Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.10.12.1)

मुनिरुवाच । महिषीगर्भसम्भूतो महाबलपराक्रमः । देवान्सर्वान्पराजित्य महिषोऽभूज्जगत्प्रभुः ॥

muniruvāca mahiṣīgarbhasambhūto mahābalaparākramaḥ devānsarvānparājitya mahiṣo'bhūjjagatprabhuḥ

The sage said: Born of a she-buffalo's womb, of great strength and prowess, having conquered all the gods, Mahisha became lord of the world.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.10.12.2)

सर्वेषां लोकपालानामधिकारान्महासुरः । बलानिर्जित्य बुभुजे त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्यमद्भुतम् ॥

sarveṣāṁ lokapālānāmadhikārānmahāsuraḥ balānirjitya bubhuje trailokyaiśvaryamadbhutam

Having forcibly conquered the domains of all the guardians of the world, that great asura enjoyed the sovereignty of the three worlds, wondrous indeed.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.10.12.3)

ततः पराजिताः सर्वे देवाः स्वर्गपरिच्युताः । ब्रह्माणं च पुरस्कृत्य ते जग्मुर्लोकमुत्तमम् ॥

tataḥ parājitāḥ sarve devāḥ svargaparicyutāḥ brahmāṇaṁ ca puraskṛtya te jagmurlokamuttamam

Then all the defeated gods, fallen from heaven, placing Brahma before them, went to that supreme realm —

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.10.12.4)

यत्रोत्तमौ देवदेवौ संस्थितौ शङ्कराच्युतौ । वृत्तान्तं कथयामासुर्महिषस्य दुरात्मनः ॥

yatrottamau devadevau saṁsthitau śaṅkarācyutau vṛttāntaṁ kathayāmāsurmahiṣasya durātmanaḥ

— where the two excellent gods of gods, Shankara and Achyuta, resided, and related to them the whole account of the wicked Mahisha.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.10.12.5)

देवानां चैव सर्वेषां स्थानानि तरसासुरः । विनिर्जित्य स्वयं भुङ्क्ते बलवीर्यमदोद्धतः ॥

devānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ sthānāni tarasāsuraḥ vinirjitya svayaṁ bhuṅkte balavīryamadoddhataḥ

Having forcibly conquered the abodes of all the gods, that asura enjoyed them himself, swollen with strength and vigor and pride.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.10.12.6)

महिषासुरनामासौ दुष्टदैत्योऽमरेश्वरौ । वधोपायश्च तस्याशु चिन्त्यतामसुरार्दनौ ॥

mahiṣāsuranāmāsau duṣṭadaityo'mareśvarau vadhopāyaśca tasyāśu cintyatāmasurārdanau

'This wicked daitya named Mahishasura, O lords of the immortals — swiftly let a means for his destruction be considered, O tormentors of the asuras!'

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.10.12.7)

एवं श्रुत्वा स भगवान्देवानामार्तियुग्वचः । चकार कोपं सुबहुं तथा शङ्करपद्मजौ ॥

evaṁ śrutvā sa bhagavāndevānāmārtiyugvacaḥ cakāra kopaṁ subahuṁ tathā śaṅkarapadmajau

Having heard thus the anguished words of the gods, that Lord Shankara, together with the lotus-born one, fell into great wrath.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.10.12.8)

एवं कोपयुतस्यास्य हरेरास्यान्महीपते । तेजः प्रादुरभूद्दिव्यं सहस्रार्कसमद्युति ॥

evaṁ kopayutasyāsya harerāsyānmahīpate tejaḥ prādurabhūddivyaṁ sahasrārkasamadyuti

Thus, O lord of the earth, from the enraged face of Hari, a divine radiance arose, splendid as a thousand suns.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.10.12.9)

अथानुक्रमतस्तेजः सर्वेषां त्रिदिवौकसाम् । शरीरादुद्भवं प्राप हर्षयद्विबुधाधिपान् ॥

athānukramatastejaḥ sarveṣāṁ tridivaukasām śarīrādudbhavaṁ prāpa harṣayadvibudhādhipān

Then, in due order, a radiance, arising from the bodies of all the dwellers of heaven, came forth, delighting the lords of the wise.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.10.12.10)

यदभूच्छम्भुजं तेजो मुखमस्योदपद्यत । केशा बभूवुर्याम्येन वैष्णवेन च बाहवः ॥

yadabhūcchambhujaṁ tejo mukhamasyodapadyata keśā babhūvuryāmyena vaiṣṇavena ca bāhavaḥ

The radiance that came from Shambhu became her face; from Yama's radiance her hair, and from Vishnu's, her arms.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.10.12.11)

सौम्येन च स्तनौ जातौ माहेन्द्रेण च मध्यमः । वारुणेन ततो भूप जङ्घोरू सम्बभूवतुः ॥

saumyena ca stanau jātau māhendreṇa ca madhyamaḥ vāruṇena tato bhūpa jaṅghorū sambabhūvatuḥ

From the gentle Moon her two breasts were formed, and from great Indra her waist. From Varuna, O king, her calves and thighs came into being —

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.10.12.12)

नितम्बौ तेजसा भूमेः पादौ ब्राह्मेण तेजसा । पादाङ्गुल्यो भानवेन वासवेन कराङ्गुली ॥

nitambau tejasā bhūmeḥ pādau brāhmeṇa tejasā pādāṅgulyo bhānavena vāsavena karāṅgulī

— from the earth's radiance, her hips; from Brahma's radiance, her feet; from the Sun's, the toes of her feet; from Vasava's, the fingers of her hands.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.10.12.13)

कौबेरेण तथा नासा दन्ताः सञ्जज्ञिरे तदा । प्राजापत्येनोत्तमेन तेजसा वसुधाधिप ॥

kaubereṇa tathā nāsā dantāḥ sañjajñire tadā prājāpatyenottamena tejasā vasudhādhipa

From Kubera came her nose, and from Prajapati's excellent radiance, O lord of the earth, her teeth were then formed —

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.10.12.14)

पावकेन च सञ्जातं लोचनत्रितयं शुभम् । सान्ध्येन तेजसा जाते भृकुट्यौ तेजसां निधी ॥

pāvakena ca sañjātaṁ locanatritayaṁ śubham sāndhyena tejasā jāte bhṛkuṭyau tejasāṁ nidhī

— and from Fire's radiance, her three auspicious eyes were formed; from Twilight's radiance were formed her eyebrows, those treasuries of radiance.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.10.12.15)

कर्णौ वायव्यतो जातौ तेजसो मनुजाधिप । सर्वेषां तेजसा देवी जाता महिषमर्दिनी ॥

karṇau vāyavyato jātau tejaso manujādhipa sarveṣāṁ tejasā devī jātā mahiṣamardinī

— her two ears were formed from Vayu's radiance, O lord of men. From the radiance of them all, the Goddess, the crusher of Mahisha, was born.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.10.12.16)

शूलं ददौ शिवो विष्णुश्चक्रं शङ्खं च पाशभृत् । हुताशनो ददौ शक्तिं मारुतश्चापसायकौ ॥

śūlaṁ dadau śivo viṣṇuścakraṁ śaṅkhaṁ ca pāśabhṛt hutāśano dadau śaktiṁ mārutaścāpasāyakau

Shiva gave her a trident; Vishnu, a discus; the noose-bearing Varuna, a conch; Fire gave her a spear; Marut gave a bow and arrows.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.10.12.17)

वज्रं महेन्द्रः प्रददौ घण्टां चैरावताद् गजात् । कालदण्डं यमो ब्रह्मा चाक्षमालाकमण्डलू ॥

vajraṁ mahendraḥ pradadau ghaṇṭāṁ cairāvatād gajāt kāladaṇḍaṁ yamo brahmā cākṣamālākamaṇḍalū

Great Indra gave a thunderbolt, and a bell from his elephant Airavata; Yama gave the rod of death; Brahma gave a rosary and a water-pot.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.10.12.18)

दिवाकरो रश्मिमालां रोमकूपेषु सन्ददौ । कालः खड्गं तथा चर्म निर्मलं वसुधाधिप ॥

divākaro raśmimālāṁ romakūpeṣu sandadau kālaḥ khaḍgaṁ tathā carma nirmalaṁ vasudhādhipa

The Sun bestowed his garland of rays into her every pore; Kala gave a sword and a spotless shield, O lord of the earth.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.10.12.19)

समुद्रो निर्मलं हारमजरे चाम्बरे नृप । चूडामणिं कुण्डले च कटकानि तथाङ्गदे ॥

samudro nirmalaṁ hāramajare cāmbare nṛpa cūḍāmaṇiṁ kuṇḍale ca kaṭakāni tathāṅgade

The ocean gave a spotless necklace and an imperishable garment, O king, a crest-jewel, earrings, bracelets, and armlets.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.10.12.20)

अर्धचन्द्रं निर्मलं च नूपुराणि तथा ददौ । ग्रैवेयकं भूषणं च तस्यै देव्यै मुदान्वितः ॥

ardhacandraṁ nirmalaṁ ca nūpurāṇi tathā dadau graiveyakaṁ bhūṣaṇaṁ ca tasyai devyai mudānvitaḥ

He gave a spotless crescent moon and anklets as well, and, filled with joy, a jeweled neck-ornament for that Goddess.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.10.12.21)

विश्वकर्मा चोर्मिकाश्च ददौ तस्यै धरापते । हिमवान्वाहनं सिंहं रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥

viśvakarmā cormikāśca dadau tasyai dharāpate himavānvāhanaṁ siṁhaṁ ratnāni vividhāni ca

Vishvakarma gave her bracelets, O lord of the earth. Himavan gave a lion as her mount, and various gems.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.10.12.22)

पानपात्रं सुरापूर्णं ददौ तस्यै धनाधिपः । शेषश्च भगवान्देवो नागहारं ददौ विभुः ॥

pānapātraṁ surāpūrṇaṁ dadau tasyai dhanādhipaḥ śeṣaśca bhagavāndevo nāgahāraṁ dadau vibhuḥ

The lord of wealth gave a cup filled with wine; and Shesha, the divine lord, that mighty one, gave a serpent-garland.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.10.12.23)

अन्यैरशेषविबुधैर्मानिता सा जगन्मयी । तां तुष्टुवुर्महादेवीं देवा महिषपीडिताः ॥

anyairaśeṣavibudhairmānitā sā jaganmayī tāṁ tuṣṭuvurmahādevīṁ devā mahiṣapīḍitāḥ

By all the other gods without exception was that world-embodying one honored. The gods, oppressed by Mahisha, praised that great Goddess —

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.10.12.24)

नानास्तोत्रैर्महेशानीं जगदुद्भवकारिणीम् । तेषां निशम्य देवेशी स्तोत्रं विबुधपूजिता ॥

nānāstotrairmaheśānīṁ jagadudbhavakāriṇīm teṣāṁ niśamya deveśī stotraṁ vibudhapūjitā

— Maheshani, the cause of the world's origin, with various hymns. Having heard their hymn, that sovereign Goddess, worshipped by the wise —

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.10.12.25)

महिषस्य वधार्थाय महानादं चकार ह । तेन नादेन महिषश्चकितोऽभूद्धरापते ॥

mahiṣasya vadhārthāya mahānādaṁ cakāra ha tena nādena mahiṣaścakito'bhūddharāpate

— let out a great roar for the sake of Mahisha's destruction. By that roar, Mahisha became terrified, O lord of the earth.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.10.12.26)

आससाद जगद्धात्रीं सर्वसैन्यसमावृतः । ततः स युयुधे देव्या महिषाख्यो महासुरः ॥

āsasāda jagaddhātrīṁ sarvasainyasamāvṛtaḥ tataḥ sa yuyudhe devyā mahiṣākhyo mahāsuraḥ

Surrounded by his entire army, he approached the sustainer of the world. Then that great asura called Mahisha fought with the Goddess —

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.10.12.27)

शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधा क्षिप्तैः पूरयन्नम्बरान्तरम् । चिक्षुरो ग्रामणीः सेनापतिर्दुर्धरदुर्मुखौ ॥

śastrāstrairbahudhā kṣiptaiḥ pūrayannambarāntaram cikṣuro grāmaṇīḥ senāpatirdurdharadurmukhau

— hurling many kinds of weapons and missiles, filling the space of the sky. Chikshura, the commander, general, Durdhara and Durmukha —

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.10.12.28)

बाष्कलस्ताम्रकश्चैव बिडालवदनोऽपरः । एतैश्चान्यैरसङ्ख्यातैः सङ्ग्रामान्तकसन्निभैः ॥

bāṣkalastāmrakaścaiva biḍālavadano'paraḥ etaiścānyairasaṅkhyātaiḥ saṅgrāmāntakasannibhaiḥ

— Bashkala, Tamraka, and another named Bidalavadana — with these and other innumerable warriors, resembling the ender of battle —

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.10.12.29)

योधैः परिवृतो वीरो महिषो दानवोत्तमः । ततः सा कोपताम्राक्षी देवी लोकविमोहिनी ॥

yodhaiḥ parivṛto vīro mahiṣo dānavottamaḥ tataḥ sā kopatāmrākṣī devī lokavimohinī

— surrounded by such warriors, the hero Mahisha, foremost of the danavas. Then that Goddess, her eyes red with rage, who bewilders the worlds —

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.10.12.30)

जघान योधान्समरे देवी महिषमाश्रितान् । ततस्तेषु हतेष्वेव स दैत्यो रोषमूर्च्छितः ॥

jaghāna yodhānsamare devī mahiṣamāśritān tatasteṣu hateṣveva sa daityo roṣamūrcchitaḥ

— slew in battle the warriors who had taken refuge with Mahisha. Then, when they were slain, that daitya fell into a swoon of fury.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.10.12.31)

आससाद तदा देवीं तूर्णं मायाविशारदः । रूपान्तराणि सम्भेजे मायया दानवेश्वरः ॥

āsasāda tadā devīṁ tūrṇaṁ māyāviśāradaḥ rūpāntarāṇi sambheje māyayā dānaveśvaraḥ

Then that asura, skilled in maya, quickly approached the Goddess; that lord of the danavas assumed various forms through his illusion.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.10.12.32)

तानि तान्यस्य रूपाणि नाशयामास सा तदा । ततोऽन्ते माहिषं रूपं बिभ्राणममरार्दनम् ॥

tāni tānyasya rūpāṇi nāśayāmāsa sā tadā tato'nte māhiṣaṁ rūpaṁ bibhrāṇamamarārdanam

Each and every one of those forms of his, she then destroyed. Then, at last, when he bore the buffalo form, the tormentor of the immortals —

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.10.12.33)

पाशेन बद्ध्वा सुदृढं छित्त्वा खड्गेन तच्छिरः । पातयामास महिषं देवी देवगणान्तकम् ॥

pāśena baddhvā sudṛḍhaṁ chittvā khaḍgena tacchiraḥ pātayāmāsa mahiṣaṁ devī devagaṇāntakam

— binding him firmly with her noose, and cutting off his head with her sword, the Goddess felled Mahisha, that ender of the hosts of gods.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.10.12.34)

हाहाकृतं ततः शेषं सैन्यं भग्नं दिशो दश । तुष्टुवुर्देवदेवेशीं सर्वे देवाः प्रमोदिताः ॥

hāhākṛtaṁ tataḥ śeṣaṁ sainyaṁ bhagnaṁ diśo daśa tuṣṭuvurdevadeveśīṁ sarve devāḥ pramoditāḥ

Then, the remaining army, crying out in lamentation, was broken and scattered in the ten directions; and all the gods, overjoyed, praised the sovereign Goddess.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.10.12.35)

एवं लक्ष्मीः समुत्पन्ना महिषासुरमर्दिनी । राजञ्छृणु सरस्वत्याः प्रादुर्भावो यथाभवत् ॥

evaṁ lakṣmīḥ samutpannā mahiṣāsuramardinī rājañchṛṇu sarasvatyāḥ prādurbhāvo yathābhavat

Thus Lakshmi arose as the crusher of Mahishasura. O king, hear now how the manifestation of Sarasvati came about.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.10.12.36)

एकदा शुम्भनामासीद्दैत्यो मदबलोत्कटः । निशुम्भश्चापि तद्भ्राता महाबलपराक्रमः ॥

ekadā śumbhanāmāsīddaityo madabalotkaṭaḥ niśumbhaścāpi tadbhrātā mahābalaparākramaḥ

Once there was a daitya named Shumbha, fierce with the intoxication of pride, and his brother Nishumbha too, of great strength and prowess.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.10.12.37)

तेन सम्पीडिता देवाः सर्वे भ्रष्टश्रियो नृप । हिमवन्तमथासाद्य देवीं तुष्टुवुरादरात् ॥

tena sampīḍitā devāḥ sarve bhraṣṭaśriyo nṛpa himavantamathāsādya devīṁ tuṣṭuvurādarāt

By him all the gods were oppressed, O king, fallen from their glory; going then to the Himalaya, they praised the Goddess with reverence.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.10.12.38)

देवा ऊचुः । जय देवेशि भक्तानामार्तिनाशनकोविदे । दानवान्तकरूपे त्वमजरामरणेऽनघे ॥

devā ūcuḥ jaya deveśi bhaktānāmārtināśanakovide dānavāntakarūpe tvamajarāmaraṇe'naghe

The gods said: Victory, O sovereign Goddess, skilled in destroying the suffering of devotees! You who take the form of the ender of danavas, unaging, undying, sinless one!

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.10.12.39)

देवेशि भक्तिसुलभे महाबलपराक्रमे । विष्णुशङ्करब्रह्मादिस्वरूपेऽनन्तविक्रमे ॥

deveśi bhaktisulabhe mahābalaparākrame viṣṇuśaṅkarabrahmādisvarūpe'nantavikrame

O sovereign Goddess, easily attained through devotion, of great strength and prowess! Whose form is Vishnu, Shankara, Brahma, and the rest, of boundless valor!

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.10.12.40)

सृष्टिस्थितिकरे नाशकारिके कान्तिदायिनि । महाताण्डवसुप्रीते मोददायिनि माधवि ॥

sṛṣṭisthitikare nāśakārike kāntidāyini mahātāṇḍavasuprīte modadāyini mādhavi

O bringer of creation and sustenance, and also destruction, giver of radiance! Delighting in the great cosmic dance, giver of joy, O Madhavi!

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.10.12.41)

प्रसीद देवदेवेशि प्रसीद करुणानिधे । निशुम्भशुम्भसम्भूतभयापाराम्बुवारिधे ॥

prasīda devadeveśi prasīda karuṇānidhe niśumbhaśumbhasambhūtabhayāpārāmbuvāridhe

Be gracious, O sovereign of the gods! Be gracious, O treasury of compassion! O ocean whose farther shore is the fear born of Shumbha and Nishumbha —

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.10.12.42)

उद्धरास्मान् प्रपन्नार्तिनाशिके शरणागतान् । एवं संस्तुवतां तेषां त्रिदशानां धरापते ॥

uddharāsmān prapannārtināśike śaraṇāgatān evaṁ saṁstuvatāṁ teṣāṁ tridaśānāṁ dharāpate

'— lift us up, destroyer of the suffering of those who have taken refuge, of us who have come for shelter.' As the thirty gods thus praised her, O lord of the earth —

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.10.12.43)

प्रसन्ना गिरिजा प्राह ब्रूत स्तवनकारणम् । एतस्मिन्नन्तरे यस्याः कोशरूपात्समुत्थिता ॥

prasannā girijā prāha brūta stavanakāraṇam etasminnantare yasyāḥ kośarūpātsamutthitā

— the pleased daughter of the mountain said: 'Tell me the reason for this hymn.' At that moment, from whose sheath-like form arose —

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.10.12.44)

कौशिकी सा जगत्पूज्या देवान्प्रीत्येदमब्रवीत् । प्रसन्नाहं सुरश्रेष्ठाः स्तवेनोत्तमरूपिणी ॥

kauśikī sā jagatpūjyā devānprītyedamabravīt prasannāhaṁ suraśreṣṭhāḥ stavenottamarūpiṇī

— she, Kaushiki, worshipped by the world, spoke thus to the gods with affection: 'I am pleased, O best of gods, by this hymn, I of supreme form —'

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.10.12.45)

व्रियतां वर इत्युक्ते देवाः संवव्रिरे वरम् । शुम्भनामावरो भ्राता निशुम्भस्तस्य विश्रुतः ॥

vriyatāṁ vara ityukte devāḥ saṁvavrire varam śumbhanāmāvaro bhrātā niśumbhastasya viśrutaḥ

'— choose a boon.' When this was said, the gods chose their boon: 'There is a younger brother named Shumbha, and his renowned brother Nishumbha —'

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.10.12.46)

त्रैलोक्यमोजसाक्रान्तं दैत्येन बलशालिना । तद्वधश्चिन्त्यतां देवि दुरात्मा दानवेश्वरः ॥

trailokyamojasākrāntaṁ daityena balaśālinā tadvadhaścintyatāṁ devi durātmā dānaveśvaraḥ

'— the three worlds have been overrun by force by that powerful daitya. Let their destruction be considered, O Goddess — that evil-souled lord of the danavas —'

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.10.12.47)

बाधते सततं देवि तिरस्कृत्य निजौजसा । देव्युवाच । देवशत्रुं पातयिष्ये निशुम्भं शुम्भमेव च ॥

bādhate satataṁ devi tiraskṛtya nijaujasā devyuvāca devaśatruṁ pātayiṣye niśumbhaṁ śumbhameva ca

'— constantly oppresses us, O Goddess, scorning us with his own might.' The Goddess said: 'I shall fell the enemy of the gods, Nishumbha, and Shumbha too —'

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.10.12.48)

स्वस्थास्तिष्ठत भद्रं वः कण्टकं नाशयामि वः । इत्युक्त्वा देवदेवेशी देवान्सेन्द्रान्दयामयी ॥

svasthāstiṣṭhata bhadraṁ vaḥ kaṇṭakaṁ nāśayāmi vaḥ ityuktvā devadeveśī devānsendrāndayāmayī

'— remain at ease, blessings upon you; I shall destroy your thorn.' Having said this, the sovereign Goddess of gods, the compassionate one, before the gods and Indra —

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.10.12.49)

जगामादर्शनं सद्यो मिषतां त्रिदिवौकसाम् । देवाः समागता हृष्टाः सुवर्णाद्रिगुहां शुभाम् ॥

jagāmādarśanaṁ sadyo miṣatāṁ tridivaukasām devāḥ samāgatā hṛṣṭāḥ suvarṇādriguhāṁ śubhām

— vanished from sight at once, even as the dwellers of heaven watched. The gods, delighted, gathered at an auspicious cave of the golden mountain.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.10.12.50)

चण्डमुण्डौ पश्यतःस्म भृत्यौ शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः । दृष्ट्वा तां चारुसर्वाङ्गीं देवीं लोकविमोहिनीम् ॥

caṇḍamuṇḍau paśyataḥsma bhṛtyau śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ dṛṣṭvā tāṁ cārusarvāṅgīṁ devīṁ lokavimohinīm

Chanda and Munda, the two servants of Shumbha and Nishumbha, saw that Goddess of lovely limbs, who bewilders the worlds.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.10.12.51)

कथयामासतू राज्ञे भृत्यौ तौ चण्डमुण्डकौ । देव सर्वासुरश्रेष्ठ रत्नभोगार्ह मानद ॥

kathayāmāsatū rājñe bhṛtyau tau caṇḍamuṇḍakau deva sarvāsuraśreṣṭha ratnabhogārha mānada

The two servants, Chanda and Munda, related this to their king: 'O lord, foremost among all the asuras, worthy of jewels and enjoyment, honorer of others —'

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.10.12.52)

अपूर्वा कामिनी दृष्टा चावाभ्यां रिपुमर्दन । तस्याः सम्भोगयोग्यत्वमस्त्येव तव साम्प्रतम् ॥

apūrvā kāminī dṛṣṭā cāvābhyāṁ ripumardana tasyāḥ sambhogayogyatvamastyeva tava sāmpratam

'— we two have seen a woman of unprecedented beauty, O crusher of enemies. She is indeed now fit to be enjoyed by you —'

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.10.12.53)

तां समानय चार्वङ्गीं भुङ्क्ष्व सौख्यसमन्वितः । तादृशी नासुरी नारी न गन्धर्वी न दानवी ॥

tāṁ samānaya cārvaṅgīṁ bhuṅkṣva saukhyasamanvitaḥ tādṛśī nāsurī nārī na gandharvī na dānavī

'— bring her here, that lovely-limbed one, and enjoy happiness with her. There is no woman among asuras, gandharvas, or danavas —'

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.10.12.54)

न मानवी नापि देवी यादृशी सा मनोहरा । एवं भृत्यवचः श्रुत्वा शुम्भः परबलार्दनः ॥

na mānavī nāpi devī yādṛśī sā manoharā evaṁ bhṛtyavacaḥ śrutvā śumbhaḥ parabalārdanaḥ

'— nor among men nor even gods, is there one so enchanting.' Having heard these servants' words, Shumbha, the crusher of enemy forces —

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.10.12.55)

दूतं सम्मेषयामास सुग्रीवं नाम दानवम् । स दूतस्त्वरितं गत्वा देव्याः सविधमादरात् ॥

dūtaṁ sammeṣayāmāsa sugrīvaṁ nāma dānavam sa dūtastvaritaṁ gatvā devyāḥ savidhamādarāt

— sent forth a messenger, a danava named Sugriva. That messenger, going swiftly to the presence of the Goddess with reverence —

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.10.12.56)

वृत्तान्तं कथयामास देव्यै शुम्भस्य यद्वचः । देवि शुम्भासुरो नाम त्रैलोक्यविजयी प्रभुः ॥

vṛttāntaṁ kathayāmāsa devyai śumbhasya yadvacaḥ devi śumbhāsuro nāma trailokyavijayī prabhuḥ

— related to the Goddess the account, the words spoken by Shumbha: 'O Goddess, there is one named Shumbhasura, the conqueror of the three worlds, the lord —'

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.10.12.57)

सर्वेषां रत्नवस्तूनां भोक्ता मान्यो दिवौकसाम् । तदुक्तं शृणु मे देवि रत्नभोक्ताहमव्ययः ॥

sarveṣāṁ ratnavastūnāṁ bhoktā mānyo divaukasām taduktaṁ śṛṇu me devi ratnabhoktāhamavyayaḥ

'— the enjoyer of all jewels and precious things, honored by the dwellers of heaven. Hear what he has said to me, O Goddess: I am the imperishable enjoyer of jewels —'

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.10.12.58)

त्वं चापि रत्नभूतासि भज मां चारुलोचने । सर्वेषु यानि रत्नानि देवासुरनरेषु च ॥

tvaṁ cāpi ratnabhūtāsi bhaja māṁ cārulocane sarveṣu yāni ratnāni devāsuranareṣu ca

'— and you too are a jewel among beings; devote yourself to me, O lovely-eyed one. Of all the jewels among gods, asuras, and men —'

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.10.12.59)

तानि मय्येव सुभगे भज मां कामजै रसैः । देव्युवाच । सत्यं वदसि हे दूत दैत्यराजप्रियङ्करम् ॥

tāni mayyeva subhage bhaja māṁ kāmajai rasaiḥ devyuvāca satyaṁ vadasi he dūta daityarājapriyaṅkaram

'— all are mine, O fortunate one; devote yourself to me with the pleasures born of desire.' The Goddess said: 'You speak the truth, O messenger, pleasing to the king of daityas —'

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.10.12.60)

प्रतिज्ञा या मया पूर्वं कृता साप्यनृता कथम् । भवेत्तां शृणु मे दूत या प्रतिज्ञा मया कृता ॥

pratijñā yā mayā pūrvaṁ kṛtā sāpyanṛtā katham bhavettāṁ śṛṇu me dūta yā pratijñā mayā kṛtā

'— but there is a vow I made before; how could that be false? Hear, O messenger, that vow which I made —'

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.10.12.61)

यो मे दर्पं विधुनुते यो मे बलमपोहति । यो मे प्रतिबलो भूयात्स एव मम भोगभाक् ॥

yo me darpaṁ vidhunute yo me balamapohati yo me pratibalo bhūyātsa eva mama bhogabhāk

'— whoever shall dispel my pride, whoever shall overcome my strength, whoever shall become my equal in might, he alone shall enjoy me.'

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.10.12.62)

तत एनां प्रतिज्ञां मे सत्यां कृत्वासुरेश्वरः । गृह्णातु पाणिं तरसा तस्याशक्यं किमत्र हि ॥

tata enāṁ pratijñāṁ me satyāṁ kṛtvāsureśvaraḥ gṛhṇātu pāṇiṁ tarasā tasyāśakyaṁ kimatra hi

'— so let the lord of the asuras, having made that vow of mine true, swiftly take my hand — what is impossible for him in this?'

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.10.12.63)

तस्माद् गच्छ महादूत स्वामिनं ब्रूहि चादृतः । प्रतिज्ञां चापि मे सत्यां विधास्यति बलाधिकः ॥

tasmād gaccha mahādūta svāminaṁ brūhi cādṛtaḥ pratijñāṁ cāpi me satyāṁ vidhāsyati balādhikaḥ

'— therefore go, great messenger, and tell your master with due respect: he of superior strength shall fulfill my vow as well.'

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.10.12.64)

एवं वाक्यं महादेव्याः समाकर्ण्य स दानवः । कथयामास शुम्भाय देव्या वृत्तान्तमादितः ॥

evaṁ vākyaṁ mahādevyāḥ samākarṇya sa dānavaḥ kathayāmāsa śumbhāya devyā vṛttāntamāditaḥ

Having thus heard the great Goddess's words, that danava related to Shumbha the entire account of the Goddess from the beginning.

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.10.12.65)

तदाप्रियं दूतवाक्यं शुम्भः श्रुत्वा महाबलः । कोपमाहारयामास महान्तं दनुजाधिपः ॥

tadāpriyaṁ dūtavākyaṁ śumbhaḥ śrutvā mahābalaḥ kopamāhārayāmāsa mahāntaṁ danujādhipaḥ

Then, hearing that displeasing message of the messenger, Shumbha, of great strength, the lord of the danujas, fell into great wrath.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.10.12.66)

ततो धूम्राक्षनामानं दैत्यं दैत्यपतिः प्रभुः । आदिदेश शृणु वचो धूम्राक्ष मम चादृतः ॥

tato dhūmrākṣanāmānaṁ daityaṁ daityapatiḥ prabhuḥ ādideśa śṛṇu vaco dhūmrākṣa mama cādṛtaḥ

Then that lord of the daityas, the master, commanded a daitya named Dhumraksha: 'Listen to my words, Dhumraksha, with due respect —'

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.10.12.67)

तां दुष्टां केशपाशेषु हत्वाप्यानीयतां मम । समीपमविलम्बेन शीघ्रं गच्छस्व मे पुरः ॥

tāṁ duṣṭāṁ keśapāśeṣu hatvāpyānīyatāṁ mama samīpamavilambena śīghraṁ gacchasva me puraḥ

'— having seized that wicked woman by her locks of hair, bring her to me; go swiftly and quickly before me.'

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.10.12.68)

इत्यादेशं समासाद्य दैत्येशो धूम्रलोचनः । षष्ट्यासुराणां सहितः सहस्राणां महाबलः ॥

ityādeśaṁ samāsādya daityeśo dhūmralocanaḥ ṣaṣṭyāsurāṇāṁ sahitaḥ sahasrāṇāṁ mahābalaḥ

Having received this command, that lord of the daityas, Dhumralochana, of great strength, together with sixty thousand asuras —

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.10.12.69)

तुहिनाचलमासाद्य देव्याः सविधमेव सः । उच्चैर्देवीं जगादाशु भज दैत्यपतिं शुभे ॥

tuhinācalamāsādya devyāḥ savidhameva saḥ uccairdevīṁ jagādāśu bhaja daityapatiṁ śubhe

— approaching the Himalaya, right to the presence of the Goddess, spoke loudly to her: 'Devote yourself, O auspicious one, to the lord of the daityas —'

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.10.12.70)

शुम्भं नाम महावीर्यं सर्वभोगानवाप्नुहि । नोचेत्केशान्गृहीत्वा त्वां नेष्ये दैत्यपतिं प्रति ॥

śumbhaṁ nāma mahāvīryaṁ sarvabhogānavāpnuhi nocetkeśāngṛhītvā tvāṁ neṣye daityapatiṁ prati

'— named Shumbha, of great valor; obtain every enjoyment. Otherwise, seizing you by the hair, I shall lead you to the lord of the daityas.'

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.10.12.71)

इत्युक्ता सा ततो देवी दैत्येन त्रिदशारिणा । उवाच दैत्य यद् ब्रूषे तत्सत्यं ते महाबल ॥

ityuktā sā tato devī daityena tridaśāriṇā uvāca daitya yad brūṣe tatsatyaṁ te mahābala

Thus addressed by that daitya, foe of the gods, the Goddess said: 'O daitya, what you say is true, O mighty one —'

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.10.12.72)

राजा शुम्भासुरस्त्वं च किं करिष्यसि तद्वद । इत्युक्तो दैत्यपोऽधावत्तूर्णं शस्त्रसमन्वितः ॥

rājā śumbhāsurastvaṁ ca kiṁ kariṣyasi tadvada ityukto daityapo'dhāvattūrṇaṁ śastrasamanvitaḥ

'— King Shumbhasura is indeed powerful — but what will you do about it, tell me.' Thus addressed, that lord of the daityas rushed forward swiftly, weapon in hand —

Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.10.12.73)

भस्मसात्तं चकाराशु हुङ्कारेण महेश्वरी । ततः सैन्यं वाहनेन देव्या भग्नं महीपते ॥

bhasmasāttaṁ cakārāśu huṅkāreṇa maheśvarī tataḥ sainyaṁ vāhanena devyā bhagnaṁ mahīpate

— but the great sovereign Goddess instantly reduced him to ashes with a mere roar of 'Hum.' Then, O lord of the earth, his army, along with its mounts, was broken by the Goddess —

Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.10.12.74)

दिशो दशाभजच्छीघ्रं हाहाभूतमचेतनम् । तद्वृत्तान्तं समाश्रुत्य स शुम्भो दैत्यराड् विभुः ॥

diśo daśābhajacchīghraṁ hāhābhūtamacetanam tadvṛttāntaṁ samāśrutya sa śumbho daityarāḍ vibhuḥ

— and swiftly fled in the ten directions, plunged into lamentation, insensible. Having heard this account, that mighty king of the daityas, Shumbha —

Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.10.12.75)

चुकोप च महाकोपाद् भ्रुकुटीकुटिलाननः । ततः कोपपरीतात्मा दैत्यराजः प्रतापवान् ॥

cukopa ca mahākopād bhrukuṭīkuṭilānanaḥ tataḥ kopaparītātmā daityarājaḥ pratāpavān

— fell into great fury, his face contorted with a knitted brow. Then, his mind possessed by wrath, that powerful king of the daityas —

Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.10.12.76)

चण्डं मुण्डं रक्तबीजं क्रमतः प्रैषयद्विभुः । ते च गत्वा त्रयो दैत्या विक्रान्ता बहुविक्रमाः ॥

caṇḍaṁ muṇḍaṁ raktabījaṁ kramataḥ praiṣayadvibhuḥ te ca gatvā trayo daityā vikrāntā bahuvikramāḥ

— sent Chanda, Munda, and Raktabija in succession, that mighty lord. And those three daityas, going forth, valiant, of great prowess —

Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.10.12.77)

देवीं ग्रहीतुमारब्धयत्नास्ते ह्यभवन्बलात् । तानापतत एवासौ जगद्धात्री मदोत्कटा ॥

devīṁ grahītumārabdhayatnāste hyabhavanbalāt tānāpatata evāsau jagaddhātrī madotkaṭā

— began their effort to seize the Goddess by force. As they charged upon her, she, the sustainer of the world, intoxicated with fury —

Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.10.12.78)

शूलं गहीत्वा वेगेन पातयामास भूतले । ससैन्यान्निहताञ्छ्रुत्वा दैत्यांस्त्रीन्दानवेश्वरौ ॥

śūlaṁ gahītvā vegena pātayāmāsa bhūtale sasainyānnihatāñchrutvā daityāṁstrīndānaveśvarau

— seized her trident and, with great force, felled them to the ground. Having heard that those three daityas were slain along with their armies, the two lords of the danavas —

Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.10.12.79)

शुम्भश्चैव निशुम्भश्च समाजग्मतुरोजसा । निशुम्भश्चैव शुम्भश्च कृत्वा युद्धं महोत्कटम् ॥

śumbhaścaiva niśumbhaśca samājagmaturojasā niśumbhaścaiva śumbhaśca kṛtvā yuddhaṁ mahotkaṭam

— Shumbha and Nishumbha themselves, came forth with vigor. Then Nishumbha and Shumbha, having waged a most fierce battle —

Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.10.12.80)

देव्याश्च वशगौ जातौ निहतौ च तयासुरौ । इति दैत्यवरं शुम्भं घातयित्वा जगन्मयी ॥

devyāśca vaśagau jātau nihatau ca tayāsurau iti daityavaraṁ śumbhaṁ ghātayitvā jaganmayī

— fell under the Goddess's power, and both asuras were slain by her. Thus, having slain that foremost of daityas, Shumbha, the world-embodying one —

Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.10.12.81)

विबुधैः संस्तुता तद्वत्साक्षाद्वागीश्वरी परा । एवं ते वर्णितो राजन् प्रादुर्भावोऽतिरम्यकः ॥

vibudhaiḥ saṁstutā tadvatsākṣādvāgīśvarī parā evaṁ te varṇito rājan prādurbhāvo'tiramyakaḥ

— was praised then by the wise, she who is directly the supreme Vagishvari. Thus, O king, I have described to you this most delightful manifestation —

Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.10.12.82)

काल्याश्चैव महालक्ष्याः सरस्वत्याः क्रमेण च । परा परेश्वरी देवी जगत्सर्गं करोति च ॥

kālyāścaiva mahālakṣyāḥ sarasvatyāḥ krameṇa ca parā pareśvarī devī jagatsargaṁ karoti ca

— of Kali, and likewise of Mahalakshmi and Sarasvati, in due order. The supreme sovereign Goddess creates the universe —

Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.10.12.83)

पालनं चैव संहारं सैव देवी दधाति हि । तां समाश्रय देवेशीं जगन्मोहनिवारिणीम् ॥

pālanaṁ caiva saṁhāraṁ saiva devī dadhāti hi tāṁ samāśraya deveśīṁ jaganmohanivāriṇīm

— and she indeed sustains and destroys it as well. Take refuge in that sovereign Goddess, the remover of the world's delusion —

Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.10.12.84)

महामायां पूज्यतमां सा कार्यं ते विधास्यति । श्रीनारायण उवाच । इति राजा वचः श्रुत्वा मुनेः परमशोभनम् ॥

mahāmāyāṁ pūjyatamāṁ sā kāryaṁ te vidhāsyati śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca iti rājā vacaḥ śrutvā muneḥ paramaśobhanam

— that most worthy of worship, Mahamaya; she will accomplish your task. Shri Narayana said: Having thus heard the sage's supremely beautiful words, the king —

Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.10.12.85)

देवीं जगाम शरणं सर्वकामफलप्रदाम् । निराहारो यतात्मा च तन्मनाश्च समाहितः ॥

devīṁ jagāma śaraṇaṁ sarvakāmaphalapradām nirāhāro yatātmā ca tanmanāśca samāhitaḥ

— went for refuge to the Goddess, the giver of the fruit of every desire; fasting, his self restrained, his mind composed —

Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.10.12.86)

देवीमूर्तिं मृण्मयीं च पूजयामास भक्तितः । पूजनान्ते बलिं तस्यै निजगात्रासृजं ददत् ॥

devīmūrtiṁ mṛṇmayīṁ ca pūjayāmāsa bhaktitaḥ pūjanānte baliṁ tasyai nijagātrāsṛjaṁ dadat

— he worshipped, with devotion, a clay image of the Goddess; and at the end of the worship, offering his own body's blood as an oblation to her —

Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.10.12.87)

तदा प्रसन्ना देवेशी जगद्योनिः कृपावती । प्रादुर्बभूव पुरतो वरं ब्रूहीति भाषिणी ॥

tadā prasannā deveśī jagadyoniḥ kṛpāvatī prādurbabhūva purato varaṁ brūhīti bhāṣiṇī

— then the sovereign Goddess, the womb of the world, full of compassion, became pleased, and appeared before him, saying, 'Choose a boon.'

Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.10.12.88)

स राजा निजमोहस्य नाशनं ज्ञानमुत्तमम् । राज्यं निष्कण्टकं चैव याचति स्म महेश्वरीम् ॥

sa rājā nijamohasya nāśanaṁ jñānamuttamam rājyaṁ niṣkaṇṭakaṁ caiva yācati sma maheśvarīm

That king asked the great Goddess for the destruction of his own delusion, supreme knowledge, and a kingdom free of thorns.

Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.10.12.89)

देव्युवाच । राजन्निष्कण्टकं राज्यं ज्ञानं वै मोहनाशनम् । भविष्यति मया दत्तमस्मिन्नेव भवे तव ॥

devyuvāca rājanniṣkaṇṭakaṁ rājyaṁ jñānaṁ vai mohanāśanam bhaviṣyati mayā dattamasminneva bhave tava

The Goddess said: 'O king, a kingdom free of thorns, and knowledge that destroys delusion — this shall be granted by me to you in this very life.'

Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.10.12.90)

अन्यच्च शृणु भूपाल जन्मान्तरविचेष्टितम् । भानोर्जन्म समासाद्य सावर्णिर्भविता भवान् ॥

anyacca śṛṇu bhūpāla janmāntaraviceṣṭitam bhānorjanma samāsādya sāvarṇirbhavitā bhavān

'And hear more, O lord of the earth, of what shall unfold in another birth: attaining birth from the sun, you shall become Savarni —'

Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.10.12.91)

तत्र मन्वन्तरस्यापि पतित्वं बहुविक्रमम् । सन्ततिं बहुलां चापि प्राप्स्यते मद्वराद्भवान् ॥

tatra manvantarasyāpi patitvaṁ bahuvikramam santatiṁ bahulāṁ cāpi prāpsyate madvarādbhavān

'— and there you shall attain lordship of a manvantara, of great valor, and abundant progeny too shall you obtain, by my boon.'

Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.10.12.92)

एवं दत्त्वा वरं देवी जगामादर्शनं तदा । सोऽपि देव्याः प्रसादेन जातो मन्वन्तराधिपः ॥

evaṁ dattvā varaṁ devī jagāmādarśanaṁ tadā so'pi devyāḥ prasādena jāto manvantarādhipaḥ

Having thus granted the boon, the Goddess then vanished from sight; and he too, by the Goddess's grace, was born as the lord of a manvantara.

Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.10.12.93)

एवं ते वर्णितं साधो सावर्णेर्जन्म कर्म च । एतत्पठंस्तथा शृण्वन्देव्यनुग्रहमाप्नुयात् ॥

evaṁ te varṇitaṁ sādho sāvarṇerjanma karma ca etatpaṭhaṁstathā śṛṇvandevyanugrahamāpnuyāt

Thus, O gentle one, I have described to you the birth and deeds of Savarni. One who reads or hears this shall obtain the grace of the Goddess.
