised the transcendent Lord, beyond the senses, with the confidential hymn known as the Hamsa-guhya — I shall now recite it to you, and tell you how Hari came to be pleased with him.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.6.4.23)
śrī-prajāpatir uvāca namaḥ parāyāvitathānubhūtaye guṇa-trayābhāsa-nimitta-bandhave adṛṣṭa-dhāmne guṇa-tattva-buddhibhir nivṛtta-mānāya dadhe svayambhuve
Obeisance to that Supreme Truth, whose self-revealed realization never proves false, who is the very cause and kinsman behind the mere semblance of the three material modes, whose abode remains unseen, and who stands wholly beyond the estimation of those whose intellect mistakes the gunas for ultimate reality — to that self-existent one I offer my obeisance.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.6.4.24)
na yasya sakhyaṁ puruṣo ’vaiti sakhyuḥ sakhā vasan saṁvasataḥ pure ’smin guṇo yathā guṇino vyakta-dṛṣṭes tasmai maheśāya namaskaromi
To Him whose companionship the living being fails to recognize, even though he dwells with Him as a friend within this very body, just as a sense-object never perceives the perceiver whose sight reveals it — to that great Lord I offer my obeisance.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.6.4.25)
deho ’savo ’kṣā manavo bhūta-mātrām ātmānam anyaṁ ca viduḥ paraṁ yat sarvaṁ pumān veda guṇāṁś ca taj-jño na veda sarva-jñam anantam īḍe
The body, the vital airs, the senses, the mind and the subtle elements know neither themselves, nor one another, nor anything beyond; yet the soul, knowing them all along with their qualities, still cannot know that omniscient, infinite one — to Him I offer this praise.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.6.4.26)
yadoparāmo manaso nāma-rūpa- rūpasya dṛṣṭa-smṛti-sampramoṣāt ya īyate kevalayā sva-saṁsthayā haṁsāya tasmai śuci-sadmane namaḥ
When the mind's activity of fashioning names and forms comes to rest, through the dissolving of ordinary perception and memory, He alone is perceived in His own true form — to that pure Swan, whose dwelling place is purity itself, I offer my obeisance.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.6.4.27)
manīṣiṇo ’ntar-hṛdi sanniveśitaṁ sva-śaktibhir navabhiś ca trivṛdbhiḥ vahniṁ yathā dāruṇi pāñcadaśyaṁ manīṣayā niṣkarṣanti gūḍham
Just as the learned, through the fifteen sacred kindling-hymns, draw forth the fire hidden within wood, so the wise, through discerning intelligence, extract that hidden Supersoul, seated within the heart, veiled by His own nine potencies and by the three material modes.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.6.4.28)
sa vai mamāśeṣa-viśeṣa-māyā- niṣedha-nirvāṇa-sukhānubhūtiḥ sa sarva-nāmā sa ca viśva-rūpaḥ prasīdatām aniruktātma-śaktiḥ
He alone is, for me, the direct experience of that supreme bliss which arises when every distinction of maya is negated; He alone bears every name, and He alone is the form of the universe — may that Lord of inexpressible spiritual potency be pleased with me.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.6.4.29)
yad yan niruktaṁ vacasā nirūpitaṁ dhiyākṣabhir vā manasota yasya mā bhūt svarūpaṁ guṇa-rūpaṁ hi tat tat sa vai guṇāpāya-visarga-lakṣaṇaḥ
Whatever is expressed in words, or grasped by intellect, senses or mind — none of that is His true nature, for all such things are themselves made of the gunas; He alone bears the mark of both the dissolution and the manifestation of the gunas.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.6.4.30)
yasmin yato yena ca yasya yasmai yad yo yathā kurute kāryate ca parāvareṣāṁ paramaṁ prāk prasiddhaṁ tad brahma tad dhetur ananyad ekam
In whom, from whom, by whom, of whom, for whom — whatever is done or caused to be done, by anyone, in any way — He alone stands supreme among all things high and low, known even before creation itself; that is Brahman, the cause of all causes, the one without a second.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.6.4.31)
yac-chaktayo vadatāṁ vādināṁ vai vivāda-saṁvāda-bhuvo bhavanti kurvanti caiṣāṁ muhur ātma-mohaṁ tasmai namo ’nanta-guṇāya bhūmne
By whose potencies the debaters, each propounding his own doctrine, come to both dispute and agreement among themselves, and who thereby again and again casts them into bewilderment about the true self — to Him, of infinite attributes and all-pervading, I offer my obeisance.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.6.4.32)
astīti nāstīti ca vastu-niṣṭhayor eka-sthayor bhinna-viruddha-dharmaṇoḥ avekṣitaṁ kiñcana yoga-sāṅkhyayoḥ samaṁ paraṁ hy anukūlaṁ bṛhat tat
The assertion 'He is' and the denial 'He is not' — though grounded in one and the same reality, appear as differing, opposing views; yet both yoga and Sankhya point toward some one thing they have each glimpsed — that same, equal, supreme and ultimately harmonious vast reality is He.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.6.4.33)
yo ’nugrahārthaṁ bhajatāṁ pāda-mūlam anāma-rūpo bhagavān anantaḥ nāmāni rūpāṇi ca janma-karmabhir bheje sa mahyaṁ paramaḥ prasīdatu
He who, though Himself nameless and formless, the infinite Lord, out of sheer grace toward those who worship His feet, takes on names, forms, births and deeds — may that Supreme Being be pleased with me.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.6.4.34)
yaḥ prākṛtair jñāna-pathair janānāṁ yathāśayaṁ deha-gato vibhāti yathānilaḥ pārthivam āśrito guṇaṁ sa īśvaro me kurutāṁ manoratham
He who, dwelling within the body, manifests Himself to people through the lesser paths of worship, each according to his own inclination — just as air, though itself without scent, takes on the earthy fragrance it carries — may that Lord fulfill the desire of my heart.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.6.4.35)
śrī-śuka uvāca iti stutaḥ saṁstuvataḥ sa tasminn aghamarṣaṇe prādurāsīt kuru-śreṣṭha bhagavān bhakta-vatsalaḥ
Shri Shuka said: O best of the Kurus, thus praised, the Supreme Lord, ever affectionate to His devotees, appeared right there at that holy place of Aghamarshana.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.6.4.36)
kṛta-pādaḥ suparṇāṁse pralambāṣṭa-mahā-bhujaḥ cakra-śaṅkhāsi-carmeṣu- dhanuḥ-pāśa-gadā-dharaḥ
His feet rested upon the shoulders of Garuda; He had eight long and mighty arms, in which He held a discus, conch, sword, shield, arrow, bow, rope and mace.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.6.4.37)
pīta-vāsā ghana-śyāmaḥ prasanna-vadanekṣaṇaḥ vana-mālā-nivītāṅgo lasac-chrīvatsa-kaustubhaḥ
He wore garments of yellow silk, His complexion was a deep, cloud-like blue-black, His face and eyes radiated a cheerful glow, His whole body was garlanded with forest flowers, and the mark of Shrivatsa and the Kaustubha jewel gleamed upon His chest.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.6.4.38)
mahā-kirīṭa-kaṭakaḥ sphuran-makara-kuṇḍalaḥ kāñcy-aṅgulīya-valaya- nūpurāṅgada-bhūṣitaḥ
A great circular crown adorned His head, gleaming shark-shaped earrings hung from His ears, and He was further adorned with a waist-belt, finger rings, bracelets, anklets and armlets.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.6.4.39)
trailokya-mohanaṁ rūpaṁ bibhrat tribhuvaneśvaraḥ vṛto nārada-nandādyaiḥ pārṣadaiḥ sura-yūthapaiḥ stūyamāno ’nugāyadbhiḥ siddha-gandharva-cāraṇaiḥ
Bearing that form which enchants all three worlds, the Lord of the three worlds stood there, surrounded by His eternal associates like Narada and Nanda and by the chiefs of the demigods, while Siddhas, Gandharvas and Charanas sang His praises all around Him.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.6.4.40)
rūpaṁ tan mahad-āścaryaṁ vicakṣyāgata-sādhvasaḥ nanāma daṇḍavad bhūmau prahṛṣṭātmā prajāpatiḥ
Beholding that great and wondrous form, Prajapati Daksha, at first overtaken by awe, then filled with immense joy, fell flat upon the ground like a rod to offer his obeisance.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.6.4.41)
na kiñcanodīrayitum aśakat tīvrayā mudā āpūrita-manodvārair hradinya iva nirjharaiḥ
Overwhelmed by such intense joy, his senses filled to overflowing just as rivers are filled by mountain torrents, he found himself unable to utter a single word.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.6.4.42)
taṁ tathāvanataṁ bhaktaṁ prajā-kāmaṁ prajāpatim citta-jñaḥ sarva-bhūtānām idam āha janārdanaḥ
The Lord Janardana, who knows the heart of every living being, then spoke these words to that devoted Prajapati, bowed so low before Him, longing as he was for progeny.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.6.4.43)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca prācetasa mahā-bhāga saṁsiddhas tapasā bhavān yac chraddhayā mat-parayā mayi bhāvaṁ paraṁ gataḥ
The Supreme Lord said: O son of the Pracetas, O most fortunate one, you have attained perfection through your austerities, for through faith centered wholly on Me, you have reached the supreme state of loving devotion to Me.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.6.4.44)
prīto ’haṁ te prajā-nātha yat te ’syodbṛṁhaṇaṁ tapaḥ mamaiṣa kāmo bhūtānāṁ yad bhūyāsur vibhūtayaḥ
O lord of subjects, I am pleased with you, for this austerity of yours is meant for the increase and flourishing of this world. This too is My own desire — that all beings should prosper and grow.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.6.4.45)
brahmā bhavo bhavantaś ca manavo vibudheśvarāḥ vibhūtayo mama hy etā bhūtānāṁ bhūti-hetavaḥ
Brahma, Shiva, you and the other prajapatis, the Manus, and the lords of the demigods — all of these are My own manifestations of power, and the very causes of the well-being of all living beings.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.6.4.46)
tapo me hṛdayaṁ brahmaṁs tanur vidyā kriyākṛtiḥ aṅgāni kratavo jātā dharma ātmāsavaḥ surāḥ
O brahmana, austerity is My heart, sacred knowledge is My body, and righteous action is My very form; the sacrifices are My limbs, dharma is My soul, and the celestial gods are My life-breath.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.6.4.47)
aham evāsam evāgre nānyat kiñcāntaraṁ bahiḥ saṁjñāna-mātram avyaktaṁ prasuptam iva viśvataḥ
Before creation, I alone existed; there was nothing else at all, within or without. Consciousness then remained only unmanifest, as though asleep everywhere.
Verse 48 (bhagavata.6.4.48)
mayy ananta-guṇe ’nante guṇato guṇa-vigrahaḥ yadāsīt tata evādyaḥ svayambhūḥ samabhūd ajaḥ
When, within Me — infinite and possessed of infinite qualities — this world composed of the gunas arose out of My own potency, from that very arising was born the first being, the unborn, self-manifest Brahma.
Verse 49 (bhagavata.6.4.49)
sa vai yadā mahādevo mama vīryopabṛṁhitaḥ mene khilam ivātmānam udyataḥ svarga-karmaṇi
