Skandha 7 · Chapter 8
Lord Narasimha Slays the King of the Demons
Verse 1 (bhagavata.7.8.1)
śrī-nārada uvāca atha daitya-sutāḥ sarve śrutvā tad-anuvarṇitam jagṛhur niravadyatvān naiva gurv-anuśikṣitam
Narada said: Then, having heard what Prahlada had thus described, all the sons of the demons accepted it because of its very faultlessness — not the teaching given by their tutor.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.7.8.2)
athācārya-sutas teṣāṁ buddhim ekānta-saṁsthitām ālakṣya bhītas tvarito rājña āvedayad yathā
Then the son of the family priest, seeing that the boys' minds had become fixed exclusively on this devotion, grew afraid and hastened to report the matter to the king exactly as it stood.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.7.8.3)
kopāveśa-calad-gātraḥ putraṁ hantuṁ mano dadhe kṣiptvā paruṣayā vācā prahrādam atad-arhaṇam āhekṣamāṇaḥ pāpena tiraścīnena cakṣuṣā
His limbs trembling with the surge of anger, Hiranyakashipu resolved in his mind to kill his own son; hurling harsh words at Prahlada, undeserved as they were, and glaring with a wicked, sidelong glance, he spoke.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.7.8.4)
praśrayāvanataṁ dāntaṁ baddhāñjalim avasthitam sarpaḥ padāhata iva śvasan prakṛti-dāruṇaḥ
Prahlada stood there humbly bowed, self-controlled, his hands folded — while Hiranyakashipu, cruel by nature, hissed like a snake trodden underfoot.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.7.8.5)
śrī-hiraṇyakaśipur uvāca he durvinīta mandātman kula-bheda-karādhama stabdhaṁ mac-chāsanodvṛttaṁ neṣye tvādya yama-kṣayam
Hiranyakashipu said: O ill-mannered, dull-witted one, vilest destroyer of the family — obstinate one who has defied my rule — today I shall send you to the abode of Yama.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.7.8.6)
kruddhasya yasya kampante trayo lokāḥ saheśvarāḥ tasya me ’bhītavan mūḍha śāsanaṁ kiṁ balo ’tyagāḥ
O fool, when I am angered the three worlds tremble along with their very rulers — by whose strength have you, so fearless, dared to overstep my command?
Verse 7 (bhagavata.7.8.7)
śrī-prahrāda uvāca na kevalaṁ me bhavataś ca rājan sa vai balaṁ balināṁ cāpareṣām pare ’vare ’mī sthira-jaṅgamā ye brahmādayo yena vaśaṁ praṇītāḥ
Prahlada said: O King, that strength is not mine alone, nor yours — it is the very strength of all the powerful, and of everyone else besides. All beings, moving and unmoving, high and low, even Brahma himself, are brought under the control of that one strength.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.7.8.8)
sa īśvaraḥ kāla urukramo ’sāv ojaḥ sahaḥ sattva-balendriyātmā sa eva viśvaṁ paramaḥ sva-śaktibhiḥ sṛjaty avaty atti guṇa-trayeśaḥ
He is the Supreme Controller, time itself, the one of vast, unfathomable strides; He is vigor, endurance, and the very self of being, of strength, and of the senses. He alone, the Supreme, master of the three modes, creates, sustains and devours this universe by His own powers.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.7.8.9)
jahy āsuraṁ bhāvam imaṁ tvam ātmanaḥ samaṁ mano dhatsva na santi vidviṣaḥ ṛte ’jitād ātmana utpathe sthitāt tad dhi hy anantasya mahat samarhaṇam
Please give up this demoniac nature of yours, and hold your mind equal toward all — there is no enemy anywhere except one's own uncontrolled mind gone astray. That very equanimity is itself the great worship offered to the Infinite Lord.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.7.8.10)
dasyūn purā ṣaṇ na vijitya lumpato manyanta eke sva-jitā diśo daśa jitātmano jñasya samasya dehināṁ sādhoḥ sva-moha-prabhavāḥ kutaḥ pare
In ancient times some, without ever conquering those six thieves that plunder the self, yet plundering others, imagined they had conquered all ten directions. But for one who has mastered his own mind, who is wise, equal-eyed toward all beings and virtuous, where do "enemies" even come from — are they not born of one's own delusion alone?
Verse 11 (bhagavata.7.8.11)
śrī-hiraṇyakaśipur uvāca vyaktaṁ tvaṁ martu-kāmo ’si yo ’timātraṁ vikatthase mumūrṣūṇāṁ hi mandātman nanu syur viklavā giraḥ
Hiranyakashipu said: It is plain that you wish to die, boasting as excessively as you do. O dull-witted one — is it not true that the speech of those about to die grows incoherent, just like this?
Verse 12 (bhagavata.7.8.12)
O unfortunate one, that lord of the universe, other than me, of whom you speak — where is he? If he is truly everywhere, why then is he not seen in this pillar?
Verse 13 (bhagavata.7.8.13)
so ’haṁ vikatthamānasya śiraḥ kāyād dharāmi te gopāyeta haris tvādya yas te śaraṇam īpsitam
Since you boast so much, I shall now sever your head from this body of yours. Let that Hari you so long for as your refuge protect you today, if he can!
Verse 14 (bhagavata.7.8.14)
evaṁ duruktair muhur ardayan ruṣā sutaṁ mahā-bhāgavataṁ mahāsuraḥ khaḍgaṁ pragṛhyotpatito varāsanāt stambhaṁ tatāḍātibalaḥ sva-muṣṭinā
Thus, in his fury, tormenting his own greatly devoted son again and again with harsh words, the great demon seized his sword, leaped up from his royal throne, and with tremendous force struck the pillar with his own fist.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.7.8.15)
tadaiva tasmin ninado ’tibhīṣaṇo babhūva yenāṇḍa-kaṭāham asphuṭat yaṁ vai sva-dhiṣṇyopagataṁ tv ajādayaḥ śrutvā sva-dhāmātyayam aṅga menire
At that very instant a most terrifying sound arose from within the pillar, so that the shell of the universe itself seemed to crack; hearing it reach even their own abodes, Brahma and the other demigods thought their own realms were being destroyed.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.7.8.16)
sa vikraman putra-vadhepsur ojasā niśamya nirhrādam apūrvam adbhutam antaḥ-sabhāyāṁ na dadarśa tat-padaṁ vitatrasur yena surāri-yūtha-pāḥ
Advancing with force, eager to kill his own son, Hiranyakashipu heard that unprecedented and wondrous roar; yet within the assembly hall he could not find its source — that very sound by which even the demon chiefs, the enemies of the gods, were struck with terror.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.7.8.17)
satyaṁ vidhātuṁ nija-bhṛtya-bhāṣitaṁ vyāptiṁ ca bhūteṣv akhileṣu cātmanaḥ adṛśyatātyadbhuta-rūpam udvahan stambhe sabhāyāṁ na mṛgaṁ na mānuṣam
To prove true the words spoken by His own servant, and to demonstrate His own presence within every being, He appeared there in the assembly, from within that very pillar, bearing a most wondrous form — neither beast nor man.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.7.8.18)
sa sattvam enaṁ parito vipaśyan stambhasya madhyād anunirjihānam nāyaṁ mṛgo nāpi naro vicitram aho kim etan nṛ-mṛgendra-rūpam
Looking all around at that being emerging from the very middle of the pillar, Hiranyakashipu wondered: "This is neither beast nor man — how strange! What is this form, half man and half lion?"
Verse 19 (bhagavata.7.8.19)
mīmāṁsamānasya samutthito 'grato nṛsiṁha-rūpas tad alaṁ bhayānakam
As he was still pondering this very thought, that intensely fearsome Nrisimha form rose up directly before him.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.7.8.20)
pratapta-cāmīkara-caṇḍa-locanaṁ sphurat saṭā-keśara-jṛmbhitānanam karāla-daṁṣṭraṁ karavāla-cañcala- kṣurānta-jihvaṁ bhrukuṭī-mukholbaṇam
Its eyes blazed like molten gold; its face, framed by a shimmering, restless mane, seemed to swell outward; its teeth were terrible, its tongue flickered like the edge of a sword, and its knitted brows made the whole face more dreadful still.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.7.8.21)
stabdhordhva-karṇaṁ giri-kandarādbhuta- vyāttāsya-nāsaṁ hanu-bheda-bhīṣaṇam divi-spṛśat kāyam adīrgha-pīvara- grīvoru-vakṣaḥ-sthalam alpa-madhyamam
Its ears stood erect and rigid; its gaping mouth and nostrils were as wondrous as a mountain cave; its parted jaws were terrifying. Its body touched the sky; its neck was short and thick, its chest broad, its waist slender.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.7.8.22)
candrāṁśu-gauraiś churitaṁ tanūruhair viṣvag bhujānīka-śataṁ nakhāyudham durāsadaṁ sarva-nijetarāyudha- praveka-vidrāvita-daitya-dānavam
Its body-hair was pale as moonbeams; its hundred arms, like ranks of soldiers, spread out in every direction, armed with claws; unapproachable, it scattered the daityas and danavas with the foremost of every weapon, its own and others' alike.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.7.8.23)
prāyeṇa me ’yaṁ hariṇorumāyinā vadhaḥ smṛto ’nena samudyatena kim evaṁ bruvaṁs tv abhyapatad gadāyudho nadan nṛsiṁhaṁ prati daitya-kuñjaraḥ
"This is surely a scheme for my death, devised by Hari of vast illusory power — but what will this effort of his accomplish?" So saying, that elephant among demons, roaring, charged at Nrisimha, club raised high.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.7.8.24)
alakṣito ’gnau patitaḥ pataṅgamo yathā nṛsiṁhaujasi so ’suras tadā na tad vicitraṁ khalu sattva-dhāmani sva-tejasā yo nu purāpibat tamaḥ
Just as a moth vanishes the moment it falls into fire, so that demon then disappeared within the effulgence of Nrisimha — nor is this any wonder, for He is the very abode of pure goodness, He who long ago swallowed up darkness itself with His own radiance.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.7.8.25)
tato ’bhipadyābhyahanan mahāsuro ruṣā nṛsiṁhaṁ gadayoruvegayā taṁ vikramantaṁ sagadaṁ gadādharo mahoragaṁ tārkṣya-suto yathāgrahīt
Then the great demon, drawing near in fury, began striking at Nrisimha with his club at tremendous speed; but the wielder of the mace seized him, club and all, exactly as Garuda, son of Tarkshya, would seize a great serpent.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.7.8.26)
sa tasya hastotkalitas tadāsuro vikrīḍato yadvad ahir garutmataḥ asādhv amanyanta hṛtaukaso ’marā ghana-cchadā bhārata sarva-dhiṣṇya-pāḥ
O descendant of Bharata, when the demon slipped from His hand — just as a serpent sometimes slips free from Garuda at play — the demigods, who had lost their abodes and lay hidden behind the clouds on every side, thought this no good sign at all.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.7.8.27)
taṁ manyamāno nija-vīrya-śaṅkitaṁ yad dhasta-mukto nṛhariṁ mahāsuraḥ punas tam āsajjata khaḍga-carmaṇī pragṛhya vegena gata-śramo mṛdhe
Imagining, because he had slipped free from His hand, that Nrihari now feared his own prowess, the great demon, his battle-weariness spent, again seized his sword and shield and charged at Him with great speed.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.7.8.28)
taṁ śyena-vegaṁ śata-candra-vartmabhiś carantam acchidram upary-adho hariḥ kṛtvāṭṭa-hāsaṁ kharam utsvanolbaṇaṁ nimīlitākṣaṁ jagṛhe mahā-javaḥ
Moving with the speed of a hawk, wheeling his shield marked with a hundred moons above and below without leaving any gap, that demon was seized — his eyes closed — by Hari of tremendous speed, who first let out a harsh and thunderous burst of laughter.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.7.8.29)
viṣvak sphurantaṁ grahaṇāturaṁ harir vyālo yathākhuṁ kuliśākṣata-tvacam dvāry ūrum āpatya dadāra līlayā nakhair yathāhiṁ garuḍo mahā-viṣam
As a snake seizes a mouse, so Hari seized that demon — writhing on every side, distressed at being caught, his skin unpierced even by Indra's own thunderbolt. Falling upon him at the doorway and setting him upon His thighs, the Lord tore him apart with His nails as effortlessly as Garuda tears apart a mighty venomous serpent.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.7.8.30)
saṁrambha-duṣprekṣya-karāla-locano vyāttānanāntaṁ vilihan sva-jihvayā asṛg-lavāktāruṇa-keśarānano yathāntra-mālī dvipa-hatyayā hariḥ
His eyes fierce and terrible, unbearable to look upon in His fury, licking the corners of His own gaping mouth with His tongue, His mane and face reddened and flecked with drops of blood, garlanded with the demon's own entrails, Hari appeared like a lion just returned from killing an elephant.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.7.8.31)
nakhāṅkurotpāṭita-hṛt-saroruhaṁ visṛjya tasyānucarān udāyudhān ahan samastān nakha-śastra-pāṇibhir dordaṇḍa-yūtho ’nupathān sahasraśaḥ
Having torn out the lotus of the demon's heart with the tips of His nails and cast the body aside, the Lord, His countless mighty arms His army, went on to slay by the thousand every armed follower of the demon who stood in His path, using His nails alone as weapons.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.7.8.32)
saṭāvadhūtā jaladāḥ parāpatan grahāś ca tad-dṛṣṭi-vimuṣṭa-rociṣaḥ ambhodhayaḥ śvāsa-hatā vicukṣubhur nirhrāda-bhītā digibhā vicukruśuḥ
Clouds, shaken by His mane, scattered and fled; the planets lost their brilliance, stolen away by His gaze; the oceans, struck by His breath, were thrown into turmoil; and the elephants that guard the directions cried out in terror at His roar.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.7.8.33)
dyaus tat-saṭotkṣipta-vimāna-saṅkulā protsarpata kṣmā ca padābhipīḍitā śailāḥ samutpetur amuṣya raṁhasā tat-tejasā khaṁ kakubho na rejire
The sky filled with airplanes hurled up by His mane; the earth, pressed beneath His feet, seemed to slip from its place; the mountains sprang up from the force of His stride; and the sky and all directions lost their natural luster before His effulgence.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.7.8.34)
tataḥ sabhāyām upaviṣṭam uttame nṛpāsane sambhṛta-tejasaṁ vibhum alakṣita-dvairatham atyamarṣaṇaṁ pracaṇḍa-vaktraṁ na babhāja kaścana
Then that all-powerful Lord, effulgence still gathered about Him, sat down upon the finest royal throne in the assembly hall — yet finding no rival, He remained fiercely angry, His countenance terrible, so that no one there dared come near Him.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.7.8.35)
niśāmya loka-traya-mastaka-jvaraṁ tam ādi-daityaṁ hariṇā hataṁ mṛdhe praharṣa-vegotkalitānanā muhuḥ prasūna-varṣair vavṛṣuḥ sura-striyaḥ
Seeing that primordial demon — who had lain like a burning fever in the head of all three worlds — slain in battle by Hari, the wives of the demigods, their faces blossoming again and again with the rush of their joy, rained down flowers upon Him.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.7.8.36)
tadā vimānāvalibhir nabhastalaṁ didṛkṣatāṁ saṅkulam āsa nākinām surānakā dundubhayo ’tha jaghnire gandharva-mukhyā nanṛtur jaguḥ striyaḥ
Then the sky grew crowded with row upon row of the demigods' airplanes, for all of them longed to see the scene; the demigods' drums and kettledrums rang out, the chief Gandharvas danced, and the celestial women sang.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.7.8.37)
tatropavrajya vibudhā brahmendra-giriśādayaḥ ṛṣayaḥ pitaraḥ siddhā vidyādhara-mahoragāḥ
Then the demigods, headed by Brahma, Indra and Shiva, drew near — together with the great sages, the Pitris, the Siddhas, the Vidyadharas and the great serpents.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.7.8.38)
manavaḥ prajānāṁ patayo gandharvāpsara-cāraṇāḥ yakṣāḥ kimpuruṣās tāta vetālāḥ saha-kinnarāḥ
The Manus, the lords of created beings, the Gandharvas, Apsaras and Charanas, the Yakshas and Kimpurushas, O dear one, and the Vetalas together with the Kinnaras —
Verse 39 (bhagavata.7.8.39)
te viṣṇu-pārṣadāḥ sarve sunanda-kumudādayaḥ mūrdhni baddhāñjali-puṭā āsīnaṁ tīvra-tejasam īḍire nara-śārdulaṁ nātidūracarāḥ pṛthak
— together with all of Vishnu's own attendants, headed by Sunanda and Kumuda, stood not far off, and each of them, hands joined and raised to the head, offered praise to that supremely radiant tiger among men.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.7.8.40)
śrī-brahmovāca nato ’smy anantāya duranta-śaktaye vicitra-vīryāya pavitra-karmaṇe viśvasya sarga-sthiti-saṁyamān guṇaiḥ sva-līlayā sandadhate ’vyayātmane
Brahma said: I bow to the Infinite One, of unfathomable power, of wondrous strength, whose every deed is ever pure — who, through the modes of nature and by His own mere play, brings about the creation, maintenance and dissolution of the universe, while His own self remains forever unchanging.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.7.8.41)
śrī-rudra uvāca kopa-kālo yugāntas te hato ’yam asuro ’lpakaḥ tat-sutaṁ pāhy upasṛtaṁ bhaktaṁ te bhakta-vatsala
Rudra said: The true time for Your wrath is the end of an age; this demon You have just slain is a trifling thing beside it. Now, O Lord so tender toward Your devotees, protect his son, who has come to You as Your own surrendered devotee.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.7.8.42)

Indra said: O Supreme Lord, protecting us, You have won back our own shares of sacrifice; the lotus of our hearts, Your own dwelling place, so long overrun by the demon, has awakened once more. O Lord, how small a thing is even time's grasp for those who serve You — O Narasimha, for them not even liberation is greatly prized, what then of anything less!

The sages said: It was You who once taught us that austerity is our supreme spiritual power, that very power by which You, O Original Person, brought forth this creation lying dormant within Yourself. That austerity, disrupted today by this demon, You have now, O protector of those who seek shelter, sanctioned once more by taking up this protecting form.

The Prajapatis said: O Supreme Lord, we, the lords of creation, were brought forth by You alone, yet he even forbade us to bring forth new progeny. Now he lies here, his chest torn open by You — to this incarnation, taken in pure goodness for the welfare of the whole universe, our obeisance.
Verse 50 (bhagavata.7.8.50)

The Gandharvas said: O Almighty, we are Your own dancers, players and singers, whom he had brought under his sway by the force of his strength and valor. You have now reduced him to this state — how, indeed, could one who had strayed so far from the true path ever come to good?

The Yakshas said: O knower of the twenty-five principles, we are foremost among Your servants for the pleasing service we render You, yet that son of Diti forced us to carry his own palanquin. Vishnu's own attendants said: O giver of shelter, today we have beheld this wondrous form of Yours, part lion and part man, given for the well-being of all the worlds. O Lord, this was in truth Your own servant, cursed by brahmanas — his death here we understand to be nothing but Your own grace upon him.
