Skandha 1 · Chapter 7

The Awakening of Vishnu

Chapter 6All chaptersChapter 8

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.1.7.1)

sūta uvāca tau vīkṣya balinau brahmā tadopāyānacintayat sāmadānabhidādīṁśca yuddhāntānsarvatantravit

Suta said: Seeing those two powerful ones, Brahma, versed in every strategy, then pondered the means to deal with them — conciliation, gift-giving, sowing division, and the rest, ending in war.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.1.7.2)

na jāne'haṁ balaṁ nūnametayorvā yathātatham ajñāte tu bale kāmaṁ naiva yuddhaṁ praśasyate

'I truly do not know the exact measure of their strength; and when strength is unknown, war at all is indeed not to be recommended.'

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.1.7.3)

stutiṁ karomi cedadya duṣṭayormadamattayoḥ prakāśitaṁ bhavennūnaṁ nirbalatvaṁ mayā svayam

'If I now offer praise to these two wicked ones, maddened with pride, my own weakness will surely be revealed by myself.'

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.1.7.4)

vadhiṣyati tadaiko'pi nirbalatve prakāśite dānaṁ naivādya yogyaṁ vā bhedaḥ kāryo mayā katham

'Then, my weakness once revealed, even one of them alone would kill me. Nor is gift-giving fitting now — and how could I sow division between them?'

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.1.7.5)

viṣṇuṁ prabodhayāmyadya śeṣe suptaṁ janārdanam caturbhujaṁ mahāvīryaṁ duḥkhahā sa bhaviṣyati

'I shall now awaken Vishnu, Janardana, asleep upon Shesha — the four-armed one of great valor; he shall be the destroyer of this sorrow.'

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.1.7.6)

iti sañcintya manasā padmanālagato'bjajaḥ jagāma śaraṇaṁ viṣṇuṁ manasā duḥkhanāśakam

Having thus resolved in his mind, the lotus-born one, seated on the lotus-stalk, went in mind for refuge to Vishnu, the destroyer of sorrow.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.1.7.7)

tuṣṭāva bodhanārthaṁ taṁ śubhaiḥ sambodhanairharim nārāyaṇaṁ jagannāthaṁ nispandaṁ yoganidrayā

For the sake of awakening him, he praised Hari with auspicious epithets — Narayana, lord of the world, motionless under yogic slumber.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.1.7.8)

brahmovāca dīnanātha hare viṣṇo vāmanottiṣṭha mādhava bhaktārtihṛddhṛṣīkeśa sarvāvāsa jagatpate

Brahma said: O lord of the helpless, Hari, Vishnu, Vamana, Madhava, arise! O remover of devotees' distress, lord of the senses, dwelling in all, lord of the world!

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.1.7.9)

antaryāminnameyātmanvāsudeva jagatpate duṣṭārināśanaikāgracitta cakragadādhara

O inner controller, of immeasurable self, Vasudeva, lord of the world; O you whose mind is single-pointedly set on destroying wicked foes, bearer of discus and mace!

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.1.7.10)

sarvajña sarvalokeśa sarvaśaktisamanvita uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha deveśa duḥkhanāśana pāhi mām

O all-knowing one, lord of all worlds, endowed with every power — arise, arise, O lord of gods, destroyer of sorrow, protect me!

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.1.7.11)

viśvambhara viśālākṣa puṇyaśravaṇakīrtana jagadyone nirākāra sargasthityantakāraka

O sustainer of the universe, wide-eyed one, whose hearing and praise are meritorious; O womb of the world, formless one, agent of creation, preservation, and dissolution!

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.1.7.12)

imau daityau mahārāja hantukāmau madoddhatau na jānāsyakhilādhāra kathaṁ māṁ saṅkaṭe gatam

O great king, these two daityas, arrogant with pride, are eager to kill; O support of all, do you not know how I have fallen into danger?

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.1.7.13)

upekṣase'tiduḥkhārtaṁ yadi māṁ śaraṇaṁ gatam pālakatvaṁ mahāviṣṇo nirādhāraṁ bhavettataḥ

If you disregard me, so afflicted with sorrow, though I have come to you for refuge, then your very role as protector, O great Vishnu, would become baseless.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.1.7.14)

evaṁ stuto'pi bhagavān na bubodha yadā hariḥ yoganidrāsamākrāntastadā brahmā hyacintayat

When the Lord Hari, though thus praised, still did not awaken, overcome by yogic slumber, Brahma then indeed thought:

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.1.7.15)

nūnaṁ śaktisamākrānto viṣṇurnidrāvaśaṁ gataḥ jajāgāra na dharmātmā kiṁ karomyadya duḥkhitaḥ

'Surely Vishnu, overcome by her Shakti, has fallen under the sway of sleep; that righteous soul has not awakened — what shall I, so sorrowful, do now?'

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.1.7.16)

hantukāmāvubhau prāptau dānavau madagarvitau kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi nāsti me śaraṇaṁ kvacit

'These two danavas, arrogant with pride, have come, eager to kill; what shall I do, where shall I go? I have no refuge anywhere.'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.1.7.17)

iti sañcintya manasā niścayaṁ pratipadya ca tuṣṭāva yoganidrāṁ tāmekāgrahṛdayasthitaḥ

Having thus reflected in his mind and reached a resolve, he, with heart fixed single-pointedly, praised that Yoganidra.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.1.7.18)

vicārya manasāpyevaṁ śaktirme rakṣaṇe kṣamā yayā hyacetano viṣṇuḥ kṛto'sti spandavarjitaḥ

Having thus considered in his mind: 'That Shakti alone is capable of protecting me, by whom even Vishnu has been made unconscious, devoid of motion —'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.1.7.19)

vyasuryathā na jānāti guṇācchabdādikāniha tathā harirna jānāti nidrāmīlitalocanaḥ

'— just as a lifeless body does not perceive the qualities of sound and the rest here, so Hari too perceives nothing, his eyes closed in sleep.'

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.1.7.20)

na jahāti yato nidrāṁ bahudhā saṁstuto'pyasau manye nāsya vaśe nidrā nidrayāyaṁ vaśīkṛtaḥ

'Since, even praised in many ways, he does not give up his sleep, I think that sleep is not under his control — rather, he is under the control of sleep.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.1.7.21)

yo yasya vaśamāpantaḥ sa tasya kiṅkaraḥ kila tasmācca yoganidreyaṁ svāminī māpaterhareḥ

'He who falls under another's control becomes, indeed, that other's servant; therefore this Yoganidra is the very mistress of Hari, the lord of Lakshmi.'

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.1.7.22)

sindhujāyā api vaśe yayā svāmī vaśīkṛtaḥ nūnaṁ jagadidaṁ sarvaṁ bhagavatyā vaśīkṛtam

'Even the ocean-born is under her control, since her lord has been brought under her sway; surely this entire universe is under the sway of the Bhagavati.'

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.1.7.23)

ahaṁ viṣṇustathā śambhuḥ sāvitrī ca ramāpyumā sarve vayaṁ vaśe yasyā nātra kiñcidvicāraṇā

'I myself, Vishnu, likewise Shambhu, Savitri, Rama, and Uma too — all of us are under her control; there is no question about this at all.'

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.1.7.24)

harirapyavaśaḥ śete yathānyaḥ prākṛto janaḥ yayābhibhūtaḥ kā vārtā kilānyeṣāṁ mahātmanām

'Even Hari lies helpless in sleep, like any other ordinary being; by whom he has been overcome — what then is to be said of other great souls?'

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.1.7.25)

staumyadya yoganidrāṁ vai yayā mukto janārdanaḥ ghaṭayiṣyati yuddhe ca vāsudevaḥ sanātanaḥ

'I shall now praise Yoganidra, so that Janardana, once freed by her, the eternal Vasudeva, may engage in battle.'

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.1.7.26)

iti kṛtvā matiṁ brahmā padmanālasthitastadā tuṣṭāva yoganidrāṁ tāṁ viṣṇoraṅgeṣu saṁsthitām

Having thus resolved, Brahma, standing there on the lotus-stalk, then praised that Yoganidra, abiding within the limbs of Vishnu.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.1.7.27)

brahmovāca devi tvamasya jagataḥ kila kāraṇaṁ hi jñātaṁ mayā sakalavedavacobhiramba yadviṣṇurapyakhilalokavivekakartā nidrāvaśaṁ ca gamitaḥ puruṣottamo'dya

Brahma said: O Devi, that you indeed are the cause of this universe has been understood by me through the words of all the Vedas, O mother; for even Vishnu, the discerner of all worlds, that Supreme Person, has today been brought under the sway of sleep.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.1.7.28)

ko veda te janani mohavilāsalīlāṁ mūḍho'smyahaṁ harirayaṁ vivaśaśca śete īdṛktayā sakalabhūtamanonivāse vidvattamo vibudhakoṭiṣu nirguṇāyāḥ

Who, O mother, can know your playful sport of delusion? I am a fool, and here Hari too lies helpless in sleep; in such a manner, among the crores of the wise, who is the wisest concerning you, beyond the gunas, dwelling in the minds of all beings?

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.1.7.29)

sāṅkhyā vadanti puruṣaṁ prakṛtiṁ ca yāṁ tāṁ caitanyabhāvarahitāṁ jagataśca kartrīm kiṁ tādṛśāsi kathamatra jagannivāsa\- ścaitanyatāvirahito vihitastvayādya

The Sankhyas speak of Purusha, and of that Prakriti devoid of consciousness, yet the maker of the world — are you truly of that kind? How, then, has the dweller of the world here been made devoid of consciousness by you today?

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.1.7.30)

nāṭyaṁ tanoṣi saguṇā vividhaprakāraṁ no vetti ko'pi tava kṛtyavidhānayogam dhyāyanti yāṁ munigaṇā niyataṁ trikālaṁ sandhyeti nāma parikalpya guṇān bhavāni

Endowed with qualities, you extend this drama in manifold ways; no one at all understands the working of your ordained deeds — you whom the hosts of sages meditate upon constantly, at the three daily junctures, having conceived of you, O Bhavani, under the name Sandhya and various attributes.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.1.7.31)

buddhirhi bodhakaraṇā jagatāṁ sadā tvaṁ śrīścāsi devi satataṁ sukhadā surāṇām kīrtistathā matidhṛtī kila kāntireva śraddhā ratiśca sakaleṣu janeṣu mātaḥ

You are ever the intellect that gives understanding to the worlds; you are Shri, O Devi, ever the giver of joy to the gods; you are fame, and likewise resolve and fortitude, indeed beauty; you are faith and affection, O mother, in all beings.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.1.7.32)

nātaḥ paraṁ kila vitarkaśataiḥ pramāṇaṁ prāptaṁ mayā yadiha duḥkhagatiṁ gatena tvaṁ cātra sarvajagatāṁ jananīti satyaṁ nidrālutāṁ vitaratā hariṇātra dṛṣṭam

Beyond this, indeed, no further proof has been attained by me through hundreds of speculations, fallen as I am into this state of sorrow; but this truth — that you are the mother of all worlds — has been shown here by Hari himself, in granting this proof through the state of sleep.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.1.7.33)

tvaṁ devi vedaviduṣāmapi durvibhāvyā vedo'pi nūnamakhilārthatayā na veda yasmāttvadudbhavamasau śrutirāpnuvānā pratyakṣameva sakalaṁ tava kāryametat

You, O Devi, are hard to conceive even by those learned in the Vedas; even the Veda, in truth, does not know you in your entirety, since it too, the Shruti, has its very origin from you — all of this is direct proof of your work.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.1.7.34)

kaste caritramakhilaṁ bhuvi veda dhīmā\- nnāhaṁ harirna ca bhavo na surāstathānye jñātuṁ kṣamāśca munayo na mamātmajāśca durvācya eva mahimā tava sarvaloke

What wise one on this earth knows your entire deed? Not I, nor Hari, nor Bhava, nor the other gods likewise; nor are the sages capable of knowing it, nor my own sons — your glory is indeed indescribable in all the world.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.1.7.35)

In sacrifices, O Devi, if those learned in the Vedas do not utter your name in the oblation-cry Svaha, even though the offering is made, the gods never obtain their share of the sacrifice; you alone, even among the wise, are the giver of livelihood.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.1.7.36)

trātā vayaṁ bhagavati prathamaṁ tvayā vai devārisambhavabhayādadhunā tathaiva bhīto'smi devi varade śaraṇaṁ gato'smi ghoraṁ nirīkṣya madhunā saha kaiṭabhaṁ ca

We were protected by you before, O Bhagavati, from fear arising from the enemies of the gods, and now likewise; I am afraid, O boon-granting Devi, and have come for refuge, having beheld the terrible Madhu together with Kaitabha.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.1.7.37)

no vetti viṣṇuradhunā mama duḥkhameta\- jjāne tvayātmavivaśīkṛtadehayaṣṭiḥ muñcādidevamathavā jahi dānavendrau yadrocate tava kuruṣva mahānubhāve

Vishnu now knows nothing of my sorrow; I know that his body-frame has been made helpless by you yourself. Either release the primal god, or slay the two lords of the danavas — do whatever pleases you, O great one.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.1.7.38)

jānanti ye na tava devi paraṁ prabhāvaṁ dhyāyanti te hariharāvapi mandacittāḥ jñātaṁ mayādya janani prakaṭaṁ pramāṇaṁ yadviṣṇurapyatitarāṁ vivaśo'tha śete

Those who do not know your supreme power, O Devi, and meditate instead upon Hari and Hara alone, are dull of mind; today, O mother, I have understood a clear proof — that even Vishnu lies utterly helpless, asleep.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.1.7.39)

sindhūdbhavāpi na hariṁ pratibodhituṁ vai śaktā patiṁ tava vaśānugamadya śaktyā manye tvayā bhagavati prasabhaṁ ramāpi prasvāpitā na bubudhe vivaśīkṛteva

Even the ocean-born is not able to awaken Hari, her own lord — she too has today come under your sway, by your Shakti; I think, O Bhagavati, that even Rama has been forcibly lulled to sleep by you, and, made helpless, does not awaken.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.1.7.40)

dhanyāsta eva bhuvi bhaktiparāstavāṅghrau tyaktvānyadevabhajanaṁ tvayi līnabhāvāḥ kurvanti devi bhajanaṁ sakalaṁ nikāmaṁ jñātvā samastajananīṁ kila kāmadhenum

Blessed indeed are those on this earth who are devoted to your feet, who, abandoning worship of other gods, merge their being wholly into you; O Devi, they render complete worship at will, knowing you to be the universal mother, the very wish-fulfilling cow.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.1.7.41)

dhīkāntikīrtiśubhavṛttiguṇādayaste viṣṇorguṇāstu parihṛtya gatāḥ kva cādya bandīkṛto harirasau nanu nidrayātra śaktyā tavaiva bhagavatyatimānavatyāḥ

Your qualities — intellect, radiance, fame, virtuous conduct, and the rest — where indeed have Vishnu's own qualities gone today, having left him? Surely Hari has been made a captive here by sleep, by the power of you alone, O Bhagavati, of measure beyond all measure.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.1.7.42)

tvaṁ śaktireva jagatāmakhilaprabhāvā tvannirmitaṁ ca sakalaṁ khalu bhāvamātram tvaṁ krīḍase nijavinirmitamohajāle nāṭye yathā viharate svakṛte naṭo vai

You alone are the Shakti of all worlds, of boundless power; and everything, indeed, is merely a state fashioned by you. You sport within the net of delusion of your own making, just as an actor plays within the drama of his own making.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.1.7.43)

viṣṇustvayā prakaṭitaḥ prathamaṁ yugādau dattā ca śaktiramalā khalu pālanāya trātaṁ ca sarvamakhilaṁ vivaśīkṛto'dya yadrocate tava tathāmba karoṣi nūnam

Vishnu was first manifested by you at the beginning of the age, and a stainless power was indeed given to him for the sake of protection; and all of everything was thereby protected — yet today he is made helpless. Whatever pleases you, O mother, that you surely do.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.1.7.44)

sṛṣṭvātra māṁ bhagavati pravināśituṁ ce\- nnecchāsti te kuru dayāṁ parihṛtya maunam kasmādimau prakaṭitau kila kālarūpau yadvā bhavāni hasituṁ nu kimicchase mām

If, O Bhagavati, having created me here, you wish now to destroy me, so be it — yet, if not, abandon your silence and show compassion; why, indeed, have these two, in the form of time, been manifested? Or, O Bhavani, do you wish merely to laugh at me?

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.1.7.45)

jñātaṁ mayā tava viceṣṭitamadbhutaṁ vai kṛtvākhilaṁ jagadidaṁ ramase svatantrā līnaṁ karoṣi sakalaṁ kila māṁ tathaiva hantuṁ tvamicchasi bhavāni kimatra citram

I have understood your wondrous play indeed — having made this whole universe, you sport freely; you dissolve everything back into yourself — likewise, do you wish to destroy me too, O Bhavani? What wonder is there in this?

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.1.7.46)

kāmaṁ kuruṣva vadhamadya mamaiva māta\- rduḥkhaṁ na me maraṇajaṁ jagadambike'tra kartā tvayaiva vihitaḥ prathamaṁ sa cāyaṁ daityāhato'tha mṛta ityayaśo gariṣṭham

Do, then, as you wish — kill me today, O my mother; I have no sorrow here from dying, O mother of the world. But I, the world's maker, was first appointed by you alone — and if it is said, 'he was slain by a daitya and died,' that would be the greatest disgrace.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.1.7.47)

uttiṣṭha devi kuru rūpamihādbhutaṁ tvaṁ māṁ vā tvimau jahi yathecchasi bālalīle no cetprabodhaya hariṁ nihanedimau ya\- stvatsādhyametadakhilaṁ kila kāryajātam

Arise, O Devi, assume here your wondrous form; slay either me or these two, as you wish, O playful one. Otherwise, awaken Hari, so that he may slay these two — for indeed this entire task can only be accomplished through you.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.1.7.48)

sūta uvāca evaṁ stutā tadā devī tāmasī tatra vedhasā niḥsṛtya haridehāttu saṁsthitā pārśvatastadā

Suta said: Thus praised by the Creator, the tamasic Devi then, departing from Hari's body, stood there at his side.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.1.7.49)

tyaktvāṅgāni ca sarvāṇi viṣṇoratulatejasaḥ nirgatā yoganidrā sā nāśāya ca tayostadā

Having left all the limbs of Vishnu, of matchless splendor, that Yoganidra departed, then, for the destruction of those two demons.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.1.7.50)

vispanditaśarīro'sau yadā jāto janārdanaḥ dhātā paramikāṁ prāpto mudaṁ dṛṣṭvā hariṁ tataḥ

When Janardana's body then began to stir, the Creator, seeing Hari awaken, attained the greatest joy.
