Description of Future Manus
Verse 1 (bhagavata.8.13.1)
श्रीशुक उवाच मनुर्विवस्वतः पुत्रः श्राद्धदेव इति श्रुतः । सप्तमो वर्तमानो यस्तदपत्यानि मे शृणु ॥ 13.1 ॥
śrī-śuka uvāca manur vivasvataḥ putraḥ śrāddhadeva iti śrutaḥ saptamo vartamāno yas tad-apatyāni me śṛṇu
Sri Sukadeva said: The son of Vivasvan, known as Shraddhadeva, is the seventh Manu, presiding at present. Now hear from me of his offspring.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.8.13.2)
इक्ष्वाकुर्नभगश्चैव धृष्टः शर्यातिरेव च । नरिष्यन्तोऽथ नाभागः सप्तमो दिष्ट उच्यते ॥ 13.2 ॥
ikṣvākur nabhagaś caiva dhṛṣṭaḥ śaryātir eva ca nariṣyanto ’tha nābhāgaḥ saptamo diṣṭa ucyate
Ikshvaku, Nabhaga, Dhrishta, Sharyati, Narishyanta and Nabhaga — and the seventh son is called Dishta.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.8.13.3)
तरूषश्च पृषध्रश्च दशमो वसुमान्स्मृतः । मनोर्वैवस्वतस्यैते दशपुत्राः परन्तप ॥ 13.3 ॥
tarūṣaś ca pṛṣadhraś ca daśamo vasumān smṛtaḥ manor vaivasvatasyaite daśa-putrāḥ parantapa
O subduer of enemies, Tarusha and Prishadhra, and the tenth, known as Vasuman — these are the ten sons of Vaivasvata Manu.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.8.13.4)
आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा विश्वेदेवा मरुद्गणाः । अश्विनावृभवो राजन्निन्द्रस्तेषां पुरन्दरः ॥ 13.4 ॥
ādityā vasavo rudrā viśvedevā marud-gaṇāḥ aśvināv ṛbhavo rājann indras teṣāṁ purandaraḥ
O King, in this age the demigods are the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Vishvedevas, the hosts of Maruts, the two Ashvins and the Ribhus, and their Indra is Purandara.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.8.13.5)
कश्यपोऽत्रिर्वसिष्ठश्च विश्वामित्रोऽथ गौतमः । जमदग्निर्भरद्वाज इति सप्तर्षयः स्मृताः ॥ 13.5 ॥
kaśyapo ’trir vasiṣṭhaś ca viśvāmitro ’tha gautamaḥ jamadagnir bharadvāja iti saptarṣayaḥ smṛtāḥ
Kashyapa, Atri, Vasishtha, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Bharadvaja — these are known as the seven sages.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.8.13.6)
अत्रापि भगवज्जन्म कश्यपाददितेरभूत् । आदित्यानामवरजो विष्णुर्वामनरूपधृक् ॥ 13.6 ॥
atrāpi bhagavaj-janma kaśyapād aditer abhūt ādityānām avarajo viṣṇur vāmana-rūpa-dhṛk
In this age too, the Lord took birth from Kashyapa and Aditi as Vishnu in the form of Vamana, the youngest of the Adityas.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.8.13.7)
सङ्क्षेपतो मयोक्तानि सप्तमन्वन्तराणि ते । भविष्याण्यथ वक्ष्यामि विष्णोः शक्त्यान्वितानि च ॥ 13.7 ॥
saṅkṣepato mayoktāni sapta-manvantarāṇi te bhaviṣyāṇy atha vakṣyāmi viṣṇoḥ śaktyānvitāni ca
I have thus briefly told you of the seven past Manvantaras. Now I shall describe those still to come, together with the incarnations empowered by Vishnu within them.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.8.13.8)
विवस्वतश्च द्वे जाये विश्वकर्मसुते उभे । संज्ञा छाया च राजेन्द्र ये प्रागभिहिते तव ॥ 13.8 ॥
vivasvataś ca dve jāye viśvakarma-sute ubhe saṁjñā chāyā ca rājendra ye prāg abhihite tava
O foremost of kings, Vivasvan's two wives — Sanjna and Chhaya, the two daughters of Vishvakarma — I have already described to you earlier.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.8.13.9)
तृतीयां वडवामेके तासां संज्ञासुतास्त्रयः । यमो यमी श्राद्धदेवश्छायायाश्च सुताञ्छृणु ॥ 13.9 ॥
tṛtīyāṁ vaḍavām eke tāsāṁ saṁjñā-sutās trayaḥ yamo yamī śrāddhadevaś chāyāyāś ca sutāñ chṛṇu
Some say he had a third wife too, Vadava. Sanjna had three children — Yama, Yami and Shraddhadeva. Now hear of Chhaya's children.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.8.13.10)
सावर्णिस्तपती कन्या भार्या संवरणस्य या । शनैश्चरस्तृतीयोऽभूदश्विनौ वडवात्मजौ ॥ 13.10 ॥
sāvarṇis tapatī kanyā bhāryā saṁvaraṇasya yā śanaiścaras tṛtīyo ’bhūd aśvinau vaḍavātmajau
From Chhaya came the son Savarni and the daughter Tapati, who later became the wife of King Samvarana; her third child was Shanaishchara. From Vadava were born the two Ashvini brothers.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.8.13.11)
अष्टमेऽन्तर आयाते सावर्णिर्भविता मनुः । निर्मोकविरजस्काद्याः सावर्णितनया नृप ॥ 13.11 ॥
aṣṭame ’ntara āyāte sāvarṇir bhavitā manuḥ nirmoka-virajaskādyāḥ sāvarṇi-tanayā nṛpa
O King, when the eighth age comes, Savarni will be its Manu; Nirmoka and Virajaska will be among his sons.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.8.13.12)
तत्र देवाः सुतपसो विरजा अमृतप्रभाः । तेषां विरोचनसुतो बलिरिन्द्रो भविष्यति ॥ 13.12 ॥
tatra devāḥ sutapaso virajā amṛtaprabhāḥ teṣāṁ virocana-suto balir indro bhaviṣyati
In that age the demigods will be the Sutapas, Virajas and Amritaprabhas, and their Indra will be Bali, the son of Virochana.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.8.13.13)
दत्त्वेमां याचमानाय विष्णवे यः पदत्रयम् । राद्धमिन्द्रपदं हित्वा ततः सिद्धिमवाप्स्यति ॥ 13.13 ॥
dattvemāṁ yācamānāya viṣṇave yaḥ pada-trayam rāddham indra-padaṁ hitvā tataḥ siddhim avāpsyati
He who, when Vishnu came begging, gave three paces of land and thereby let go even the position of Indra he had won — that same Bali will then attain perfection.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.8.13.14)
योऽसौ भगवता बद्धः प्रीतेन सुतले पुनः । निवेशितोऽधिके स्वर्गादधुनास्ते स्वराडिव ॥ 13.14 ॥
yo ’sau bhagavatā baddhaḥ prītena sutale punaḥ niveśito ’dhike svargād adhunāste sva-rāḍ iva
That same Bali, whom the Lord, out of affection, once bound and then established in Sutala — a realm surpassing even heaven — now dwells there as though he were a sovereign king himself.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.8.13.15)
गालवो दीप्तिमान्रामो द्रोणपुत्रः कृपस्तथा । ऋष्यशृङ्गः पितास्माकं भगवान्बादरायणः ॥ 13.15 ॥
gālavo dīptimān rāmo droṇa-putraḥ kṛpas tathā ṛṣyaśṛṅgaḥ pitāsmākaṁ bhagavān bādarāyaṇaḥ
Galava, Diptiman, Rama (Parashurama), Drona's son Ashvatthama, Kripa, Rishyashringa, and our own father, the Lord Badarayana (Vyasa),
Verse 16 (bhagavata.8.13.16)
इमे सप्तर्षयस्तत्र भविष्यन्ति स्वयोगतः । इदानीमासते राजन् स्वे स्व आश्रममण्डले ॥ 13.16 ॥
ime saptarṣayas tatra bhaviṣyanti sva-yogataḥ idānīm āsate rājan sve sva āśrama-maṇḍale
— these, by their own yogic power, will become the seven sages in that future age. O King, for now they all still dwell each in his own hermitage.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.8.13.17)
देवगुह्यात्सरस्वत्यां सार्वभौम इति प्रभुः । स्थानं पुरन्दराद्धृत्वा बलये दास्यतीश्वरः ॥ 13.17 ॥
devaguhyāt sarasvatyāṁ sārvabhauma iti prabhuḥ sthānaṁ purandarād dhṛtvā balaye dāsyatīśvaraḥ
In that age, from Devaguhya and Sarasvati will be born the mighty Lord known as Sarvabhauma, who will take the position of Indra from Purandara and bestow it upon Bali.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.8.13.18)
नवमो दक्षसावर्णिर्मनुर्वरुणसम्भवः । भूतकेतुर्दीप्तकेतुरित्याद्यास्तत्सुता नृप ॥ 13.18 ॥
navamo dakṣa-sāvarṇir manur varuṇa-sambhavaḥ bhūtaketur dīptaketur ity ādyās tat-sutā nṛpa
O King, the ninth Manu, born of Varuna, will be Daksha-savarni, and among his sons will be Bhutaketu, Diptaketu and others.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.8.13.19)
पारामरीचिगर्भाद्या देवा इन्द्रोऽद्भुतः स्मृतः । द्युतिमत्प्रमुखास्तत्र भविष्यन्त्यृषयस्ततः ॥ 13.19 ॥
pārā-marīcigarbhādyā devā indro ’dbhutaḥ smṛtaḥ dyutimat-pramukhās tatra bhaviṣyanty ṛṣayas tataḥ
The Paras and Marichigarbhas and others will be the demigods of that age, their Indra will be named Adbhuta, and the seven sages will be led by Dyutiman.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.8.13.20)
आयुष्मतोऽम्बुधारायामृषभो भगवत्कला । भविता येन संराद्धां त्रिलोकीं भोक्ष्यतेऽद्भुतः ॥ 13.20 ॥
āyuṣmato ’mbudhārāyām ṛṣabho bhagavat-kalā bhavitā yena saṁrāddhāṁ tri-lokīṁ bhokṣyate ’dbhutaḥ
From Ayushman and Ambudhara will be born Rishabha, a partial manifestation of the Lord, by whose aid Indra Adbhuta will come to enjoy the well-ordered wealth of the three worlds.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.8.13.21)
दशमो ब्रह्मसावर्णिरुपश्लोकसुतो मनुः । तत्सुता भूरिषेणाद्या हविष्मत्प्रमुखा द्विजाः ॥ 13.21 ॥
daśamo brahma-sāvarṇir upaśloka-suto manuḥ tat-sutā bhūriṣeṇādyā haviṣmat pramukhā dvijāḥ
The tenth Manu will be Brahma-savarni, son of Upashloka; among his sons will be Bhurishena, and the seven sages will be the brahmanas headed by Havishman.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.8.13.22)
हविष्मान्सुकृतः सत्यो जयो मूर्तिस्तदा द्विजाः । सुवासनविरुद्धाद्या देवाः शम्भुः सुरेश्वरः ॥ 13.22 ॥
haviṣmān sukṛtaḥ satyo jayo mūrtis tadā dvijāḥ suvāsana-viruddhādyā devāḥ śambhuḥ sureśvaraḥ
Havishman, Sukrita, Satya, Jaya and Murti will be the brahmana-sages of that time; the Suvasanas and Viruddhas will be the demigods, and Shambhu will be their lord, Indra.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.8.13.23)
विष्वक्सेनो विषूच्यां तु शम्भोः सख्यं करिष्यति । जातः स्वांशेन भगवान्गृहे विश्वसृजो विभुः ॥ 13.23 ॥
viṣvakseno viṣūcyāṁ tu śambhoḥ sakhyaṁ kariṣyati jātaḥ svāṁśena bhagavān gṛhe viśvasṛjo vibhuḥ
Born through his own partial expansion from Vishuchi in the house of Vishvasrashta, the mighty Lord Vishvaksena will form a friendship with Shambhu.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.8.13.24)
मनुर्वै धर्मसावर्णिरेकादशम आत्मवान् । अनागतास्तत्सुताश्च सत्यधर्मादयो दश ॥ 13.24 ॥
manur vai dharma-sāvarṇir ekādaśama ātmavān anāgatās tat-sutāś ca satyadharmādayo daśa
The eleventh Manu will be the self-realized Dharma-savarni; his ten sons, yet unborn, will be headed by Satyadharma.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.8.13.25)
विहङ्गमाः कामगमा निर्वाणरुचयः सुराः । इन्द्रश्च वैधृतस्तेषामृषयश्चारुणादयः ॥ 13.25 ॥
vihaṅgamāḥ kāmagamā nirvāṇarucayaḥ surāḥ indraś ca vaidhṛtas teṣām ṛṣayaś cāruṇādayaḥ
The Vihangamas, Kamagamas and Nirvanaruchis will be the demigods of that age, their Indra will be Vaidhrita, and the seven sages will be led by Aruna.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.8.13.26)
आर्यकस्य सुतस्तत्र धर्मसेतुरिति स्मृतः । वैधृतायां हरेरंशस्त्रिलोकीं धारयिष्यति ॥ 13.26 ॥
āryakasya sutas tatra dharmasetur iti smṛtaḥ vaidhṛtāyāṁ harer aṁśas tri-lokīṁ dhārayiṣyati
In that age, the son of Aryaka, known as Dharmasetu, will be born from Vaidhrita as a portion of the Lord, and will sustain the three worlds.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.8.13.27)
भविता रुद्रसावर्णी राजन्द्वादशमो मनुः । देववानुपदेवश्च देवश्रेष्ठादयः सुताः ॥ 13.27 ॥
bhavitā rudra-sāvarṇī rājan dvādaśamo manuḥ devavān upadevaś ca devaśreṣṭhādayaḥ sutāḥ
O King, the twelfth Manu will be Rudra-savarni; Devavan, Upadeva and Devashreshtha will be among his sons.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.8.13.28)
ऋतधामा च तत्रेन्द्रो देवाश्च हरितादयः । ऋषयश्च तपोमूर्तिस्तपस्व्याग्नीध्रकादयः ॥ 13.28 ॥
ṛtadhāmā ca tatrendro devāś ca haritādayaḥ ṛṣayaś ca tapomūrtis tapasvy āgnīdhrakādayaḥ
In that age, Indra will be Ritadhama, the demigods will be led by the Haritas, and the sages will be Tapomurti, Tapasvi, Agnidhraka and others.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.8.13.29)
स्वधामाख्यो हरेरंशः साधयिष्यति तन्मनोः । अन्तरं सत्यसहसः सुनृतायाः सुतो विभुः ॥ 13.29 ॥
svadhāmākhyo harer aṁśaḥ sādhayiṣyati tan-manoḥ antaraṁ satyasahasaḥ sunṛtāyāḥ suto vibhuḥ
The son of Satyasaha and Sunrita, that mighty portion of the Lord named Svadhama, will conduct the affairs of that entire age.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.8.13.30)
मनुस्त्रयोदशो भाव्यो देवसावर्णिरात्मवान् । चित्रसेनविचित्राद्या देवसावर्णिदेहजाः ॥ 13.30 ॥
manus trayodaśo bhāvyo deva-sāvarṇir ātmavān citrasena-vicitrādyā deva-sāvarṇi-dehajāḥ
The thirteenth Manu to come will be the self-possessed Deva-savarni; Chitrasena, Vichitra and others will be his own offspring.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.8.13.31)
देवाः सुकर्मसुत्रामसंज्ञा इन्द्रो दिवस्पतिः । निर्मोकतत्त्वदर्शाद्या भविष्यन्त्यृषयस्तदा ॥ 13.31 ॥
devāḥ sukarma-sutrāma- saṁjñā indro divaspatiḥ nirmoka-tattvadarśādyā bhaviṣyanty ṛṣayas tadā
At that time the demigods will be called the Sukarmas and the Sutramas, Divaspati will be Indra, and Nirmoka, Tattvadarsha and others will be the sages.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.8.13.32)
देवहोत्रस्य तनय उपहर्ता दिवस्पतेः । योगेश्वरो हरेरंशो बृहत्यां सम्भविष्यति ॥ 13.32 ॥
devahotrasya tanaya upahartā divaspateḥ yogeśvaro harer aṁśo bṛhatyāṁ sambhaviṣyati
Yogeshvara, a portion of the Lord who will serve the welfare of Divaspati, will be born as the son of Devahotra from the womb of Brihati.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.8.13.33)
मनुर्वा इन्द्रसावर्णिश्चतुर्दशम एष्यति । उरुगम्भीरबुधाद्या इन्द्रसावर्णिवीर्यजाः ॥ 13.33 ॥
manur vā indra-sāvarṇiś caturdaśama eṣyati uru-gambhīra-budhādyā indra-sāvarṇi-vīryajāḥ
Indra-savarni will come as the fourteenth Manu; Uru, Gambhira, Budha and others will be sons born of his own vigor.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.8.13.34)
पवित्राश्चाक्षुषा देवाः शुचिरिन्द्रो भविष्यति । अग्निर्बाहुः शुचिः शुद्धो मागधाद्यास्तपस्विनः ॥ 13.34 ॥
pavitrāś cākṣuṣā devāḥ śucir indro bhaviṣyati agnir bāhuḥ śuciḥ śuddho māgadhādyās tapasvinaḥ
The Pavitras and Chakshushas will be the demigods, Shuchi will be Indra, and Agni, Bahu, Shuchi, Shuddha, Magadha and other great ascetics will be the sages.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.8.13.35)
सत्रायणस्य तनयो बृहद्भानुस्तदा हरिः । वितानायां महाराज क्रियातन्तून्वितायिता ॥ 13.35 ॥
satrāyaṇasya tanayo bṛhadbhānus tadā hariḥ vitānāyāṁ mahārāja kriyā-tantūn vitāyitā
O great King, in that age the Lord Hari, born as the son of Satrayana from Vitana under the name Brihadbhanu, will spread and sustain the web of sacred rites.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.8.13.36)
राजंश्चतुर्दशैतानि त्रिकालानुगतानि ते । प्रोक्तान्येभिर्मितः कल्पो युगसाहस्रपर्ययः ॥ 13.36 ॥
rājaṁś caturdaśaitāni tri-kālānugatāni te proktāny ebhir mitaḥ kalpo yuga-sāhasra-paryayaḥ
O King, thus I have told you of these fourteen Manvantaras spanning past, present and future. Measured by these together, one kalpa equals the passing of a thousand cycles of the four yugas.
