Skandha 6 · Chapter 8
The Narayana-kavacha Shield
Verse 1 (bhagavata.6.8.1)
śrī-rājovāca yayā guptaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ savāhān ripu-sainikān krīḍann iva vinirjitya tri-lokyā bubhuje śriyam
The king said: Please describe to me that armor, protected by which the thousand-eyed Indra conquered his enemy soldiers together with their mounts as easily as if in play, and thereafter enjoyed the wealth of all three worlds —
Verse 2 (bhagavata.6.8.2)
bhagavaṁs tan mamākhyāhi varma nārāyaṇātmakam yathātatāyinaḥ śatrūn yena gupto ’jayan mṛdhe
— that armor, O lord, whose very self is Narayana, by wearing which Indra, though his enemies had already taken up arms against him, conquered them in battle.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.6.8.3)
śrī-bādarāyaṇir uvāca vṛtaḥ purohitas tvāṣṭro mahendrāyānupṛcchate nārāyaṇākhyaṁ varmāha tad ihaika-manāḥ śṛṇu
Sri Badarayani said: When Mahendra asked this question of Vishvarupa, son of Tvashta, who had been chosen as his priest, Vishvarupa spoke of the armor called Narayana-kavacha; hear it now, O King, with an attentive mind.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.6.8.4)
śrī-viśvarūpa uvāca dhautāṅghri-pāṇir ācamya sapavitra udaṅ-mukhaḥ kṛta-svāṅga-kara-nyāso mantrābhyāṁ vāg-yataḥ śuciḥ
Sri Vishvarupa said: Having washed the hands and feet, sipped water for purification, and facing north while wearing a ring of kusha grass, one should, remaining silent and pure, perform the placement of the mantras upon the limbs and hands.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.6.8.5)
nārāyaṇa-paraṁ varma sannahyed bhaya āgate pādayor jānunor ūrvor udare hṛdy athorasi
When danger has come, one should bind on this supreme armor of Narayana — upon the feet, the knees, the thighs, the abdomen, the heart, and then the chest,
Verse 6 (bhagavata.6.8.6)
mukhe śirasy ānupūrvyād oṁkārādīni vinyaset oṁ namo nārāyaṇāyeti viparyayam athāpi vā
and upon the mouth and the head in due order, placing the syllables beginning with Om — that is, the mantra "Om namo narayanaya" — or, alternatively, in reverse order.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.6.8.7)
kara-nyāsaṁ tataḥ kuryād dvādaśākṣara-vidyayā praṇavādi-ya-kārāntam aṅguly-aṅguṣṭha-parvasu
Then one should perform the placement upon the hands using the mantra of twelve syllables, from the pranava (Om) up to the syllable "ya," upon the joints of the fingers and thumbs.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.6.8.8)
nyased dhṛdaya oṁkāraṁ vi-kāram anu mūrdhani ṣa-kāraṁ tu bhruvor madhye ṇa-kāraṁ śikhayā nyaset
One should place the syllable Om upon the heart, the syllable "vi" upon the crown of the head, the syllable "sha" between the eyebrows, and the syllable "na" upon the topknot of hair.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.6.8.9)
ve-kāraṁ netrayor yuñjyān na-kāraṁ sarva-sandhiṣu ma-kāram astram uddiśya mantra-mūrtir bhaved budhaḥ
One should join the syllable "ve" to the eyes, and the syllable "na" to all the joints of the body, and, directing the syllable "ma" as a weapon — thus the wise practitioner becomes the very embodiment of the mantra.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.6.8.10)
savisargaṁ phaḍ-antaṁ tat sarva-dikṣu vinirdiśet oṁ viṣṇave nama iti
That six-syllabled mantra "Om vishnave namah," together with the visarga and ending in the syllable "phat," should then be directed toward all directions.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.6.8.11)
ātmānaṁ paramaṁ dhyāyed dhyeyaṁ ṣaṭ-śaktibhir yutam vidyā-tejas-tapo-mūrtim imaṁ mantram udāharet
One should then meditate upon the Supreme Self, worthy of meditation, endowed with the six opulences, whose very form is knowledge, splendor, and austerity, and recite the following prayer —
Verse 12 (bhagavata.6.8.12)
om harir vidadhyān mama sarva-rakṣāṁ nyastāṅghri-padmaḥ patagendra-pṛṣṭhe darāri-carmāsi-gadeṣu-cāpa- pāśān dadhāno ’ṣṭa-guṇo ’ṣṭa-bāhuḥ
Om. May Hari, His lotus feet set upon the back of Garuda, king of birds, holding in His eight arms the conch, disc, shield, sword, mace, arrows, bow, and noose, He who is endowed with the eight mystic perfections, grant me complete protection.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.6.8.13)
jaleṣu māṁ rakṣatu matsya-mūrtir yādo-gaṇebhyo varuṇasya pāśāt sthaleṣu māyāvaṭu-vāmano vyāt trivikramaḥ khe vatu viśvarūpaḥ
In the waters may He, in His form as the Fish, protect me from the creatures of the deep and from Varuna's noose; on land may the illusion-wielding dwarf Vamana protect me; and in the sky may Vishvarupa, who as Trivikrama measured the worlds, protect me.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.6.8.14)
durgeṣv aṭavy-āji-mukhādiṣu prabhuḥ pāyān nṛsiṁho ’sura-yūthapāriḥ vimuñcato yasya mahāṭṭa-hāsaṁ diśo vinedur nyapataṁś ca garbhāḥ
In dangerous places such as forests and battlefields, may the mighty Narasimha, enemy of the demon hosts, protect me — He whose tremendous laughter, once released, made every direction resound and caused wombs to miscarry.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.6.8.15)
rakṣatv asau mādhvani yajña-kalpaḥ sva-daṁṣṭrayonnīta-dharo varāhaḥ rāmo ’dri-kūṭeṣv atha vipravāse salakṣmaṇo ’vyād bharatāgrajo ’smān
May that Varaha, embodiment of sacrifice, who raised the earth upon His own tusk, protect me on the road; may Parashurama protect me on mountain peaks; and while in a foreign land, may Rama, elder brother of Bharata, protect us together with Lakshmana.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.6.8.16)
mām ugra-dharmād akhilāt pramādān nārāyaṇaḥ pātu naraś ca hāsāt dattas tv ayogād atha yoga-nāthaḥ pāyād guṇeśaḥ kapilaḥ karma-bandhāt
May Narayana protect me from all cruel duties and from carelessness, and may Nara protect me from vain pride; may Dattatreya, lord of yoga, protect me from failure in yoga; and may Kapila, lord of the gunas, protect me from bondage to fruitive action.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.6.8.17)
sanat-kumāro ’vatu kāmadevād dhayaśīrṣā māṁ pathi deva-helanāt devarṣi-varyaḥ puruṣārcanāntarāt kūrmo harir māṁ nirayād aśeṣāt
May Sanat-kumara protect me from lust; may Hayagriva protect me on the road from disrespect toward the gods; may the great sage Narada protect me from faults in the worship of the Deity; and may Hari as the Tortoise protect me from every kind of hell.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.6.8.18)
dhanvantarir bhagavān pātv apathyād dvandvād bhayād ṛṣabho nirjitātmā yajñaś ca lokād avatāj janāntād balo gaṇāt krodha-vaśād ahīndraḥ
May the illustrious Dhanvantari protect me from harmful food; may the self-mastered Rishabha protect me from fear born of the dualities of heat and cold; may Yajna protect me from the censure of the people; and may Balarama, lord of serpents, protect me from wrathful hosts.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.6.8.19)
dvaipāyano bhagavān aprabodhād buddhas tu pāṣaṇḍa-gaṇa-pramādāt kalkiḥ kaleḥ kāla-malāt prapātu dharmāvanāyoru-kṛtāvatāraḥ
May the illustrious Dvaipayana (Vyasa) protect me from ignorance; may Buddha protect me from the heedlessness of atheistic company; and may Kalki, whose great incarnation is undertaken for the protection of dharma, protect me from the taint of this age of Kali.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.6.8.20)
māṁ keśavo gadayā prātar avyād govinda āsaṅgavam ātta-veṇuḥ nārāyaṇaḥ prāhṇa udātta-śaktir madhyan-dine viṣṇur arīndra-pāṇiḥ
May Keshava with His mace protect me at dawn; may Govinda, flute in hand, protect me in the mid-morning; may Narayana of exalted power protect me in the forenoon; and may Vishnu, disc in hand against His foes, protect me at midday.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.6.8.21)
devo ’parāhṇe madhu-hogradhanvā sāyaṁ tri-dhāmāvatu mādhavo mām doṣe hṛṣīkeśa utārdha-rātre niśītha eko ’vatu padmanābhaḥ
May the fierce-bowed slayer of Madhu protect me in the afternoon; may Madhava, present in the three worlds, protect me in the evening; may Hrishikesha protect me at nightfall and at midnight; and in the dead of night may Padmanabha alone protect me.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.6.8.22)
śrīvatsa-dhāmāpara-rātra īśaḥ pratyūṣa īśo ’si-dharo janārdanaḥ dāmodaro ’vyād anusandhyaṁ prabhāte viśveśvaro bhagavān kāla-mūrtiḥ
May the Lord who bears Shrivatsa on His chest protect me in the latter part of the night; may sword-bearing Janardana protect me at the approach of dawn; may Damodara protect me at the junction of night and day; and may Vishveshvara, the Lord whose very form is time, protect me at daybreak.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.6.8.23)
cakraṁ yugāntānala-tigma-nemi bhramat samantād bhagavat-prayuktam dandagdhi dandagdhy ari-sainyam āśu kakṣaṁ yathā vāta-sakho hutāśaḥ
O disc, whose rim burns sharp as the fire that ends the ages, sent forth by the Lord to wheel on every side — burn, burn at once the armies of my enemies, as fire aided by the wind burns dry grass.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.6.8.24)
gade ’śani-sparśana-visphuliṅge niṣpiṇḍhi niṣpiṇḍhy ajita-priyāsi kuṣmāṇḍa-vaināyaka-yakṣa-rakṣo- bhūta-grahāṁś cūrṇaya cūrṇayārīn
O mace, whose touch sparks like the thunderbolt, dear indeed to the Unconquered Lord — crush, crush! Pulverize, pulverize the Kushmandas, Vinayakas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, Bhutas, and evil planetary spirits who are my enemies.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.6.8.25)
tvaṁ yātudhāna-pramatha-preta-mātṛ- piśāca-vipragraha-ghora-dṛṣṭīn darendra vidrāvaya kṛṣṇa-pūrito bhīma-svano ’rer hṛdayāni kampayan
O best of conches, filled ever with Krishna's own breath — with your terrible sound, drive away the fearsome-eyed Yatudhanas, Pramathas, Pretas, Matris, Pishachas, and brahma-rakshasas, and make the hearts of my enemies tremble.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.6.8.26)
tvaṁ tigma-dhārāsi-varāri-sainyam īśa-prayukto mama chindhi chindhi cakṣūṁṣi carmañ chata-candra chādaya dviṣām aghonāṁ hara pāpa-cakṣuṣām
O finest of swords with a keen edge, sent forth by the Lord — cut down, cut down the armies of my foes. O shield marked with a hundred moons, cover the sinful eyes of my malicious enemies, take away their evil gaze.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.6.8.27)
yan no bhayaṁ grahebhyo ’bhūt ketubhyo nṛbhya eva ca sarīsṛpebhyo daṁṣṭribhyo bhūtebhyo ’ṁhobhya eva ca
Whatever fear we may have of malevolent planets, of comets, of hostile men, of serpents, of fanged beasts, of evil spirits, or indeed of our own past sins —
Verse 28 (bhagavata.6.8.28)
sarvāṇy etāni bhagavan- nāma-rūpānukīrtanāt prayāntu saṅkṣayaṁ sadyo ye naḥ śreyaḥ-pratīpakāḥ
— may all these obstacles, whatever stands opposed to our welfare, be instantly and utterly destroyed through the constant chanting of the Lord's holy names and forms.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.6.8.29)
garuḍo bhagavān stotra- stobhaś chandomayaḥ prabhuḥ rakṣatv aśeṣa-kṛcchrebhyo viṣvaksenaḥ sva-nāmabhiḥ
May the illustrious Garuda, whose very being is composed of sacred hymns and their meters, protect us from every calamity; and may Vishvaksena protect us through the power of his own holy names.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.6.8.30)
sarvāpadbhyo harer nāma- rūpa-yānāyudhāni naḥ buddhīndriya-manaḥ-prāṇān pāntu pārṣada-bhūṣaṇāḥ
May the holy names, forms, carriers, and weapons of Hari — all the ornaments of His personal attendants — protect our intelligence, senses, mind, and life-breath from every kind of danger.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.6.8.31)
yathā hi bhagavān eva vastutaḥ sad asac ca yat satyenānena naḥ sarve yāntu nāśam upadravāḥ
Just as the Supreme Lord Himself is, in truth, both the manifest and the unmanifest — by the power of this very truth may all our afflictions be destroyed.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.6.8.32)
yathaikātmyānubhāvānāṁ vikalpa-rahitaḥ svayam bhūṣaṇāyudha-liṅgākhyā dhatte śaktīḥ sva-māyayā
Just as He who is Himself without distinction, whose very nature is oneness, assumes through His own divine power the various energies known by the names of ornament, weapon, and form —
Verse 33 (bhagavata.6.8.33)
tenaiva satya-mānena sarva-jño bhagavān hariḥ pātu sarvaiḥ svarūpair naḥ sadā sarvatra sarva-gaḥ
— by that same truth, may the all-knowing, all-pervading Lord Hari, present everywhere, protect us always and everywhere through all of His own forms.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.6.8.34)
vidikṣu dikṣūrdhvam adhaḥ samantād antar bahir bhagavān nārasiṁhaḥ prahāpayaḻ loka-bhayaṁ svanena sva-tejasā grasta-samasta-tejāḥ
In every direction and corner, above and below, within and without, may the Lord Narasimha, whose own splendor has swallowed up all other splendor, protect us — dispelling the fear of the world with His roar.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.6.8.35)
maghavann idam ākhyātaṁ varma nārāyaṇātmakam vijeṣyase ’ñjasā yena daṁśito ’sura-yūthapān
O Maghavan, this armor whose very self is Narayana has now been described to you; wearing it, you shall with ease conquer the leaders of the demon hosts.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.6.8.36)
etad dhārayamāṇas tu yaṁ yaṁ paśyati cakṣuṣā padā vā saṁspṛśet sadyaḥ sādhvasāt sa vimucyate
Whoever wears this armor — whomever he looks upon with his eyes, or touches with his foot — that person is instantly freed from all fear.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.6.8.37)
na kutaścid bhayaṁ tasya vidyāṁ dhārayato bhavet rāja-dasyu-grahādibhyo vyādhy-ādibhyaś ca karhicit
One who holds this sacred knowledge never has fear from any source whatsoever — neither from kings, from thieves, from malevolent planets, nor at any time from disease and the like.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.6.8.38)
imāṁ vidyāṁ purā kaścit kauśiko dhārayan dvijaḥ yoga-dhāraṇayā svāṅgaṁ jahau sa maru-dhanvani
Long ago, a certain brahmana of the Kaushika lineage, holding this sacred knowledge, gave up his own body through the power of yoga in a desert wilderness.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.6.8.39)
tasyopari vimānena gandharva-patir ekadā yayau citrarathaḥ strībhir vṛto yatra dvija-kṣayaḥ
One day, over the very spot where that brahmana's body lay, Chitraratha, king of the Gandharvas, surrounded by women, happened to pass by in his aerial chariot.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.6.8.40)
gaganān nyapatat sadyaḥ savimāno hy avāk-śirāḥ sa vālikhilya-vacanād asthīny ādāya vismitaḥ prāsya prācī-sarasvatyāṁ snātvā dhāma svam anvagāt
At once he fell headlong from the sky, chariot and all; astonished, he then, on the instruction of the Valikhilya sages, gathered up the brahmana's bones, cast them into the eastward-flowing Sarasvati, bathed there, and only then returned to his own abode.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.6.8.41)
śrī-śuka uvāca ya idaṁ śṛṇuyāt kāle yo dhārayati cādṛtaḥ taṁ namasyanti bhūtāni mucyate sarvato bhayāt
Sri Shuka said: Whoever hears this armor at the proper time, or holds it with reverence, is honored by all beings and freed from every kind of fear.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.6.8.42)
etāṁ vidyām adhigato viśvarūpāc chatakratuḥ trailokya-lakṣmīṁ bubhuje vinirjitya mṛdhe ’surān
Having received this sacred knowledge from Vishvarupa, Indra of the hundred sacrifices conquered the demons in battle and thereafter enjoyed the prosperity of the three worlds.
